Chapter 12

“Scarlet, let’s talk about this later.” My mother said. I looked at her and she almost looked scared. Jack came into the room and he looked stressed out. I knew she didn’t want to talk about this in front of Jack. I just nodded at her and went to my bedroom. Time was running out and I’d be headed off to school soon. Even though I was staying in the city. I somehow felt like things between Lucas and I would change. It left me worried and confused. I was worried that I just told my mother how I really felt about Lucas, but for some reason, I knew she wasn’t going to say anything.

I opened my eyes around two am and I felt overly hot. I slipped out of bed and went downstairs to get some water when I heard voices in the kitchen. “How could you do this Lucas? How could you involve my daughter?” It was my mother and Lucas. I snuck down even closer but kept myself out of view.

“She is not involved. I haven’t told her a thing.” Lucas said.

“Do you love her?” My mom asked.

“Your father is going to lose his mind.” My mother said. “How are you going to protect her Lucas. She knows nothing about this life.”

“I don’t even want to be a part of this life, but I don’t know how to get out of it,” Lucas said.

“Well, you had better think of something soon because now Scarlet is in love with you and this is going to make things worse on you Lucas.” My mother said. I took a deep breath. What the hell is going on? I said to myself.

“I’ll never let anything happen to Scarlet. That’s why I haven’t told her anything, but she knows something is not right and I don’t know how much longer I can hide this from her.” Lucas said. That was it, I stood up and went into the kitchen. They both stopped talking and just looked at me. I crossed my arms at both of them.

“Talk now, Or I’m not speaking to either of you ever again,” I demanded.

“Scarlet baby, just go back to bed.” My mother said.

“You’re fucking crazy if you think I’m leaving,” I never cuss in front of my mother. Her eyes went big.

“Scar!” Lucas snapped.

“No, one of you had better start talking.” I snapped. They both just stood there. Not saying a word. “So, this is how it’s going to be?” I said. I stood up and went over to Lucas. “Until you can trust me. I want nothing to do with you.” I snapped at him then I turned to my mother. “Your my mom and I can’t even believe you right now,” I said and took off to my bedroom. I was so pissed off that I wasn’t thinking straight as I started to pack some things together in a bag. I wasn’t staying in this house any longer. I grabbed my things and started to head to the door when Lucas opened it and came inside. “Get away from me.” I snapped.

“Your acting like a brat.” He said, you have got to be kidding me.

“I mean it Lucas move out of my way. You and mom and Jack can all just rot in this house together with all of your secrets.”

“Don’t you think that if I could tell you I would?” Lucas snapped.

“I don’t care Lucas. I would tell you everything. I would never keep anything from you.”

“This is crazy Scar, where are you going to go it’s two in the morning,” Lucas said.

“You don’t get to worry about me anymore.”

“Is that how you really want this?” He snapped.

“If you’re going to continue to keep me in the dark, then yes!” I snapped back. He stood there for a moment and then took a deep breath and moved to the side.

“I just can’t fucking believe you,” I said and took off. I ran out of the front door and jumped in my car and took off out of the driveway. After I drove for a few minutes I pulled over and tried to regain myself. I pulled out my cell phone and gave Jessica a call.

“Do you know what time it is bitch, this better be good.” She said.

“I need to come over,” I said as the tears started to fall down my face.

“Scarlet are you okay?” She asked me.

“No, I’m not.”

“I’ll leave the front door unlocked for you.” We hung up and I headed over to her house. Once I got there I told her everything that was going on. “Wow, Scarlet this is bad.” She said. “I wonder what the fuck they’re all hiding?”

“I really don’t know, but it must be something big,”

“What are you going to do?” She asked me.

“I just don’t know but I basically ended things with Lucas.”

“Come on girl. You know he loves you. Do you really think he is just going to let you go that easy?” She said. I took a deep breath.

“I just don’t know Jess,” I said as I turned on my side to face her. My heart was broken. I didn’t know what to do. My family has this big secret and no one was talking. “The dorms are open. I think I’m going to just move in early.” I said. She looked at me for a moment.

“Maybe that’s a good idea. Let him think about it for a while.” Jessica said. I just pulled the covers up over my head and closed my eyes. The next morning I got up early and headed down to the college. I wanted to get the keys to my room and start moving in. I got all the paperwork filled out and they gave me the keys. I went to find my room and take a look at it. Because of Jack, I got a private room for myself. I found my room and went inside. There were only a few other students that had moved in so the place was pretty quiet. It was an oversized room with a bedroom, a sitting room, and a bathroom. I had a mini-fridge and a microwave. There was also a full-size bed and two nightstands and a dresser. I closed the door behind me and slid down the back of it. I took a deep breath and felt heartbroken. Before Lucas showed back up, I was so excited about college. I couldn’t wait to be on my own, but now I don’t know how I feel. My mom and Jack were going to help me move in, but I don’t want to see or talk to either of them.

I got a hold of a couple of guy friends from school and asked for there help in moving my things out of the house. Jessica was also coming over to help me. I knew that my parents were going to be gone. They had something to do involving Jack’s job. Lucas, on the other hand, I wasn’t sure where he would be. I could only hope that when we all pulled up he would be gone.

I pulled into the driveway and breathed a sigh of relief when I saw his truck was gone. I let everyone know that we needed to move fast. It wasn’t like I had a ton of stuff. In fact, it would only take one trip to get it all. I walked out of the house with a box in my hand. When Lucas’s truck was pulling in. “Great,” I said. I just continued to walk to the car. Lucas got out of his truck and looked at me. Then Jessica and one of the guys came walking out of the house with stuff in hand. Lucas walked over to me.

“What the hell is going on Scar?” He asked me. I just gave him a look and started to walk over to Jessica. Lucas reached out and grabbed me by the arm. He pulled me back to him. “I asked you a question.”

“Let go of me!” I shouted. Jessica came running over to us.

“Let her go Lucas.” She said.

“This is none of your business Jessica so back off,” Lucas said to her. I slapped his arm off of me.

“Don’t talk to her like that.” I snapped.

“Just tell me what’s going on Scarlet.”

“I’m moving to the dorms,” he actually looked hurt and it hurt my heart.

“Scarlet don’t go.” I took a deep breath and looked at Jessica.

“Give me a moment please,” I said to her. She nodded at me and walked off. “Look, I can’t stay here. I can’t be with someone who can’t be completely honest with me.” I said. “It’s not just you Lucas, it’s the whole family. I don’t know what’s going on, but you can’t even trust me to know. I’m sorry Lucas but I’m moving out.” The tears filled my eyes. He walked closer to me and I just took a step back.

“What if I’m not telling you because I’m trying to protect you.” He said. I just looked into his eyes and they seemed so sincere.

“If it’s that bad Lucas you would protect me no matter if I knew or not,” I said. “If you can’t tell me, then you don’t trust me,” he just stood there and didn’t say anything. I looked down and Jessica came running over to me.

“We have everything Scarlet, are you ready to go?” She said. I looked back at Lucas. He still didn’t say a word. I took a deep breath and just got into the car and we all drove off.
