Chapter 13

My mother has been calling and calling me, but I keep ignoring her calls. I’m sure Lucas let them all know what I was doing. I’ve been moved into the dorms now for two days. I have to say I love it. I thought maybe since I left without saying a word that maybe Jack would cut me off of my money, but so far I still have it. I was fully prepared to get a job. I was still thinking about getting a job, but I knew I needed his money to help me through school.

Classes start in just a week. Lucas texted me my first night here and I didn’t respond. I haven’t heard from him since. I finally got all my things put away and I realized I had forgotten a box. I decided to go ahead and head back home to grab the box. Praying no one would be home, I pulled into our driveway. Lucas's truck was there along with two other black trucks. Great Lucas probably has friends over. I didn’t want to see him with other girls. I took a deep breath debating on whether I should just come back at a different time or not. I pulled in and that’s when I saw three huge men beating the shit out of Lucas. I went into action and pulled my gun out of my glove compartment. I got out of the car and shot it in the air. I had my cell phone is my hand ready to call the cops.

Jack taught me a long time ago how to use a gun. I always kept one in my car in case of an emergency. Everyone stopped and turned to look at me. Lucas was on the ground holding on to his stomach. He looked over at me. “I suggest you fucking leave before I call the cops,” I said to the three men. They looked at me for a moment and then the bigger one turned to look at Lucas.

“This isn’t over yet.” He said.

“This is very over, get the fuck out of here now!” I shouted. They moved to their trucks and started them. The big guy drove over to me.

“You should have minded your own business little girl.” He said.

“Lucas is my business,” I said back to him.

“Good to know.” He said and took off. I watched them leave the driveway and then I ran over to Lucas. He was still on the ground and there was blood all over him.

“Oh my god. I need to call you an ambulance.” I said as I start to dial 911.

“No Scar, no cops. Just help me inside the house.” Lucas said. I looked at him like he was nuts, but I just set my phone down and helped him up. It wasn’t easy. I’m so little and he is so big. I helped him to the couch and ran off to get the first aid kit. I came back out to him and started to clean his face up.

“Who... Nevermind you’re not going to tell me anyway.” I said. Lucas just looked at me. He took a deep breath.

“I miss you,” he said and it pulled at my heart.

“I miss you too,” I couldn’t help myself as I moved closer to his and kissed his lips. He made a noise and I knew I hurt him, but he wouldn’t let me pull away.

“You were right to go, baby. I’m sorry things are the way they are, but.” He took a deep breath. “But you’re going to learn everything soon.” I heard the front door open and my gun was sitting on the coffee table. I grabbed it and pointed it at the opening of the living room. My mother, Jack, and my sister came walking in.

“Scarlet, what the hell are you doing?” My mother hollered. I put the gun down right away and that’s when they all saw Lucas on the couch.

“What the hell happened?” Jack said as he went over to Lucas. My mother took my sister and walked out of the room.

“I forgot something so I came back to pick it up and three guys were beating the shit out of him,” I said. Jack looked over at me.

“What did you do Scarlet?” Jack asked me. I told Jack what I had done and he just shook his head at me. He went back to Lucas and tended to him. “Help me get him to bed Scarlet,” Jack said and I did as I was told. We laid Lucas in his bed.

“Dad we can’t let her go.” I heard Lucas say to Jack.

“What? Can’t let who go?” I asked them both. Jack took a deep breath.

“I know son.” He said to Lucas.

“Hello? I’m in the room.” I snapped.

“Scarlet honey, please come have a seat,” Jack said. I knew I was about to find everything out. What I didn’t know was just how bad it was and how I just made it worse.

“There are some very bad people after Lucas. He made some bad choices and owes them a lot of money.” Jack said.

“So why don’t you just pay them off. I know you have the money.” I said to Jack.

“It’s not that simple Scarlet. Trust me I have tried that.” He said. I didn’t understand. “These people won’t allow me to pay for him. They want the money from Lucas, not his daddy, as they put it.”

“This is crazy, how do you owe them money?” I asked Lucas.

“That’s not important Scarlet, what’s important now is that they have seen you,” Jack said.

“Me? What would they even want with me?” I asked.

“You told them I was important to you,” Lucas spoke up. Jack just looked at us.

“What do you mean?” Jack asked.

“Well, I... They told me to mind my own business and I told them Lucas was my business.”

“Fuck!” Jack yelled out. “Why would you do that?” He said to me.

“Dad calm down, she didn’t know what she was doing,” Lucas said.

“Her life is now in trouble Lucas, don’t you see that?” Jack hollered.

“Then I guess she needs to know the truth,” Lucas said.

“What truth? What?” I said. Lucas sat himself up and reached out for me.

“You might as well tell her everything. I’m in love with her dad and she loves me back.” Lucas said. My heart stopped the minute his words left his mouth. All I could do was look at Jack. His face went into shock.

“Is that true?” Jack asked me. I looked at Lucas and back at Jack. All I could do was a nod at him. I couldn’t find the words. “How long has this been going on?” He asked us.

“Just a couple of weeks,” I said.

“But I have loved her longer dad,” Lucas said. Jack shot him a look.

“How could you Lucas? With my wife’s daughter. A girl I look at as a daughter?” Jack said. “You know the dangers that she is now in.” He shouted.

“I know dad. I know.” Lucas said. I just kept looking at them.

“Come on you two. What’s going on?” I asked.

“You know what Lucas, you love her so much. Then you tell her how her life is in danger now. I wash my hands of this.” Jack said and took off out the room. Lucas took a deep breath.

“My father makes his money off of drugs and guns.” Lucas started to say.
