Chapter 14

“I’m sorry what did you just say?” I asked Lucas. He just looked at me.

“My father runs a very successful company, but he also works with some very shady people. By day he runs a large shipping company, but at night he sells drugs and guns to very bad people. He oversees some of the largest gun tradings in the country.” Lucas said.

“I don’t think I understand Lucas. Are you trying to tell me that Jack is a criminal? Is he involved with the mafia or something?” I asked.

“Look, Scarlet, there’s a lot to the story, but long story short. I’m supposed to take all this over someday. I don’t want to be involved, but I already am. I know too much and these people know this. My father is not in the mafia or a gang, but he works with people who are. These people would love to take over my father’s business, but my father has good friends in high places. He is basically untouchable, but I’m not. My father has been doing everything in his power to protect me, but unless I agree to take over. I’m not protected.” Lucas said. All of this was crazy. What the hell was even going on?

“Does my mother know all of this?”

“Yes Scar, she has for a very long time,” I can’t believe my mother would drag us into something dangerous like this. I said to myself. “Don’t be mad at her. She loves Jack and love makes you do crazy things sometimes.” Lucas said like he could read my mind.

“So now what? These people will be after me now?” Lucas took a deep breath.

“I don’t know, but it's possible.” You have to move back home,” Lucas said.

“What? No.”

“You have too, Jack’s men need to protect you.”

“Jack’s men?”

“Yes, this house is always under watch,” Lucas said.

“But I have never seen anyone.”

“That’s because all of this was always hidden from you girls. Jack never wanted you two to know anything.”

“I don’t know what to make of all of this. So what you're telling me is that you’re in danger?” I said. He nodded at me.

“As long as I don’t want to be a part of my dad’s business.” He said.

“Then you have to.”

“Have to what?” Lucas asked me.

“Join your father’s business, Lucas,” He looked at me funny.

“Are you nuts Scar, I can’t be doing that type of business and be with you.”

“Why not?”

“Because it’s dangerous. I would never drag you into that.” He said.

“Well, it looks like I’m already in danger Lucas. What’s the damn difference? Besides if what your saying is true. Once you’re in it then your protected, right?” He nodded at me. I was so angry at Jack that I couldn’t see straight. This was all his fault. If he didn’t drag Lucas into this mess none of us would be here. Now I’ve got to be in love with a criminal. A criminal that doesn’t want to be a criminal. This is all too much and my mother knew all along what was going on. I can’t believe she dragged my sister and me into this. My mind was going a million miles. The only thing I knew for sure was Lucas had to do this.

“Will you stay with me?” Lucas asked me. I crawled into the bed next to him and laid down on his chest.

“Of course I will,” I said to him. I felt his fingers go through my hair.

“I’m so sorry Scarlet. I never wanted to keep secrets from you. I was doing what I felt I needed to do to keep you safe.”

“I know that now. I’m sorry I was hateful about it. I didn’t know.” I said.

“That doesn’t matter now. What matters is keeping us safe. I do need you home for a while. Just until I can make sure your okay.” Lucas said. I wasn’t going to argue. I now knew what was going on and there was no way I was going to make this any more difficult than it already was. I helped Lucas get all cleaned and fixed up and left him in his bed to rest. I walked out of his room and into the kitchen where I found my mother and Jack. I walked in and crossed my arms fully ready to give them both a piece of my mind. They turned and looked at me.

“How is he?” Jack asked. It was hard for me to be mad at Jack. He has been like a father to me for so long and we have never been upset with each other. He has always been there for me and giving me everything I have ever wanted. I took a deep breath.

“He is resting and he looks to be okay. No thanks to you.” I said. He just looked down.

“I’m sorry Scarlet if you're disappointed in me.” My mother wrapped her arms around him.

“How could you drag him into this?” I asked him.

“He is my son Scarlet. He is the only person to take over all of this when I step down or die.” Jack said. “I had to take it over when my father passed away.”

“Are you kidding me? This has been going on that long?” I asked.

“Your mother acted the same way when she found out,” Jack said. I looked over at my mother, who at this point still hadn’t said a word. I would deal with her later. “It’s the family business Scarlet. It has been for generations. It’s not going to change and if I try to change it or step down and leave it. Our family could be killed.” He said. I took a deep breath.

“Lucas is going to join,” I said. Jack looked at me.

“What did you say?” He asked me.

“I said, he is going to work with you. No more issues.” I said. Jack took a deep breath.

“How did you pull that off?” Jack asked me.

“Does it matter?”

“I guess not, but I hope you understand what this means?” He said

“I do and I want in,” both Jack and my mother’s face dropped.

“No fucking way Scarlet,” Jack said.

“Why not? I can be very useful. I can be trained and I can help. Besides if the man I love has to go out there every day and put his life on the line. I want to be with him. I can’t sit around all the time worrying about him. I’ll go insane. Put me to use.” I couldn’t believe the words that just came out of my mouth. Jack looked up to my mother who shook her head no at him. “I’m not a child anymore. I can make up my own mind. This is what I want.” Jack looked back at me.

“Lucas will never allow this Scarlet,” Jack said. My mother then walked out of the room. “Don’t worry about her I’ll take care of her.”

“Then you let me worry about Lucas,” I said.

“Okay, if this is what you really want. I’ll start your training as soon as possible. You need to learn how to defend yourself. I would say Lucas should train you, but I don’t think he is going to be cooperative.” Jack said. “I need to make some phone calls Scarlet. I suggest you talk to Lucas about all of this.” Jack said and got up and left the room. I took a seat on the couch and tried to process everything that just happened. I couldn’t believe this was going to be my life. I have never been in a fight in my whole life. I had no idea what I was going to be doing. I had no idea what a life like this was going to be. Was I strong enough to do this? I suddenly felt very tired. I laid down on the couch and fell asleep.

“The fuck she is!” I heard yelling when I opened my eyes. I was still on the couch and I sat up. Lucas came walking out to the living room. “There is no way in hell I’m letting you do this,” Lucas snapped at me. Jack walked into the room and leaned against the wall with his arms crossed. He looked even more stressed out.

“Lucas, we will talk about this later,” I said trying to wipe the sleep out of my eyes.

“There’s nothing to fucking talk about. You’re not going to be involved!” He snapped. I got pissed off and stood up in his face.

“You don’t get to choose this!” I snapped back at him.

“Your fucking out of your mind if you think I’m going to allow you anywhere near these people.” Lucas snapped. I just shook my head. “Baby please.”

“What’s it going to be Scarlet? I’ve got training set up for you this morning.” Jack said. Lucas snapped his head at his father.

“I’ll never forgive you if you let her do this?” Lucas said to Jack. Jack didn’t say a word.

“I’ll be ready in five minutes,” I said and started to walk out of the room. Lucas grabbed my arm.

“Please Scar, don’t do this.”

“I’m sorry Lucas, but if you’re involved then so am I,” I said and headed off to the shower.
