Chapter 19

I woke up early still in Darren’s bed. The whole night was wonderful, but I wanted to get on the road and I didn’t want to wake him. I wrote him a note and quietly left his room. I got to my room and started to pack my things up. I forgot that I had turned my phone off and I turned it on and set it down. I was putting things in my suitcase when I heard my phone go off a bunch of times. I walked over to it and I had at least fifteen missed calls and texts from my mother. What the hell? I said to myself. I hit the call button and called her back.

“Scarlet? Where have you been? I’ve been trying to call you all night?” She said to me and she sounded so upset.

“Relax mom. I told you I had the event last night. I left my phone turned off in my room.”

“Scarlet, Jack had a heart attack last night and died.” My mother said. I almost dropped the phone.

“What did you just say?” I asked her.

“I need you to come home.” I looked at the clock and it was only nine am.

“I’ll be there soon,” I said. I hung up with my mother and threw the rest of my things in my bag and headed back home. After my two hour drive, I got a hold of the hospital to get the time off and got myself a flight back home. I couldn’t get there until tomorrow morning. I let my mother know all the details and then I sat back and waited. My first thought was Lucas. He must be a complete mess. I said to myself. I was tempted to call him, but I went against that. I was probably the last person he would even want to talk to. This was going to be so awkward. No matter what I needed to be there for my mother and even though Jack wasn’t my real father. My heart hurt because he was so good to me. Then a thought occurred to me. Lucas is now in charge. Oh god, I wondered how he is handling all of this.

The next morning I was at the airport bright and early. My plane ride was long and bumpy. I got off the plane and my mother and sister were waiting for me. I went into my mother’s arms. “You look so good, baby.” My mother said to me. “Your hair is longer and you have lost some weight. Your beautiful.” She said. I just smiled at her and she looked like such a mess.

“I’m so sorry mama,” her eyes started to tear up and we made our way out to the car. My sister drove here and she drove us back home. On the way, I had to ask them how Lucas was doing.

“He is not good, He has pushed that girl he was seeing, Sabrina away and I haven’t seen him since last night.” My mother said. I took a deep breath. We got back to the house and it was almost evening time. Lucas was still nowhere to be seen and I had a really good idea of where he might be. It took me over an hour to get the courage up to go out and find him. I took the keys to my mother’s car and went out to his spot. I pulled in and I found his truck, but he was not alone. there were three other cars parked here. I parked my mother’s car and got out I started to walk and I came upon Lucas and three other guys I didn’t know and two girls. They were all drinking and being very loud. He didn’t look upset at all. He actually looked, board. He didn’t have a drink in his hand but he did have a girl in his lap.

I walked up to all of them and crossed my arms. I walked over and stood in front of Lucas who’s mouth fell open.“Since you look just fine. I’ll leave you to it.” I said and started to walk back to my mother’s car. I could hear someone behind me. I felt a hand on my shoulder. I turned around fast and moved his hand away.

“What the hell are you doing here Scar?” Lucas asked me.

“Where the hell else would I be Lucas? I came out here because I thought you needed me, but I guess this place ain’t so special to you anymore.” I snapped. He looked at me for a moment and then I saw a flash of the old Lucas. The Lucas I used to hate.

“Get the fuck out of here Scarlet.” He snapped at me and turned around to walk away.

“You don’t have to tell me twice!” I yelled out at him. I turned to get in the car and he grabbed my arm and turned me around. His face was close to mine. “Let me go.” I hissed out. He was breathing deeply. “I hate you,” I said and the tears fell down my face. He let me go immediately and took a step back. I got in the car and took off without looking back. I drove straight back to my mother. I found her on the couch. “I’m here for you and to help you with getting together Jack’s funeral, but after that, I’m gone,” I said and took off to my bedroom. I went inside and locked the door behind me. I pulled my phone out and sent Jessica a text letting her know what was going on and that I would be here for a couple of days. I laid in the bed and just looked out my window. I heard a light tap at the bedroom door. I got up and opened it. My mother stood there.

“Your sister and I are going out for dinner do you want to come?” She asked me.

“No thank you, I’m not hungry and I really just want to go to bed,” I told her. They left and I just laid back down. Then I heard the sound of tires screeching outside. I stood up and saw Lucas get out of his truck and come in the house. I turned my bedroom light off and tried to stay quiet. I then heard banging on my bedroom door. I just took a deep breath. I got up and went to the door and opened it. He stood there all pissed off looking. “What Lucas? What do you want?”

“I want to talk to you.” He said. I crossed my arms. “I’m sorry I snapped at you back there. I’m sorry you have hated me all these years. I’m sorry you walked in on something that wasn’t what it looked like.”

“Are you done?” I asked him. He nodded at me. “Goodnight Lucas,” I said.

“Do I really mean so little to you?” He said before I shut the bedroom door. I stopped and turned to face him.

“You don’t mean anything to me anymore,” I said. “Even if what I saw was wrong so long ago. Then where were you?” I asked him. “How come if it wasn’t for me showing up out there tonight. I still wouldn’t have heard a word from you?”

“That goes both ways Scar.” He said to me.

“Yeah, does it? Because if I remember correctly you were not the one who walked in and seen a man all over me, kissing me, did you?” I said to him. “If I had meant a fucking thing to you, you would have found me, but not even once did you try and find me. Not once.” I said. “It’s been five fucking years Lucas,” I said to him. He stood there and looked at the ground. I just shook my head. “Go back to your friends. I thought with what’s going on that you might have needed someone. I came to you tonight to be there for you, but you were just fine weren’t you?”

“I need you.” He said. I just looked at him and he broke down right in front of me. “I have no one anymore.” He said in tears and my heart broke. I wrapped my arms around him and we went to the floor. I just held him while he cried in my arms. After a few minutes, I got him downstairs to the kitchen. He took a seat and I made us both a cup of tea. We weren’t saying anything. We just sat quietly and drank our tea.

“How have you been?” I asked him. He looked up at me.

“I’ve been alright.” He said. “How about you?”

“I’m good, I’m a nurse now,” I said.

“Yeah, I know.” I smiled at him. “Do you like it?” He asked.

“Very much,” I said. “It keeps me very busy working at the hospital ER. I’m trying to get into an actual office.” I said. “I heard you had a girlfriend?” I asked him.

“I was seeing a girl for a while but I didn’t care about her as she cared about me.”

“I’m sorry to hear that Lucas I really am."

“What about you? Anyone special in your life?” He asked me. My first thought went to Darren. I wasn’t sure what he was at this moment.

“No, I don’t have anyone special in my life,” I said. He gave me a small smile.

“I know you don’t want to hear this but if you let me I’d like to say something to you.” He said to me. I looked at him.

“Go ahead."

“You promise to let me talk?” He asked me. I nodded at him. He took a deep breath.

“That night when you came in and saw me with that girl, what you saw was wrong. She came on to me, but I guess I wasn’t doing much to prevent it from happening. She is a good employee of my father’s and had worked with him for years. Or shall I say was, She was fired that night. Anyways, I had been with her in the past. I mean I slept with her, but I hadn’t been with anyone since I was with you. She was coming on strong that night and you had just happened to walk in at the wrong moment, but Scar, I have never cheated on you and I would have never had cheated on you. I love you more then you will ever understand.” I listened to his words and realized he said he loves me, not loved me.
