Chapter 21

I got up early the next morning and wanted to head back home. I had a lot of boxes of things I wanted to keep so I decided to rent a car and just make the drive back home. I also wanted to go see Jessica before I left. I had said my goodbyes to my mom and sister last night. I hadn’t seen Lucas and I felt a clean break was best. I finally got the car all packed and I took a seat in the driver’s seat. I looked at the house and said goodbye to Jack. I then looked at Lucas’s bedroom window. I was having a lot of mixed feelings. I wanted to run inside and tell him how much he meant to me. I also wanted to run home and go back to my normal life. I just took a deep breath and started the car and left.

I pulled up to Jessica’s place and she came running out to me. She didn’t have to be into work until late. We decided to go out and have breakfast together. “So how was it seeing Lucas again after all these years?” She asked me. I just looked out the window. “Scarlet?” She said again.

“It was confusing."

“Confusing? Why?” She asked. “Wait, because you still have feelings for him?” I just nodded at her. “So, what’s the problem?” I took a deep breath.

“Jess, my life is in Carolina. His life is here.” I said. She just smiled at me.

“You know you have been this way since the moment I met you. Scarlet, you’re a nurse and you can work anywhere. If you love him then be with him.”

“It’s not that simple. I left him for a reason. I don’t want to live a life where I’m worried about someone all the time.”

“Worried about what? He explained the situation to you. He wasn’t doing anything with that slut.” She said. It’s hard to explain something to someone when they don’t know the whole story and Jessica has no idea about the illegal things Lucas does. She doesn’t know that now he runs the whole thing and there is no way for him to get out of that alive. He would have to hide for the rest of his life if he backed out. I don’t know if I want that kind of life. I also have small feelings for another man that also lives a life of crime. I needed to clean both of them from my life. “I’m sorry Scarlet, I just don’t know what you want to hear?"

“I don’t know either Jess, I guess I’ll just go home and see what the future brings me. I love my home, but I also know that my mom is here and so is my sister.” I said.

“It looks like you just need some time to weight out what it is you want to do. You know you don’t even have to be with Lucas to be here back home.”

“I know that, but he makes it hard,” I said.

“That’s because you love him still.” I just gave her a look. I hated it when she was right. It drove me crazy. We talked a while longer and then we said our goodbyes and I headed back to North Carolina.

I’ve been back home for a little over a week now and it has been back to business as usual. I didn’t realize just how boring my life really was until I came back. I sat on my back porch one night just watching the ocean and I felt restless. I needed a change or at least something else going on in my life. I heard my doorbell go off. I sat there for a second. Who the hell would be here at this hour? I said to myself. I got up and went to the door. Damn it for not having a peek hole. I slowly opened the door and was surprised to see who was behind it. “Darren? What the hell are you doing here?” I asked him. He stood there with a smile on his face.

“I wanted to see you.” I just smiled at him.

“How did you find out where I lived?” I asked him. He kind of just cocked his head and looked at me. “Oh right,” I said. I stood back so he could come in.

“I like your place."

“Yeah, it’s small but it cozy,” I took a seat on my couch and looked at Darren. “I don’t mean to sound like a bitch or anything, but what are you doing here?”

“Well, since your the only woman I have ever been with that just up and used me like a cheap piece of meat. I kind of can’t stop thinking about you.” He said. I just shook my head and smiled.

“I wasn’t trying to use you. Okay maybe a little, but I wasn’t doing it intentionally.” I said. “I’m just not trying to be tied down to anyone right now."

“I can respect that, but I’d still like to see you. I mean you have to like me a little right?”

“Of course I like you, but your lifestyle is what keeps me away,” I said. He looked at me funny.

“Wait a minute, you grew up in this lifestyle. I don’t understand.” He said.

“That’s not true."

“But when I first met you...” I stopped him.

“When you first met me I was only aware of everything for a short time. Things may have been going on around me, but I had only found out everything for maybe a year at that point. I really didn’t grow up that way. I don’t like it and I don’t want to be a part of it.” I said. Darren looked confused.

“I’m sorry Scarlet. I didn’t know.”

“It’s not your fault Darren."

“Would you like me to go?” He asked me. I smiled at him.

“No, you have already come all this way,” he smiled at me.

“I just wanted to see you and spend a little time with you. I hope you don’t mind?” I smiled back at him.

“No, I don’t mind."

“Good because I’m here. So what do you do for fun?" He asked me.

“I work."

“That’s not fun Scarlet.”

“I don’t have a lot of time for fun right now."

“Do you work tomorrow?” He asked me.

“No, it’s my only day off."

“Good, then I’m going to show you just what fun is.” He said and I laughed.

“Okay, Darren you show me fun."

“For now, I’m going to show you sleep, because you look very tired.” He took the remote from me and found a dumb movie. Then he set next to me and pulled me into his arms and before I know it, I was asleep.

I woke up the next morning still in Darren’s arms. He was fast asleep next to me and I tried to move without waking him. I ran off to the bathroom and then into the kitchen to make coffee. I opened up my house like I do whenever I’m home. I also started to make pancakes and I saw Darren start to move around. “Wow, it smells amazing in here.” I heard him say.

“Are you hungry?” I asked him. He turned to see me and he had a huge smile on his face.

“Yes.” He said. I walked over to him and gave him a cup of coffee. He smiled and took the cup.

“This is something a man could get used to,” He said. I just shook my head and went back to making pancakes. I set breakfast up out on the patio table on my back porch. It was such a beautiful day out. I made pancakes, toast, and sausage. Darren ate every bit, it made me smile to feed him. I giggled a little to myself. “What’s so funny?” He asked me.

“Nothing, It’s just funny to see a big gangster-like yourself act so sweet and carefree,” he just eyed me for a moment.

“I’m not a gangster Scarlet. I’m mafia and there is a big difference.” I just shrugged my shoulders at him. I could care less.

“It’s still true, I don’t see a mean bone in your body,” I said to him.

“You don’t know me just yet Scarlet, but I don’t really want you to know that part of me.” He said and he looked very serious. I just shook it away and smiled at him.

“So what do you want to do today Mr. Mafia man?” I said with a smile.

“You're going to pay for that.” He said and I bit my lip and smiled. “Can I take a shower first?” He asked me.

“Yes, of course, you can. I’d like to as well.”

“You can join me if you want?” He said and winked at me.

“I think if I join you we might not leave the house at all today."

“To be honest with you Scarlet, I’m okay with that.” He said and smiled

“Stop trying to charm me and go take your shower,” I said and took a sip of my coffee. About thirty minutes later. Darren came out in casual clothing and he looked so hot. I just stood there and looked at him.

“Like what you see?”

“Actually, I do sir. You look amazing.” I said.

“Thank you.” He said. “Now move your ass before I spank it.” Oh, I said to myself.

“I think I’ll take the spanking,” I said. I could see his smile grow and he started to walk over to me. “Oh but I’m not going to make it easy for you,” I said and I took off. He took off after me. I felt him grab me from behind and I fell to the bed just laughing my ass off.

“Your just a little vixen aren’t you.” He said as he tickled me.

“Darren! stop it, please.” I said with tears in my eyes as I couldn’t stop laughing. He flipped me over smacked my ass a good one and told me to get in the shower. I laughed and ran off to the bathroom.
