Chapter 25

The night before our trip to North Carolina. I sat on my bed with my cell phone in my hand. It has been a little over a week since I found out about my baby. I still haven’t heard anything from Darren. I needed to make this phone call. I wasn’t going to tell him about the baby over the phone, but I wanted to make sure he would see me. I took a deep breath and found his number and hit call.

“Scarlet?” I heard him say.

“Yes, how are you?” I asked him.

“I’m doing good. How are you? Is everything okay?”

“Yes, everything is good. Darren, I was wondering if I could see you tomorrow evening?”

“Are you in town?” He asked me.

“I will be in the morning."

“Then I would love to see you.”

“How about dinner at your restaurant in your hotel?” I asked.

“Sure thing around eight sound good?”

“Yes, that’s perfect. See you then.” We said our goodbyes and I was sweating.

“How did it go?” Lucas came walking in and asked me.

“It was okay. I’ll have dinner with him tomorrow night.” Lucas smiled at me and sat next to me and wrap his arm around me.

“Are you sure you don’t want me to go?” He asked.

“No, this is something I need to do on my own,” even though I was scared. I still felt Darren and I needed time to talk alone about our baby. All our bags were packed and our flight was at seven am. My mother and I had a good long talk about what I wanted to tell Darren. She made me feel so much better about things. I crawled under the covers with Lucas who was already sleeping. The poor guy he works his ass off and has to deal with me. I kissed him and went to sleep.

I was busy trying to put on some makeup and Lucas had been watching me this whole time. I could tell he had a lot on his mind. I knew he was worried. “Are you okay?” I asked him. He smiled at me.

“Yeah, I’m good. I’m just going to stay up here in our room. I’ll have my phone on me. You call me if you need me.” He said.

“I’ll be okay baby, but if I need you I’ll call you,” I said. I grabbed my purse and walked over to Lucas. He pulled me close to him and gave me a kiss.

“I love you Scar.”

“I love you too,” I said and headed down to the restaurant. Darren was standing out front and he was talking with three very large men. I stood off to the side and waited for him to be finished. It looked important and I didn’t want to disturb him. That was until I caught his eye. He smiled big at me and said something to the men and headed my way. I smiled back at him. Darren is a very good looking man. It’s hard not to be attracted to him.

“Hello beautiful, wow you look amazing. Did you change something? You're just simply glowing.” He said. I just giggled at him.

“Darren your always so sweet,” we went inside and took a seat. We both ordered and then Darren looked at me.

“So what do I owe the pleasure of your visit tonight?” He asked me. I took a deep breath it was now or never.

“Darren, I’m pregnant,” he just sort of looked at me for a moment.

“That’s great Scarlet, but why come all this way to tell me that?” He asked me. He doesn’t understand.

“Darren, it’s your baby,” I said and bit my lip.

“What do you mean, it's my baby?"

“I’m eight weeks along. The night here in the hotel. You were the only man I had been with in five years. I’m having your baby.” I said. He just sat there and looked at me. “Darren?” He still didn’t say a word. I bit down on my lip. He started to blink some.

“Are you and Lucas back together?” He asked me. I nodded my head at him. “Does he know?” I nodded my head again. “He is okay with this?”

“Yes, he loves me,” I said.

“Do you even care about me?” He asked. I wasn’t sure what to say. I mean I do care about Darren, but I don’t really know him all that well. I’m also very much in love with Lucas.

“Darren, I do care about you, but we didn’t get any time. I love Lucas and he has promised to help me and stand by my side. You have a right to know about your baby and that’s why I’m here. I want you to be a part of this, but I understand if this might be too much for you. I’m going to have this baby with or without you, but it has a right to know its father and you have the right to know your child. The choice is completely up to you. I will never keep this baby from you as long as your there. I don’t know you very well Darren, but from what I do know, I think you would be a wonderful father.”

“Why didn’t I meet you first?” Darren said.

“What do you mean?”

“I mean that I could have fallen head over heels for you, and now you're carrying my child. You're an amazing woman. I want to be there for you and the baby. I want my family to know this child. So whatever you need until the baby is born. I will be there, my child will want for nothing.” He said. I smiled at him.

"I want you to understand that I have put a lot of thought into this. Lucas wants to help me and be there for me. I don’t want you two to ever fight over this, but you are the father so what you say goes. Even though I’m with Lucas, your opinion matters. Please understand that I will never override what you say because of Lucas. I mean I might override you if I don’t agree.” I said and smiled. Darren smiled and laughed.

“Sounds like you have this all planned out.”

“Darren, how do you feel about all of this. You seem very calm?” I asked him.

“I don’t really know just yet, but as of right now I’m okay. I wish things were different.” I reached out and placed my hand on his.

“I’m sorry, I didn’t plan on my life going this way. I thought that I was completely over Lucas and I was just fooling myself. He has been a wonderful man about all of this and I’m grateful for that.” I said to him. He smiled at me. We finished our dinner and said very little. We did, however, talk about him coming to see me throughout the pregnancy. He wanted to be there for me as much as possible. I told him he was welcome as much as he wanted. He kissed me on the cheek and told me he would be in touch. We said our goodbyes and I headed back to Lucas. When I got to the room Lucas wasn’t there. I just sat on the bed and pulled out my phone and texted him. I got no reply and headed to the shower. Maybe he just needed to get out of the room for a while. Once I was done in the shower. I came out and Lucas still wasn’t back in the room. I wondered if I should go out and try to find him, but I knew I should just probably go to bed. I crawled into the bed and fell right asleep.

Lucas’s POV,

“Darren,” I said as I found him down in the hotel lobby. He turned and looked at me. Scarlet had texted me and told me she was back in our room. I just put my phone back in my pocket. I walked over to him and he met me in the middle.

“Lucas, how are you?” He asked me. I just looked at him for a moment.

“How did things go with you and Scarlet?” I asked him. I was doing my best not to sound like a jealous dick. I just thought it would be smart for us to talk as well.

“It went okay. She is an amazing woman and I hope you know just how lucky you are.”

“I do know and I want you to know that she is a very selfless person and she will do her best to make you a good father. She will also run herself tired making sure I know she loves me. I need you to understand that and never hurt her in this process. This is not going to be easy on any of us, but she is the last one I want unhappy.”

“I won’t do anything to make her feel that way. I will do my best to make sure she wants for nothing. Look, Lucas, I know you love her and I care a lot about her. She is easy to fall for. I tried to be a part of her heart and I just wasn’t there in time.” Darren said. I took a step back.

“Wait a minute, do you love her?” I asked him. He looked uncomfortable and just looked to the ground. “Darren, she belongs to me."

“I know this Lucas. You don’t have to tell me that, but here is your warning. The baby is mine and I will be in its life and if you fuck up in any way I will be in her life as well.” He said and turned to walk off. I closed my eyes. Don’t shoot him, don’t shoot him. I said over and over to myself.
