Chapter 4

We pulled up to the house and it looked as though no one was home. Lucas helped to carry our things inside and sure enough, we were alone. He sat our stuff down on the kitchen counter. “Thanks for inviting me today.” He said. I looked over at him.

“Your welcome Lucas. Did you have a nice time?” I asked him. He nodded at me. “Did you meet any nice girls?” I asked. He looked over at me.

“No, not really.” He said.

“Really, I saw you talking to a lot of them,” I said. He just smiled.

“Why were you watching me?” He said.

“I wasn’t watching you. I just saw you talking to a lot of girls.” I said.

“I saw you Scar.” He said.

“Saw me what?” I asked. I stood there in the kitchen with my arms crossed. What was he getting at? I asked myself. “If you want to get technical you were watching me,” I said.

“I know I was.” He said.

“What? Why?” I said.

“Because I had to make sure you were okay.” He said. I watched him for a moment.

“Okay.” Was all I said. I went to grab my beach bag and head off to take a shower. He stopped in front of me.

“Who is Nick?” He asked me.

“Nick? You mean the guy from the beach?” I asked. He nodded at me.

“He is just a guy I know from school. Why?” I asked him.

“Is he your boyfriend?” He asked me.

“Not that that’s any of your business, but no he is not. My boyfriend Andy has already left for college. He is across the country now.” I said. The look on his face was a hard one to read.

“You have a boyfriend?” He said.

“Yes, we have been dating for two years,” I said. He just looked at me and I walked around him.

“Scar?” He said. I stopped and looked at him. “Are you sleeping with him?” He asked me. I just looked at him like he was crazy.

“What? That’s none of your business Lucas.” I said and headed up to my room. After I got out of the shower I head back down to the kitchen because I was hungry. I noticed the back door was open and I heard some music playing. I peeked my head out the door and I saw Lucas sitting with like four other guys and he had some chick sitting on his lap. I crossed my arms and stood there for a moment. One of the guys saw me and I recognized him as one of Lucas’s old friends. I think his name was Gage or something.

“Scarlet, come out here and join us!” I heard him holler. I looked at him for a moment and stepped outside. Lucas turned and looked at me. Then he went right back to talking to the girl in his lap. “Wow, Scarlet you sure have grown up.” He said. I just smiled at him. “Come have a beer with us.” He said.

“She doesn’t drink,” Lucas said. I just gave him a dirty look.

“Sure I’ll have one,” I said and took a seat. Lucas gave me a look.

“Damn Lucas, why didn’t you tell me your sister was so hot?” Gage said. Lucas shot him a look.

“She is not my sister.” He said. That kind of hurt.

“So Scarlet do you remember me?“ He asked me. “I’m Lucas’s best friend Gage.” He said. I didn’t remember his name but I played it off well.

“Of course, I wouldn’t forget a good looking face like yours,” I said. I then noticed Lucas was looking right at us. For a while, Lucas was doing his best to ignore us while Gage and I just sat there and flirted with each other. Then I heard the girl in Lucas’s lap ask him to take her upstairs. I made a yuck type of face as he stood up with her and they left the back yard. I didn’t really understand why it bothered me. I tried to shrug it off and just continued to give Gage my full attention. After about three beers and an hour later the guys were wanting to go into the pool. They were jumping in and I was sitting in the chair laughing at them. Gage swam to the side of the pool and smiled at me. He was actually a very cute guy. He had dirty blond hair and blue eyes. He was muscular, but not as big as Lucas.

“Come on Scarlet, join us.” He said.

“I just got out of the shower,” I said. He put his lip out to me as I downed more beer. “Okay, fine,” I said. I stood up and the beer hit me. I felt a little drunk and ran to jump in the pool. As I came up I felt arms around me and I was in Gage’s arms. He was smiling and I was laughing.

“Your really beautiful you know that?” Gage said in my ear.

“You think so?” I asked him.

“Very much so.” He said. I smiled at him. “We should hang out this summer, you know just you and I, ” He asked me.

“I think we can do that,” I said to him. We swim around for a while and I got out to grab a towel. I looked towards the house and the same girl that was with Lucas was leaving. She wasn’t with Lucas and she looked a little mad. Gage came up to me and started to rub my towel on my body. “What are you doing?” I asked him with a smile.

“Just trying to warm you up.” He said. I felt a little light-headed and needed to sit down. I moved away from Gage to have a seat, but he pulled me into his arms and I felt his lips go to mine. Before I could even react. He was pulled away from me and tossed back into the pool. I stood there trying to balance myself. “What the fuck man?” I heard Gage yell from the pool. Lucas looked at me.

“Are you okay?” He asked me. I nodded at him.

“Party is over!” Lucas yelled out. Then he turned to me. “Go inside.” He said.

“I’m not a child Lucas. I don’t have to go inside.” I said with my arms kind of crossed.

“Scarlet, take your drunk ass in the house.” He said. I looked at him for a moment and just turned and headed inside. I made it as far as the couch and sat down. A few minutes later Lucas came walking inside. He slammed the back door. Then he turned and saw me.

“You know, you took some girl upstairs and fucked her. Then you have the nerve to come back down here and act all brotherly like and ruin my moment.” I said slurring some. He took a seat next to me.

“Your drunk, and don’t you have a boyfriend?” He said.

“Yeah, but we have an understanding,” I said.

“Yeah, and what’s that?” He asked me.

“He can do what he wants and so can I. Were not married you know,” I said closing my tired eyes. “Besides ain’t Gage your best friend? Don’t you trust him?” I said. I didn’t hear Lucas say anything and my eyes were too tired to open. “Besides it was just a kiss,” I said.

“If you want to kiss someone, let it be me.” I heard him say. Then I felt his lips on mine as I fell asleep. I opened my eyes in the morning and found myself in my bed. I sat up and felt like something wasn’t right. Did that happen last night or was I dreaming? I kept asking myself. I kind of smile. That had to be a dream. No way Lucas is just going to say something like that and then actually do it, but it felt real. Lucas was like family even though we both say were not brother and sister all the time. It’s still weird to think about him that way. I never felt anything other than hate for him. I’ve only just started to maybe see him as a friend. He had actually been acting like a normal human. I got up and jumped into the shower and headed downstairs. If he didn’t bring it up then I wasn’t going to. I walked by the living room and Lucas was sitting on the couch.

“Morning,” I said as I walked by.

“Morning.” He said.

“Scarlet, mom, and dad are going to be gone for the next week and your sister is staying at someone’s house. They called this morning.” Lucas yelled.

“Okay,” I said from the kitchen. “Does this mean you're going to have guys over here all the time,” I yelled back to him. He came walking into the kitchen.

“No.” Was all he said. I turned to face him while I poured some orange juice.

“Why not? Afraid I’ll hook up with them?” I said out of nowhere. I don’t even know where that came from. He looked at me for a moment.

“What are you getting at Scar?” He asked me. Hell, I didn’t even know.

“Never mind Lucas,” I said. I started to remove myself from the kitchen. He stood in front of me.

“Come on Scar, what are you trying to say?” He said. “Do you remember last night?” He asked me. I took a deep breath.

“So you did kiss me. I wasn’t dreaming that. Why Lucas? Why would you kiss me?” I asked him. Then he became speechless. “Come on you started this.” I snapped at him.

“That was a mistake.” He said.

“Really, both times?” I asked.

“Yes.” He said. He licked his lips.

“Then tell me why you did it twice?” I asked him. He took a deep breath.

“Were done here.” He said. Then started to walk away. Oh hell no I said to myself. I’m going to get to the bottom of this now. I ran in front of him and placed my hand on his chest to stop him.

“You, start talking now,” I said in a stern voice.

“I have nothing to say Scar. It was nothing but a stupid mistake. One that we should both forget about.” He snapped. “Now move out of my way.” He said. I stepped aside. I watched him walk off and I felt a little hurt by his words. I just rolled my eyes and carried on with my day. I didn’t see Lucas for the rest of the day. I knew he was home because his truck never left. I decided to order some Chinese food and just kick back alone with a movie. I found a good scary movie and set my food up and prepared myself for a good night of scares. About halfway into the movie, Lucas came walking into the living room. I just looked at him as I shoved a bite full of food in my mouth. Waiting to be hollered at again. He just took a seat on the other couch. He didn’t say anything so I just left him alone. “I’m sorry.” I heard him say out of nowhere.

“Sorry for what? Being a dick or kissing me?” I said. He looked over at me.

“All of it.” He said.

“Why don’t you just not be a dick and then you can stop all of these apologies,” I said. He smiled at me.

“Do you forgive me?” He asked me.

“No, no I don’t,” I said and looked back to the TV.

“Why? Is it because you want me to want to kiss you?” He asked me. I turned my head back to him.

“What?” I said.

“I’ve been upstairs thinking all day long. About how wrong it was for me to kiss you, but I liked it.” He said. I just watched him.
