Chapter 8

Once my parents got home. I only saw Lucas twice that day. Once when he came out of his room to say hello to our parents and then I saw him leave with his dad. It was already late in the evening and I was helping my mother in the kitchen. She has always loved to cook. “How did things go around here while we were gone?” She asked me.

“They went good,” I said.

“So you haven’t had any problems with Lucas?” She asked me.

“No, not at all. He has actually been fun to be around.” I said.

“Really, Lucas fun? Well, that’s good at least.” She said. I kind of had this feeling like she was hiding something from me, but I didn’t question it. I didn’t want to take any chance that I could give anything about Lucas and me away. We both heard the front door open and then it was slammed. We both jumped. Lucas came in first. He stopped looked at us and then headed to his room. Then his father came in. He looked pissed off and stressed out. My mother went over to his side. I watched them walk off. I sat there contemplating on going in after Lucas to check on him. Fuck it, I said to myself. I got up and headed towards Lucas’s room. I grabbed the doorknob and tried to open it, but it was closed. I looked around and no one was in sight. I lightly tapped on his door. A few seconds later Lucas opened his door.

“What do you want, Scar?” He asked me.

“I wanted to check on you,” I said softly. He reached out and pulled me into his room and locked the door behind me.

“Did anyone see you come here?” He asked me. I shook my head no at him. His lips came to mine and it wasn’t an easy kiss. It was very intense and fast. I tried to move away from him, but he held onto me.

“Lucas, slow down. Tell me what’s wrong.” I said to him. He stopped and looked at me. Then he closed his eyes.

“I’m sorry Scar. My father. He just. He.” Then he got quiet. He went and took a seat on his bed. I followed him and set down next to him.

“Talk to me, Lucas. You can tell me anything.” I said softly. He reached over and ran his hand down my cheek.

“If only I could tell you everything Scarlet, but I just can’t.” He said.

“What does that mean Lucas?” I asked him.

“It means I can’t.” He simply said.

“Why are you keeping secrets from me? I mean look at what we are doing. Don’t you think you can trust me?” I said and I was starting to sound upset.

“It has nothing to do with that or us Scar. It’s things you don’t need to know.” He said.

“Are you in trouble Lucas?” I asked him. He looked over at me.

“What makes you think that?” He asked.

“Well, I think that you should be able to tell me anything by now Lucas,” I said. He took a deep breath.

“There are things about my father and me that you don’t need to know about. Can you just please, leave it at that.” He said. I crossed my arms and just looked at him.

“I’ll leave it alone for now Lucas, but I don’t like seeing you upset and I don’t like being in the dark about your life. One day you have to get over it and tell me what’s going on.” I said. He just smiled at me.

“Okay, I’ll take it.” He said. “Now get your sweet ass out of my room.” He said. I laughed and pushed him a good one before I walked out. I went up to my room and I just couldn’t let what Lucas said go. I needed to know what the hell was going on between him and his father. Knowing who I was I would get to the bottom of it. Lucas wasn’t going to give me any info anytime soon. I guess I just might have to figure this one out on my own. I knew just the perfect person to help me. Jessica loved to play the detective work and she was always so good at it.

The next morning I had made plans to go see Jessica and try to get to the bottom of what the hell was going on. I felt like my mother knew what was up, but I’d never get any answers from her. Besides I didn’t want to make her think anything about Lucas and myself. I kissed my mother goodbye as I headed over to Jessicas.

“So what makes you think we will find anything interesting?” Jessica asked.

“I don’t know Jess, I just think something is not right and I’m going to find out what it is, with or without your help. It will go faster with your help though.” I said smiling at her. She just smiled back at me and shook her head.

“Okay, so where do we even start? I mean do you think it’s something personal or something to do with your stepfather’s company?” She asked me. I never thought about that.

“Hell, I don’t know Jess, maybe it’s both?” I said.

“Have you ever looked into his company before?” She asked me.

“Not really. I don’t even think I know what it is he actually does. I’ve gone to a couple of dinner things over the years, but that’s really all.” I said.

“Well, you’re a big help.” She said. “Wouldn’t it be cool if they were like mafia or some big gang thing,” Jessica said.

“Nope, not at all,” I said. She just sort of giggled.

“That would make Lucas even hotter,” Jessica said. I just rolled my eyes at her.

“That would just make me worry more,” I said.

“Are you worried now?” She asked me.

“Yes, only because he comes back with his father and they both seem so angry all the time. Plus I don’t think Lucas wants to join his father’s company, but he never wants to talk about it.” I said.

“Well, something definitely is going on.” She said.

“I know that’s why I’m here, hello?” I said. I gave Jessica all the info I had on Jack’s company. I told her as much as I could about Lucas. Jessica decided to see what she could find on the internet. I had to get home for some dinner my mom wanted us to all be home for, and I wanted to see Lucas. Jessica told me she would let me know if she finds anything interesting. I said goodbye and headed home. Once I pulled into the driveway. I could hear yelling coming from the house. I rushed inside to see what was going on. My mother was in the kitchen and Jack and Lucas were face to face. My poor mother was trying to break them up. “What the hell is going on?” I yelled out. Lucas turned to see me standing there. He didn’t say anything else. He grabbed his keys and took off.

“That’s right, take off like you always do!” Jack yelled at him. I heard the door slam.

“What the hell?"

“I’m sorry Scarlet. You shouldn’t have had to see that.” Jack said.

“Just tell me what’s going on?” I said again. I looked at my mother who looked like she had seen a ghost. Then I looked back at Jack.

“You knew your brother.”

“Lucas is not my brother Jack and what do you mean I know him? Why are you two so mad at each other?” Jack took a deep breath.

“He just doesn’t listen. His life is going to go down the drains if he doesn’t start listening to me.” He said and walked off. My mother went after him. Yeah. something is not right. I said to myself. I turned around and took off out the front door. I needed to find Lucas. His truck, of course, was already gone, but I knew where to find him. I turned onto the dirt road that leads out to all the fireflies. I found his truck and knew he was here. I got out of the car and walked over to his truck. He was still sitting inside. I came over to his window and put my face down on the door.

“Long day?” I said softly. He didn’t even look at me. “Come on Lucas,” He still didn’t look at me. “So then don’t talk. Why don’t we go out and sit and just watch the bugs.” He finally looked over at me.

“Why are you here Scar? What do you even see in me?" He asked me. I opened his car door and put my arms around him.

“Lucas, why wouldn’t I be here?”

“I don’t know why you are.” He said. “I’m the last person on this earth you should be messing around with.”

“And why is that?” I asked him.

“Because I’m no good.” I just shook my head at him.

“So because your father keeps telling you that you are no good. That makes it true?” I said to him. “You are not no good Lucas. You are not worthless. Do you know how I know your not?” He just looked at me. I could see his eyes were red and wet. “I would never fall in love with someone who is worthless.”
