Adrian’s panicked words made me jump out of bed. “Adrian, is she okay?” My question came out louder than I anticipated, and Tyler woke up.
“Just get here,” Adrian said, before the end call beep reiterated on the receiver.
He hung up the call. Tyler flung the blanket before he stood off the bed. “What’s wrong?”
“Adrian called me up. Ellie is at the hospital. I don’t know any more than that.”
“Okay, baby. We’ll go together.”
After getting changed as quickly as we could, Tyler and I made our way to the hospital. He drove a little faster than he should have. “Tyler, slow down.”
“Sorry. I didn’t realize.”
“I’m so scared. Adrian didn’t say much.” I peeled the skin around my finger. “I hope everything is okay with the baby.”
Tyler reached out and took my hand in his which stopped me from gnawing at the flesh. “We’ll be there soon. I’m sure the hospital will take good care of her and their baby.”
“Ellie and Adrian have always wanted kids,” I confessed. “I remember when we were young, we would play house with our dolls, and she would always want to be the mom. Nothing has changed.”
A single tear rolled down my cheek and Tyler glanced at me briefly before he redirected his attention to the road. “Let’s not get ahead of ourselves, baby.”
I took a deep breath and nodded. Ten minutes later we arrived and thankfully found a spot in the parking garage before we made our way into the hospital. After calling Adrian, he buzzed us to the emergency area.
He stood and pulled me in for a hug. “Thank you for coming.”
“What happened? Why is she here?” I asked.
Adrian moved away and wiped his tired eyes. “We were in bed asleep. She woke up and was in pain,” he explained. “She went to the bathroom and noticed some blood, so I took her straight here.”
“Oh, Adrian. Is she okay? Is the baby okay?”
“They’ve taken her in for a checkup,” he said. “Won’t know until they do an ultrasound.” Adrian sighed. “I’m sorry for calling you. I didn’t want to be alone and I know she would want you to be here. You’re like a sister to her.”
“You and Ellie are my family, too.”
We sat down with Adrian and waited for the doctor to arrive. “Hello, Adrian.”
“Dr. Is Ellie, okay? Our baby?”
“We’ve checked her over and we’re about to do an ultrasound. Would you like to come in?”
“Yes, can her sister come in, too?” Adrian asked.
“If it’s okay with Ellie,” The doctor replied.”
“She’ll be fine with it,” he said. “Tyler, you’re family too.”
We all made our way to the ultrasound room. As soon as Ellie saw Tyler and me, her eyes and face lit up. “I’m glad you guys are here. We’re both so scared.”
I held her hand and gave it a gentle squeeze. “I’m always here for you.”
“Okay, are we ready?” The doctor asked.
“Yes,” Ellie replied. Her eyes were puffy from crying, but she still managed to look so beautiful.
The doctor sat down next to her, lifted her top and squeezed a generous amount of gel on her stomach before he moved the wand over the same area. “Okay, so what we want to see and hear is a nice strong heartbeat.”
The doctor watched the screen and we all listened closely desperate to hear that glimmer of hope. Adrian held her right hand while I held on to her lift. Tyler stood beside me. About twenty seconds into the ultrasound, the small thumps became louder and clearer. Ellie and Adrian breathe out a sigh of relief.
“Baby’s heartbeat is nice and strong,” the doctor confirmed. “I believe you may have had a threatened miscarriage, but since we’ve heard the strong heartbeat, there’s a less chance that will happen,” he explained. “You may bleed for a few days. I would recommend you use your GP again for another scan to check that everything is still okay.”
“So, our baby is okay?” Ellie asked.
“Yes. Your baby is fine,” he smiled. “We’ll keep you here overnight for observations, but everything seems to be normal.”
“Thank you so much doctor,” Adrian beamed before he leaned down and kissed Ellie on her forehead.
“I’m so glad everything’s okay, Ellie.”
“I love you, Summer,” she wept, though I could tell her tears were a mixture of emotions brought on by stress and happiness.
“Tyler and I will let you guys get some rest. Call me if you need anything.”
I gave Ellie and Adrian a hug before Tyler and I walked out of the room then made our way to the car. He opened the passenger door, but before I stepped in, Tyler pulled me in for a hug. He must have sensed that I needed the comfort. “They’re both okay, baby.”
“They would have been so scared.”
Tyler pulled back and cupped my face in his soft hands. “I love you, Summer. I love how much you care for the people in your life.”
“I love you, too.”
“Can I ask you something?”
My head rested against Tyler’s chest. We’d just settled back in bed after arriving from the hospital. I looked up at him and smiled. “Sure.”
“You mentioned that Ellie and Adrian have always wanted kids.” Tyler paused for a moment. “Have you?”
“Well, when I was a kid not so much. As I got older, I started to want them,” I admitted. “With the right person of course. What about you?”
“I didn’t even think I wanted a girlfriend, let alone kids,” he chuckled. “But lately...it’s been on my mind.”
I rested my head back on his chest and paid attention to the lulling of his heartbeat. “How do you feel about it now?”
“I can see myself having a future with you. Having kids.” Tyler held my chin and tilted my head to catch his gaze. “It just hit me tonight that it can be scary as fuck thinking you might lose something so precious.”
“It can be scary, Ty, but once that baby is born, it will be worth all the fear, worry and the love.”
“I know, baby,” he whispered. “I was talking about you, too.”
A confused expression painted on my face. “What do you mean?”
“Just the idea of losing you, scares me,” he declared. “Things are so perfect between us; I don’t want anything to ruin it.”
I bit my lip and climbed on top of him, so my legs fell on either side of his body. His hands grasped my waist and I leaned down to kiss him.
“You have me. You have all of me.”
“Good, because I can’t imagine my life without you in it.”
“I love you so much, Tyler.”
“I love you too.”
A week later, Tyler and I were in bed. My eyes could barely open from my throbbing head, and I’d sneeze one after the other every few minutes.
“Baby, are you okay?”
I shook my head and croaked. “N...n...no.”
“Are you sick?”
“Awww. I’m sorry, baby.” Tyler pulled me closer to his body. “It’s my turn to take care of you, now.”
“No. I don’t want you seeing me like this.”
“Baby, I had my mouth last night on your pussy and I kissed you all over your face,” he added. “I’m sure it’s already in my system.”
I couldn’t help but giggle, but that only made the pain in my head worse.
“I’m going to get you some water and medication.”
He flung the blanket off and left me alone in the room to grab what I needed. When he returned, the mattress sank when he sat down beside me. “Sit up, baby. Take this and you can go back to sleep.”
With his help, I sat up and took the tablet and sculled some water before I laid back down again. “Thank you.”
“I love you so much, Summer,” he whispered. “And one day, I’m going to make you my wife.”
