Chapter 4

“Everyone,” Finlay continued. “This is Tyler.”

Tyler waved, smiled, and scanned the room before locking eyes with mine, and I immediately noticed the small gap between his lips before they curved upwards.

“Tyler, why don’t you introduce yourself?”

Holding my gaze for just a few moments before he broke the connection. “Hey, everyone. I’m Tyler. The new accounting manager. I’ve just moved here and really looking forward to working with you all.”

His focus shifted back at me right at the end of his introduction. My head dipped low, and I glanced towards my fidgeting hands.

Not good. Not good. Not good.

When I finally looked up, Tyler’s eyes were still on my own.

Oh, God. The way he’s looking at me. Those lips. No matter how much I wanted Tyler, I couldn’t give in because he was my boss.

I just didn’t think I had it in me to keep resisting him.

“Summer,” Finlay called out, dragging me from my thoughts. Both he and Tyler were now next to me. Everyone else had left the meeting room.

“Can you show Tyler around please?”

Not good. Not good.

“Yes, of course I can.”

Finlay introduced me as one of the best employees who knew everything about the office. I should have been flattered, but all I could think about was the way Tyler gazed at me, and how his muscles flexed beneath his navy-blue shirt, and I didn’t even have to leave anything to the imagination, because I already knew what was hidden underneath the cotton material.

Finlay left, and I was nervously alone with Tyler.

“So, you’re my boss now.”

“This doesn’t have to be some awkward thing.”

“Why would it be awkward?” I said, “I mean you’ve only seen me naked once, I’ve seen you naked---well twice. I think we’re way past awkward.”

Damn that delicious smile.

“Well, the first time I wasn’t really naked, so that doesn’t count,” he joked. “How long have you worked here?”

“Almost nine years,” I replied. “I’m a sucker for commitment.”

Tyler shrugged his shoulders dismissively. “Well, we both know that’s not my type of thing.”

“Oh, I know this. If you were, I doubt I would have found you naked, alone and cuffed to your bed.”

“You think people who are in committed relationships don’t do kinky shit?” Tyler’s brows drew closer.

“Believe me. I know they do,” I replied as I recalled the naughty and mouth-watering things I’d done in past relationships.

“So, what’s the difference?”

“The difference is you wouldn’t have been left alone for another girl to find,” I winked. “Are you ready for your tour?”

“Don’t you mean, are you ready for your tour, SIR?”

What the fuck?

I huffed. “Sir? Really?”

There was something with the way that word released from his kissable lips. Sir. Tyler liked control and I felt it when he pressed me against the bed---and I’m not gonna lie and say I didn’t like it, coz I sure as fuck did.

“Well, I am your boss,” he smirked.

“Okay then. Are you ready for your tour, sir?”

A flirtatious smile played on his lips. “Lead the way.”

For the next half an hour I showed Tyler around the opened plan area. Only a few select people had private, and I was grateful to be one of them. The second place I led him to was the large break room which was fitted with a full kitchen, a twenty-seater table and modern appliances which got abused every day.

“This is where you’ll be making my coffee, huh?”

Oh, you are cocky, sir.

“If you’re lucky, I’ll bring you back a coffee when I go out. S far as making one goes, I’m sure you can work out how to do that all on your own.”

“Is this how you talked to your other boss?”

I wasn’t sure it was a good idea to speak to him that way, and even though I knew Tyler was my direct manager, I couldn’t bring myself to actually believe it.

“Nope,” I replied. “He wasn’t as lucky as you.”

Tyler nodded. “Okay. Fine. Show me.”

“Show you what?”

“You want me to make my own coffee, show me how to use the machine.”

I shrugged my shoulders. “Okay then. Easy.”

The both of us walked over to the newly purchased coffee machine, which I had a hand in begging Finlay for.

“How do you like your coffee, sir?”

I flirted the last word a little.

Tyler cleared his throat and responded. “Black.”

“Simple enough.”

Reaching over to the cabinet just above Tyler’s head, I inched closer towards him. “Excuse me please.”

He stepped back and allowed me access, so I pulled out one of the flower-patterned mugs before I closed the door.

“You place the cup under the spout, and depending on how strong you want it, you press either one of the buttons here.”

Tyler placed his finger on the metallic button at the same time as me. “You mean this one?”

As soon as our skin grazed, electricity surged through my entire body, lighting corners which haven’t been touched in years.

My breath hitched, and I quickly moved my hand away, tugging at my black pencil skirt. “Yeah, that’s the one.”

Tyler tried, again and again, but nothing happened. After failing a few times, he turned to me and growled, his fingers still frantically trying to get the machine to work. “Are you sure this is right?”

“Woah,” I said, grabbing his hand. “Slow down before you break the thing.”

Tyler didn’t let go, instead, he ran his fingers over my palm, eliciting the same electricity I felt only moments before.

“Tyler, what are you doing?”

He dipped his voice low. “Your skin is so soft.”

Oh, God. Please don’t do this to me. Not here. Not at my work. I don’t want to get fired for wanting to fuck my boss!

“How’s the tour?” Finlay interjected.

Tyler let go and we both frantically created some distance between us, hoping Finlay didn’t just witness whatever went on between us.

And there was something that went on between us.

“Good,” Tyler croaked. “Summer’s just showing me how to use the coffee machine.”

Oh, God. Please don’t do this to me. Not here. Not now. Not ever.

Finlay voiced his desire for some hot caffeine and decided to head to the café on the first floor of the building. My attention turned back to the stubborn machine and I realized why it didn’t work.

“You’ve got to be kidding me,” I muttered, glancing at Tyler with a laugh. With one flick of the switch, the machine lit up

“I think you should just stick to store bought coffee,” Tyler grinned, but I urged him to try again. He pressed the silver button one last time in an effort to release the liquid gold, and we both chuckled as soon as the coffee poured from the sprout.

“I guess turning it on makes a difference,” Tyler’s smile widened until he managed to bring the cup to his lips for his first sip. “Oh, that tastes like shit.”

“There’s a good coffee place downstairs,” I suggested.

“Take me there later?” Tyler said, tipping the coffee down the drain, and I couldn’t blame him. The machine may have been new, but the brand of coffee was horrid, and had a bitter aftertaste.

I was about to respond when Cassidy interjected. “I’ll take you!”

My muscles clenched at the sound of her slutty voice, and when I finally caught sight of her, the smile on her face begged me to slap it right off. She stared at Tyler the same way I had

Cassidy’s short skirt sat right underneath her ass and her blonde hair flowed effortlessly down to her shoulders. She may have been a whore, but she was gorgeous, flirtatious, and promiscuous. Definitely the type of girl Tyler would be into.

No strings attached sex.

“Sure,” Tyler replied before he shifted his attention to me. “Summer, can we take a rain check on showing me the office? I’m in need of a decent coffee.”

“Not a problem,” I lied. “Come find me in my office when you’re done.”

It had been three hours. Three agonizing hours since Tyler left with Cassidy, the tramp.

Where the fuck did she take him?

I had no idea what was wrong with me. It’s not like I was with Tyler to care who he went with, but I didn’t think the problem was that he went with someone else---the problem was that he went with her.

Tyler and I wanted two different things, and I knew Cassidy was perfect for him as they wanted the same thing. Sex without attachment.

But what the hell was that in the break room? Why the fuck did he touch me like that and why the hell did I like it so much?

God, Ellie is right. I need to get laid.

Drowning myself in paperwork was all I could to serve as a distraction for the thoughts in my head which didn’t deserve to be there.

As I placed my keys in my back, I glanced towards my office door and noticed Tyler leaning against it with his arms folded.

His once neat hair was now unkept, and I noticed his shirt slightly out of his pants.

Oh, he definitely had sex

“Is it too late for the rest of that tour?”

“Yeah, I’m just about to head home.” I closed the zipper on my bag and hung it on my shoulders.

“Tomorrow, then?”

“I’m working from home tomorrow.”

And there was that look which told me he didn’t like the sound of it---not that I cared. I had been working from home a couple of days per week for at least 5 years, with no objections from Finlay or my previous manager.

“Aren’t you supposed to ask your boss if that’s okay?”

“I already did.”

Tyler stepped into my office, striding towards my desk as though he were on a secret mission. “I don’t recall you asking me.”

I slid the strap of my bag down and hung it over my chair. “I don’t have to ask you.”

“Aren’t I your boss?”

“Technically, yes.”

“So, technically you should ask me.”

There was a slight playful tone in his voice, and I couldn’t figure out if he was serious or not, but from his slight smirk, I got to thinking he wanted to play.

And I was completely up for playing with Tyler.

“Fine,” I sighed. “Can I work from tomorrow, sir?” I hoped he could sense the sarcasm in my tone.

“Is this going to be a regular thing?”

I explained to Tyler that this had been something I agreed on previously, and both the manager he took over and Finlay were on board with it.

Tyler leaned over and placed his hands flat on my desk, talking in a low and very sexy voice. “And what happens if I need you?”

“Then you can call me.”

He shrugged his shoulders. “But I don’t have your number.”

Tyler loved being in control, that much was clear, but I wasn’t sure if that extended inside the bedroom as well.

God, I hope it did.

“Hand it over,” I smiled.

“Give me your phone please,” I said. “No. Wait. I’m sorry. Give me your phone please, sir.”

There was a slight curve of his lip at the last word. He reached around his back pocket and handed me his cell. Tyler’s fingers lightly touched mine as the phone exchanged hands. I swallowed hard, averted his gaze and added my mobile number in.

“There. Now you can call me anytime.”

“Yes,” I replied.

“What if it’s 3 in the morning and I can’t sleep?”

“Then call Cassidy,” I muttered beneath my breath, though somehow his ears pricked up and he heard me.

“Are you jealous?”

“Of what?”

“Me and Cassidy.”

Damnit. He probably did have sex with her.

“Oh, the office slut had sex? How shocking,” I mocked.

“You’re the relationship type of girl, that’s fine, but don’t judge someone for not wanting the same thing you do.”

Tyler’s voice was firmed, annoyed, and I knew what I said must have triggered something, but he obviously got the wrong message.

“What in the world are you talking about, Tyler?”

“You’re judging Cassidy for probably being promiscuous and judging me. I don’t appreciate that, Summer.”

“I’m not judging either one of you for being adventurous!” I yelled, grateful that the other employees in the office had already gone home.

“Then what’s the problem if I fuck her?”

“Me not liking Cassidy has got nothing to do with you.”

“So, you wouldn’t care if I fucked her?”

Why the hell Tyler thought it would have been appropriate to ask me that question---I didn’t know.

“God no,” I whispered beneath my breath. “I care that she fucked my boyfriend.”

I shook my head, dismissing my own confession. “Forget it. I’m not having this conversation with you.”

Snatching my bag from my chair, I huffed and stormed towards the exit. Tyler may have been my manager, but I wasn’t going to let him get under my skin, no matter how damn sexy he was.

I stood against the kitchen bench, turning the pepper mill over my sautéed mushrooms. My phone chimed over the sizzling pan, and I wiped my hands before I checked the message.

Hi, Summer. It’s Liam here. I was hoping we could go out for that coffee tomorrow night?

I sent a quick reply, making sure not to burn my food for the second time this week. Hey, Liam. Tomorrow night sounds great.

You’ve made my day. There’s a coffee shop close to where Ellie lives. It’s called Bean Here Before. Can we meet at 5?

I know the one. I’ll see you there tomorrow.

I smiled thinking about my coffee date with Liam. He was sweet, and didn’t seem to be afraid to want to get to know me.

I woke up from the obnoxious sound of my alarm ringing in my ear. The sun was barely up, and I didn’t think I should be either.

Ugh. Too early.

Letting out a moan, I rolled over and slammed my hand on the tiny clock. After forcing myself out of bed, I got changed in my workout gear and decided to go for a run. From the moment I stepped outside, the cold chill in the air whispered against my skin. Stretching my body, I tucked the earphones in my ear and put on energy boosting music I needed to exercise.

After jogging for a few minutes, I noticed someone running beside me, so tugged on the wires to stop my music.

“What are you doing here, Tyler?”

“I’m running. What does it look like?”

“Are you following me?”

“Hard to do that when I’m running beside you.”

Picking up the pace, I wasn’t surprised when Tyler kept up with me---the entire way, right up until we landed at the park, and jogged a few times around the track. After we slowed down to walking, we both collapsed and fell onto the grass area.

“What possesses you to go for a run so early?” Tyler asked, almost struggling to breathe.

I laughed and forced myself to a seated position to stretch out my calves.

“It clears my head and releases endorphins.”

“There are other ways to do that, you know?” he winked.

“Yeah, like how?”

“Are you serious?” Tyler’s brows raised.

I shook my head. “Sex is not an option for me,” I panted, still trying to catch my breath from the run.

“It’s always an option. You’ve had one-night stands before, why not now?”

This was not a conversation I wanted to be having with him.

“I shouldn’t be talking to you about sex.”

“Why not?”

I tucked my leg beneath my body and stretched out my other calve. “Because you’re my boss for one thing.”

“I’m not your boss right this minute.”

“Did you wake up this early just to go on a run with me?”

“No, I had trouble sleeping.” Tyler lifted his arms above his head, raising his sport shirt which exposed his skin. “That happens most nights.”

Tyler explained he woke up at 2:30, and that was a regular occurrence for him. He suffered from insomnia and that had been an issue he dealt with since he was a kid, but never really got help for it.

“So, what got you up early today?”

“I was thinking about things.” Tyler’s face blushed only slightly. I cleared my throat feeling very curious about what went on inside of his mind.

“What kind of things?”

“You know---things.”

My lips curved up. “Are you blushing, Tyler?”

He became defensive. “No.”

“Oh, yeah. Now we’re getting somewhere. What were you thinking of Tyler?”

“It’s sir to you.”

“Oh, so now you’re my boss again?”

“I’m always your boss.”

“And you’re avoiding the question.”

Tyler picked at the green grass and pulled a few strands from the soil. “You won’t like my answer.”

Not knowing what he meant, I continued to beg Tyler for more details, until he confessed. “Cassidy.”

He was right. I didn’t want to know.

“You were up at 2:30am thinking about Cassidy?”

“Yes,” he replied, and I searched his eyes for the truth, or any hint of a lie, but couldn’t tell either way.

“I get it. I mean I’ve been up at that time in the morning thinking about her, but my reasons were different from yours.”

“Why do you hate her so much?”

“I’m sure you’ll hear about it soon from the office gossips,” I said, shutting down the conversation.

“You changed your mind about going in?” Tyler asked.

“No, I’m working from home today.”

Tyler rested his arms on his knees, holding his own hands. “I’m still not happy about it. I need you in the office.”

“I’m sure there are other people who can help you---besides, you have my number. You can call me when you need to.”

“I don’t want anyone else, Summer.”

God, those words could have a whole different meaning if I let them.

“Finlay said you were the best,” he continued.

“That’s because I am.”

I cleared my throat and stood before I reached out my hand to help Tyler. Instead of getting up too, he tugged my arm and pulled me on top of him, causing our lips to almost collide.

“Damnit, Tyler. What are you doing?”

We were so close, his heavy breaths tickled my gaped mouth.

Oh, God. I can’t do this.

Starting anything with him would be a mistake. Tyler didn’t want me, and I knew I would end up hurt. I went to pull away, but he held onto my waist, stopping any attempt I made.

He took control and rolled over so my back was against the wet grass. His eyes focused on my lips before locking with mine again, then leaning in as though he were going to kiss me.

I wanted him to kiss me. Bad. I just knew it couldn’t happen. Tyler knew I wasn’t into casual flings.

Damn, even after sweating he still smells good.

His fingers circled against my bare waist, causing me to swallow my inhibitions, but when he leaned in closer, I found my confidence again.

“Stop,” I whispered.

Tyler smiled, stood, and reached out to help me to my feet. “Sorry.”

“Thank you,” I replied.

“For what?”

“Stopping when I asked you to.”

“Call me old fashioned but kissing someone against their will is not my kinda thing.”

“Good to know.” I dusted the grass from behind. “I usually grab a coffee before I head back. Want to grab one with me?”

Tyler shook his head. “I have to get to work.”

“Okay,” I nodded. “Well, call me if you need any help.”

“Anytime?” he smiled.

I couldn’t help but smile back. “Yes, sir. Anytime.”
