The words Marry Me were sprawled out using bacon strips on the tray which I’d pulled out of the oven. “Oh, God!” My hands flung over my mouth and I turned to Tyler, who kneeled in front of me while he held a small blue box.
“Summer. Ever since the moment I saw you at Ellie’s, I knew there was something special about you. I never thought I would be able to find someone I would ever settle down with. My heart was closed off until you came in my life, and it didn’t take me long to fall in love with you.” The tears in his eyes mirrored the ones in my own. “Your courage and strength are something I will continue to admire about you. You have the best sense of humour mixed in with the right amount of cheekiness. Your caring nature, your love for those close to you and your sexy ass is only the tip of why I fell in love with you. I’ve had the best moments of my life being with you.” He cleared his throat, glanced at the blue box which he opened before his kind eyes found mine. “I know I can’t be without you or imagine my life without you in it. I knew it the first night we broke up, when I couldn’t sleep without you next to me. From the first moment we kissed, I knew I was in trouble, and I didn’t realize, but by then I was already falling in love. I love you more than a person could love anyone else. Summer, will you do me the greatest honour of becoming my wife?”
“Yes,” I nodded, and the tears slowly fell down my cheeks. After falling to my knees with him, Tyler pulled me in his arms. “Yes, baby. Yes! I love you so damn much!”
“Alex slept over Ellie’s last night,” I told Tyler. “I want to go over and say hi.”
“And show off your sparkly ring?” Tyler smirked.
I shrugged my shoulders and smiled back. “I might bring it up.”
After cleaning , Tyler and I made our way over to Ellie’s place. I used my spare key to unlock the door. The intense breakfast smell alerted me that they were in the kitchen.
“Where the hell did you both disappear to last night?” Ellie asked. “I looked everywhere for you.”
“I smiled at my best friend. “I gave Tyler an offer he couldn’t refuse.”
“Niceeeee,” Ellie stretched the word and chuckled. “Want some breakfast?”
“No thanks. We already ate,” I replied.
“You guys got up late too,” Alex said.
“Well, we had a late night.”
Ellie took a bite out of her not so crispy bacon. “I bet you guys did.”
“Tyler made me breakfast this morning.”
“How sweet,” Ellie gushed. “I’m always the one cooking. Adrian hates using the stove.”
“Yeah, but I do a lot of the cleaning, baby,” Adrian laughed. “Team work.”
“What did you guys have?” Ellie asked.
“Eggs, spinach, mushrooms, and of course crispy bacon.”
“That sounds delicious.” Ellie took another bite from her bacon. “Yummy.”
“And then he proposed to me,” I blurted.
“That’s nice,” Ellie said though I wasn’t sure she had heard me correctly. “Wait. What?!”
A wide grin spread on my lips before I reached out and showed her the diamond on my finger. She stood from her seat and pulled me in for a hug.
“Oh, my God!” she exclaimed. “You’re getting married!” She broke the hug and congratulated Tyler.
“Sis, that’s incredible.”
“Thank you.” Alex pulled me in and squeezed tight. “So happy for you.” When he stepped away, he offered Tyler his hand. “Tyler, man. So fucking excited for you, brah.”
“Ifyoueverhurtmysisteri’llfuckingkillyou,” my brother spurted. “Congrats, man.”
I couldn’t help but laugh at Tyler’s response. “If I ever hurt her, she’ll kill me herself.”
“No arguments from me,” Alex said.
“I’ve seen what she can do with that right hook of hers.”
“Don’t you forget it,” I winked.
“Can’t fucking wait.” Ellie rubbed her hands together. “Have you talked about dates or anything?”
“No, but I do have an idea, though not sure Tyler will go for it though.”
He cocked his brows. “What’s the idea?”
“Since we have won a trip to Hawaii...”
“You want a Hawaii wedding?”
I nodded eagerly. “Yes. What do you think?”
“I think that’s a fucking awesome idea, baby!”
“Hawaii, here we come!” Adrian exclaimed.
My heart sank a little in my chest when I glanced at Ellie, who had pouted her lips. “But...pregnancy.”
I wrapped my arms around my bestie and pulled her in for a hug. “It’s not going to be for a while. Bub will be born by then, babe.”
“Yay!” she screamed in my ear. “Hawaii! Here we come!”
After pulling away from Ellie, I rubbed my finger against my ear. “Damn, girl.” My attention shifted to Tyler. “We need to tell your mom.”
“She knew I was going to propose to you,” Tyler admitted. “I just need to tell her you said yes.”
“I hope she’s as happy as I am.”
“Are you kidding?” he chuckled. “My mom loves you! She was so excited when I told her.”
I stepped closer to Tyler and he wrapped his arm around my neck and drew me closer to him for a brief kiss to the temple. “I love you, baby.”
“Love you too.”
“You said yes?” Alice beamed as soon as she opened the door.
I nodded and felt my heart flutter as I thought about Tyler’s proposal that morning. “I did.”
“I couldn’t have asked for a better future daughter-in-law for my son. Congratulations.”
“Thank you, Alice.”
“She’s amazing, isn’t she, mom?”
“She made you love again, Tyler,” his mom smiled. “There is nothing more I wanted for my son than to see him happy.” We stepped inside the house and made our way to the lounge room. Alice turned on the kettle and sat down next to us. “He told me he was going to ask you, but how did he propose?”
I unzipped my bag and found my phone then showed her the photo on my screensaver.
“Is that bacon?” she smiled.
“It’s one of Summer’s favourite things to eat.”
“How thoughtful and personal,” she replied. “Have you set a date?”
“No, but we want to get married in Hawaii,” Tyler said to his mom.
Her eyes widened and she beamed. “How beautiful.”
“Are you okay with that?” I asked her.
“It will be after Ellie’s baby is born, so she and Adrian can come too.”
“Adorable. Looking forward to the birth of their bub.” Alice cleared her throat. “I don’t want to pry, but will I have grandbabies?”
“I definitely want to start a family with Tyler,” I replied. We had spoken about this a few times together and knew that kids were something we wanted.
“Same here, mom, but that might be a little far away.”
“I know, honey. I’m just really excited.”
TWO MONTHS LATER
“So, that was incredible,” Tyler panted and turned his head to me.
“I know. I don’t know what got into me.”
He let out a laugh. “Vodka. Vodka got into you.”
“And then you got into me,” I winked.
Tyler and I were laying in bed, our heavy breaths filled the room. The sounds only dissolved when my phone rang.
“Good timing.” I reached over and picked up my cell from the bedside table. “Hey, Adrian.”
“Are you okay? You sound like you’re out of breath.”
“Tyler and I were just ummm.” I paused for a moment. “Exercising. We were just exercising.”
Adrian chuckled. “Right, well I’m calling because...”
“Tell her ass to get to the hospital!” Ellie screamed in the background.
“Her water broke,” Adrian said.
I quickly sat up and beamed. “I’ll be right there.” My attention shifted to Tyler after I hung up the phone. “Ellie’s water broke.”
“I only had two drinks,” Tyler said. “I’ll drive you.”
“Ellie, you’re doing so well.”
“Baby, not long now we’ll get to see our baby,” Adrian smiled. “I’m so proud of you.”
Ellie wanted me in the delivery room with Adrian. She said she couldn’t handle him alone if she was in too much pain. Of course, being the best friend, I said yes, and I was impressed at how well both were doing.
Tyler waited out in the lounge area while the doctor encouraged Ellie. “Two more pushes!”
“You said the same thing ten pushes agooooooooahhhhhhhh!”
“I know I did. Bub seems to be a little stubborn, but this is it. I promise you. One last push!”
Adrian wiped the sweat that dripped on her forehead with a cooled hand towel. Ellie’s face scrunched as she gave it her all and pushed as hard as she could. The sweet sound of a baby filled the room.
“Congratulations,” the doctor said. “You have a beautiful baby girl.” The doctor cleaned the baby and placed her on Ellie’s chest. Her proud tears mirrored Adrian’s and they gazed at their daughter in awe and admiration.
“She’s perfect,” Ellie breathed.
Adrian kissed his wife on her forehead. “You were amazing. You are amazing.”
My best friend glanced up at me and smiled through her tired eyes. “Thank you so much, Summer.”
“Congratulations, the both of you.”
The next day, Tyler and I visited Ellie, Adrian and their newest family addition.
“Hey guys,” I whispered. As soon as I stepped into their room, I noticed their baby asleep in the bassinet. “How are you doing, babe?”
“Tired, but loving every minute of it.”
“Thanks for last night, Summer. I’m so glad you were here.”
“Of course he was glad,” Ellie laughed. “I wasn’t yelling at him the entire time.”
“She’s so beautiful,” Tyler gushed, as he glanced down at the sleeping girl.
“She takes after her mom,” Adrian replied.
“Summer and Tyler...Adrian and I wanted to ask you something.”
“Sure. What is it?”
“Would you consider being her godparents?”
My eyes widened and I flung my hands over my mouth. “Yes, of course!”
“I will be honored,” Tyler added.
“Have you given your sweet girl a name?”
Ellie nodded, and her lips curved up to her gold flecked eyes. “Her name is Charlotte Summer Rose Colton.”
“Her middle name is Summer?” I gasped. She nodded and I had to stifle a scream. “Ellie!”
“After her favourite aunty.”
“I love you guys so much.”
“We love you too.”
