Chapter 9

It was 3:30 in the morning and I couldn’t sleep. After that kiss with Tyler, he was all that occupied my mind. I could see it on his face that he was freaked out by the moment.

God, I know he hated it. He was my boss, and would probably only want sex, but I swore there was something between us.

I huffed and threw the blanket off my body before I stood up and made my way to the bathroom. As soon as I came back, my phone lit up with a message. Without even looking at the screen, I knew it was Tyler unable to sleep as well.

I picked up the cell and smiled when I saw his text.

Can’t sleep.

Do you just sit in your bed waiting for me to turn on the light?

No. A few seconds later a second text came through. Maybe.

The smile on my face grew wider, until I sent him my next reply. Do you want to come over? I waited with baited breaths for his response.

You mean now?

I don’t know if that’s such a good idea.

We don’t have to talk about anything you don’t want to talk about. And I promise I’ll behave myself.

It’s not you misbehaving I’m worried about ;)

Just get your ass here.

I knew Tyler would be over in a flash, so I quickly grabbed my robe and made my way downstairs. As soon as I landed at the bottom of the staircase, I heard his light tap on the door.

“Shit. It’s freezing!” The crisp air blew in as soon as I unlocked the entrance.

“You’re not planning on going for a run this morning, are you?”

I shook my head and rubbed the length of my arms to keep warm. “No way. I’m too tired.”

Tyler stepped inside the house and we both made our way to the living room.

“Why’s it so cold here?”

“I didn’t feel it until I got out of bed. I’ll grab a blanket and we can hang out on the couch.” I opened up the linen closet which was near the entrance to the laundry, I grabbed a quilt and brought it back to Tyler who was already seated down.“This should help.” I sat down next to Tyler and threw the blanket over both of us. “So, what’s up with your insomnia? Seems as though it’s a nightly thing for you.”

“It is. I’ve always had trouble sleeping.”

“You know soon we’re not going to be able to do this.”

Tyler narrowed his eyes and moved the blanket further up his body. “Do what?”

“Well, if you remember, I don’t actually live here so you won’t be able to know when I get up in the middle of the night.”

“I forgot. What about our morning runs?”

“You’re just doing to have to come by my house first, but don’t worry, I don’t live too far from here.” I looked down at my arms when I felt the chill wash over my body, and I could see goosebumps appear on my skin.

“You okay?”

“Yeah, I might try putting on the heater.” I got up from the couch and turned the dial for the heater to switch it on, before I returned to my warm seat next to Tyler, who lifted up the blanket for me to cuddle under. “Thanks.”

“Do you feel warmer?”

“Hasn’t kicked in yet. It’s still so cold.”

Tyler wrapped his arm around me and pulled me closer to him. I closed my eyes as his warmth radiated my skin. “Just until you feel better.”

“Thanks. That actually helps."

“In that case.” Tyler pushed me away from him and laughed.

“I’m kidding. Come back.”

I snuggled up next to him and closed my eyes while his fingers traced my sensitive skin. It didn’t take me long to fall asleep.

“Goodnight, beautiful,” he whispered, before he pressed his sweet lips against my temple.

“What’s going on here?”

The sound of Ellie’s timid voice caused both Tyler and I to jump off the couch.

“Shit. Hi!”

A smile played on her lips while her eyes moved between Tyler and I. “So, this is what the two of you were getting up to while we were away?”

“Nothing happened,” we both said in unison.

I knew that was a lie. The night before Tyler and I shared the most memorable kiss of my life, and all I could think about was reliving that moment again with him.

“Sure…that’s why it’s so hot in here?” Ellie fanned herself and her grin widened.

“Oh, yeah. I definitely feel that,” Adrian added.

“Shit. I left the heater on.”

Ellie swiveled around and turned off the dial to the heater before her attention shifted back to us. “So, how was the party?”

“Oh. About that.”

“Um. I should go,” Tyler interrupted before he picked the blanket off the floor and placed it back down on the couch.

“Okay. I’ll walk you out.”

After saying goodbye to Ellie and Adrian, I escorted Tyler out the front door.

“I’m sorry. I didn’t know she was coming back early, and I’m sorry I knocked out on you last night.”

Tyler’s lips curved up. “It’s okay. I fell asleep too.”

Tyler nodded. I wasn’t sure what that meant considering he had a sleeping problem.

“Okay, well I won’t be here tonight, but I’ll go for a run in the morning.”

“I’ll text you if I’m going to meet you.”

Tyler smiled before he turned around and walked towards his home. I wasn’t expecting a goodbye kiss considering the way we left things out the front of the house the night before, but I knew after a kiss like that, we definitely need to talk about it.

After Tyler went out of view, I turned around and stepped back inside the house before I closed the door. As soon as I found myself in the lounge room, I noticed Ellie standing there with her arms folded and that smile back on her beautiful face.

“Okay. Spill.”

“Tyler and I didn’t have sex if that’s what you were wondering.”

“It was…but that’s beside the point. What happened?”

I took a deep breath and sighed. “Okay. So, the party Tyler took me to last night was an engagement party.”

I nodded slowly at Ellie. “For Drake.”

As soon as her mouth gaped open, she screamed. “What?”

“Drake as in your ex?” Adrian yelled from the kitchen.

“Yes, the one and only.”

The whole time I explained to Ellie and Adrian the events of the engagement, their mouths and eyes were wide open and at one point, Ellie had an audible grasp.

“I can’t believe what he said to you. The nerve of him after a whole year! And Alex should have told you!”

"I know it was so uncomfortable."

“Okay. What I don’t get, is how you ended up asleep on the couch cuddling our hot neighbor.”

“When I said nothing happened, I mean that we didn’t sleep together, but he kissed me.”

Ellie squealed so loud that Adrian covered his ears with his hands.

“Oh my God. How was it?”

“The best kiss of my life.”

And that was the truth. Kissing Tyler had sparked something inside of me that I had no idea I had lost, and the thought of kissing him again only made my heart flutter.

“Do you like him?” Ellie asked.

“I might like him, but we want different things. I’d want to date and he would just want to keep things casual. It wouldn’t work out.”

“You could always-,”

"I can't," I cut Ellie off. "Not since that night. It’s just not who I am anymore, and it’s not something I want to tell him about either.”

It was Monday morning and the rest of the weekend I spent pretty much alone. Tyler hadn’t spoken to me, and even though I wasn’t expecting him to, it still kind of stung.

After my morning run, I went back home for a quick shower and change before I made my way to work. In the afternoon just before it was time to go home, Lisa, Finlay’s assistant knocked on my door.

“Hey, Lisa. What’s up?”

“Finlay’s called a meeting.”

I narrowed my eyes. It was unusual for Finlay to call a meeting unless it was to introduce a new employee, but I knew that wasn’t happening so my curiosity was piqued. “Do you know what it’s about?”

“I think so. Do you remember the competition they had for best employee of the year, and the winner gets an all expense paid trip to Hawaii?”

“Wait. He’s announcing that today?” I exclaimed.

“Yes. Now I know who the winner was supposed to be…”

“What do you mean?”

Lisa stepped in and slowly closed the door before she took her seat opposite me. “Finlay chose you.”

My hands flung over to cover my gaped mouth. “Are you serious?”

Lisa held out her hand. “Wait. He changed his mind at the last minute. I’m sorry. He picked Cassidy.”

Oh, God. Anyone but that fucking tramp!

“She’s screwing him! I mean, that’s the only explanation!”

“I’ve seen her act differently over the last week with him.”

My muscles quivered just before my body tensed. Cassidy had a habit of trying to take things away from me.

“I’m livid! How could she do this?”

“I’m sorry, Summer.”

I exhaled a harsh breath. “It doesn’t matter anymore. Thanks for telling me.”

Lisa and I stood up and left my office and made our way to the meeting room. We took our seats next to each other and through my peripheral vision, I could see Tyler sneak glances in my direction.

“So, we’re here because we have a very important thing to discuss,” Finlay announced, while he walked into the boardroom. “As you know, there was a competition for employee of the year. The managers and I had a very long discussion about who the winner should be. We’ve chosen this person because she is the hardest worker here.”

I turned to Lisa who mouthed the words Hard Worker before making the hand gesture of a blow job. I dipped my head low and tried to suppress the laugh that was desperate to escape.

Finlay continued his speech. “She knows everything about this office and is well liked and respected amongst her peers.”

Lisa and I rolled our eyes together.

“We could not have thought of a more fitting person to win this prize. And the winner of the all expense paid trip for two to Hawaii is…”
