Chapter 10

So, your birthday is next week and you asked all your friends to throw you a surprise party, because they love you and you deserve it! You even gave Reynold’s phone number to Sofia, in case she wants to invite him (wink, wink). Of course she was sceptical, since you two are not exclusive. But, you can always hope.

“Are you listening to me?”

I’m daydreaming again!

“Where you thinking about Reynold? You are not even touching your lunch.”

“Actually, I was thinking about my birthday!” You say that with a sense of pride, so she thinks you are not always thinking about him. “How is the surprise party coming up?”

“You still expect me to throw a surprise party that you asked for?”

“Yes! Because you love me.”

“Ah! How about we do just dinner and cake with the gang?”

“Well, to be honest, I don’t feel like celebrating this year. I would be fine with just pizza and some drinks at home with you and the girls. My mom keeps reminding me I’m still not married and that’s getting me frustrated lately.”

“Oh, shame. I know what you mean. When my mother talks about that, I usually zoom out. Don’t let that bother you. I know it’s not what you want to hear, but it will happen to you. Just don’t forget to make your dreams come true, not just your mom’s.”

She’s right! All my life, everything I did was because my mother decided for me. She even picked my college major and everything! And now, I’m running the family’s company, waiting for her to retire so maybe I can finally do what I want to do. I have so many dreams, travel the world, learn a third language, maybe do my masters and open a little bookstore. I love reading and the smell of books, maybe I could open a place where people can come in and read, enjoy a cup of coffee, or buy some books. All that I had to put on hold when my mother asked me to come back home so I could take care of the business.

“I know, I just feel like I can’t leave the company now. Too much depend on me and before my mother retires, I have to be there.”

“Just don’t forget to make your voice heard.”

Few days later…

You were talking about work, reporting to her the latest numbers, until…

“Seems like your nephew needs to start therapy! So, you have to take him to the sessions, and the first one will be next week, I will come with.”

Your nephew is 4 years old and doesn’t talk. The whole family is worried that that might be due to some trauma he had, maybe a fight he saw of his parents, so you are taking him for a professional evaluation.

I would do anything for them! And since I don’t have children of my own, I consider the 4 of them mine.

“Sure, no problem. Just let me know when and where.”

“I will text you the details. Your sister-in-law will be there too, but as usual, your brother is busy.” You rolls your eyes, because it’s typical. “I’m going to a meeting now, we will talk better later. Bye now.”

“Talk later.”

Few days pass by, you don’t see Reynold because he went on a business trip.

“How are things over there?” But he calls you every day.

“Things are good! Work is the same, family is good. Just my nephew that is going to start therapy.”

“Oh really? Is he okay?”

“He’s fine I guess, just because he still can’t talk, so we are just a bit worried.”

“I’m sure it’s nothing, maybe he’s just shy.”

“Maybe you are right. How is the trip going?”

“Boring! I don’t even know why they needed me here.”

“Then, come back!”

“I wish it was that easy. Excited for your birthday?”

“Don’t remind me!”

“Why not? Remember the deal we made?”

Few days ago, you told him that he could do whatever he wanted to you in bed, but on your birthday, he would become your slave.

“Yeah, I remember that part! Maybe the only good thing about that day.”

“Do you have any plans for the day?”

“Well, I asked all my friends to throw me a surprise party! They haven’t called you yet?”

“No… I didn’t get any call so far. Wait, you asked for a surprise party?”

“Yes! And if they love me like they say, they will do it. But I will have to check with Sofia why she hasn’t called yet.” You chuckle.

“No need for that. Maybe she just have something else in mind.”

“We’ll just have to wait and see.”

“Well, I’m going to let you sleep now. I know how cranky you get when you sleep late.”

“You know me so well… Talk tomorrow?”

When you hang up, you find six missed calls from Stephen.

Still? I wish he would just stop.

Your intercom buzzes.

“Hannah! Please let me in!”

“Is that Stephen screaming?”
