Chapter 11

Stephen is at your door, buzzing your intercom and calling you.

“Hannah, please let me in. I need to talk to you.”

I’m just going to ignore him.

“Please babe! I know you are in there. Let me talk to you, it won’t take long.”

You really don’t want to talk to him but it’s late and having him screaming outside your building, might get him arrested. Not that you care so much, but you don’t want to bother the neighbours with your issues.

“Hannah, please. I’m begging you.”

As much as I hate this…

You open the gate to let him up. Then, he rings the doorbell.

“Hi. Thank you for opening the door this time.”

“You have five minutes…”

“Please babe, don’t be like that.

“Please stop calling me babe! We are over, accept that.”

“I love you, I can’t accept that! You were the best thing that happened to me, I can’t let you go like that.”

“And yet, you cheated on me, hid a child from me, and expect me to forget all that? In your dreams!”

“Honey, I promise you I thought I was doing the right thing. I never meant to hurt you.”

“But you did it anyway. You should have talked to me about the kid, maybe I would have understood. But the other girls? That’s a hard no! You chose to sleep with someone else on my birthday, when you told me you went on a business trip with your dad! Who the fuck does that?”

“I know I made mistakes. Please forgive me.”

“At least hear me out.”

You stand there with your arms crossed.

“First of all, I’m not with the mother of my kid. When I met you, I found out days earlier that she was about to give birth, I didn’t even know she was pregnant. We broke up long ago, she moved to a different city and we never saw each other again.

“But the kid was born and you still never told me.”

“I was afraid you would leave me, I’m sorry. I thought I was protecting us, what we had. I just wanted to stay on that bubble a little while longer.”

“But you kept ghosting on me from time to time. And each time you came back, I forgave you. You promised you would change, but kept doing the same.”

“I’m sorry!”

“I heard that before over and over… You are never going to change.”

“I will! Just give me another chance.”

“How do you expect me to forgive all the cheating?”

“I will make it up to you.”

“There’s nothing in this world you can do to make me forget everything you did to me… Nothing.” You take a deep breath, trying to calm down and keep your angry tears from falling. “You hurt me so much… I introduced you to my family, we made plans for the future, I considered you my future husband already, and that was still not enough for you. Maybe you should go back to your friends that promised to fuck your brains out, because your girlfriend wasn’t up for the job!”

He stands in front of you, with pain on his eyes, wanting to hug and never let you go, but he’s too afraid of your reaction.

“Please leave, now.”

Now, he’s holding back tears.

“Babe…” He steps forward, and you step back.

“No, please go away. I’m done with you, I’m done with this.” Your voice comes out almost as a whisper. “I was there for you when you had the car accident. I supported you when you left your job and changed careers, and started all over. I satisfied your every need, and not once I complained, because I believed in you, because I believed in us. I was in love with you, but you saw that as an opportunity to do whatever you wanted believing I would always forgive you. Guess what? I reached my limit! So please, just stop calling or bothering me. I won’t change my mind and I don’t want to see you ever again.”

“Don’t do this… I love you.”

This time, you don’t say anything. You are already tired of repeating yourself, and you just wait there for him to leave.

“Okay, I will leave. But I’ll keep trying, I’ll make you realize that we belong together.”

He finally leaves, and you close the door behind him. You are so tired after that, that you fall asleep as soon as you put your head on the pillow.
