You are getting your second cup of coffee when Sofia calls you.
“Thanks babe, but you are shouting.”
“Have you received a lot of calls so far?”
“A few. Some of them actually woke me up.”
After your night with Reynold, he stayed for a few minutes to talk and left. You thought he would spend the night this time, since it was already late and it was your birthday, but he insisted on leaving, which made you a little sad and confused.
“So, are you around?”
“Don’t be mad…”
“You had to go on the trip?”
“Yes, I’m sorry. I promise we can go out Friday. Drinks on me!”
“I’m getting drunk on Friday… Yay!”
“Please don’t get me broke.”
You both laugh and chat, until you hang up. All day you get a few more phone calls from your family, texts, even your dad calls, something he hasn’t done in a long time. Actually when you saw his ID, you thought either something bad happened or he dialled the wrong number.
I haven’t heard from Reynold at all today. But since he already wished me a happy birthday with a delicious present, it’s okay. I guess he’s busy with work.
You decide to go to the gym after work, head home for some movies alone with popcorn and wine, until you fall asleep. Since you are all caught up at work, you might stay home tomorrow. Your assistant knocks on your door and enters with a big flower arrangement for you, with a card attached.
“I know you don’t want to talk to me, and I understand. I know I hurt you really bad, but I couldn’t let this day pass without wishing you a Happy Birthday! Love you, always. – Stephen.”
It’s a cute arrangement, so you put on your desk, even thou they came from your ex who you despise, and the card can go to trash. By the end of the day, you are still getting calls from your friends, your mother asked you to go by her place to talk about work so you promise to go after gym. She eventually asks you to go before because it’s urgent. You get worried so you leave work and straight to her place. You use your key to let yourself in, and it’s dark, which you assume she’s not back from work yet. You turn on the lights and people scream: SURPRISE!!
You almost have a heart attack. You look at everybody to see who’s there. Your siblings and your mother, your nephews and all your girlfriends.
“Oh my God! You guys got me!”
Sofia comes with the cake and candles already singing Happy Birthday and everybody joins in.
I’m not a crier but seems like this will do.
“Thank you so much.”
You blow out the candles and hug everybody. You all sit around to eat the cake and chat. Some give you presents, your mother gives you a necklace and a pair of earrings.
“Thanks mom. I want to put it on right now.”
“You are welcome, dear.”
“Did I pull it off?” Sofia asks.
“You did, I’m proud. I wanted to kill you this morning for being away today, but now I love you even more.”
“I love you too.”
You feel a hint of sadness because Reynold is not there and you didn’t talk all day, and Sofia notices.
“I didn’t call him because he’s not your boyfriend, it wouldn’t feel right for him to be here among your family.”
“It’s okay, don’t worry about it. Thank you so much for this.” You hug her, appreciating her effort to make your day special.
“We are still going out on Friday.”
“You are the best girlfriend ever!” You both laugh.
The night dies down and people start to leave. You help clean it up and by the time you are done, it’s 11pm.
“I’m not going to work tomorrow!” You announce.
“How come?” Your mother is surprised.
“It’s my birthday present to myself!”
“Really? Well, lucky for you I don’t have much work tomorrow, so I will replace you at the company.”
Your mother rolls her eyes at you but you don’t care because you get to stay at home. You get home, tired. Your phone was on silence so you didn’t notice the text you got from Reynold.
Reynold: “Are you home?”
Hannah: “I am now.”
As soon as you send the text, your doorbell rings.
