Chapter 9

It’s been a week since that day, and every day after that, Reynold stops by your place at the same time bringing snacks, hanging out and that all leads to some sexy time under your sheets.

“Life is beautiful again!”

“Ah! This guy must be treating you very well.”

I can’t hide my happiness… I was on a dry spell for so long, I feel lighter now.

“The thing is, we only have a physical relationship, but sometimes it feels like it’s more than that.”

“What do you mean?”

“Well, we are not dating, per se, and by the way we met, I’m guessing he’s seeing other people. But, when we are together… it feels special, he makes me feel special.” You trail, trying to describe the feeling you have when he is around.

“Don’t get your hopes up, hon! He’s maybe doing the same to all the women he meets.”

“Yeah, you are right. I can’t lose focus of what this is.” You come back to reality.

“Exactly! I don’t want to see you hurt again over some guy.”

This is just sex, and nothing more. It’s all sweets and rainbows, but we are not exclusive. I wish we were thou…

The next day…

“Hello Mrs. Brown! We didn’t speak yesterday, sorry about that.” He called on your lunch break, brightening your day.

“Hi Reynold. How are you?”

“Good, just work. Are you free later? Can we meet?”

“Yeah, but it’s that time of the month for me, if you know what I mean.”

“It’s okay, I still want to come over. Pizza and beer?” He chuckles. “I’ll even bring chocolate, I heard you ladies like that this time of the month.”

“It’s like you read my mind!”

So considerate of him.

“Alright! I’ll let you go back to work. See you later.”

Aww… He didn’t have to do that! He’s so different from the guys I dated… Okay! Stop dreaming about him!

The rest of the day passes as a blur, your period cramps are on their peak today. You barely concentrated on your work, and you wished you were working remotely.

I can’t wait to get home and get under my blankets.

Stephen: “Hey babe!” You get a text from your ex.

Ugh! Not today…

Workday is over! You rush home to avoid being stuck on traffic, and your mom calls you on the way.

“Hi honey! How are you?”

“Hey mom! I’m good, how are things with you?”

“Everything is fine, just work that never ends. Can’t wait for my retirement party!”

She has been working for so long, and she’s been talking about her retirement like it’s the day her life will finally start. But she deserves it, she divorced your father when you were 4, so she raised you and your brothers on her own.

“Seems like you are planning a big party!”

“You have no idea! And since it’ll be during summer, I’m planning a big barbecue by the pool.”

“Sounds like a good plan.”

“So, your birthday is coming up. What are your plans? Is it this one that you are going to introduce me to my future son-in-law?”

This again… I’m about to be 29 and my mother keeps pressuring me to get married and have kids.

“I’m afraid not, mom.”

“I hope it’s soon! I want my grandkids already.”

I love my mom, but I hate when she reminds me that I’m still single and childless. And since my brothers are already married, that conversation is constant lately.

“Don’t worry, mom. When I do find someone, you’ll be the first to know.”

“Alright. Talk later, love you honey.”

“Love you too.”

You finally get home, shower and put some comfortable clothes.

Is he really coming? Since we can’t have sex, what’s his motivation?

Your doorbell rings, getting you out of your thoughts. You open the door to a big and bright smiling Reynold, with pizza, chocolate and a few beers.

“Hi.”

My evening just got better. His presence makes all my problems and cramps go away.

“Hey. Come in.”

“I didn’t know which chocolate you like the most, so I brought you my favourite, hope you like it too.”

“That’s actually mine too. Thank you.”

“Are you feeling better?”

“Not really.”

I am with him here, but he doesn’t need to know that.

“Let’s get you some food, maybe it’ll help.”

You both sit by the couch and start to watch some soccer game. Then you start talking and completely ignore the TV while devouring the pizza. He offers his shoulder so you can lean on to be more comfortable and you feel a warm feeling inside, a feeling of security you haven’t felt in a long time. While you talk about your problems at work, he listens intently like it’s the only thing he cares about in the world. He kisses your forehead, caress your knuckles with his fingers, makes jokes to make you laugh… You don’t want that moment to end.

“Look at the time! It’s late.” He speaks first.

“Oh… I didn’t even realized we have been talking for that long.”

“Yeah, I guess you forget about time when you are having fun.”

“Yes…” You don’t want him to go, but you can’t really ask him to stay.

“I should go, let you rest so you can wake up better tomorrow.”

“Yeah, I should get some sleep. Thank you for the evening.”

“I’m glad you enjoyed it.”

He walks to the door, but you can feel he doesn’t want to go either. You have to be strong and let him go, as you remember your talk with Sofia.

“Don’t get your hopes up, hon! He might be doing that to all the women he meets.”

“Text me when you get home.”

“Sure will.”
