Back In Town
Ethan text me when he arrived home from Sweden and I couldn't hide the excitement on my face. I knew being with someone like him was risky but the fact that he let me know he was back was a huge step. I shot him a quick text letting him know I was glad and put my phone down.
Tara was eying me suspiciously and said, "Who was that?"
I hadn't told her anything about Ethan and I yet because I wasn't sure there was anything to tell but now that my doubts about us were put to rest I figured now was the time to admit our "relationship" to her.
"So there's this guy I've been seeing."
She ran over to the couch and said, "Spill it, bitch!"
All I could do was laugh which made her even more eager to get the story. I turned to face her and took a deep breath.
"A few weeks ago, when Ethan took me for lunch, we got into a bit of an argument and I stormed out of the bistro. Well I ended up in that little coffee shop that has the best mocha latte and started reading this book that I was so engrossed in that I lost track of time. When I looked up there he was, just standing there, with the most terrified look on his face. I was crying and being me and he brought me to his house so we could finish talking and we kind of admitted our feelings for each other."
She screamed so loud I had to plug my ears from the shrills coming from her mouth. She jumped up and started dancing around singing, "Ethan and Britt sitting in a tree, F U C K I N G..."
I hit her with the pillow that was behind my back and said, "Seriously? No, it's not like that Tara. We agreed to take things slow, very slow."
"WHAT? You finally lost your virginity, to some total stranger by the way, and now that you have that yummy man to yourself, you're going to make him wait? Come on, Britt, tell me you're lying?"
I faked a laugh and said, "Right? Yeah, ironic isn't it? But I just don't want to rush into anything with him Tara. What if he finds out how inexperienced I really am and breaks up with me?"
"Britt, that man is not that shallow. I have seen the way he looks at you and I can promise you he would do anything to keep you, even if that meant keeping it in his pants until you decide you want to take it out and play."
I slapped her arm as she started laughing and I couldn't believe how amazing this girl was and how horrible I had been to lie to her about everything but I knew how protective she was and if she found out about what really happened and this whole submissive thing, she would lose her shit.
"He just got back from Sweden and that was him letting me know he was at the office."
"Girl if you could have seen the way your face lite up when you answered that text, damn you got it bad and from the sounds of it so does he."
"You think? I mean it's only been like a week or two. I just hope I am enough for him."
"I wish you saw yourself the way others saw you, Britt. You are a beautiful, thoughtful, bad ass chef who has proven herself to more people in this city and not just because of your last name but because of how talented you are. If you think for one second that Ethan thinks you aren't good enough for him, you are crazy."
She gave me a hug and went to her room to get ready for work while I sat on the couch staring at the text from Ethan like a love-sick puppy. Just as I was about to put it down it started ringing. I looked at the screen and saw James name pop up and immediately answered it.
"Britt, thank goodness you answered. Can you please come into work today? Chef Roberto has become ill and we have a huge brunch meeting to host for the mayor's office."
"I'm on my way, James." I said as I jumped from the couch and ran to my room to get dressed.
When I made it to the restaurant, the entire staff were running around in a panic trying to figure out where the chef had put the menu for the brunch when James came in with a piece of paper in his hands and said, "I got it. Britt, you're here. Thank you again for coming to my rescue."
He handed me the sheet and I scanned it quickly before shouting orders to the others and starting on the main course. "James, I know Chef Roberto planned this perfectly but there are going to be some changes since we don't have access to a lot of these items this morning. Instead we will have a rack of lamb, eggs benedict with hollandaise, fresh fruit salad with a honey poppy seed dressing and pan fried potatoes."
"Sounds delicious Britt, I doubt these people will care if the are served lamb rather than beef wellington anyway so whatever you decide to do is fine with me. You haven't let me down yet."
After he walked out I got to work on the marinade for the lamb, since I didn't have hours for it to soak in the sauce, I placed all the contents in a bag along with the lamb and vacuum packed it before placing it in the fridge for 30 minutes.
Everyone had gotten to work on their dishes and just in time for the guests to arrive. We started with a fruit salad or cold soup appetizer as we continued prepping for the main course. Once everyone was done with the first course, I decided to let the lamb rest a little longer so we served French toast stuffed with cream cheese and fresh strawberries.
I removed the lamb from the fridge and sliced it into individual steaks then placed four of them in a pan with white wine, butter and a sprig of rosemary. After they were slightly seared on each side, I placed them on a sheet and repeated the process until I had all twenty of them ready for the oven. The potatoes were placed into the same pan and tossed in the remaining juices.
We began plating the main course and watched as the last one left the kitchen before adding the finishing touches to the dessert, white chocolate bread pudding with rum sauce. When the last plate was served, the entire staff heaved a collective sigh of relief. We had successfully handled another potential disaster without anyone knowing and the Mayor was blown away by the food.
"Another great job thanks to your quick thinking Britt. Now let's get this kitchen cleaned up and get some rest before the supper rush tonight. I hope you will be able to come back?"
"Of course James, I don't have any other plans."
Once everything was put away and the dishes were cleaned, I went home to get a few hours of sleep before I had to be back at 4. I text Ethan to let him know I would be working tonight then set my phone down while I took a nap.
When I woke up, Ethan had replied with a short text explaining he would be stuck at the office for the rest of the night as well but promised we would do something tomorrow night. I smiled as I placed my phone in my bag and walked out the room right into Tara.
"Whoa! Where's the fire?"
"I'm sorry Tara I wasn't paying attention. Where are you going?"
"Kyle is taking me out tonight." She said while wiggling her eyebrows.
"You mean Mr. So busy that you I haven't met him yet, is taking you out tonight and on the night when I conveniently have to go to work?"
"I know, I know and I'm sorry but you will meet him soon. His office is throwing a Christmas party in a few weeks and I already RSVP'd for both of us."
"Tara! You can't just RSVP for me to a party on such short notice and without asking me first. What if I had plans already?"
She looked at me with a sad face and said "But you missed out on Thanksgiving and we always do Christmas together, boyfriends or not."
She was right, we had spent every holiday together since she moved in and I wasn't about to break tradition again.
"Ok but can you get another invitation for Ethan?"
"You got it babe!" She gave me an air kiss then waltzed out the door right behind me.
I made it to work and immediately began prepping, the place was packed and buzzing with chatter about the new chef and her innovative cooking techniques and with each passing compliment I began to feel more relaxed. Working in chaos always helped me focus and helped me find my creativity.
The night passed just as fast as brunch did and before I knew it I was heading home in total exhaustion. A light sprinkle of snow was beginning to fall and I just had to stop and take it all in. I stood on the walkway of my house, closed my eyes and tilted my head up to the sky, letting the snow flakes fall onto my nose.
It felt like time stood still as I remained rooted in my spot thinking about the last few months and how my life had suddenly felt complete. Not only had I secured my dream job and landed the perfect man but I had also opened myself up to a whole new world and I had never been more sure of who I was than now.
Britt really is good when she is in control, don't you think?
I'm glad Ethan is acting like a normal person for once letting her know what he's doing.
I don't know about y'all but I am so ready for the real stuff to happen and for her to finally meet Zeus! Will it be everything she expected or will this whole thing fall apart????
