There's Been An Accident
My heart sank for him as I walked to the edge of the stairs eavesdropping on his phone call. I felt bad doing it but he shouldn't be alone right now, especially if there was bad news involved. I gripped the side rail and walked upstairs when I heard him talking again.
"How bad is she?
When I reached the top of the stairs, he was pacing back and forth in front of his bed still talking on the phone. His face was filled with worry and I felt helpless as he looked at me with fear in his eyes. He put his finger up, signaling that he would talk to me as soon as he got of the phone, so I nodded and left him to finish his conversation in private.
After I got back downstairs, I did the only thing I could think of and made a quick omelet. He remained on the phone for another half an hour before coming back downstairs and sitting on a stool at the island. He placed his head in his hands and sighed.
"Is everything ok?" I asked as I walked around the raised bar and rested my hand on his shoulder.
He slid his hands down his face and said, "No. My partner in Sweden was involved in an accident last night and they don't know if she will pull through."
He began to shake so I turned the stool and wrapped my arms around him.
"I'm so sorry. Do you need to go?"
He shook his head yes then said, "I am the closest thing she has to family."
I could feel the pain in his voice as he tried so hard not to scream so I grabbed my phone and called Tara. After three rings she answered in a sleepy voice and said, "You better be dying or I will kill you for calling me this early."
"I'm sorry Tara but I need you to come get me."
"Where? What happened? Who do I need to kill?" She said while shuffling around her room, opening and closing drawers looking for clothes.
"No one. I am fine, I just need you to come get me from Ethan's. He has an emergency and has to leave town."
He pulled the phone away from my ear and put it to his. "Tara, go back to bed. I will bring her home on my way to the airport."
He hung up and put the phone down then placed both his hands on the sides of my face saying, "Let me get a few bags packed then we will eat breakfast and I will bring you home."
This had to be his way of coping with his feelings so I let him do just that as I finished up. Placing an omelet and some home fried potatoes on one plate along with a side of fruit, I set them down on the table before making myself the same.
Eating as fast as I could, I noticed him shuffling his potatoes around and I knew he wanted to leave as soon as possible but he didn’t want to hurt my feelings by turning down my food. I grabbed his hand and squeezed it before picking up our plates.
“Go pack your bags. I’ll be right here when your done.” I said as I was scraping the food off the plate into the trash then turned around and began washing them.
He hurried up the stairs, pausing to say, “Thank you for understanding, Brittany.”
Smiling back at him, I watched as he continued to his room then heard him dashing around fixing his bags in haste as I finished cleaning up the kitchen. Twenty minutes later I had just placed the last plate on the counter when he came up behind me.
“Ready?” He asked.
I dried my hands then grabbed my things from the chair and followed him out to the car. As he drove me to my house, his knuckles were turning white from how hard he was gripping the steering wheel and his knee was bobbing up and down so hard I was afraid his foot would go through the floor board.
He pulled into my driveway and as soon as we stopped, I reached for the door handled and swung it open, jumping out and running to his side of the car. I opened his door and pulled him into a hug as he wrapped his arms around me so tight he was cutting off my air supply.
"You need to go. Let me know as soon as you land." I said when I pulled back looking into his eyes.
"Thank you again, Brittany." He cupped my face, pulling me into a long, passionate kiss before he released me.
I pushed his door closed and waved as he backed out and drove off down the road. I knew the flight was long and with the time change I was not quite sure when he would be calling me but I knew he needed to go, after all, she was his law partner.
Walking up to the door, Tara had already opened it and was holding two mugs of coffee and a sympathetic smile.
"You okay there, tiger?"
Nodding my head as I passed her and into the house, I threw my things on the floor and took the mug from her hand.
"I'm worried, Tara."
"Don't be afraid, he will be fine. He flies all the time."
"Not about that, about the fact that he dropped everything to rush off to Sweden to be by this girl Julia's side. I mean he did say she was like family and he was all she had left, whatever that means but I can't help but feel a little jealous and hurt."
"Ethan would never do anything to hurt you, besides if he says she is his friend then you should trust him." She said matter-of-factly as she sipped her coffee.
"I guess you're right, he has never lied to me before so why would he start now?"
She patted my leg and said, "Good girl. Now, tell me how last night went?"
My eyes started to sparkle as I recalled the end of our evening. "It was magical, Tara. The party was beautiful, like something out of a magazine and his partners are really nice. But the best part is, he asked me to be his girlfriend."
"SHUT UP!" She said turning towards me.
"Yes. He had one of the tables outside set up with glasses and champagne and he just came out and asked me. It was like a dream of the most perfect night. Then we kissed at 12." I placed my hand on my chest and closed my eyes, reliving the sweet moment between us when she started chuckling.
Opening my eyes and glaring at her, she cleared her throat and looked away. "Sorry, go on."
"That's it. We went home then when I woke up he offered to make breakfast but I knew he couldn't cook so I went downstairs and made something but then the phone call came in about Julia and you know the rest of the story."
"Damn, no nookie?"
"No, in fact he didn't even sleep in the bed with me, or at least I don't think he did. I passed out as soon as we got home and when I woke up he was coming out the shower but his side of the bed was still unmade and his pillow was missing."
"Awwwww. He didn't want to take advantage of you, so sweet of him." She said as she rolled her eyes.
"Why did you say it like that? He is a gentleman and I find it chivalrousr that he wants our first time to be while I'm sober."
"Yeah, yeah, yeah, all that sweet shit will give you a cavity. Girl, have a few glasses of wine, let the alcohol consume you then let him rock your socks off. Inebriated sex is the best because you can let loose and be someone you aren't, try things you've always wanted to try and be the freak you're hiding inside." She said as she nudged me with her elbow.
Tensing, I laughed along with her and wondered if she might have started suspecting something about my secret life then I started to feel guilty again that I was keeping it from her. Mistress' words came back into my head as I thought about how my lies were going to complicate things.
"Yeah, me a freak, ha ha." I paused then said, "Actually, Tara, there is something I need to tell you."
She looked over at me with a suspicious look then her expression turned stern and she said, "Talk."
I bit my nail trying to think of a way to tell her what exactly had been happening the last few months but there was no easy way to tell her so I just started at the beginning. "I never lost my virginity."
Her eyes got wide and she stared at me in confusion before I started speaking again, "Let me explain. See I went there and followed all the directions but when I got there I had been placed into some sort of, class."
"What kind of class?" She said as she folded her arms over her chest.
"A class for submissives." I said watching her for some sort of reaction but she just continued staring at me, waiting for me to continue. "I am being trained to be a submissive at the most elite club in town."
Flinching away from her, I waited for screaming or hitting but they never came. Instead my best friend sat there like a deer caught in headlights while my stomach turned in anticipation of what she would say to me about lying and the sudden lifestyle I had just taken on.
Oh no, Julia is hurt! What do you think Ethan will do when he sees her? Do you think she will make it through? And if she doesn't, will he have to stay in Sweden to run the firm? This doesn't sound good for him, especially since he and Britt are now dating and he was supposed to be training her alter ego Katiya.
Britt really is an amazing person but I can't help but think she is eager to let him go because she doesn't want to blow her secret and if he isn't around she can train with Mistress and not him. Maybe she is afraid she won't be able to handle him!
I am so glad she finally told Tara the truth but what will she say? Will she be mad at her for lying or will she think she is crazy? Now if we could just get her to be honest with Ethan before something horrible happens or she loses him.
