“Boss? Where are you?” I could hear Jason’s voice inside my room. For some reason, I couldn’t yell out. I just laid there with her face in my head. She ran from me and I knew her reasons. This right heat was why she ran. If only I could see her one last time. If only I could tell her that I love her. My eyes started to close and I was doing my best to keep them open. If I die, she will die. They will kill her and I won’t be able to protect her. I tried my most damn to let out a sound. I felt hands touch me and I could make out some voices, but that was the last thing I remember.
“Gin,” Betty announce laying her cards on the table.
“I don’t know why I play this game with you?”
“Because you have nothing better to do on your rounds. Tell me, how are things?”
“Good, same as always. You Betty I’m going to have to go soon.”
“You know Robby might be able to help you out.” I looked up at her.
“What do you mean? You didn’t tell him about me did you?” Betty shook her head.
“No, I haven’t said anything, but he has connections that just might help. I mean if you did tell him about your situation.”
“I just can’t. I’m sorry and I appreciate the offer, but the less anyone knows about the better. I just can’t bring anyone into my story. It’s way too dangerous for me and anyone around me.” Betty smiled at me and patted my hand.
“If anything changes and you need help. I know he will help.”
“Just exactly what does Robby do?” I asked eyeing her. Of course, all she gave me was a smile. I just shook my head and laid my cards on the table. “Gin,” I said with a smile.
Later on that night. I had just gotten out of the shower and decided to find a movie on tv. I had ordered some Chinese food and was waiting for it to show up. The news caught my eye.
Tonight we learned that New York’s Bachelor Mr. Ryder Dankworth has been shot. Mr. Dankworth, a suspected mob boss was found on the balcony of his suburban home. We know that he has been rushed to the hospital and is in critical condition. There is no news on how the suspect or suspects were able to get past Mr. Dankworth’s security. Or even how they were able to get past his cameras. A source has released this video to us.
I watched as the video showed us Ryder being moved from the ambulance and rushed into the hospital. I knew the minute I saw the video that this was Draco. I also knew that this was his way to reach out to me. His way to tell me that I better come out of hiding before he dose more. My heart hurt and I wanted nothing more than to drop everything and go to Ryder. I needed to know if he was okay or not. I ran to protect him and instead I might have just gotten him killed. Tears fell down my face. I ran into my bedroom and pulled out my burner phone. I called Jason’s cell phone. It rang and rang and then I got his voicemail. I hung up and gave it a minute or two and called him again.
“This is Jason?”
“Danica? It’s not safe for you to call.”
“Please, I need to know.”
“I don’t know yet. He is still in surgery. It doesn’t look good.” Tears poured down my face. “Listen to me, are you okay?”
“Good, stay where you are, and keep yourself hidden. This attack was because of you. If he makes it the last thing he needs to hear is that you’re in danger.”
“I’m calling from a burner. Can I call you back to check on him?”
“Yes, give it a few hours, and whatever you do. Stay away!” I agreed and hung up the phone. Normally I would trash this phone right away, but it was my only connection to Ryder. I started to pace feeling useless. My heart was breaking and if he died I would go to Draco and beg for death. Or I will kill him myself. Why did I leave him? What the hell was the difference now? I’m nothing but a stupid woman. I sat there on the side of my bed for over an hour beating myself up. That’s when I heard a knock on my front door. It was eleven at night and I grabbed the gun from my nightstand and headed towards the front door.
I got to the door and looked out the peek hole. Robby stood there with two other men I had never seen before. What the hell was he doing here? I cracked the door and looked at him. “Robby, what’s going on?” He looked at me.
“I need you to let me in.”
“Who’s with you?”
“Just people you can trust.” I don’t know what made me believe him, but I opened the door and took a step back. All three of them entered. I closed and locked the door behind us. I still had the gun in my hand and Robby looked at it and looked back at me. “I’m not going to beat around the bush. I know who you are and I also know Draco and Ryder.” Before I even thought about it. I pointed my gun at him. “Calm down angel. I’m not here to hurt you. I’m here to help you.”
“And just why the fuck would you do that?”
“Because I’m your friend.” I just eyed him. His other two men pointed their guns at me. Robby just put his hand out and they dropped their guns.
“Who are you?” I asked him.
“Let’s just say, I’m their leader and they do as I say. Danica, you can trust me. I can protect you from Draco and help you with Ryder.”
“Why should I trust you?”
“Because if I didn’t help you Ryder will have me killed. If he finds out I knew where you were and did nothing.” I cocked my head at him. “Look it’s a lot to explain and we really don’t have the time right now. I need you to grab whatever you need and come with me. Please?” I didn’t know what to do. “Danica, I won’t hurt you. My aunt would kill me and trust me, she is more dangerous then Draco and Ryder.” I took a deep breath and seemed to be out of choices. I nodded at him and walked to my bedroom. Robby followed me.
“I need to get dressed.” Robby turned his back. I rolled my eyes and grabbed some sweats out of my dresser. Within ten minutes I had a bag packed and was all ready to go. I sent out a silent prayer. One for Ryder and one for myself. Please don’t let this be a trap. Robby reached out for my hand.
“Your safe with me Danica. I promise you that.” I just sighed and took his hand. The next thing I knew we were at the airport.
“I didn’t even get to say goodbye to your aunt.”
“Don’t worry she knows you’re with me.” I gave him a smile. I just want to be free. The tears fell from my eyes again and Robby pulled me into his chest. “I promise you are safe.” He said softly.
“If this is a trap, I will die.”
“Soon you will realize I’m just protecting you.” The car stopped on the runway and we got out and loaded onto a private jet.
“Where are we going?” I asked as I took a seat and Robby took the seat next to me. There were four other men waiting on the jet. “Who are you?” Robby smiled.
“I’m kind of a gangster.” That was all he said and I just shook my head. Of course, you are. I said to myself.
“Who do you work for?” He laughs.
“Myself, Danica. They answer to me.” Great, I can’t seem to just meet normal people. Normal people with normal jobs. No, I have to be involved with the mafia and gangsters. I yawned and tried to lay back and close my eyes. Then I remember I needed to call Jason back and check on Ryder. I went to my backpack and pulled out the burner phone. Robby grabbed it from my hands.
“What the hell?”
“How long have you had this phone?”
“Not long, besides it’s a burner phone. I need to check on Ryder.” Robby got up and handed the phone to one of his men. The man got off the jet. “Robby?”
“That’s not safe. I will update you on Ryder.” I took a deep breath and closed my eyes again. Either I was safe or I was going back to Draco. I was too tired to care at the moment. My heart hurt too much and all I wanted was to be in Ryder’s arms.
