Chapter 10 - Tonight's Entertainment
Turning to see who was holding onto her wrist in such a crowded place, Scarlett was surprised as she met the warm chocolate brown eyes of a handsome young stranger staring back at her from his seated position beside where she was standing.
His hair was short, black and styled in lose spikes at the top of his head and he had dark stubble forming around his chin and over his top lip. Her eyes moved to see that he was wearing a long-sleeve white dress shirt; his top three buttons were undone and gave him a ‘Greek-god’ like appearance as he smiled up at her from his seat.
“Do you perhaps need somewhere to sit?” he called out to her, releasing her wrist gently as he continued staring at her with a patient smile.
This wasn’t something she normally did, taking a complete stranger up on his offer to sit beside him, but she was in desperate need of a place to park her behind and he didn’t appear to look too frightening.
As she stood there, just staring down at him with her unblinking hazel eyes he gave a small chuckle, showing his dazzling white rows of perfect teeth.
“Hello?” he waved his hand in front of her to pull her out of her apparent daze and she blinked her eyes, blushing with embarrassment.
“Oh… I’m sorry?” she asked him.
“I asked if you would like a place to sit?” he enquired, gesturing down to the empty space in the booth beside him where his black suit jacket currently sat, “This seat’s free…”
“Um, sure.” she replied shyly with a nod, watching him as he then picked up his jacket and stood up beside her, revealing just how tall he actually was.
He practically towered over her, being 6 foot, 4 inches in height. Scarlett was only 6 foot without her heels and she wished she was wearing them right now. As he stood beside her she could smell the intoxicating aroma of the obviously expensive cologne he was wearing mixed with sweat and she shyly manoeuvred herself around him to move into the booth, sliding along the long seat to the end. He moved in to sit beside her and placed his suit jacket down on the other side of the seat before he turned to her with a quick smile.
“I’m Adam, by the way.” he introduced himself with his hand outstretched for her to shake.
She smiled at this kind gesture and reached out to take his hand, shaking it gently.
“Well, Adam by the way…” she joked, “I’m Scarlett.”
“Scarlett…” Adam took a moment to fully appreciate it before adding, “…that’s a pretty name.”
As soon as the compliment had left his mouth, his cheeks began to redden with embarrassment as he nervously pulled his hand free of hers and turned away, focusing instead on his half-eaten meal.
“I’m afraid that I can’t take any credit, it was my parents who named me, after all.” she joked, hoping to help lighten the mood.
Adam grinned at her half-assed attempt before proceeding to devour his oddly similar meal to the one she had ordered. It appeared that he too had ordered a burger with fries with a side of gravy, but instead of Coke he was drinking something clear and free of bubbles; water.
“You’re not drinking?” she asked, having to speak quite loudly to raise her voice over the noise surrounding them.
Glancing up from his meal and turning to face her again with a raised brow, she gestured to his drink and he smiled in response.
“No, I’m afraid that I must remain lucid tonight.” he replied with a smile, “I have a long drive ahead of me tomorrow. Might make it a bit difficult if I’m hung over…”
“I know the feeling…” she commented, leaning back into the chair a little more.
“You as well?” he asked, placing a gravy covered fry into his mouth and chewing.
She nodded her head, “Yeah, just passing through. I’m leaving first thing in the morning.”
As soon as he had swallowed his mouthful he continued.
“Well, it would certainly appear that we came here on the right night of the year.” Adam added, looking around at the chaos unfolding before them.
“What’s the stage for anyway?” she asked, pointing towards it.
He shook his head, “Honestly, I have absolutely no idea-“
Adam’s voice was suddenly cut off as the lights began to dim, changing into an eerie red glow as the patrons surrounding them began cheering and whistling loudly. A pair of men dressed in black clothing moved out onto the stage with a long chrome pole and began installing it into a section in the middle of the stage with a hand drill. It ran down from the ceiling of the pub to the surface of the black wooden stage.
As soon as they were finished they exited the stage and the large black curtains began to part slowly. A man dressed in an old black tuxedo made his way out onto the stage, holding onto a microphone and waving at the crowd who continued cheering and shouting with excitement.
“W…what’s going on?” Scarlett thought aloud.
“Yes, yes, hello everyone and welcome to yet another Sunday night at Porky’s Pub!” he began to speak into the microphone, waving around at the crowd with a cheesy smile plastered across his middle-aged face.
Scarlett’s expression mirrored Adams as the pair simply sat frozen in shock, staring at the man standing opposite them on the stage and waiting for the realisation to sink in. What were they about to witness?
Turning her head to the side to meet Adam’s equally stunned expression, the pair both shrugged at each other before turning back to face the man currently rambling on about tonight’s entertainment.
“We’ve got an exciting line up for you folks tonight. Some of your favourites and even some new recruits! It’s gonna be one hell of a show… so let’s all give a big shout-out-welcome to our special guests… the Ladies of the Night… Ladies and gentlemen…” he paused and the spotlight dimmed as he lowered his voice for effect, “Let the show begin…”
As soon as the announcer exited the stage the music began as what looked like several exotic-looking women dressed in designer lingerie began striding out onto the stage sensually, dancing about to a choreographed routine of grinding against one another and swinging around the pole.
“Oh… my… god…” Adam spoke, his voice barely reaching the volume needed to hear over the shouts and cries of the surrounding people.
Scarlett pursed her lips tightly together giggling underneath her breath at this hilarious twist to her night. With his eyes wide Adam turned to face her, a crimson blush having formed either side of his cheeks as he sat there utterly embarrassed by the current situation he too had fallen unknowingly into.
It took another ten minutes until Scarlett’s meal was delivered to the booth, but as soon as it was she decided to take her meal to go and find somewhere to eat, outside perhaps.
Sensing from the pale expression on his face that her mysterious new acquaintance was well in need of a rescue from this awkward situation as well, she placed her hand on his to gain his attention and then leaned in and spoke into his ear.
“Let’s get out of here.”
She took him by the hand as Adam grabbed his suit jacket and they shuffled out of their shared booth. Scarlett began leading him through the crowd of onlookers hooting and hollering with their phones out filming the stage performers as they continued on with their show.
Bursting out of the Pub’s entrance, Scarlett began laughing hysterically as Adam watched on behind her with his jacket folded over his left arm, shaking his head in embarrassment.
“That was hilarious!” she announced, a tear forming in the corner of her hazel eye from her fit of laughter as she turned back to see him slowly striding across towards her nervously. “Come on, you can’t say you didn’t find that even a little bit funny.”
She bumped into his shoulder with a smile as he let out a big sigh.
“That was by far one of the most awkward moments of my entire life.” he announced, watching as she made her way across to a nearby sitting area and sat down.
“Well, I guess you can tick that one off of your bucket list then.” she joked, opening the paper bag her meal was sitting inside and pulling the burger out.
“Yes, because being surprised in a pub by a strip show is clearly on my bucket list…” he shot back at her with a smirk as he sat down beside her, “…right under number nine on the list; being eaten by a shark.”
She chuckled as she took a big bite of the burger and chewed.
“I think I would have preferred been eaten by the shark honestly.” he admitted, sitting back and placing his leg up onto his knee.
As soon as she swallowed she spoke, “Oh, don’t say that. Then I wouldn’t have had the pleasure of your company, now would I?”
Glancing up at her, he couldn’t help but smile. Scarlett was nothing like any of the women he’d met back home. There was something untamed about her, something that intrigued him as he sat there and watched her devour the burger one bite at a time. She didn’t seem to care that she had tomato sauce on both corners of her mouth as she finished the burger and began snacking on the fries one at a time.
“Seriously… thanks for the rescue, Scarlett.”
Scarlett’s hazel eyes flicked up from her fries to meet his.
“You’re welcome, Adam.” she replied.
