Chapter 17 - The Phone Call
As soon as Adam’s car was out of sight Scarlett went back into her room and had a shower, getting herself ready for her long drive out to see her Aunt Steph and cousins, Haley and Jake. It had been years since she had been out to visit them and she hoped they were home.
Packing her toothbrush into her carry bag she happened to glance down at her recently purchased mobile phone and had a sudden realisation; she should probably call to inform her roommate that she would be gone for the foreseeable future, just for peace of mind’s sake. Scarlett knew that Kate wouldn’t be expecting her to return home to the apartment until today but she needed to inform her of the sudden change of plans.
Her slender fingers began dialling her friend’s mobile number, which she had memorised over the time they had been living together. As soon as she pressed the green ‘call’ button and held it to her ear she took a giant inhale, preparing herself to come up with a vague excuse for her absence. A sick relative perhaps? It seemed believable enough.
Across the city and at that exact moment, Kate was sitting at the kitchen bench of Dimitri’s mansion, having been taken from her apartment and kept as an apparent captive by the Mafia Boss and his henchmen. Kate was hunched over the counter, appearing utterly exhausted as her red eyes slowly blinked open and shut. Both of her hands were cuffed together with a pair of silver metal handcuffs and they sat on top of the bench in front of her as she fought to stay awake in the awkward silence.
Dimitri and his men had been working non-stop all night to call and meet with various contacts in an effort to track down the missing fiancé of the Mafia Boss, now officially on the run. They had received several tips about a bright green lamborghini which had been traded in at a second-hand car sales yard located a fair distance away from the mansion and Marco and Gabriele were currently driving across town to look into it.
Suddenly Kate’s phone which was sitting just beside her on the kitchen bench, began vibrating and ringing loudly causing her and Diego to both turn and face it with mirrored expressions of surprise on each of their faces. Kate turned to face Diego with wide eyes as he quickly marched across to look and see whose name was displayed on the caller’s screen, but it only showed a phone number and his hazel eyes narrowed at this.
“Whose number is that?” he asked her, placing his hand on her shoulder firmly.
“I… I don’t know…” she panicked, flinching from his hold, “I don’t recognise that number.”
Diego had to make a quick decision and he squeezed her shoulder tightly as he spoke next, his tone cautioning her not to do anything foolish.
Nodding her head, Kate fumbled to pick up the vibrating phone and reached out her pointed finger to swipe the green ‘answer’ tab to the side. As she did, she lifted the phone to her ear and spoke softly through her dry mouth into the receiver.
“H…hello? Kate speaking.”
Scarlett let out an auditable sigh as she replied.
“Oh, thank god… I’m not interrupting anything with you and James am I?” she asked, immediately hitting a clearly tender spot for Kate as she began to tear up.
Scarlett frowned, hearing her friend sniffing on the other end of the phone call.
“Kate? Hun, are you alright? What is it?” she interrogated her roommate, now feeling concerned.
With a quick side-glance to the tall blonde man standing over her, Kate knew she would only get to say something short before the call would be ended and she needed to warn her friend about the dangerous men searching for her, including her own fiancé!
“They killed him Scarlett, they’re after you-“ was all she got out before Diego quickly lunged forward and covered her mouth with his large open palm.
Scarlett listened in on her end of the call as her friend struggled against someone else fighting to restrain her in the background. Panicking, Scarlett continued listening as a male voice spoke with warning to her friend who was clearly in distress.
“Now, now… that wasn’t very smart Kate…” the voice warned as Kate whimpered, her voice muffled by his large open palm as Diego held onto her with both of his strong arms.
A tear rolled down her cheek as Scarlett listened to Kate struggling against someone, feeling horrible for being unable to do anything about it.
“Hey, let her go!” she shouted into the phone angrily.
Then she heard the phone being picked up from where it had been dropped on the counter, followed by the sound of breathing coming from the other end of the line. Scarlett hated to admit it, but the breathing sounded all too familiar as she dared to speak her next word.
“K…Kate?” her voice was timid.
The voice that replied was not Kate’s. But she recognised it immediately and her heart sank, sending a chill up the base of her spine.
Her blood ran cold.
“Dimitri?” she whispered in disbelief.
The affect it had on her was exactly as Dimitri had intended as he stood with the phone held to his ear and a devious smirk spread across his face. She instantly froze, unable to say or do anything as she listened to his heavy breathing on the other end of the line. Her terrible fear of this man and what he could do to her returned as Scarlett tried to stop her entire body from trembling uncontrollably.
He spoke again.
“You’ve been a very naughty girl, baby.” his tone was serious now as Scarlett felt an incredible mix of fear and rage flood over her.
“What the hell do you think you’re doing Dimitri?” she demanded angrily, “Let Kate go, right now! This has nothing to do with her.”
“I’m afraid I can’t do that.” he replied dryly, “You see, Kate here is just as worried about you as I am… and I’m sure as her friend you’d hate for anything to happen to her...”
“Is she telling the truth, Dimitri?” Scarlett suddenly changed the subject of their discussion, “Did you kill him, did you kill Kate’s boyfriend?”
“No… I didn’t kill him.” Dimitri answered truthfully, purposely leaving a long pause between adding his next part, “…However, Diego was kind enough to see to that on my behalf.”
“No...” she muttered.
Scarlett suddenly felt nauseous as her eyes widened in horror at what she had just heard. Her fiancé had his henchman murder Kate’s boyfriend and all because she ran away! She felt terrible as she dropped down to sit on the bed in the middle of her motel room, with the phone still held at her ear.
“Why?” she spoke along with a whimper, lowering her head and closing her eyes as the tears began to flood. “Why would you do such a thing? What kind of a monster are you?”
Dimitri’s dark brown eyes narrowed at this particular question as his voice suddenly darkened noticeably.
“Come home Scarlett, or you’ll soon find out.”
With his apparent warning delivered, Dimitri had hung up the phone call and left Scarlett sitting alone on the bed in her motel room, sobbing to herself for the disgusting mess she had gotten herself into. And now she had unknowingly pulled her friend into it as well.
She felt awful.
