CHAPTER NINE

Jake was surprisingly being a real gentleman at dinner. He didn’t put his hands on me once. Which was a huge feat for him. He always seemed to be touching me when he was near me.

“So...” we both started at the same time and then laughed, feeling awkward.

But Jake continued, “You’re okay with being out with me right? I know you were having a secret affair with Asher and... well, with him being my best friend, I just want to make sure you’re cool with this.”

Wow. I wasn’t expecting that. Even though I had no idea what I was expecting.

“Why wouldn’t I be cool with it? Asher and I were just having fun.” Yeah, I was using his words. “Now it’s over with.” I gave him a fake smile and sipped from my drink.

Jake raised his eyebrows and lightly laughed. “Asher is probably going to kick my ass for this.”

“Why? I was never his.” Now if that wasn’t the biggest lie that’s ever come out of my mouth.

“That’s not how he portrayed it to me and Tate. I’ve never seen Asher sleep with a girl more than once and whenever I talked about how hot you are, he lost his cool.” Jake shrugged. “You sure there wasn’t anything besides sex between you two?”

As much as I wished there was, I saw now that there really wasn’t. Yeah, Asher had his sweet moments with me, but he never once made me feel like there was anything more than sex.

“Yeah, I’m sure...”

Our food came out and thankfully ended that conversation.

We started talking about skating and how Asher and him had some scouts coming out next week to watch them skate. He sounded pretty excited about it, which made me excited for them. Having professional scouts come out was huge. They were both amazing skaters and deserved a chance to be seen.

Then my mind drifted elsewhere and I immediately had to ask Jake.

“Sorry to change the subject, but you said Asher has never been with a girl more than once... what about Ellie Parker?” I didn’t know for a fact, but I was pretty sure he had been with her more than a few times. Every girl at the school knew that Asher would inevitably end up with Ellie, so when the two were at the same party or gathering, girls stayed at bay.

Jake laughed and shook his head. “He’s never slept with Ellie. Yeah, they make out a lot and she seems to dig her claws in him, but nah... Asher does surprisingly have standards.” He laughed again. “Believe it or not, but Ellie is pretty cool. That’s why Asher puts up with her shit. And he doesn’t mind that Ellie stakes claim over him, keeps the sluts at bay when he’s not in the mood for a sex-capade.”

I laughed too. Jake used the same terminology I used for Asher’s man-whore nights.

And deep down, I felt better knowing he had never been with Ellie. Now I really did have something rare with Asher Creed. I was the only girl to ever be in his bed more than once. Not that that made a difference. I still hated him.

“So, what do you say we get out of here?” Jake broke my thoughts and I nodded at him with a small smile. When his phone chirped, he pulled it out and looked at it. “Hey, you want to go over to Asher and Harper’s? Sounds like they’re having a little party. Nothing big.”

Did I say yes? No? I wanted to go for my best friend’s sake, but Asher would be there and I wasn’t sure if I could handle being around him again.

“Or, we can go back to my place...” Jake offered.

“We should probably make an appearance right?” I finally replied and he lightly laughed before nodding.

“Yeah, you’re probably right.”

Jake paid the bill and then we were in his car, taking off toward the Creeds. And I had no idea what was going to happen inside that house. My nerves were going crazy.

Once we pulled up, I saw that there was only a few cars there. It really was a small party.

Jake rounded the car and opened the door for me and I smiled up at him as I slipped out of the front seat. He placed his hand on the small of my back as we headed toward the porch.

We let ourselves in and were greeted by Mia, their mom.

“Layla! So glad you could make it!” Then she grinned at Jake, her eyes studying us. “You too, Jake. They’re all downstairs. Let me know if you guys get hungry down there.” Then she disappeared back into the kitchen.

“She’s super hot.” Jake laughed. “Total milf.”

I couldn’t help but laugh with him. Leave it to Jake to say something like that.

We made our way downstairs and saw our friends hanging out in the large living room, sitting on the floor together. Harper was in Tate’s arms, of course, and the others were just chilling, talking, and laughing.

“Yay! They came!” Harper exclaimed.

Asher whipped his head in our direction and it looked like he was relieved to see us here. I wasn’t surprised to see that the sophomore he had on his arms from earlier was still here. I rolled my eyes at him.

“Got anything to drink around here?” I asked as I plopped down next to Harper and Tate, straight across from Asher and his juvenile date.

Harper pointed at Asher. “Hit her up, Ash.”

I looked in his direction as he slowly handed over a bottle of vodka, holding onto it longer than needed when I grabbed a hold of it.

“Vodka? Seriously?” I asked, looking down at the bottle. “This shit is nasty.”

“Yeah, well it’s all we have down here. Mom is upstairs,” Harper replied.

“Yeah, I saw that.” I closed my eyes and took a pull from the bottle, feeling the burn of the vodka go down my throat. “Blah! This is so gross!” I handed it back to Asher as he took a pull himself.

Asher offered it to Jake who took it from him and took a pull. Then Jake handed it back to me and because I knew this would be a long night without a buzz, I took another pull. Actually I took several pulls. When I was done, the buzz roared its ugly head and I felt great.

The bottle was now empty and Harper ripped it from my hands and giggled.

“Anyone up for some spin the bottle?”

I rolled my eyes. “What, are we in junior high, Harper?”

“I’ll play!” This coming from Jake next to me as he nudged me. “Maybe I’ll get that kiss from you tonight after all.”

I laughed and shook my head as Harper begged me to agree.

“Fine.”

Asher’s date annoyingly clapped her hands. “Oh! Me too!” She grabbed Asher’s arm. “Please play.”

“Whatever,” Asher replied dryly, “just spin the fucking thing.”

Harper giggled and went first. She landed on Asher’s date and they leaned forward and kissed. A little too deeply if you ask me.

“Shit dude,” Jake started, “that’s hot.”

“And that’s my sister...” Asher growled, glaring at Jake.

Asher’s date went next and landed on Jake, who basically made out with the girl right in front of me. But whatever. I was already over this game.

It was now Asher’s turn and it landed on Harper. The entire room screamed re-spin and so he did. But this time it landed on me.

Fuck!!

“Nope. Not playing anymore.” I threw my hands up and tried to stand up but Harper held me down.

“It’s just a game, Layla. I won’t hold the rule over your head for a game.” She giggled as she stared at me with a challenge.

I was nervous. I didn’t want to kiss Asher. I knew that if I did, it was going to be bad. If our lips touched, I would totally reveal how I felt about him.

So when I tried to stand up again, I had to lean forward onto my knees but Asher was right there. He grabbed my chin and slammed his lips onto mine.

He kissed me like his life depended on it. When I felt his tongue caress my bottom lip, I opened up for him, our tongues dancing as one. Then I felt my right hand come up and cup his face as I deepened the kiss myself. The entire room disappeared around us as I reveled in this kiss. I needed this kiss.

His familiar taste sent me on overdrive as I let out a small whimper into his mouth, my other hand coming up to rest on his arm that still held my chin.

He broke the kiss with a small nibble on my bottom lip, making a slapping noise when he released it, and we stared into each other’s eyes for a moment.

“Holy shit!” Jake started, “Now that’s a kiss!”

I felt my cheeks blush as I sat back in my spot. Asher’s date glared at me with daggers and when I looked at Harper, she looked at me with suspicious eyes but she didn’t say anything.

When I looked at Asher, he was smiling with his eyes, licking his lips as he sat back himself.

Damn. That kiss made me hot. Mix the vodka and that kiss and I was feeling aroused. My nipples pressed against my bra and made me achy.

“Your turn.” Tate nudged the bottle in my direction.

I was still trying to get my head straight when I grabbed the bottle and spun it.

Landing on Asher.

Are you kidding me?!

“I call for a re-spin!” This coming from Asher’s date.

“Sorry. Rules are rules.” I looked up at Harper who smiled at me. “Go ahead... kiss him.”

And I couldn’t tell if she was upset or testing me. Did I kiss him? Did I give up and walk away?

But then I looked at Asher who had a devilish smile and was already leaning forward.

“It’s just a game, right?” I laughed nervously and leaned forward, lightly kissing Asher’s lips and about to sit back down when Asher pulled me back to him and deepened the kiss once again.

Someone whistled and cat-called so I broke the kiss and sat back, looking over at my best friend.

She had a small grin on her face, but she was still eyeing me suspiciously.

The bottle made it around to each player, and I was thankful that it didn’t land on me again. But Asher’s date went again and this time it actually landed on Asher, and she didn’t hesitate to crawl into his lap and suck face with him.

I couldn’t watch it. I had to look away.

When I did, I saw Harper watching me. I just simply smiled at her and turned my glare back to Asher and his date.

Once the kiss broke, his date stared at me with an evil smile as she took her spot back next to him, and Asher looked at me with guilt.

“I think I should get home,” I started, looking at Jake. “Can you drive me home?”

“Sure.” Jake stood up, holding his hand out to help me up.

“See you guys later,” I said as my eyes scanned the group in front of me. My eyes stopped on Asher’s and I couldn’t tell what his expression was saying. He looked almost bummed that I was leaving. But why would he? Now he could have some alone time with his juvenile date.

They all said goodbye to us as Jake and I went upstairs and out the front door.

Jake drove me home but we didn’t get out yet. I was feeling pretty drunk and my legs didn’t feel strong enough to walk me to the front door.

That’s when Jake leaned over and kissed me.

I wasn’t expecting it at all, but I went with it.

I kissed him back.

And the next thing I knew, he leaned into me as I pressed back into the door. Jake grabbed my legs and stretched them out next to him. He deepened the kiss as his hand caressed up my leg, over my thigh, and made it’s way to my shirt.

He started to unbutton my shirt then and alarm bells started ringing in my head.

Jake was actually a really good kisser, but it didn’t feel right. None of this felt right.

“Jake...” I murmured against his lips, but he just kept kissing me and he had three buttons undone. “Jake!”

I broke the kiss and pushed at his chest. He sat up and looked at me confused.

“What’s wrong?” He was breathless from our kiss.

I sat up farther, bringing my legs back in front of me. “I should go inside now.”

Jake snorted. “Seriously? You tease me all night and now you don’t want to do anything? But you can make out with Asher.” He moved back to the driver’s side and shook his head as he turned his car back on.

“I’m sorry...” I replied shyly. I didn’t know what else to say.

“You can get out now.” Jake was cold and distant and didn’t seem to care that I was upset.

I stayed still for a moment, but when I saw that he wasn’t moving or even looking in my direction, I opened the door and slipped out. I barely had the door shut when he tore away from the curb, his tires screeching.

“Asshole!!” I screamed at his taillights before I made my way up to the front door.

When I went to open the door, it was locked, and I didn’t have my keys.

I started banging on the door but there was no answer. Was Dillon even home? I kept banging, but nothing.

I went around to the back, that door was locked too.

“Fuck!!”

I knew none of the windows were unlocked, so now I found myself locked out of my own house.

I pulled my phone out and dialed Harper but it went straight to voicemail. I kept trying but to no avail.

If I didn’t want to sleep outside I would have to make the long walk back to the Creeds. Even though I didn’t want to go there, what other choice did I have? Call Jake back? No way.

So I started walking.

I finally stepped onto their porch nearing one in the morning and I was exhausted.

The house was dark and I didn’t want to ring or knock and when I tried the handle, it was also locked.

I tried Harper’s phone again and it still went to voicemail. Ugh! Come on!!

My drunken buzz was still in full effect and the only other way I knew how to get into this house was to go knock on Asher’s bedroom window.

When I rounded the house and saw his window, I stopped dead in my tracks. What if that girl was still with him? I couldn’t see that.

His bedroom light was turned on and I seen him walking around all alone and I let out a sigh.

He was alone.

And shirtless... gosh, he is so hot!

I crept up to his window and lightly taped.

I watched him jump and stare at the window and I couldn’t help but let out a small giggle as I waved my hand.

He crawled onto his bed and unlocked and opened the window.

“Stanford? What the hell are you doing outside my window?” He looked and sounded completely confused.

“Sorry. I got locked out of my house and Jake took off. I tried to call Harper but her phone is off.” I crawled through his window as he helped me in. “I didn’t want to wake your parents and figured this was the best way in. Sorry.”

“Stop apologizing,” Asher scolded. “Jake took off on you?”

I felt my cheeks blush. “Yeah. He was... he was getting a bit hands-y and when I pushed him off he got pretty upset with me.” I was still drunk, so I was having no problem dishing all of this to Asher, the last person I should confide in right now. “He was angry that I was teasing him all night and then I turned him down. Then he was mad about the kiss you and I shared, and well... here I am.” I sighed, looking around his room.

“Yeah, he can be an asshole,” Asher replied.

I was still standing on Asher’s messy bed and felt uncomfortable being back in here.

“I’ll just make my way up to Harper’s room now.”

“Yeah, I wouldn’t do that...” Asher replied softly, rubbing the back of his head. “Tate’s over.”

“Ah...” Now I know why she turned her phone off. “Then the guest bedroom next door will have to do.”

That was the last place I wanted to sleep, what with memories of Asher and I in there on our first night together, but it was that or the couch. A big comfy bed sounded much better than a couch.

Asher was acting weird and off as I stepped off the bed. He followed me to his door as he opened it for me but when I turned around to thank him, I saw a pair of heels next to his bed and my heart dropped.

I stared up into his eyes and he looked away guiltily.

“Wow...” I started.

His bathroom door opened and the sophomore from earlier came walking out, only wearing one of Asher’s skateboarding t-shirts.

She stopped dead in her tracks when she saw me. “What the hell is this, Asher?”

Asher groaned. “None of your business.” He turned back to me with a sympathetic look on his face. “I’m...”

But I shook my head. “Don’t bother. Some things never change. Thanks for letting me in.” Then I turned and headed toward the guest bedroom.

Once I shut the door behind me, I let the tears escape and cascade down my cheeks. Why did I have to be in love with a complete douche bag? The guy was obviously a piece of work, yet I’m still pining after him.

I froze when I heard commotion coming from next door.

“Why was she in your bedroom, Asher?”

“That’s none of your fucking business, Lisa. I think you should leave.” Asher sounded annoyed.

“I’m not leaving until I get what I came for.”

My heart pounded in my chest and I held my breath so I could listen to everything being said. What did she come for?

“What the hell do you want, Lisa?” Asher asked.

“Obviously I want you,” she started, “I’ll be the only sophomore to have slept with Asher Creed. And I’m not leaving until I get what I want.”

I heard Asher laugh. “Get the fuck out.”

“Why? So you can go next door and sleep with that snobby blonde bitch?” She paused and I wanted to go over there and smack her stupid. “Is she who you want?”

My eyes got huge and I pressed my ear up to the wall, really wanting to hear that answer.

“Don’t call her that,” Asher scolded. “Seriously, I need you to get the fuck out of my house. And leave my shirt.”

“Fuck you, Asher Creed!”

I heard a bit of commotion and then his door slam. Wow. If his parents weren’t awake before, they definitely would be now.

I tip-toed away from the wall and slowly opened the door so I could go to the guest bathroom.

But when I turned on the light, I nearly screamed when I heard Asher’s voice behind me.

“Hey...”

I swung in a circle and glared at him, my hand on my chest. “Hi...” I replied, breathing heavily.

He gave me a half grin before he said, “I didn’t sleep with her.”

“I gathered that...”

He slowly nodded, studying my face. “You heard?”

I nodded my reply.

“But you were going to... before I knocked... right?”

When he didn’t say anything I just stared at him.

Then he slowly shook his head. “I thought about it for a small fraction of a second earlier this evening, but nah, I wasn’t going to.”

I snorted out a laugh. “How do I not believe that?”

He smiled down at me. “I love your goofy laugh.”

I immediately dropped the smile on my face and glared up at him. “I should get to bed...”

I tried to walk around him, but he wrapped one arm around my waist and pushed me against the door. I let out a surprised yelp as I looked up into his eyes. He was staring down at me intently and I swallowed hard.

“Asher...” I breathed but he crashed his lips onto mine, claiming me, and tasting me.
