CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

~~ADRENA~~

Ouch. That hurt.

Jason’s heavy body was draped over me and felt like a sack of potatoes. My breathing was labored from fighting with him and my adrenaline was at an all-time high. I had no idea what was going to happen before I kneed Karl in the nuts and lunged myself at Jason but...

Wait! Karl!

I shoved Jason from me with a grunt as I scrambled away from him.

“Adrena!” Dash’s voice reminded me I wasn’t alone as I whipped my head in his direction. My hands were violently shaking and my heart thundered in my chest. But, when I looked at him, a new strength built in me that I never knew I had.

“I’m okay,” I breathed out, searching his wild eyes.

That’s when I heard Karl’s groaning as I whipped my head in his direction. He was still curled over while he held his junk. I kneed him hard. All the anger I had for him was released in the force of my knee and there was no doubt that he was hurting.

But when he started to move, my eyes went wide and I knew where he was going. Jason’s gun was lying halfway between us on the floor and I quickly scrambled to get to it first. I was full of anxiety as I crawled towards the gun, needing to get to it before that monster did.

And I grabbed it first.

Karl let out a groan as he fell short. He was still holding his junk as he looked up at me with stormy eyes.

“Adrena, baby, let’s talk...” He held up his other hand to me, trying to calm me.

Did he honestly think that was going to calm me? A part of me just wanted to pull the trigger; watching the bullet go through his hand and eventually into his head.

“Don’t call me that,” I hissed out.

He laughed, leaning back on his knees, as I stood up and pointed the gun at him with shaky hands.

“You don’t want to do this, baby...” Karl said with fear laced in his voice. “Let’s talk, okay?”

“Talk?” I laughed hysterically, shoving the barrel against his temple. “The time for talking is over.”

“Adrena.” I whipped my head back towards Dash as he searched my face with ardor. “Come untie me. Let me take care of this.”

I heard him loud and clear but I just kept staring at him. Tears swam in my eyes and I dug the barrel even harder into his temple. All the memories and emotions from the last five years swarmed me and I couldn’t think about anything or anyone but those memories. I finally looked away from him and right back at Karl.

“Baby, you don’t want to do this. Untie me!” Dash demanded, but I continued to ignore him. I appreciate that he wants to take control and protect me, but this isn’t about him right now; this is about me and the revenge I so deserve.

“Why?” I choked out. “Why did you make me do all those things? You had money all this time and yet you always said we were broke.” I was shaking so badly that I was having a hard time keeping the gun steady against his temple.

That’s when memories of random men touching me; doing nasty things to me, came flooding into my mind. Tears streamed down my face as I stared at this monster here in front of me. He made me do those things. He made me think nobody could love me.

“Why?!” I screamed at the top of my lungs. I needed answers and I needed them now.

Karl let out a small laugh as he stared up into my face with no emotion in his features. He wasn’t saying a word though, which was only pissing me off even more.

“Did you even love me?” Why did I ask that? Of course he never loved me. If he had loved me, he wouldn’t have allowed those horrible things to happen to me; he wouldn’t have put me in those situations.

He laughed but finally nodded his head. “I loved you once upon a time. But only for a moment. Other than that, you meant nothing to me. You became a warm body to share my bed with and do what I needed you to do so I could make money.”

Rage filled me at his words as I dug the barrel harder into his temple, causing his head to tilt to the side. I wasted five years of my life with this bastard; five years I would never get back. He made me do unspeakable things and I was stupid enough to think that he loved me, cared about me; even if it was just a tiny bit.

I was so lost when he found me and I was too blind to see who he really was. I wish I never met him; never knew him. If I hadn’t met him, how would my life look?

“Babe...” I whipped my head towards Dash as he stared at me. “Listen to me right now. He doesn’t mean a fucking thing. What he did in the past is just that. I’m here now and I’m never going to put you through what this piece of shit has. But, if you kill him, you’ll have to live with that for the rest of your life. Baby, come untie me. Let me kill him.”

A small whimper escaped my lips as I stared at him. This man, Dash McCarthy, was the best man I’ve ever met and he was who I should focus on right now. But I quickly whipped my head back towards Karl, rage filling me once again.

I wanted nothing more than to put this led in his brains but I was holding back. Dash might be right: That I’d regret it. But, what if I regret not shooting him?

My finger tightened on the trigger as my tears came harder. Karl Deckert was never going to have the chance to come after me again.

But then the front door was kicked open and we were swarmed by a dozen men in swat uniforms, their guns pinted at all of us.

“Freeze! Put your weapon down and hold your hands up!”

I immediately dropped the gun and held my hands up. Now my heart was thundering in my chest for other reasons. I had just been caught holding a gun up to Karl’s head. It obviously looked bad from their persepctive. Great.

One of the men came towards me while the others held their guns steady. He grabbed my arms and forcefully pulled them behind my back before slamming me face first onto the floor. His knee was in my back and I cried out in pain.

“Thank God,” Karl beamed. “This bitch is crazy!”

“Officer! She was defending herself! She was defending us! She’s innocent!” Dane’s voice echoed around me but all I could think about was Dash.

I couldn’t see much with my face pressed into the rug but I saw a set of boots walk up in front of Karl.

“Karl Deckert, you have the right to remain silent. Anything you say will be held against you in a court of law...”

“What?!” Karl barked out. “Are you seriously arresting me? They held me captive! She had a fucking gun against my head!”

I waited for the officer who had his knee in my back to read me my miranda rights but it never came. I could hear the cuffs being placed on Karl and saw him being dragged from the living room out the corner of my eyes before he disappeared completely.

“The weapon has been secured, sir.” The officer took his knee out of my back and helped me to a sitting position. Then he stood back as another officer, a man who looked like he was in charge, stepped in front of me.

“You must be Adrena Ace. I’m detective Bryan. We’ve been hot on Karl Deckert’s trail for several weeks now. I’m sorry you had to endure this and I want you to know that he will never bother you again. If I have it my way, Karl Deckert will rot in a cell until he dies.”

I swallowed, not knowing what to say. Then I felt strong arms around me as Dash’s scent invaded my senses. And it was enough to make me crumble in his embrace. I burried my face into his neck and sobbed out. Everything from the day came crashing down around me and I couldn’t control my emotions.

“Shh, baby, I’ve got you.” Dash held me tightly to him, his face buried into my hair.

“We’ll need a statement from each of you,” the officer said from behind me but I kept my face buried into Dash. I needed his strength right now.

“May I ask how you knew he was here?” Dane asked.

“A young man made a distraught call that two men held the McCarthy brothers and a woman at gunpoint. We knew Adrena was staying with the McCarthy’s so we came as soon as we could, knowing it was Karl Deckert; knowing we finally had that scumbag.”

A young man?

Then it hit me that the kid who dropped off the envelope was the young man. I had completely forgotten about him and honestly don’t remember when he snuck off. He was good at disappearing without being noticed because neither Jason nor Karl realized he was gone too. And I’ve never felt more grateful for anyone in my entire life. When I find that kid, I’m going to hug him so tight.

“Thank you, officer,” Dash rumbled out, the vibration in his chest consuming me.

~~DASH~~

The officers were cleaning up the scene around us as I held Adrena next to me on the couch. Dane was pacing back and forth, looking around madly, and making me nervous.

“Dane, sit down,” I growled out.

He looked at me and then finally took a seat.

They pronounced Jason’s death as his body was put into a black body bag while men with the word “CORONER” stretched across their backs carried his lifeless body out.

Pride swelled in my chest as I remembered how Adrena took control of the scene. I could kick her ass for putting herself in danger, but she clearly handled herself just fine. If it had gone any other way, I would be the one in the back of the squad car right now because I would go on a murdering rampage. If anything had happened to Adrena I wasn’t sure if I was going to be able to handle it. But she’s still here with me and that’s all that matters. And that scumbag is never going to come near her ever again. I’ll make sure of it.

Another officer was walking by us when I saw Adrena reach out to him.

“My cousin Kristina. He took her, filleted her like a fish...” Her voice was weak as she trailed out, trying to catch her breath. “Has anyone found her?”

The officer looked confused and didn’t say a word but the man in charge came back over to us.

“Kristina Ace was found a few days ago. She’s fine, ma’am. She will actually be released from the hospital today. She is fine.”

I felt and heard Adrena release a breath of relief at his words and I can honestly say I let my own breath go as well. That was good news; the best news we’ve heard all day. Well, besides Karl’s arrest of course.

“We won’t be much longer and then we’ll be out of here.” The officers walked away then, leaving us alone.

A pair of officers had already taken our statements and now we were just waiting for them to finish cleaning up so they could leave. It’s been a long, taxing day, but I couldn’t help but feel a bit aroused. Watching my woman take charge like that and hold her own, did something to me. And when I saw how Dane looked at her, I knew he was feeling the same way.

Dane came over then and took a seat on the other side of Adrena, rubbing her back. “How are you doing, babe?” He asked her in a soft voice.

She nodded and looked over at him. “I’m great, actually.” She looked towards me then, a gleam filling her eyes. “I’m so great.”

I let out a small chuckle. Only this girl would be great after killing someone and then being shoved to the ground by an officer. God, I love this woman. I squeezed her tightly to my side and kissed the top of her head.

The man in charge came back in and looked between the three of us. “Alright, we’re all finished here.” He pulled a card from his pocket and handed it to me. “We’ll be in touch regarding Karl Deckert’s conviction. We have your statements but we might need Ms. Ace to be on the stand as an eye witness to his crimes.”

I nodded, taking the card from his extended hand. “Thank you, sir.”

He gave me one nod before leaving. The entire house was now empty from all the officers leaving and it was eerily quiet but still peaceful.

“I could use a stiff drink. What about you guys?” Dane stood up and headed towards the kitchen.

“Got any whiskey?” Adrena asked, standing up to follow him and it was then that my heart swelled for this woman even more. So she was a whiskey drinker like me, huh? Fuck, that was making my dick stir in my jeans. What the hell is wrong with me? I’m thinking dirty thoughts after such a taxing day? Seriously?

I stood up and went to them in the kitchen. Dane was digging around in the booze cabinet while Adrena leaned against the counter. My dick stirred even more at the sight of her. She was so damn gorgeous and she was all mine.

But then my eyes traveled to Dane as he was watching Adrena in much the same way that I had just been. He was aroused by her too, I could see it written all over his face. A part of me was jealous but then I pushed that feeling deep down. I knew who she loved.

“Here,” Dane rasped out, handing her a shot of whiskey before handing me one as well.

I slammed the liquor down, feeling it burn all the way down, but damn did it feel good. I definitely needed this.

Dane poured us all another shot as we drank in silence. But the look Dane gave me was one I knew all too well. It was the look he gave me when he was ready to share a woman with me; the same look he gave me when I first found them making out in her apartment. Did I want to share her? No. No, I didn’t. But I can’t lie and say the thought of it didn’t turn me on. We had all just been through something that could have gone so much worse. And I knew Dane loved her, it was obvious, but I loved her more.

I cocked an eyebrow at him, letting him know I was on board for one last share, but only if she was.

Dane took that as an invitation while he stepped up to Adrena and slid a strand of her perfect brunette hair behind her ear. “You did so great today. I’m so proud of you.”

I waited to see if she was going to shut him down but when she didn’t, I was surprised. Did she want this, too?

She looked over at me with hooded eyes and I knew that she wanted us. She wanted us to take her. My dick stirred in my jeans at the anticipation of what was to come as my dick became harder and harder with each breath.

I’m going to hell, aren’t I?
