I turned and saw Georgia smirking at me.
"I was just looking around."
I sighed and picked up my kindle. We were sunbathing at the main pool of the resort. James was sitting across from us with Graham, surrounded by three bikini-clad girls.
"I'm sure that blonde stroked his arm."
I slammed my kindle down.
"I know what you're trying to do, and it won't work!"
It was a complete lie, but the last thing I needed was Georgia interfering. I had no right to get possessive over James. I'd made it clear I wasn't interested in anything serious with him, although that was a massive lie.
"Well, if I had to see girls all over Richard, I'd lose it." She said, lowering her sunglasses to look at me.
I rubbed my forehead.
"That's different, you're engaged. James is a guy I'm having sex with. He can do whatever he wants."
The sound of laughter caught both of our attention. My whole body tensed when I saw a blonde girl perched on James's sun lounger, her hand on his thigh.
"Told you so..." Georgia said, clocking my tension.
Before I could respond, a tall guy with black hair was stood over us. His bare chest was wet, the water glistening in the sun.
"Thought I'd come and say hello." He grinned.
Georgia squealed and leapt up to hug him.
"Tom! It's good to see you again."
"Likewise. I thought I'd spend a few nights here before heading back to London."
I smiled when he looked at me.
"Who is your beautiful friend? I would have remembered meeting you."
My cheeks flushed as I looked away from him, suddenly feeling self-conscious.
"This is my best friend, Sophie. She's visiting from New York for a few weeks. Sophie, this is Tom. We met in Greece. He knows Richard and James."
Tom bent down and shook my hand. Georgia winked as she sat down on her sun lounger.
"Why don't you join us?" She said, moving so Tom could sit next to her.
He nodded and sat down, although his eyes didn't leave mine. I glanced over to James. He'd noticed Tom sitting down with us, and he didn't look pleased.
Anger flared up when I saw the blonde now had both her hands on James.
"So, how do you like Ibiza?" Tom asked, looking right at me.
"I love it. It's such a beautiful island."
He looked at me in surprise,
"Ah, your English?"
"I moved to New York a few years ago."
"Mmm, lucky New York."
Georgia elbowed him as I blushed. I felt James's presence before he appeared. The next thing I knew, his arms were hoisting me up, so he was sitting behind me.
"I thought I'd come and say hello. How are you Tom?"He asked, wrapping his arms around my waist.
Tom looked taken aback, but he recovered quickly.
"Good mate. Just getting a last bit of the sun before I head home. Making the most of it, you know."
I felt James nod as his fingers stroked my skin. I was speechless. It was ok for him to have girls crawling all over him, but he wouldn't let me even talk to another man.
"Sounds good. Well, as long as you know you won't be making the most of Sophie. She's mine."He warned.
"I'm not yours!"I exclaimed, turning to face him.
He rolled his eyes,
"I beg to differ. You were last night, when you were screaming my name in bed."
It felt like my cheeks were on fire. Georgia leapt up, an amused smile on her face.
"Come on, Tom. Why don't we go and a get a drink?"
I felt so embarrassed I couldn't even look at him.
"See you later!"James sang, waving at them.
Once they'd left, I tried to pull his arms off me, but he wouldn't let go.
"Come on, Soph..." he muttered, his eyes pleading with mine.
I shook my head,
"You've gone too far! Why did you have to embarrass me like that? Tom was only talking to me."
"I told you how it made me feel seeing you with other guys. Also, Tom and I have exactly the same taste in women. I wanted to make sure he knew you were off limits."
I scowled at him.
"I've had to sit here and watch some blonde girl running her hands all over you. Should I warn off any girl who shows an interest in you?"
"That would be a full-time job, but I wouldn't complain. It would be really fucking hot if you got all possessive."
I folded my arms,
"You can do whatever you want. I'm not stopping you. We aren't a couple, and I'll be gone soon."
I hated myself for even saying it, knowing that nothing was further from the truth. My feelings for him were growing every day.
James leant down so his mouth covered my ear.
"I'm going to pretend you didn't say that."
I felt a shiver down my spine, my pulse quickening. I twisted my head so I could see him and his eyes burnt into mine.
"It's the truth, James. Don't miss out on someone else because of me. I meant what I said about this not being anything serious."
He stared at me, confusion and hurt all over his face. I hated myself for even saying those things, but it was the reality of the situation. My feelings for him didn't change the facts.
James unwrapped his arms from around me and I immediately felt a chill. He went to stand, and I couldn't do it. I couldn't let him walk away and think I didn't want him.
I grabbed his wrist, and he froze.
"I'm sorry, I didn't mean it. Don't go."
I didn't know how to explain myself, but thankfully he didn't ask me to.
He sat back down, and I turned so I could cuddle into him.
I pressed my face into his chest. I could smell his sun cream mingled with aftershave. The scent enveloped me, making me feel safe. Everything about him made me feel that way. It was almost too perfect to be real.
After a couple of minutes, he finally spoke.
"I like you a lot, Sophie. I have zero interests in other women. Actually, I don't intend to get with anyone else at all. Even if you tell me I can!"
My whole body relaxed. The relief I felt at hearing him say that was embarrassing.
I cleared my throat before speaking, trying to appear nonchalant.
"Ok, well that's cool. If you change your mind, just talk to me first, ok?"
He tilted my chin, so we were looking at each other. I could see his amusement as he searched my face.
"Do you know how many women would kill for me to say that to them? I can't work you out, and it's driving me mad."
His voice trailed off as he stared at me.
Before I knew it, his mouth had been on mine as he kissed me. It was a dominating kiss, full of emotion. When we finally broke apart, I was clutching him tightly, consumed by desire. He took a few deep breaths before resting his forehead against mine.
"I like a challenge, and I'm not giving up on you, Soph. I'll win you over, eventually."
I closed my eyes as he planted a trail of kisses down the side of my face. The truth was that he had already won me over, and I didn't have a clue what to do about it.
