“He what?!” Gianni screams through the phone and I have to pull it away from my now ringing ear.

“Yes,” I reply. “And then he just left me there high and dry.”

“Girl, it sounds like you were anything but ‘dry,’” she snickers. “So, what are you going to do?”

“I already texted him,” I sigh. “I don’t know if I seem thirsty or not, but I don’t even care. The man is making it impossible to resist him.”

“It would only be ‘thirsty’ if he didn’t want you so damn bad too.”

“Yeah, yeah…”

“So, are you gonna thank me for making you pack those extra clothes? I knew that you two would see each other again with the way that man was pursuing you when he was here. There was no way he was gonna let go of you that easily.”

“Well, it seemed like he did let go because he was saying that I was the one who reject him and he had respected the decision. Then, when he saw me, he said he realized it was ‘something else’. I don’t understand how that man already seems to pick up on something like that from me. I thought I was putting on a decent façade.”

“Of course he saw right through it, girl. That man is really into you and it was obvious even when he was here that he is super attentive… So, where is he taking you? Other than his house or your hotel room, I mean. Because he most definitely better be taking you one of those places after what he did this morning.”

“We’re going on a tour of the Union Square area and then to Chinatown where he said we’re having ‘real’ Chinese food.”

“Oh shit, he’s has it all planned out already. That man is a unicorn, girl. He is so on it.”

“Whatever, it’s just a date. And then we’ll finish what he started this morning.”

“Don’t act all nonchalant. Remember who you’re talking to — I know you’re excited.”

“I am,” I admit. Butterflies are in my stomach and I’m shaking with nerves. The truth is that I really like Sebastien and I’m down right giddy to see him tonight. But that same excitement also terrifies me because it’s a sign that I already have feelings for him.

“Exactly! And can you do me a favor, Mimi?”

“What is it?”

“Try going with the flow for once in your life.”

“What do you mean?”

“Well, you like spending time with Sebastien, right?”

“Right.”

“And the two of you have a lot of chemistry, right?”

“Right.”

“And you’re deeply attracted to him, right?”

“Right.”

“Does any of that sound bad to you?”

“No.”

“Exactly! So why are you running away or putting your guard up like something bad or wrong is happening between you two? Have there been any red flags?”

“Other than the fact that he seems too good to be true? Isn’t that red flag enough?”

“Only if you think you don’t deserve someone good.”

“It’s not that, Gi—“

“So enjoy yourself!” she interrupts. “Go have fun with Sebastien and don’t get too much into your head! Just see what happens when you allow yourself to enjoy things without waiting for the other shoe to drop, okay? Can you do that for me? For yourself?”

“I don’t know…”

“Please, Mimi! Just try it. If it doesn’t work out… I don’t know, I’ll pay rent for the rest of our lease and you can be mad at me or something.”

I let out a small chuckle and then hesitate for several moments as I consider her words. What I feel for Sebastien and how quickly it came along scare the fuck out of me and I’m not really sure how to deal with that fear. At the same time, I don’t want to let that fear continue to keep me from enjoying myself because I really did enjoy every minute that I spent with him while he was in Atlanta.

“Fine…” I finally reply and I am met with yet another squeal in my ear.

“Yes!” Gianni chimes. “And since you’ll be doing a lot of walking, forget the dress I put in your suitcase. Wear that purple top I packed you with those jeans I picked out.”

When I left Naomi in that conference room this morning, I did feel tinge of guilt, but I’d be lying if I said I didn’t also feel slightly accomplished… Especially considering she texted me agreeing to go out with me just a few hours later.

I’ll show her around the Union Square and Chinatown areas before we end our night with a proper Chinese dinner. It’s one of the many dates I had planned out for her before I even left Atlanta more than a month ago.

A smile naturally grows on my face when I see Naomi walk out the door of the hotel where she’s staying and my heart flutters when she smiles at me too. I walk over to greet her with a kiss on the cheek before leading her to the car and opening the door for her.

“So, how was the rest of your day today?” I question as I get in and start the car.

Naomi lightly scoffs and I can see from my peripherals that she is shaking her head. “It was fine,” she replies curtly. “And yours?”

“It was great! I just had a few meetings before our date. Which reminds me, how did that meeting after ours go?”

“Oh, you’re funny, Mr. Laur—“ she catches herself before agitation hits me. “Sebastien… Honestly, I was a bit distracted.”

“Distracted by what?” I ask casually.

“What do you think distracted me?”

“I haven’t the slightest idea,” I counter. “Could you explain it to me? Make sure to give plenty of detail, as vivid as possible, please.”

“You are something,” Naomi giggles. “Cool and calm gentleman one minute and the next making out with me in a conference room before edging me and then threatening to spank me… Interesting.”

“Dear…” I pull her hand to my lips and kiss her knuckles. “I am always a gentleman.”

“Mhmm,” she hums skeptically. Naomi seems oddly calm and the banter between us feels natural. I was afraid that the stunt I pulled this morning would make her a bit uneasy this evening and I would have to go out of my way to make her more comfortable, but in this moment, she’s the same Naomi she was when we said our goodbyes at the airport.

“So, about you being distracted… Would you like to expand on that?”

“Are you asking me to talk dirty to you, Sebastien?” she teases. “And before we even start our date at that.”

“Ah,” I nod. “You admit that your thoughts were dirty.”

“Whatever,” she scoffs playfully. “Let’s just get on with it.”

I’m glad I followed Gianni’s advice to just enjoy my time with Sebastien. It’s been a wonderful night and I haven’t been this cheerful since I was last with him in Atlanta. We’ve just finished dinner and we’re walking back to his car with our hands clasped together — something he insisted on when we started this date in Union Square, though I have periodically broken away when people appear to recognize him in the street.

And now I’m reluctantly pulling away once again just when we reach the outside of the parking garage because this seemingly eager man is walking up to us with his eyes intent on Sebastien.

“Mr. Laurent! Sebastien Laurent! Is that you? As in the Sebastien Laurent?” he asks with excitement when he reaches the two of us.

“Yes,” Sebastien responds curtly. I look up at him and see that he is visibly agitated, but that is clearly going over the stranger’s head.

“I’d like to pitch this idea to you that I really think you’d be interested in,” the stranger beams. “My name is—“

“As you can see, I’m busy,” Sebastien interrupts and the man’s eyes dart over to me.

“Oh!” He exclaims. “I’m sorry… Wait! You’re the woman who interviewed him.” He looks between the two of us curiously. “Are you two on a da—“

“I’m doing a follow up interview with Mr. Laurent,” I say with a warm smile. To be fair, I’m not exactly lying considering I will be doing a follow up interview with Sebastien. I just can’t have this guy know that we’re on a date because I don’t need my credibility as a journalist questioned. There’s also the fact that Sebastien’s public profile has skyrocketed and I really don’t want whatever is going on between the two of us to be widely known.

“I’d be happy to hear your pitch, but you will need to do so through the proper channels,” Sebastien utters impatiently. “Please reach out to my assistant to schedule something. His name and email are listed clearly on my website.”

“Oh, I see… I’m sorry that I interrupted,” he cringes before backing away. “I look forward to reading or seeing the interview when it comes out and I will contact your people, Mr. Laurent.”

Sebastien immediately takes my hand again as we walk over to his car and once we’re inside, he turns and gives me a curious look.

“What is it?” I ask.

“You know exactly what it is. Every time someone looked at us for too long this evening, you’d let go of my hand and just now, you lied about being on a date with me and you referred to me as ‘Mr. Laurent.’”

“Sebastien,” I sigh. “It’s not like that. As the journalist who conducted your breakout interview, how would it look if the public — including my bosses — knew you and I were on a date? What do you think that would do to my reputation as a journalist?”

“You make a fair point,” he admits. “But I did warn you just this morning about calling me ‘Mr. Laurent,’ did I not?”

“In my defense, I think I should get a free pass considering the scenario.”

“I’ll think about it,” he replies before turning his attention back forward and starting the car. The date otherwise went well and we spend the trip back to my hotel with Sebastien giving me a history lesson on San Francisco and even plan our next date. Given that he’s a movie buff, we decide to do a movie night at his house this weekend and binge old horror flicks.

Honestly, I’m already excited about it and hate that it’s only Monday. Spending this evening with Sebastien only further reminded me how much I enjoy being around him.

When we arrive at my hotel, he walks me up to my room and I am so ready for him to finish what he started this morning. As soon as the door closes behind us, he has me against the wall with his lips conquering mine just as they did this morning. The more agressive he gets, the more flashbacks I have to that weekend we spent together in his hotel room and my core dampens.

Suddenly, he turns me around so that I’m facing the wall and he presses his body against mine. I feel his erection against my ass as his hands wander over my form and he places kisses against my neck. With one hand grabbing my breast, Sebastien uses the other to unbutton my jeans and then slips his hand down my pants. I release a light moan when his finger rubs against my soaking slit and as he continues to move, I realize that my hips are moving with him.

“So wet,” he mutters before slipping a finger inside me. “Do you want me, Naomi?’

“Yes,” I breathe and with that, he removes his finger and turns me around to face him again. When I reach out to start unbuttoning his shirt, he stops me and pins my hands above my head as he leans back in and his lips are on my neck.

Between kisses along my neck, he whispers to me. “That’s good… to know, dear… the feeling… is mutual.” He then abruptly takes a deep breath and pulls away from me, releasing my hands, stepping back, and straightening his shirt up.

“So, I’ll see you this weekend for our movie marathon?” he questions nonchalantly.

“Wh-what?” I gasp.

“This weekend. For our date. I’ll see you?” He says it as if he didn’t just have his hands down my pants and his mouth on my neck.

I’m sure the bewilderment is clear in my face. “What are you— you just— What just happened?!”

“Oh that? Sorry, my self-control may have faltered a bit. We’re not having sex tonight… nor are we this weekend.”

“What? But you—“

“Touched you? Again, I’m sorry about that. You just do something to me,” he smirks.

“We’re not having sex?”

“No, we are not. As much as I want to be inside of you or bury my face between your thighs again, I also feel like I need to make it undoubtedly clear that I want more than just sex from you, Naomi Monroe. So, I think it would make sense to just remove sex from the equation as we continue to see each other until you’re sure of just how much I want you.”

“So you’re going to play these games with me like you did this morning and just now?”

“No, it’s not like that.” He holds my face and lifts my head to meet his eyes. “Like I said, you do something to me and I’ve had a few moments of weakness today.”

“Okay, but I now understand that you’re not in it just for the sex, so…”

“The answer is still no. I also need you to understand just how much I want more than sex from you and that will require that we abstain. It gets rid of that point of contention.” He pecks my forehead and then steps away again and starts toward the door while I’m frozen in place gawking just as I was this morning in that conference room.

“I’ll see you this weekend, Naomi Monroe.”
