Chapter 17 No Reason

Persephone was sitting on the edge of the queen-sized bed when she heard a knock on the door. She got up from the bed and walked to the door. She opened the door and saw someone she never imagined to be standing in front of her door.

Charles stepped inside the bedroom and closed the bedroom door. He stepped closer to Persephone and she backed away. She started turning to the side, ending up standing against the wall. Charles placed his hands on the wall, leaving her no route of scaping.

“What are you doing?” She asked. “Do you not remember or are you an idiot?”

“Why should I remember you? I just met you.”

“So, you are an idiot.” After a pause, he added, “this is not the first time we meet.” Persephone knitted her eyebrows. He placed his right hand under her chin and leaned close to her ear. “Should I help you remember?”

“What are you saying? Are you talking about the time we met at the mall?” Persephone glanced at the toddler sleeping on the bed. She looked at Charles and said, “you are going to wake him up. Please, leave.” Charles glanced at the little boy on the boy then he met eyes with Persephone again. He slowly placed his arms by his sides as he said, “good night.” He opened the door and stepped out of the bedroom.

“What the hell was that just now?” Persephone sat on the edge of the bed, pondering at her memory, trying to remember when and where she met him. “What did he mean by those words?”

After Caroline got the twins ready for bed and read them a book to get them to fall asleep, she asked Elizabeth into her bedroom. They were sitting out on the balcony. The cold night breeze rubbing against their face and the moonlight shined in front of them. Caroline took out her cellphone from her pocket and opened her gallery. She looked at the picture she just took of Charles and Achilles.

Caroline showed the picture to Elizabeth and said, “don’t you think they look a bit alike?”

“I was going to tell you the same thing.” Caroline zoomed in on the picture and said, “look at their eyebrows.”

“Look at their nose, it is very identical. As well as their lips.” Caroline looked at Elizabeth and asked, “do you think this is pure coincidence?”

“Probably. If not, they would have said something.”

“You’re right, but it is scary how much they look alike... do you think Persephone also noticed their similarities?” Elizabeth nodded. “She is Achilles’ mother. Has she told you who his father is?” Caroline shook her head. “She said she can’t remember.” Elizabeth let out a sigh. “Poor girl.”

The next day, Caroline was woken up by the sound of the alarm, as usual. She put on the matching sport set designed by her company and went to the kitchen where she found Taekyung with two bottles in his hand. He handed one bottle to Caroline and said, “you are late today.”

“I know,” Caroline spoke, “I was choosing an outfit.”

“It’s alright... Let’s go.” As usual, Taekyung finished the pre-workout and made his way to the door as Caroline followed behind him. The chauffeur had Taekyung’s supercar ready for them. They got in the car and Taekyung sped away.

On their way to C&K Fitness, Taekyung sped through the highway, passing by cars as always. “Hey, little lady.” Caroline shifted her gaze from the window to the man next to her. “What is it?”

“Has Mark ever been in a relationship before?” Caroline gave him a skeptical look before answering. “No, not that I know of. Why?”

“No reason.”

“No reason?”

“Yeah, no reason.” Caroline knitted her eyebrows but decided to drop the subject. She knew she Taekyung would not tell her anything, not even if she asked for the remaining of the ride or even the entire day.

When they got back to the mansion, Caroline prepared the strawberry protein shakes. Before she handed the glass to Taekyung she said, “so, are you going to tell me why you asked about my brother?”

“No reason.” Caroline let out a sigh. She handed him the protein shake and he took a sip. She looked at him and continued to wonder why he asked. “What are you doing next week?” She asked. “I’m flying to Seoul. There are some things I have to do there. Why?”

“No reason.” Taekyung raised his eyebrow. “What?” She asked. “Nothing.”

After taking a shower, Caroline got dressed and went to the twins’ bedroom. She woke them up and got them ready for school. Louisa helped her dress the twins in their uniforms. Then, they went to the breakfast room where the table was already set. They sat on their chairs and waited for Persephone and Achilles.

Persephone looked at Caroline and asked, “you’re not going to work today?”

“No, I will stay here today.” Caroline looked at the watch on her wrist and added, “my masseuse should be coming in an hour. I will spend the rest of the day getting ready for the event tonight.”

“Is that event really that important?” Charles asked. “Of course. It’s for charity,” Caroline answered. “And for good publicity,” Taekyung added. “That, too.”

After having breakfast, Caroline and Persephone were saying goodbye to the kids before sending them off to school when Charles wandered around the foyer. “Aren’t they too young to be wearing uniforms?” He asked. “They go to a very prestigious school, so they have to wear their uniforms. Plus, they look adorable in their little ties and cardigans.”

“And Mia looks very cute in her plaid skirt,” Persephone added. Caroline reached over and hugged the twins once more. “Alright, goodbye, my little angels. Be good.”

“Goodbye, mommy.” Caroline gave them a kiss goodbye on their forehead and let them go with the nanny. Persephone did the same before grabbing her designer purse from the nearby table. She stepped closer to Caroline and gave her a hug. “I am leaving for work now.”

“Okay,” Carline responded. Persephone pressed a peck on Caroline’s lips before leaving. Once Persephone left the mansion, Caroline looked to the side where she found Charles taken aback by what he had just witnessed. “Did you just kiss your friend?”

“It wasn’t a kiss; it was a peck. There is a difference,” Caroline explained. She walked towards him. She stood beside him and opened her mouth. She was going to say something, but the words did not come out, so she just continued walking.

When it was lunchtime, Persephone went to the mansion to have lunch. She looked around the empty living room and wondered where everyone else was. She stepped out to the pool area where she found Charles sunbathing by the pool.

Persephone stared at him for a while. She watched how his muscular chest rose every time he would breathe in. Her eye hovered over his muscular body as she bit her bottom lip. She counted his abs with her gaze as she continued to linger on his body. Charles felt someone’s eyes fixed on him. He looked to his left and took off his dark sunglasses.

“Like what you see?” He asked with a hint of cockiness in his tone. Persephone flinched when she saw him turn to look at her. “Weren’t you sleeping?” She asked while blushing a bit. He stood up from the outdoor lounge chair and stepped closer to her. “I was, but you woke me up by gawking. So, are you going to take responsibility for waking me up?”

“I wasn’t gawking. I was just... enjoying the view.” Persephone paused midway through her sentence and smirked before continuing. “How about this, blondie? You and me, this Friday-.”

“Are you asking me out on a date? Because the answer is no.”

“Why not?” Persephone chuckled and responded, “did you really think I would agree that easily? It offends me that you think I am that easy.”

“Really?” Persephone raised her eyebrow and responded, “yes, really.” He stepped closer to her and blurted out, “we’ll see about that.” Persephone scoffed. She opened her mouth about to insult him, but there were so many insults she wanted to tell him that the words did not come out. He raised his eyebrow, waiting for her to say something. She said nothing and turned around.

Persephone walked back into the mansion where she found Caroline on the phone with her assistant and some documents in her hand. “Joseph, coño! I take the day off and this happens. Tell them that if this is not fixed by the next hour, they are fired... I do not care who they are fire them if you need to.” Caroline’s voice faded away as she walked to her study.

Persephone stood in the living room watching Caroline walk away as Elizabeth entered the mansion dressed in sports clothes and a white cap on her head. She walked closer to Persephone and greeted her. “Did you just get here?”

“Yes,” Elizabeth responded, “I was playing golf at the club.” Elizabeth looked around and said, “is everyone here? I will tell the maids to set the table.”

“Mark and Taekyung are missing.”

“Mark is in the university right now and Taekyung should be here any minute.” Elizabeth went to the kitchen where she ordered the maids to set the table and gather everyone.

Sitting at the dining table, Caroline looked around and said, “are you sure you guys don’t want to accompany me tonight?” Persephone responded, “I have to work.” Caroline looked at Taekyung and he said, “you know those gatherings are not really my thing.” Caroline faced Elizabeth and asked, “what about Mark?”

“He is going to be in the university late today,” Elizabeth replied. “What about you, mom?”

“I am also busy tonight.”

“Of course, and judging by the outfit you are wearing, you enjoyed yourself while playing golf today.”

“Why don’t you just invite one of your many admirers?” Charles asked. “Because it would be too much of a headache taking care of the media and their gossips.”

“I haven’t been seen with a man in the last four years, except for Taekyung. Getting rid of the gossips was already a pain. I just don’t feel like adding onto my workload.”

“That makes sense,” Persephone pointed out.

After having lunch, Caroline returned to her study. She sat on the chair and resumed her work. She spent the rest of the day working. She finished her work, right when her stylist had arrived at the mansion. The group of stylists got Caroline and Charles ready for the event.

Charles was waiting for Caroline in the foyer. He wore a classic tuxedo with a black bowtie. He looked at the watch on his wrist, wondering when Caroline would go down the stairs. Just then, a woman wearing a sequin sparkly rose gold open leg dress walked down the steps of the stairs. Both her legs were exposed by the openings on the dress as well as her cleavage and her upper abdomen. Her beautiful long hair was left straightened. She wore some rose gold earrings and some sparkly rose gold high heels, matching the beautiful and sexy dress.

Caroline stepped off the last step of the stairs and Charles grasped her hand. He made her do a slow spin. Then, he said, “you look beautiful.” Caroline smiled, showing her pearly white teeth. “Thank you.”

Just then, Mia and Ian approached them. “Mommy! You look beautiful,” said Mia. Ian handed Caroline the white rose he held in his hand. “This is for you, mommy.” Caroline continued smiling as she grabbed the rose. She smelled the rose, then said, “thank you, my little angels.”

Caroline and Charles said goodbye to the twins and left them in the care of Louisa before leaving. They got in the white limousine. They arrived at their destination minutes later and the chauffeur opened Charles’ door for him. He got off, then he walked to Caroline’s door. He opened the door and extended out his hand for Caroline.

Caroline got off the limousine and held onto Charles’s arm as they walked down the red carpet. They posed in front of the hundreds of paparazzi before going inside the venue.

Right when Caroline and Charles stepped inside the venue, Joseph presented them to the crowd. Caroline wore her signature smile as they walked past the crowd, clapping and congratulating her on the deal she had closed just a few hours ago. The business deal was so grand, that was all over the news. Caroline and Charles continued walking until Caroline spotted a particular face amongst the crowd. A face she never wished on seeing that day.
