Chapter 25 Let's Play

At the airport, Persephone had just arrived from New York. She called her chauffeur and went straight to her mansion. As soon as she arrived, she went inside the mansion, where she was sure to find Elijah. Though she would never think he had some company.

When she stepped inside the living room, looking for him, she saw him kissing a woman while sitting on the couch. “I thought I told you to not bring prostitutes into my house.” Elijah separated from the kiss and glanced at the angry woman standing in front of him. He reached out his hand to the woman sitting on top of him. He pulled her into another kiss, completely ignoring Persephone.

Persephone’s rage intensified. She was fed up with this man. Not only did she had to stay at Elizabeth’s mansion because of him, but he was also bringing his ‘friends’ to her mansion. Persephone was truly fed up with his shit. She fetched her cellphone from her designer handbag and said, “is she going to leave, or should I have someone kick her out?”

Elijah separated from the kiss once again. He glanced at Persephone and then said, “I’m gonna have to ask you to leave.”

“What?” Uttered the woman as Elijah made her stand up. “My wife doesn’t want you in her home. I’m sorry. I’ll see you again sometime... or not.” Elijah finished dragging the woman out of the house. He walked back to the living and sat back on the couch. He leaned back as Persephone walked closer to him. She looked at him then fetched some papers from her purple handbag and threw them on top of the coffee table. She then threw a pen on top of the papers.

“What’s this?” He asked. “Divorce papers. Sign them and get the hell out of my life.”

“What about the agreement-.”

“That agreement has been terminated. Now, all you have to do is sign them and never show up in front of my face.”

“I told you I had no intentions of divorcing you just yet.” Persephone chuckled. “If you’re wondering about the settlement money, go to page number four. That’s what you are interested in.” Elijah grabbed the documents on the coffee table and glanced through the pages as he reached page number four. He looked at the amount of money Persephone agreed to pay him.

“As you can see, that is way more than what you can get for being married to me for ten years.”

“Why are you in such a rush to divorce me? Have you forgotten all the great times we’ve had together?”

“There were no great times with you. I want you to always remember I married you because you tricked my parents into thinking you would be the heir to the Pierce family when in reality your father disowned you.”

Elijah placed the document back on top of the coffee table and leaned back against the couch. “That is exactly why I will not be divorcing you, Persephone. You are stuck with me until I say so. This is my game, Persephone. I make the rules here, not you.”

Persephone gave him a death stare then her gaze started traveling down south. She looked at his shirt which had been unbuttoned all this time and said, “would you please button up your shirt?”

“Why? Is it bothering? Am I getting you aroused?” Persephone looked to the side and exclaimed, “take him away, boys!” Just then, two police officers walked inside the living room. “What is this, Persephone? What is going on?”

The two police officers grabbed Elijah’s arms and pulled him up from the couch. They started dragging him towards the entrance of the mansion. Persephone followed behind them until they stopped walking. Persephone fetched some other document from her purse and showed it to him. “Here is a restricting order. I want you as far away from as at least fifty feet.”

“What are you talking about? Are you insane?”

“Yes, I am insane.” Persephone folded the paper and placed it on the pocket of his unbuttoned shirt. “You said you wanted to play. Let’s Play. But we’re going to play my game by my rules,” Persephone spoke, “you should have just taken the billion dollars and signed the divorce papers, but since you don’t want to divorce me, fine. I won’t force you, but I will make your life a living hell. You will wish to never have been born.”

Elijah continued to struggle, trying to get free from the officers’ grip. “You can keep that paper; I have the original and many other copies.” Elijah continued struggling until the officers took him out of the mansion and into the police car. Of course, he wasn’t arrested. They were just ensuring he would be as far from Persephone as the restricting order stated.

With all the struggle Elijah did, the document fell from his pocket to the ground. Persephone took out her cellphone and dialed a phone number. “Hello, Thomas... I have a job for you... I want to remodel my furniture... Yes, I want to get rid of everything and get new furniture... Yes, I want something completely different,” Persephone spoke over as she started walking towards the door of the mansion. She stepped on the document on the floor as she made her way out.

Still talking with an interior designer, she said over the phone, “How long will it take to renew everything... What? At least a month? No, I can’t wait for that long. Is there a way you could have it done by next week?”

“No, Ms. Calimeris, it is not possible.” At that point, Persephone remembered how Caroline would speak over the phone whenever she wasn’t getting her way. By imitating Caroline, she said, “I don’t care if it is possible or not. Get it done. You know the money is not a problem. I’ll be sure to pay you for your hard work.”

The man over the phone let out a sigh and agreed. Persephone hung up the call as her chauffeur drove away. She chuckled and as she remembered Caroline saying, “in the world we live in, if you want someone to take you seriously, you have to speak to them as if you rule this world, if not they will just walk all over you. Just be sure to reward them with a little money afterward.”

Back at the penthouse, Caroline opened a bottle of wine and started drinking it as Breanna sat quietly next to her. To break the silence, Breanna said, “Miss, you said you gave up on men four years ago... is there a reason why?”

“What kind of stupid question is that? Of course, there is.” Caroline looked at the wine swirling around in the wine glass in her hand. “One bottle is not enough to get me drunk, but let’s just pretend I am. Otherwise, I would never say this. Plus, it’s the best way to kill time while we wait for the chauffeur.”

After two bottles of wine, Caroline finished telling Breanna her story with Liam. Of course, she left some details out like the fact that she has twins for her own sake. It was only a matter of time before Breanna figured out Caroline’s name and status.

“That is so sad,” said Breanna in a sympathetic tone. Caroline took the last sip of wine in her glass and responded, “all romance stories are supposed to be sad; otherwise, no one would tell them.”

“Do you still love him?” Caroline looked at the empty wine glass and answered, “I do. I still do. It’s true what they say. You can never forget your first love, but that doesn’t matter because I don’t want him near me. I want him as far away from me as possible.”

“Why?”

“After hearing all the things, he did, you are still asking why?”

“If you love him, and he loves you, you are meant to be together.” Caroline shook her head as she commented, “you truly are naïve.”

“But after what you told me -I think he does love you. I think he really didn’t mean those words.” Caroline clicked her tongue and said, “you weren’t there. You didn’t hear those words. You did not look into his deep green eyes, to know how real his words were.”

Caroline looked at the golden watch with encrusted crystals that she wore on her wrist. “My chauffeur should be here by now.” They both stood up from the couch and Brenna said, “I’m glad there was traffic and you got to share your story with me. And I would like to thank you again for everything you did, Miss.”

Breanna suddenly took Caroline in a hug, taking her by surprise. Caroline patted the girl’s head and said, “yes, take care of yourself, little Bambi.”

“I will.” Breanna waved her hand as she walked to the elevator. The elevator door shut, and Caroline walked back to the living room. Caroline looked at the bottles on the table and the wine glass and let out a sigh. She grabbed the bottles and the wine glass and went to the kitchen. She washed the wine glass and threw the bottles away. She looked out the clear floor-to-ceiling window as she rested her hands on the white marble countertop. She scanned the room until her eyes were fixed on a piece of paper on top of the dining table in the kitchen.

Caroline walked to the table and picked up the note. She read it and chuckled. The note read, thank you for everything, Miss. I will never forget how much you have helped me, and I will also not take it for granted. You taught me so much. I will be sure to turn my life around and follow my dream.”

“Still too naïve. Will she find out what a terrible idea it is to own a small coffee shop. A chain is more profitable, and even if she could not get to own a chain, the big chains will still not let her succeed.” Caroline continued looking at the letter and found the money she gave to Breanna. “This is not all of it, but almost everything is here. Again, thank you for everything, Miss.”

Caroline wore a faint smile on her face. She walked back to the living room with the note in her hand. She grabbed her designer purse and placed the note inside. She walked to the elevator and got on.

When Caroline arrived back at the mansion to have lunch, she found Persephone had just arrived as well. They greeted each other with a warm hug before going inside the mansion. “How was New York?”

“It was okay. I solved the issue I need to solve... You smell like wine. Have you been drinking?”

“Just a bit.”

Right at that moment, Taekyung walked inside the mansion. Caroline and Persephone turned to look at who had just entered. “Hey, Taekyung,” greeted Caroline and Persephone. “Hey,” he responded, showing no emotion. “What’s wrong?” Caroline asked.

“Noting. Someone messed up in one of the reports and I had to fix it.” Just then, Mark walked to the foyer to see who had arrived. He held Caroline’s ferret in his hands. Caroline looked at him and instead of greeting him, she stepped closer to him and said, “I will take my little princess, thank you very much.”

Caroline grabbed the furry animal from his arms and walked away. Persephone chuckled at the sight of Mark’s expression. “Did you guys see how she didn’t even say hi to me?” Persephone nodded. “I guess she cares more for her ferret than her little brother.”

As Persephone walked away, she stopped when she was near him and reached out her hand to rub his head. “Don’t worry too much about it, Mark. You will get your sister’s love someday.”

“Don’t make fun of him... at least not about that. It’s a bit of a touchy subject,” Taekyung followed up. They both laughed as they walked out to the terrace to have lunch. Mark followed behind them as they continued to make fun of him.

After having lunch outdoors with the light breeze flowing through the terrace, they all sat out on the outdoor lounge to converse before going back to work. Except for Mark. He left right after lunch because he needed to attend a lecture. “How was New York, Persephone?” Asked Elizabeth. “It was alright. I talked to my parents and I’ve solved the problem I need to solve. Now I can go back to my home.”

“Oh, it would be a shame if you left us. The twins would really miss you and Achilles.”

“I know. I would miss them, too.”

“You can come to visit us anytime and we will visit you too,” said Caroline. Before the three women could continue their conversation, Charles commented, “Taekyung, was it worth it getting those piercings?” Charles referred to the piercings Taekyung had on each ear. “What do you mean?”

“Oh, I was thinking about getting one-.”

"You’re getting a piercing?” Persephone spoke while chuckling. “Yes, is there a problem?” She continued lauding until she finally said, “no, there is no problem. It’s just that it wouldn’t suit you.”

“And why’s that?”

“It does suit Taekyung because he looks manlier and more muscular. You, on the other hand, look more feminine and would end up looking like a woman if you were to have piercings.” Caroline and Elizabeth instantly laughed and Taekyung gave a light chuckle.

“And what about you? Just because you were a pink outfit, it doesn’t make you more feminine.” Persephone crossed her arms and said, “it’s good that you have an opinion, but I don’t remember asking for it.”

“Well, I didn’t ask for your opinion either.”

“Okay, so we’re even now. Though you might be right. Pink might not soothe me as much as it would soothe you. Maybe I could lend you this suit sometime. We can also go to the nail salon and paint your nails to match this outfit.”

“Sephie, don’t be so mean to him,” said Caroline as she continued to laugh. Her words worsen the situation since they were not sincere. Charles decided to ignore Persephone’s remarks and looked at Taekyung.

“How much can you bench?” Charles asked. Before Taekyung could respond, Elizabeth said, “no. You two are not going to start a completion, trying to see who’s stronger just because Persephone just hurt your ego.” Caroline and Persephone laughed.

“Or you could come to the gym tomorrow and we could put it to the test,” Caroline suggested. “Caroline. No,” Elizabeth uttered. “I like that idea. I will go too,” said Persephone. “It’s settled then. Tomorrow we will all go.”

“Alright.” Both Charles and Taekyung agreed. Elizabeth let out a sigh. Then she stood up from the couch and said, “I will be leaving now. Be here before dinner. All of you.”

After Elizabeth left, Caroline and Persephone also decided to return to work. They were walking to their cars when Caroline uttered, “you were flirting with Chuck, weren’t you?”

“No, I wasn’t.”

“Yes, you were. Why else would you comment on the piercings?”

“I was just doing him a favor.”

“Really? Because it looked to me like you wanted to flirt with him.”

“Caroline, I think you are seeing things. I would never flirt with him.”

“Why not?”

“Because I don’t like him. Why would I flirt with a man if I don’t like them?” Caroline shrugged. “Are you sure you don’t like him? Because the way you were looking at him said otherwise.” Persephone opened her mouth, but no words came out. Then, she raised her eyebrow and said, “I wasn’t trying to flirt with him. You know better than anyone how I flirt.” She reached out her hand and placed it under Caroline’s chin.

Persephone’s thumb trialed Caroline’s soft lips and then she leaned in and placed a peck on Caroline’s lips. “I will be leaving first. I don’t want to be late. See you later.” Persephone removed her hand and walked to her White Mercedes-Benz G-class and got on.

Caroline watched her drive off as she said to herself, “avoiding the subject? I see.” Caroline walked to her Lamborghini as she made a phone call. She got on the red SUV and drove to her company.
