Chapter 31 You Belong to Me

Liam hurried to the swimming platform and jumped into the cold, dark water without thinking twice about it. He started swimming downwards as fast as he could to save Caroline from drowning since she was already sinking. He continued to swim after her until he wrapped his arm around her and swam back to the surface.

Liam carried Caroline up and placed her on the swimming platform. She started coughing and gasping for air. He got on the swimming platform as well and crouched down to look at her. He wore a worried look on his face when she wouldn’t open her eyes. He tried to get her to open her eyes, but she wouldn’t budge. He checked her pulse, and it was rather weak.

Liam stood up and carried her in his arms. He took her to the master bedroom where he uncuffed her and took off her clothes. He laid her down on the bed and covered her with the bed covers. He changed his clothes and sat on the armchair in the corner of the room, looking gloomily at the woman on the bed. This entire time, Caroline did not open her eyes to avoid looking at his face, which led her to fall asleep eventually.

When Caroline finally woke up, she sat up before opening her eyes. She looked around the dimly illuminated bedroom and met at eyes with the man looking at her. He stood up from the armchair and sat on the edge of the bed. She looked at her aching wrist and saw the red mark made with the handcuff. She had already a red mark from the belt when she was doing it with Liam, but now the red mark intensified from when she was unconsciously pulling on the cuffs for intentionally trying to drown herself.

Liam reached out his hand and gently laid it on her cheek. “How are you feeling?” Caroline said nothing. He embraced her in his arms, taking her by surprise. “Don’t you scare me like that ever again.” Caroline was taken aback by his expression. He tightened his grip, refusing to let her go. “Liam- you’re hurting me.”

Liam loosened up his grip just a bit. He continued to hug her for a while. When he finally let go, he handed her another luxurious paper shopping bag and commanded, “get dressed.” He walked out of the bedroom, leaving her staring inside the paper bag. She took out the beautiful designer clothing that was not in stores yet and got dressed. She looked at her wrists and rubbed the reddened skin. She let out a sigh and walked out of the bedroom. She went to the helm, where she found Liam looking out at the sea while piloting the yacht.

She stood behind him until he turned to look at her. Liam placed the yacht on autopilot before getting up from the seat. He stepped closer to her. He stood in front of her, arms crossed as the ocean breeze brushed by. “Why did you do that? Why did you jump? Do you seriously hate me enough to commit suicide? Why would you jump into the ocean like that?”

“I would have died, wouldn’t I?”

“Caroline, do you hear yourself? Do you seriously prefer to die than to be with me?” Caroline rolled her eyes as she said, “spare me the lecture, Liam.” Liam’s blood boiled in rage, he stepped closer and reached out his hand. He placed his hand around her neck while tightening his grip. “You belong to me. No one will take you from me. You can’t escape me. Do you understand?”

Caroline remained silent and Liam loosened his grip. He turned his back to her and looked out to the sea. “We’re on our way back. Make sure you behave yourself or else-.”

“Or else what?” Liam took a deep breath to calm himself. “Or else I will never let you leave my side. Since that is what you desperately want, you will be stuck with me for the rest of your life.” Caroline opened her mouth, but no words came out. She crossed her arms and looked away.

When Caroline jumped into the water, she was not trying to commit suicide. She knew he would jump in and rescue her. Though he took longer than she anticipated, he still saved her. She was not trying to take her life; she was trying to threaten him. She used her own life as a way of getting him to take her back to land. Though she loved him, all she wanted to do was stay away from him. It made her heartache, but she could not stay near him.

When they arrived at the dock, Liam handed Caroline her cellphone, which had run out of battery. “We’re here,” he said. Caroline stood up and grabbed her cellphone. They walked back to Caroline’s Lamborghini. He opened the doors with the car keys he had in his pocket, which he had taken yesterday. He opened the door for her. She got on the SUV and then he closed the door. He got on the driver’s seat and drove to the mansion. “Where are you taking me?”

“You’re home.” The rest of the car ride was silent. When they arrived, Caroline looked at him, expecting him to get off. He raised his eyebrow, not knowing what she wanted. “Aren’t you going to get off?”

“I’m taking your car with me.”

“What? Why?”

“I will get you a new one.” Caroline was about to give him a piece of her mind when she looked at the time on the radio. She remembered the twins would be arriving any time soon and Liam could not see them. She did not know how he would react or what he might do. She opened the door and said, “take the car. I don’t care.”

Just at that same moment when Caroline was getting off the black SUV, Mark was going out of the house. “Caroline? Why is she getting off the passenger’s seat?” Mark managed to get a glance at the inside of the luxurious SUV and saw Liam on the driver’s seat. “Have they been together this whole time? Why didn’t she call or say anything?”

When Caroline was about to close the door, Mark went back inside the mansion. “I’d rather be late to my lecture than be out there,” he said to himself. Mark started walking through the foyer when Elizabeth was passing by. “What are you still doing here? You can’t be late again.”

Just then, Caroline opened the door and stepped inside of the mansion. As soon as Elizabeth saw her, she crossed her arms and angrily said, “Carolina King Urdaneta.” Caroline flinched at the sound of Elizabeth’s tone. She looked up to meet Elizabeth’s gaze. She knew she was in trouble. Whenever her mother would speak in Spanish, it was because she was overly enraged.

“¿Dónde estabas?” Caroline paused for a second. “En la oficina.” Elizabeth raised her eyebrow. “Ven acá. Siéntate.” Caroline lowered her head and walked to the living room. She took a seat on the couch. “¿Por qué me mientes, Caroline?”

“Yo no te estoy mintiendo.” Elizabeth raised her eyebrow. “¿Dónde estabas anoche?”

“Salí tarde del trabajo y luego fui al penthouse. No los quería despertar cuando llegara, por eso no vine ayer.”

“¿Por qué coño me sigues mintiendo, Caroline?”

“Mamá, no te estoy mintiendo.”

“Where were you last night, Caroline? I know you did not leave work late. I talked to your assistant. So, where were you? ¿Por que coño hueles a playa?” Caroline remained silent. Elizabeth let out a sigh. “I know you are old enough to make your own decisions and you can do whatever you want, but this is my house. And you need to abide by my rules. I don’t care where you were. I just care that you answer the phone, or at least call. But since you decided to turn off your phone, now we are having this nice little chat. I wouldn’t have asked you where you were like always, but since you decided to lie to me, now I want to know where you were and with who.”

Caroline stayed quiet for a second before responding. “My phone died, that is why I couldn’t call, and I’ve already told you. I stayed at the penthouse.” Caroline preferred to lie to her mother than to tell her she was with Liam. “Why do you keep on lying, Caroline? Why can’t you just tell me you were with Liam?”

“I wasn’t with-.” Elizabeth cut her off. She took out her cellphone and opened the Newser application. “What the hell is this?” Elizabeth showed her a post with Caroline and Liam together at the entrance of Caroline’s company. Caroline’s mouth fell open. She looked through other posts of her and Liam together. They were both trending on Newser. “Are you going to continue lying?”

“Would you believe me if I told you he kidnapped me?”

“No,” Elizabeth coldly answered. “Why won’t you believe me, mom. I am your daughter. You are supposed to believe me!”

“Caroline, it’s not like I don’t want to believe you- I really do, but you have been lying to me all this time.”

“Mom, please. I’m telling you the truth. You know I would never be with him again. After all he did. After everything I went through. I don’t want that again.” Elizabeth let out a sigh. “What about the pictures? Why were you hugging him?” Caroline looked down at the phone on her lap. “I wasn’t hugging him; I was trying to hide my face so that no one would take a picture of me.”

After a pause, Elizabeth said, “okay.” Caroline looked up to meet her gaze. “The kids should be here any minute.” Caroline nodded. She stood up and hugged Elizabeth. “Thank you for believing me, mom.” Elizabeth wrapped her arms around Caroline and warned, “next time you lie to me, I will be kicking you out.” Caroline chuckled. “Alright.”

After hugging her mother, Caroline made her way to the kitchen. She had not eaten anything in the whole day. On her way to the kitchen, she found Charles who was eavesdropping on the entire conversation. “Why were you eavesdropping?”

“I wasn’t.” Caroline raised her eyebrow and crossed her arms. “Just like she can kick me out for lying, I can kick you out for eavesdropping. Because if there is any time my mom hates more than lying is people listening in on her conversations.” Charles placed his arm over her shoulder and started leading her towards the kitchen. “Yeah, yeah... How was spending time with your ex-husband?”

“You got a death wish?” Charles paused for a second before letting her go. Caroline continued to angrily make her way to the kitchen. She stepped inside the spacious kitchen and looked around. Two chefs were already preparing dinner and two maids were helping Louisa with the snacks for the kids. They all stopped what they were doing when they saw Caroline walk around the kitchen.

They lowered their heads, thinking she was angry about something. But little did they know she was only hungry. “What is there to eat?” She coldly asked. “Ms. King, I will make you something to eat, please take a seat,” a chef spoke. “I am hungry now. Serve whatever you have prepared,” Caroline demanded. “Yes, Ms. King.” Caroline stepped out of the kitchen and a maid gossiped, “I don’t know when she is scarier, when she is angry, or when she is hungry.”

“Shh. She might hear you,” uttered a chef. “I think she is a combination of both right now, so just keep your mouth shut and go do your work,” another chef added. Caroline went to her study and she placed her cellphone on the wireless charger to charge. She waited for it to turn on. The first thing she saw were all the missed calls and messages. She let her phone charge and went back to the dining room.
