Chapter 65 Don't Leave Me

Caroline took a deep breath. Liam cupped her face with his hands. He wiped away her tears and said, “don’t cry anymore, please. Stop crying because of me. My heart aches from seeing you cry like this.” He pressed peck on her forehead and whispered, “I’m not asking for forgiveness. I am not asking you to forget the past. It is just something we cannot do even if we tried. I’m not asking you to run back into my arms-.”

“In a sense, I am already in your arms,” she said, chuckling at the end trying to see if laughing would stop the tears. Liam chuckled with her. His sweet and extremely rare smile did not fade afterward. “Liam, you have to understand, you married me because of a key. You married me because your father told you to-.”

Liam had been shaking his head. “I did not marry you because of the key. I did not marry you because of Dante. I married you because I wanted to. I married you because I have been in love with you since our childhood. When Dante told me, I had to marry you -I just had to take the opportunity. I couldn’t let him ruin your father’s company. Yes, I had to marry you with the intention of taking that key from you, but I wasn’t going to. I don’t need the fortune the key brings. I just told you that four years ago because of how much I was hurting you. I had to drive you away and I’m sorry for not being able to keep myself away from you.”

“Liam,” her voice cracked as she spoke, “even with you telling me all of this, it will not change anything. You broke my heart. You broke my trust. You hurt me. I can’t just forgive you and accept you back into my life.”

“I know,” he said in a soft voice, “and I’m not asking you to. I just wanted you to know I have always loved you and I will always love you. And I will fight for your love.”

“Liam, please, understand that just because I have forgiven you before, it doesn’t mean I will forgive you again.” Her heart ached as she said those words. She began to feel her legs giving out, her tears streaming down like a waterfall, and her eyes falling shut. She closed her eyes and she collapsed, her head hitting Liam’s chest. He embraced her into his arms as tears ran down his cheeks. He looked at the woman in his arms and called out her name. He then looked at the bystanders and rushed them to call an ambulance.

When Caroline opened her eyes again, bright luminous lights shined above her. She slowly looked to her side, where she found Liam sitting on the armchair, slowly looking up to look at her. He found her awake and instantly stood up from the chair. “Caroline, are you okay? How do you feel?”

Just at that moment, the doctor walked inside the room. He closed the door and said, “oh, good, you’re awake.” He walked closer to her with a file in his hand. “I just came to check up on you. See if you were awake. Don’t worry, you are fine. You just had a mild faint. You may go back home once the IV finishes. For now, have some rest.”

The doctor finished looking at the files and then he left. Caroline turned to look at the bag of intravenous therapy fluid to her left. The bag was half full. She then looked at Liam. “I’m glad you are okay,” he spoke in a soft and sweet voice. He lightly pressed his fingers against her cheek. “Liam,” she said before trying to sit.

“Don’t strain yourself. You need to get some rest.” Caroline shook her head. She sat up and looked into Liam’s green eyes. “Liam, why are you marrying Rebecca?” Liam was taken aback by the sudden question. “I am not marrying her. Why do you think I never divorced you, Caroline?”

Caroline remained silent. “It’s because I love you. Because I can’t live without you. Because I don’t want to marry any other woman... I only agreed to the engagement because of Noah. I just want what’s best for my child. I don’t want him to grow up without a father. Rebecca made the impulsive decision to tell Noah and the world we were together. I couldn’t bear the feeling of telling Noah I will not be marrying his mother when he deserves a stable family. He is just a child. I cannot bring myself to let him grow up in an unstable home as I did.”

“Liam,” Caroline spoke, “I understand you want the best for your child. But you must understand that being a father doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice yourself for your children. Being a father means being there for your children. My father was never there for me when I was young, look at me now. I don’t want him near me, nor my children. He never sacrificed himself for me nor he was there for me. Being a father means being a present parental figure for your children. Being a father doesn’t mean you have to marry a woman for the sake of your child. Being a father means you will look after your children, take care of them whether you marry their mother or not because it should not matter whom you are with as long as you are looking after your children.”

“Liam, I understand how you feel. I have two beautiful children. There is nothing I wouldn’t do for them. I would kill for them if I had to. They are my little angels. They repaired my broken heart. They filled the void you left in my heart when you decided to drive me away. Now, I would like you to understand that despite all of the things you have told me, I cannot back into your arms. There is just so much I have to think over.”

“Take your time, please.”

“You also have to understand that it is not that easy. You have a child with another woman, and I have my own children.” Right at that moment, Liam’s felt a striking pain pierce through his heart. “Who is the father?” Caroline stayed silent. “Liam... why didn’t you tell me you never signed the divorce papers?”

“Will it be selfish of me to say I never wanted you to marry anyone else?” Caroline nodded and commented, “at the same time, you wouldn’t be able to marry anyone else.”

“Exactly.” Caroline snickered. “You are insane, you know that?” Caroline pressed her hand against his cheek as she spoke. He grasped her hand moved it closer to his lips. He pressed a peck on her hand and said, “I would do anything to keep you by my side. I know my words have no credibility at this moment, but I want you to know that I love you and I always will. I will try to get you to love me again.”

“There is no need. I already love you,” she said to herself as she looked at Liam. “He looked at the IV fluid bag and said, “get some rest. When we get out of here, I will take you back to Miami.” Caroline nodded. Liam stood up and pressed a peck on her forehead. She leaned back, resting her head on the pillow. She closed her eyes in hopes of getting some rest.

When Caroline and Liam walked out of the hotel, Caroline looked at the dark sky. She got in the black Rolls Royce and Liam closed the door. He walked to the other side of the vehicle and got in. Caroline looked at the time portrayed in front of her and said, “let’s go back to Miami tomorrow. I am too tired for a four-hour drive right now.”

Liam looked at her and asked, “are you sure?” She nodded silently. He drove back to the hotel. They went up to Caroline’s suite. Caroline opened the door and walked inside. She invited Liam inside her suite before closing the door. Caroline stepped closer to him and wrapped her arms around him. He tightly held her into his arms and said, “again, I’m sorry for all the pain I have caused you.”

He pressed a peck on her forehead and said, “have a good night, Caroline. I will be next door if you need anything.” He slowly loosened his grip around her, but she gripped tighter. “Don’t go,” she softly voiced, “don’t leave me.” He looked down at the woman burying her head against his chest. “I will not leave,” he whispered. Caroline let go of him and he picked her up. He carried her to the bed and let her down on the bed. He took off her high heel wedges before tucking her into bed. He pressed a peck on her forehead and said, “get some rest.” He stood up, making her sit up. “Where are you going? Stay.”

Liam looked at her. He nodded softly and sat on the bed with her. He leaned back against the headboard as she rested her head on his chest. She heard how fast his heart was beating and chuckled. He pressed a peck on her head once more before she drifted off to sleep.

The next day, Caroline was woken up by a peck Liam pressed on her forehead. She smiled without opening her eyes. Liam pressed a sweet peck against her forehead, cheeks, and nose, making her giggle. He was about to press a peck on her lips when she said, “Mommy’s awake, Mia.”

Liam was taken aback by her words. Caroline continued to smile as she slowly opened her eyes. Her chestnut eyes met with Liam’s green eyes. He leaned in again and pressed a peck on her lips. “Good morning,” he sweetly spoke. He smiled and she smiled back. “I didn’t mean to call you Mia,” she said. “It’s fine. I assume she wakes you up like that?”

“Yes, sometimes if I am not awake before her.”

“Caroline, who is the father?”

“Liam, you know I don’t want to answer that question, so stop asking me about it.” Liam could not help but dwell on the thought of Caroline being with another man. At some point, his jealousy began to creep in. Caroline, knowing what he might be thinking about placed her hand against his cheek. He turned to look at her as she caressed his cheek. “This has been the first time we have just slept.”

Liam grabbed her hand and pressed a peck on it. “It feels nice waking up next to you. I wish I could wake up by your side every morning. Sleep next to you every night. Have your presence by my side. Your scent lingering in the air.” She smiled and said nothing.

Caroline sat up from the bed. She stood up and walked closer to the shopping bags she received yesterday. “We should have some breakfast before we leave. We should be back in Miami in five hours.” She turned to look at the man lying in bed and asked, “sounds good?” He nodded. He stood up from the bed and walked closer to her. He wrapped his arms around her and said, “I will let you get ready.” He pressed a peck on her lips and then he walked away.

After getting ready, Caroline was looking for her cellphone when she remembered Liam threw it into the sea. She let out a sigh and then her mind began to clog with the memory of Liam apologizing and telling her how he felt. “Do I truly wish to forgive him? Can I forgive him? Should I forgive him? Will he get rid of Rebecca?” She then returned from her thoughts when she heard a knock on the door.

After Caroline and Liam had breakfast together, they were back on the road, driving back to Miami. Caroline turned to look at Liam and said, “The words you told me yesterday, your apologies felt more real than the words you told me four years ago.” He turned to look at her for a quick second before looking back at the road.

“That is because those words were real. What I told you four years ago wasn’t real. They felt real because it hurt you, but it was all a lie. I lied when I told you I didn’t love you. I lied when I told you I was only after the key.” He added as he looked at her, “I will repeat this a thousand times if I have to, Caroline. I want you to trust me again. I want you to love me again.”

“What are you going to do about Rebecca?” He responded, “I will call off the engagement.” Caroline asked, “what about Noah?” He responded, “he is still my child. I can’t change that. I will still look after him.” Caroline then looked out the window and asked, “wouldn’t you want to take custody of Noah?” Liam shook his head. “No, not unless Rebecca stops me from seeing him after I cut all ties with her.”

Caroline chuckled. “Of course, she would let you see Noah whenever you wanted. I’m sure she would be delighted to find a way to weasel her way back into your life. Just like she always has.” Liam looked at her with a smirk on his face. “Nothing has happened yet, and you are already jealous? Something tells me you have more feelings for me than what you are letting on.”

Caroline rolled her eyes and looked away. Liam smiled as he glanced at her for a second. He reached out his hand and placed it on her thigh. Caroline looked at him but did not protest. She looked at the road and eventually fell asleep.
