“Excuse me, how can I help you?” A woman sitting behind the front desk asked me. She was an older lady probably in her forties but had that cute Bob cut. Her smiled was welcoming and friendly.

“I think I’m at the wrong place. Is this Phoenix?” I asked though I had already seen the sign engraved on the wall behind her.

She smiled at me and said, “You’re at the right place. Can I see your card?” I pulled out the card from my bag and handed it over to her.

“If you don’t mind me asking, how did you come to know about this place?”

“An acquaintance of mine handed this card over to me. She said I’d get a job here.”

“You’re definitely at the right place. By the time your term will be over you’ll be floating in money, sweetheart. Come follow me.” I didn’t know what she meant by my term. Was this some sort of contractual job?

I followed her despite my confusion.

She led me inside. I noticed the walls were bare of anything. Not a single picture hung on them. Instead different designs were engraved on them. I also noticed a couple of young women going inside the small door that lead underground.

One thing I found strange about it was that all of them wore funny costumes. For example, one woman wore a sexy nurse outfit and the other one was wearing a latex outfit, so tight I wondered how it hadn’t killed choked her.

What was this?

I hoped I wasn’t going to get caught up in some prostitution ring.

The woman knocked on some door and male voice called in. I followed behind her.

“Who do we have here, Linda?” The man who I was guessing was the owner of whatever this thing was called said.

He was tall and lean. Dirty blonde hair was messily scattered across his forehead that gave him a boyish look. His eyes were brown and he was wearing a grey dress shirt. The top buttons of his shirt were undone.

He cast a lopsided smile that made the woman beside me blush.

“Adam darling, this is Sienna Lake.”

“Sienna? Nice name Sienna. I’d like to speak with you. Please excuse us Linda.” The woman, Linda smiled politely and left us to ourselves.

“Please have a seat.” I sat across him.

“I’m Adam Parker.” He extended his hand.

“I’m Sienna Lake....” when he cocked his eyebrows I realized that I had been already introduced. “But you already know that.” I added with an awkward laugh. He smiled back.

“How did you get to know about us?”

Since I was potentially going to work for them, I decided to tell them the truth.

“I was in need of money and I met a woman who gave me your card.” I showed the card to Mr. Adam Parker.

“I see, she’s probaby been here. Did she say anything about what this was about?”

“I’m assuming a job that pays well.” Honestly, I was clueless before I came here but passing this woman with funny outfits clouded my mind even more.

“But do you know what you’ll be doing?”

“Mr. Parker, I’m willing to do anything that will help me earn fast money. I may sound like a money hungry bïtch to you but I honestly don’t care about what people think of me anymore.” I didn’t care if I sounded rude. My patience was hanging on a thin line. Time was running fast and so was my mother’s life.

“I understand the need for money, Sienna. No one’s judging you for anything. I’m just getting to know you better if you’re going to work for me.” He replied straightforward.

“Yeah, you’re right. I’m sorry if I sounded rude. I just need the job really quick.” Now I sounded desperate.

“Okay, you’ll have to submit a few documents and sign a non-disclosure agreement and then as soon as a client requests you you can start working.” My eyes widened at his statement.

Client?

Non-disclosure agreement?

I really hope this wasn’t a prostitution ring or something. I wanted the money but selling my body for it? Mom won’t be proud.

“I’m sorry, did I hear it right, did you say about a client requesting me?” I voiced my question. He gave me a strange look before smiling.

“Yeah, for the work? No one’s going to pay you a million dollars for nothing, right?”

“A million dollars?” I couldn’t believe it. I was going to get paid a million dollars for only some household work?

“No negotiating with me, darling. You can ask for a raise only to the client. But I’ll deduct a standard ten percent commission share.”

“That’s fine. I just need a job really soon. When can I begin?” The sooner I get the job the faster I’ll get paid and be able to begin mom’s surgery.

“Patience, love. Here, sign this and you’ll be allotted a unique number, that’s basically a code, and you have to submit your identity proof and stuff.” I took the pen he offered and signed above the line.

On another form I filled in my personal information and handed it back to him.

“Good, now this is your number. We’ll call you when it’s time.” He handed me a token card with a six digit number inscribed on it.

“How soon will I be able to start?” I enquired.

“Usually my girls are taken up within two or three days days. But since you’re in a hurry I’ll see to it that you don’t have to wait.”

“Thank you.”

*****

I had been desperate waiting for the call since yesterday when I signed up for the ‘work’. I had no idea what I was going to do. There had been no description about the type of work but I was pretty sure it was some household chores.

A million dollars?

Holy cow!

That was huge.

Who would be willing to pay so much for some household stuff?

I jumped in shock at the loud ringing of my phone. I fidgeted for the answer button before pressing it.

“Hello.”

“Am I speaking to Ms. Sienna Lake?”

I recognizing the voice of Linda, who worked at Phoenix.

“Yes, it’s me.” I tried not to show how desperate I was.

“Congratulations, Ms. Lake you have been chosen by our client, Mr. Rafael González.”

“Really? Um... I mean thank you. When do I have to start?”

“He’s asked you to come visit him tommorow morning at 8 a.m. at his residence.” I noted down the address and thanked Linda again for the news.

I quickly mumbled a thank you to the God watching above me.

Finally I would be able to save my Mom.

I hugged Em who was studying in her room.

“What’s the matter? Why are you dancing?” She asked.

“I got the job, Em.”

“Really?” She shut her books and smiled in joy.

Suddenly I realized something.

“Oh shit!”

“Now what?”

“I don’t have a decent dress to wear. It’s the first day of the job and I don’t have a good outfit. I don’t want him to see me looking like a homeless woman.”

“Him?”

“My boss. The one who hired me and will be paying me one million dollars.”

“Oh my God! Are you kidding me? That’s huge.”

“I know, we’ll have the best care for mom.”

Em let me borrow one of her dresses which was a bit tight on my boobs. But honestly it looked good. I took a taxi to the address that Linda gave me and found myself in front of a freakishly beautiful home tucked into the corners of the city. I knew the dude was rich when he offered me a million dollars but damn, if this was the home he was living in then he was insanely rich.

I paid the taxi driver and clutched my shoulder bag tightly in my arms. I shiver went down my spine that left me in chills.

The doorman asked for my name and I’d proof. After that he let me in through the gate that led through the long driveway.

Relax! You’re just nervous, Si.

I looked around to find various cars parked in the garage. There was no one around making me more nervous. I pressed on the buzzer and waited for the person I was here to meet. The door opened and my heart almost stopped beating.
