Olivia

“You’re staying at my house tonight, end of story.” Hailey bursts out, outraged at what just happened. “I’m not going to let you stay locked up in your house tormented by all the what if’s. We are going to do something fun.” Why didn’t he at least tell me what was going on? I thought we had put a label on us? A “thing.” Hailey was right though. I would have just sat there on my bed watching reruns of The Office and consumed with thoughts of Jamie and Addison. I feel a pinch at my chest. What if he shows up to my house and I’m not there. Hailey chimes in as if she had just read my mind. “...And don’t you dare think about texting him. He doesn’t deserve a message from you until he gives you a good explanation…” I feel sick to my stomach.

Hailey’s house was always a bit out of control with four younger brothers who were always either wrestling or running after each other in the house. Hailey’s mom was always so chill too, I don’t know how she does it. I don’t think I’ve ever seen her lose her cool either. “Oh Olivia! It’s so good to see you!” I gave her a huge hug. “Timmy, oh Timmy we don’t use the toilet brush as a sword.” And she was gone. I followed Hailey up to her room and sat on her bed.

“Okay do we want to A, watch a movie and eat some scrumptious popcorn….B, go get something to eat at the diner then see a movie at the movieplex….or…C. Go get shitfaced at Tainers.”

“Well I don’t think I’m up for getting shitfaced tonight even though it is tempting and I am pretty hungry”

“Perfect than plan B it is.” She laughed. She thinks she’s hilarious sometimes.

My phone starts to vibrate. Jamie is calling me. I show Hailey and she just shakes her head no.

I put it back in my pocket and sigh. She quietly claps. “Good. Let him squirm. Now I’m just going to freshen up and we will get going. I already talked to my mom, she’s going to bring us.” “We really need to get our licenses, we are like the only seniors without one.”

I take my phone out and stare at it. Maybe I should have just answered. What if this whole thing is just a big misunderstanding. I shake my head. Stop it Olivia. I just don’t know what happened from this morning till this afternoon. Addison is so pretty but there’s no way things could happen between her and Jamie over the course of only a day, can it? Hailey comes back in after freshening up her make up. “I have to stop by Tainer's quick, I left my bag there. Ready?” That would explain the overpowering smell of perfume. “Yea, let’s go.”

We made the pit stop at Tainer's, Hailey’s mom and I waited in the car. Hailey takes an obscene amount of time just to get a bag before coming back out. Her hair is a bit of a mess. “Did you find your bag?” she rolled her eyes at me before showing it to me but we both know what went down. Hailey’s mom doesn’t seem to be fazed.

The food was good. I got the chocolate chip pancakes of course and Hailey got her grilled cheese with cheesy bacon fries. Jamie had tried to call me a total of three times while I was at the diner. No voicemail though. Hailey dropped us off at the movies. We find our seats and Hailey is weirdly quiet.

“You okay?” I asked

“Um….Yeah…..um, when I saw Tainer to get my bag he actually told me some things?”

“And….what did he say Hailey?”

She took a deep breath.

“Okay….so he said that Jamie used to hang out with Addison at their old school. I guess they were kinda a couple? But Tainer seems to think that they are just friends right now…… I don’t know Liv. It just seems a bit odd to me. If there really wasn’t anything going on between them then how come he didn’t just tell you, you know. I just don’t want to psych you out before you get all the info.”

Tears start to fill my eyes and then the trailers start to play.
