What a joke. Twenty-seven years old and freshly divorced. I’m not even sad about it. I’m angry. But only a little… I think. Maybe I’m not even angry. If you’ve ever gotten divorced, you know the mixed feelings. Nothing scandalous even happened. Nobody cheated, nobody committed a crime or atrocity. It’s an age-old tale. We got married too young, knew too little about each other and when the sex finally stopped, we had nothing left in common.

The divorce had been a mutual decision.

Mostly I feel embarrassed. I’m not even thirty, he’ll not even in my late twenties and I’m already divorced. Now I have to pick my life back up and move back East. We only moved to Seattle a year ago for Andrew’s job. There’s nothing for me on this coast. My friends, my family, and Clay are all on the east coast.

Clay, my best friend and the Man of Honor at my wedding, thought it was too dangerous for me—a woman on her own—to make the trip alone. But I couldn’t fly because half of what we had was mine and we’d divided it fairly.

Somehow, Clay had convinced me to make a real trip out of it. Instead of doing it in a week, driving eight hours a day, he had an entire road trip planned. I’d given him free reign, but he was way more excited than me.

But for Clay, I’d do anything.

This is my chance, the second one. I’d blown the first. When she’d brought that tool Andrew home from college senior year I hadn’t actually thought she was serious about him. Next thing I knew she was engaged and asking me to be her Man of Honor. I didn’t even know that was a thing.

I’m still not convinced it is.

Fallon has been my best friend since we were five. I’ve been in love with her since I understood what love is.

When she’d called me and told me her marriage was ending I’d been happy.

How messed up is that?

I’m happy that my best friend’s marriage is ending. I’m a horrible friend.

But I won’t lose her again.

I’ll always be her friend, even if she rejects me, she’ll always be my person. But I won’t be able to live with myself if I never tell her how I really feel.

I just need the perfect moment to present itself. I’ve got this entire road trip planned, down the west coast—to Portland, Big Sur, San Francisco, LA, San Diego and then back up through Vegas then to Salt Lake City. Then we’ll cut through Wyoming on our way to Denver. She’s been obsessed with Wyoming since she read some cowboy story when we were kids. Once we leave Denver we’ll drive down to Austin and then across to New Orleans. Then I’ll drive us back up to St. Lois, and then to Chicago before we head back down to Nashville and then through the Smokey Mountains. The last leg will be Savannah, then Charleston and up the rest of the east coast until we hit Baltimore—our home town.

I’ve got it planned out. Six entire weeks on the road. I’ve got six weeks to make her love me too. Thank god she timed her divorce well and it was summer, meaning I had lots of free time.

I hope six weeks is all I need.
