The Ride Home

Chapter 1

The boys all sat awkwardly in the boat.

The boat was in no way roomy; so the boys were forced to sit close together, shoulder-to-shoulder close.

The captain had gone to the ships bow pointedly ignoring the strange assortment of boys that served as his passengers and choosing instead to focus on the steering the small craft to the main boat.

Consequently the boys were left alone starring at each other in stunned, tense silence.

It was a hot day and sweat beaded down the boys forehead, causing the war paint to slowly run down each cheek like a long ugly scar. This dirty pattern decorated the faces of all the boys but one.

Ralph sat closest to the navy officer in a futile attempt to escape Jack’s tribe. Samneric sat on either side of him doing what they could to help poor Ralph.

Directly opposite Ralph sat Jack.

Jack’s eyes were cold as steel but he murderous instinct seemed to have softened somewhat. The same could not be said for the boy sitting to his right; Roger.

There was a jolt as the boat caught a wave splashing the boys.

“Haha watch it down there,” The captain chuckled.

He looked back at them, and the boys gave a weak smile in return.

“Strange lads,” the captain mumbled before returning to the stern.

As the boat grew closer to the main ship the ride became even more bumpy. None of the boys so much as flinched. They continued in silence sit ram-rod straight. Occasionally one of the littlun’s would venture a word, but he was soon cut off by the glares of the others.

-------------------------------------------------------------

Even when the sailors brought the boys onto the ship; the boys remained silent.

When they returned home to weeping parents; the boys stayed silent.

Two years later when fate would chance them to meet again; the boys would remain silent.

CookieMonster911: The story overall was an adventure that is appealing to any age. The way the characters develop adds a more human characteristic to the novel. The writing style itself is amazing because you can learn every character's thoughts and emotions. The awkward love triangle and jerk moments adds to the ...

JWalker: I loved this story from start to finish! It flows at a really nice pace and the story world feels so real. The fight sequences are a treat especially when Isanfyre is training to become a warrior. I found the names really cool and thankfully easy to pronounce. Personally I have always struggled w...

carla1234: I couldn't stop reading this book once I started! it was brilliant! I loved it and I would love to buy it. Jessica Esa: With a tantalising end to the first chapter, the authour has given us a treat and a welcome addition to the fantasy adventure genre. To limit it to just such would be an injustice however, as this novel clearly draws on elements of historical fiction, fairy tale and horror. Simply, there's someth...

Lydia Walters: I really enjoyed this novel. It gives us a view of what could be if we really tried. Also that there's nothing wrong with loving our LORD and our fellow humans. couldn't wait to get to each new chapter (mission). Thanks, Joe!

littlebunnypoopoos: Omg this was so amazing! The ending was a little bad and predictable. But otherwise, I need a second book or I'll die :D The character development was excellent and the whole romance, action, and suspense was superb

dd1226: I love reading about other countries and I think this story about Cambodia after Polpot creates awareness of the tragedy that happened there and the actions of the U.N. to hold elections. The heroine of the story is easy to relate to, a modern, middleaged woman looking for an adventure, wanting t...

genlynne2379: I read the other review of this book and I must say that I disagree with it wholeheartedly. I do not believe the author put the apostrophes in the names just to be unique, but because the characters are supposedly of a different race than humans. They are Anmah. They should have different names a...

ArgyrisMetaxas: Thrilling story which builds layer ontop of layer. A few mis spellings every few chapters. What I found special was that it took a modern day problem and took it to its logical conclusion and plays this realism with gritting precision. I'm always on edge ready to shout from adrenaline. This is gr...
