☾ 11 ☾
Jungkook and Taehyung never talk about what they are to each other, the were both very aware of the mate bond and Taehyung knew that Jungkook was in love with him but they were still yet to address what all that meant. The bond they shared had definitely developed to above friend level, if the constant stolen kisses and late night make out sessions were anything to go by. Jungkook didn’t want to address anything, fearing that if he mentioned it than it would seem as if he was forcing the elder to confront his feelings, and there was no way he was going to risk what they currently had with him.
Taehyung, on the other hand, was scared about everything. He knew he had more than friendly feelings for Jungkook, that fact was more than obvious. But he didn’t know anything about a mating bond, and what it would mean for him if he was to give himself to Jungkook. The simplest thing to do would be to ask the boy himself, but he was also scared of the answers he would receive so he just stayed quiet.
With the conversation looming over him, Taehyung decided to busy himself more with his book to ignore how pathetic he felt for avoiding it. He had already managed to get almost half the book completed, not that he was sure it was any good. He knew he needed to talk to his publisher, set up a meeting with her so he could get some good feedback on his work so far, yet another conversation that he had been pushing off until now. Deciding to take the opportunity of Jungkook being on a run, Taehyung heads to his ‘signal spot’ as he’s named it to phone his publisher and finally update her on the situation.
It’s halfway through the conversation when the man begins hearing strange noises in the bushes around him, but he just shrugs it off and thinks Jungkook had probably sensed he was out here and is deciding to play with him. He curls more into his hoodie (Jungkook’s hoodie actually, but he steals it enough to call it his own by this point) and finishes the conversation up, promising his publisher that he will drive to the company sometime during the week to show her his progress.
“Kookoo, I know you’re messing with me, just come out.” Taehyung laughs as he hangs up the phone, his eyes scanning the surrounding bushes to see which one Jungkook was hiding behind. More rustling is heard but there is no sign of Jungkook, making Taehyung roll his eyes. “Are you trying to scare me? I know how soft you are so it isn’t going to work.”
Louder noises sound before Taehyung sees not one, but two pairs of glowing eyes staring intensely at him through the leaves. “Kookoo?” He says in a small voice, completely disregarding his earlier comment about not being scared.
Two wolves approach him, neither of them being Jungkook. One was slightly larger than the other with dark grey fur, the smaller one was pure white. Both were growling at him deeply, baring their teeth so much that Taehyung curled into himself on the tree stump in an attempt to become invisible. He was trembling, convinced he was going to die until Jungkook finally showed up to come to his rescue.
Jungkook was bigger than the other two, his black fur and glowing red eyes enough to make the other two wolves back down immediately. Taehyung’s fear turned into confusion when Jungkook stops growling and cocks his head at the other wolves, staring them down for a second until his tail started wagging furiously and he was nuzzling up to the white wolf.
“They almost killed me and you’re cuddling up to them? Unbelievable.” Taehyung chokes out, voice rough from the fear of a near-death experience. Jungkook stops in his tracks before making his way back to Taehyung and nuzzling up against him instead, an attempt to show him that everything was a misunderstanding.
“I suppose you want me to invite them back to our cabin?” Taehyung asks sarcastically, but not surprised when Jungkook nods in agreement. The elder sighs before shakily standing, still not fully recovered, he can’t help but smile when Jungkook stands beside him in an attempt to hold him up. “Well, I already look crazy for having one wolf at my place, I might as well just invite two more in. Follow me.”
Jungkook doesn’t leave his side during the walk back, scared he might fall if he isn’t supporting him as much as he could. Taehyung scratches behind his ear in appreciation, both of the wolves behind them looking at the scene intently in an attempt to work out what the hell was going on.
“I guess you two are werewolves as well so you can go shift and dress yourselves in the bedroom, Jungkook will find you something that will fit.” Taehyung waves them all off before heading to the kitchen to get a glass of water.
Jungkook pads off towards the bedroom, the other two standing by the door slightly confused before following the younger wolf, desperate to find out why a random human knows what they are. Jungkook’s already thrown on a pair of sweatpants and is in the process of tugging a shirt over his head as the others enter, he throws them a smile before turning his attention back to the dresser full of his clothes.
“Uh, everything I have might be a bit baggy on both of you but they’ll work,” Jungkook mumbles as he gets out two more pairs of sweatpants and two white shirts before laying them down on the bed. “I’ll give you both some privacy,” he laughs before leaving the room, the two wolves staring at the door for a minute before deciding to change into their human forms.
“Care to explain to me what the hell that was?” Taehyung narrows his eyes at the younger as he enters the living area, the latter throwing him a sheepish smile before sitting down next to him.
“They’re my best friends from my old pack, I have no idea what they’re doing back here so don’t ask.”
“And why were they about to rip me into tiny pieces before you showed up?”
“Well, you’re wearing my hoodie so I guess they smelt me on you, the fact they couldn’t see me around probably made them think you killed me or was keeping me prisoner or something...” Jungkook laughs but cuts his laughter short when Taehyung simply just glares back at him. “It’s a werewolf instinct to always think the worse of humans, they don’t know how kind hearted and amazing you are just from the first impression, okay?”
Taehyung sighs, he knew he was overreacting but that still doesn’t mean he feels okay about the whole terrifying experience. All in all, he was just happy that Jungkook was there to save him. “I was so scared,” he voices out, instinctively curling up into Jungkook’s side.
“I know, baby.” Jungkook lets the nickname slip, something he’s been doing more and more since their first kiss. Not that Taehyung was complaining about it, he loved hearing the sweet name roll off of the younger’s tongue so comfortably. Taehyung didn’t even realise he was leaning in for a kiss until they were startled apart by the sudden clearing of someone’s throat, both of them completely forgetting they weren’t alone anymore.
Jungkook turns around with a smile, motioning for the two men to join them in the living room. “Tae meet Jinie and Joonie, they’re my best friends but they’re more like my big brothers.”
Namjoon sits down in the armchair and Jin perches himself onto his lap, both of them cautiously eyeing up Taehyung. “And who are you, ‘Tae’?” Jin asks in his best overprotective tone.
“I’m Taehyung! I moved here so I could write my second book, I’m a well-known author.” Taehyung says happily, eager to get to know Jungkook’s friends.
“How do you know our little Kookie?”
“I found him in the forest after his fight with your pack leader, I put my best nurse brain on and treated his wound until it healed. Now we’re uh-” Taehyung cuts himself off there since he really didn’t have a clue as to what they were at this moment in time.
“He’s my mate.” Jungkook excitedly finishes the elder’s sentence.
“You finally found your mate? Aw Kookie, we’re so happy for you. Aren’t we, Jinie?” Namjoon coos, but Jin still hesitantly glares at Taehyung.
“And?” Jungkook narrows his eyes in confusion, not knowing why Jin was trying to put a downer on things.
“Human mates are rare. Have you sealed your bond yet?” Jin carries on questioning the younger, the question making him flush in embarrassment.
“Jinie, can we not talk about this here?”
Taehyung’s eyes dart back and forth between the two in confusion, the new information peaking his interest. “You have to seal a mate bond? You can’t just find your mate?”
“You haven’t even told him about how your bond works? I knew we should’ve come back for you sooner, you clearly can’t do things by yourself.” Jin sighs.
“Give the kid a break, he was probably overwhelmed with the fact his mate isn’t a werewolf like he is.”
“Can someone please explain this to me?” Taehyung tries again, feeling very left out with his lack of knowledge.
Jungkook keeps his eyes trained on his lap, too embarrassed to look at anyone else in the room. It was up to Jin to break the tension, Taehyung had a right to know what he was getting himself into after all. “Bonds are sacred within our world. I’m sure Jungkook has told you snippets of what it means to be his mate, so I’m just going to get straight to the point. To seal your bond with an alpha like Kookie is, the alpha will have to knot their mate and then bite them as they’re locked together. I have no idea how it affects humans, but for us werewolves when we seal a bond it brings us closer to our mates.”
“What do you mean by the fact he’ll have to ‘knot’ me?” Taehyung narrows his eyes, he’d read up a little on werewolves but never did he come across anything like that.
“Can we not do this? Tae hasn’t even thought about if he wants to be with me like that or not, he doesn’t need to know any of this right now.” Jungkook interrupts.
“Who says I haven’t thought about it?”
“Well, the fact we never talk about what we are is a pretty big sign that you haven’t.”
Taehyung goes silent from the statement, he can’t exactly argue with the truth. He would prefer to have that kind of conversation with Jungkook in private anyway, not in front of two people he’s only just met.
“Well, that’s awkward,” Namjoon mumbles, gaining himself a smack on the arm from Jin.
“What are you both doing here anyway? And without the pack?”
“The pack is heading back down, we couldn’t find anything good where we were heading so we’re circling back. We convinced alpha to let myself and Joonie pass back through these woods so we could look for you, and if we found you we’ll be able to say a proper goodbye. We’re meeting the pack at the edge of the forest after sundown so we don’t have long, we just really needed to see if you were okay after the fight.” Jin explains.
“My parents didn’t want to look for me?” Jungkook asks with a hint of sadness in his tone.
“They did, but your father is so busy with being in charge of the food hunt and your mother is helping Soomi out with the new pups, they couldn’t take the detour like we could.” Jin smiles sadly when the younger just nods back at him. “They still do love you, Kookie. But you know how it is, you’re an alpha so you can’t come back with us.”
“At least you found your mate! The fact you’re not alone out here will bring both of us and your parents some peace. I’m sure we’ll pass through again in a few years, as you know we’re always moving around.” Namjoon jumps in with some positive words, hoping to soothe the younger some more.
Taehyung shifts closer to him of the sofa, carefully linking their hands together. Jungkook lightens up a bit from the action, if Taehyung is able to have this effect on him now he can only imagine how he would feel if they were to seal their bond. “I just really miss you all. I miss being around all the pups and running off with you and Joonie in the forests until alpha would shout at us, and all the midnight moon gazing we did.”
“We miss you too. The pups always whine for you, they don’t understand why you’re not there anymore. It’s hard to get JB off to sleep when he hasn’t got your fur to snuggle into.” Jin laughs out when he sees the younger pout. Taehyung smiles down at the ground as he listens to the conversation, he always knew that Jungkook was the cuddler of the pack.
“Why couldn’t the universe just make me a beta like I was supposed to be? I hate being a stupid alpha, I hate the dumbass pack rules.” Jungkook huffs.
“It was your fate. If you didn’t get into the dominance fight and were injured, Taehyung here never would’ve brought you into his home.”
Jungkook couldn’t argue with that, meeting Taehyung had been a blessing for him, so being cast out of the pack is something he hadn’t thought about much until Namjoon and Jin showed back up. “So you don’t have long to stay then?” He sighs, remembering that this was a one-off visit with his best friends.
“We could still go for a run together if you’re up for it.” Namjoon encourages, something Jungkook is eager to comply with.
The younger quickly stands, eager to finally have company on his runs again. He bounces happily in his spot before he notices Taehyung smiling fondly up at him, in all his excitement he completely forgot about the elder. “Are you okay with me going out? We can always stay and chat...”
“Are you kidding me? Of course, I’m okay with it, go. Stretch your wolf legs with your friends.”
Jungkook places a soft kiss on Taehyung’s cheek which causes the elder to blush before he makes his way out, Namjoon and Jin quick to follow him after they’ve said a kind goodbye to Taehyung.
The wolves play tag and run around happily, feeling just like old times as the enjoyed the time they had together. The younger pushed away thoughts of this being a goodbye for a long time in favour of just enjoying himself and living in the moment, he couldn’t allow his head to ruin his fun. They sit by the lake once they’re exhausted from running around, all of them needing a private chat before they parted ways. Thankfully, being from the same pack meant the boys all shared a communication link, meaning they could speak to each other whilst they were still in their wolf forms. Jungkook’s link with them can’t be broken until he makes a pack of his own, which is something that was very unlikely to ever happen.
“So, Taehyung...?” Jin asks, cocking his head as he stares at the younger.
“What about him?”
“He’s cute.” Namjoon cuts in, and he’s instantly thankful that Jin doesn’t have hands to slap him with.
“I meant are you- like, have you...?”
“We’ve only kissed, we haven’t done anything more. I’m scared to, he hasn’t told me how he’s feeling apart from the fact he can kind of feel our bond, but every time we kiss I know he’s feeling much more than he’s telling me. I think he’s scared because I am what I am, if I was human I feel like we would be together by now.” Jungkook hangs his head sadly.
“So you’re both scared of being together?” Namjoon questions, not understanding why the two are dancing around each other so much we’re they’re literally fated to be together.
“You guys were lucky because you’re both werewolves, it’s different with a human. It takes more time, at least I’m hoping if I give him some time he will want to be with me properly.”
“By the look of things he already does, you just have to both stop being such wimps and communicate with each other.”
Jungkook knows Jin’s right, he’s been trying to talk himself into bringing up the topic with Taehyung for at least a week now but his fear always stops him. He makes a promise to his friends that he’ll talk to Taehyung soon, knowing that if he has a promise riding on it then he’ll be more reluctant to shy away from it. Even though he knows for sure that both Jin and Namjoon won’t be around to see if he goes through with it or not.
The wolves run around more after their serious chat, not wanting to end their time together on a low note. It’s sad when they finally have to leave, Jungkook knowing that they didn’t have the slightest of clues when they were going to see each other again or if they were going to see each other again. He howls sadly as they both nuzzle against him as a goodbye, neither of them communicating the words with each other since it was too hard to.
Then they’re gone, his two best friends running off and leaving him behind, a parting much more painful than the first. Jungkook stays in his wolf form after that, even when he gets home to Taehyung and the elder gives him a questioning look when he doesn’t instantly head to the bedroom to shift. Taehyung doesn’t push the topic though, he simply allows the wolf to lay across him just like old times as he scratches behind his ears soothingly. Losing his best friends and family was hard, but knowing he always had Taehyung around definitely was enough to soothe the pain.
