☾ 19 ☾
Being in heat was definitely one of the strangest things Taehyung has ever experienced and he couldn’t be happier that it was over. He couldn’t be more appreciative to Jungkook for sticking by him throughout every second, complying to his every want and need without hesitation, always comforting with sweet words, showering him in kisses to make him feel special. Jungkook truly was the best person in his life.
Once everything was over Taehyung’s mind finally crashed back to reality, remembering he has a job to do and another meeting with his publisher to go to. With all the new developments going on in his life he really had been slacking, and as he sits within that very meeting he knows he needs to work out a good excuse as to why he was behind with his writing.
“Okay, I know it doesn’t look like I’ve been focusing on my book but I really have. I wasn’t pleased with how the story was going, so I’ve decided to throw something extra into the middle of it.” Taehyung says with what he hopes is a confident smile.
“‘Something extra’?” His publisher asks with an eyebrow raised in curiosity.
“Well I haven’t decided what yet, but it’ll be something big. Everyone will be rooting for the main characters relationship, right? So I wanted to add something in that will really test their relationship, add some tensity in there which will ultimately make them stronger together so when the end hits the readers will feel more.”
“Not bad, Taehyung. But I want you to have this all figured out and written into the book by our next meeting, you’re already behind.”
“Of course,” Taehyung says, letting out a breath he didn’t know he was holding.
As soon as he arrives back home he settles himself on the sofa and begins scribbling ideas and potential storylines down in his journal, trying desperately to come up with something remotely similar to what he had said to his publisher. Jungkook was a little confused by the scene, but he knows better than to disturb Taehyung when he’s in his, as he likes to call it ‘writing zone’, so he simply stays quiet and watches fondly as he furrows his eyebrows in concentration. As he scribbles down idea after idea, Taehyung makes a vow to never slack on his writing again.
A few weeks pass with the same routine, Taehyung writing for hours as Jungkook sits in silence beside him. The younger had taken up the task of finally reading the first novel that Taehyung had written, thinking it was probably bad that he hadn’t already done so. He was already so immersed in the story, losing himself in every word written on the page as if he was within the book himself, his mate really did have a talent for writing.
Jungkook’s broken out of his reading trance by a groan coming from Taehyung beside him, looking over the top of the book to see the elder with his head in his hands. “Headache?” He asks, closing the book to focus on the other.
“I feel like shit to put it lightly, I think I’m overworking myself.” Taehyung groans again.
“You need to take more breaks, I keep telling you this but you keep biting my head off instead of listening to me.”
“I know, you’re right.” Taehyung sighs. “I just don’t have time to break, the meeting with my publisher is next week and I still have so much of this book to edit to be able to slot this new section in… I feel like vomiting whenever I feel think about it.”
“That’s definitely a sign that you’re working too hard. Stop writing and lie down, I’ll start dinner.” Jungkook orders, making sure Taehyung puts all of his things out of reach as he helps him lie down onto the sofa before he walks towards the kitchen, taking glances over his shoulder every now and then to make sure he hasn’t moved.
Cooking was something Jungkook didn’t know he would enjoy so much until he started to get more involved. He loved seeing the way Taehyung’s eyes lit up when he took a bite of whatever the younger had made for him, it truly was the best reward he could receive. He’s cutting vegetables when he smells Taehyung’s scent stronger, knowing that was a signal he was standing right behind him.
“I told you to stay laying down, there’s no way I’m letting you help with the cooking,” Jungkook says without turning around.
“I just wanted to see what you were making, it smells so good…”
“I’m only cutting vegetables, what about that smells good?” Jungkook laughs at the strange behaviour. He continues cutting for a while before he realises Taehyung hadn’t gone back to the sofa, instead he was continuing to stand in the kitchen with him. “Tae, you need to lie down so-“ He stops when he finally turns to face his mate, confused as to what he was seeing.
Taehyung was leaning over the kitchen counter, one of the uncooked steaks between his teeth as he ripped off pieces as if he really was a wild wolf. Now, this is something Jungkook never thought he would be seeing.
“Tae… what are you doing?”
“I’m SO hungry, the meat smelt so good I couldn’t resist,” Taehyung says with a mouthful of raw meat.
“You hate raw meat, you told me that you even hate touching it,” Jungkook states, more confused than he ever had been before.
“Must be a new werewolf development, maybe the exhaustion is bringing out my wild side.” Taehyung jokes.
Jungkook knows that exhaustion had nothing to do with this, but without knowing exactly what was going on he didn’t open his mouth again. He allowed Taehyung to finish eating before continuing to make dinner, only bringing two more steaks out of the fridge when he was about to cook them in fear of Taehyung running over to eat them raw again. Something strange was definitely happening.
Taehyung’s behaviour only grew stranger as the days passed, and Jungkook was starting to figure out exactly what was going on. The strange new cravings, nausea he was always complaining about, the way he always so tired and dizzy, the fact his eyes flashed blue at random times as if his wolf was begging to come out. All the signs only pointed to one thing that Jungkook thought was impossible, and he had no idea how Taehyung was going to react to it.
“I’ve finally finished fixing my story! Hopefully, my publisher will like it, if she doesn’t then I feel as if I’ll cry the whole building down.” Taehyung laughs, placing his journal onto the coffee table in front of him along with his laptop before stretching in victory.
“That’s great!” Jungkook smiles, trying his best to feel happy for the elder.
“What’s up? You look angsty.”
“I- uh… you know what? It’s nothing, I’m just being stupid.”
Taehyung cocks his head, not buying it for a second. “Something’s clearly bothering you so tell me.”
“It’s just… you’ve been acting strange lately, right?”
“If this is another lecture about me overworking myself then can we not? I promise I’ll chill more now that I’ve finished with this.”
“It’s not about that.”
“Then what is it about? The only reason I’ve been acting weird is that I am exhausted, Kookoo. Once i’ve fully rested myself I’ll go back to normal, maybe I’ll even start a cleansing detox to try and get rid of this bloating.” Taehyung groans as he pats his stomach.
Jungkook sighs, how was he supposed to tell Taehyung about his theory without him laughing at him? “I think you’re- uh- well, you know when the female wolves in my old pack- um…”
“Female wolves? Are you trying to tell me you prefer girls?” Taehyung raises an eyebrow.
“No…” Jungkook takes in a deep inhale of breath before finally forcing the words out, “I think you’re pregnant.”
Taehyung can’t help but burst into laughter from the absurd statement, immediately thinking it was a joke to lighten his mood. He starts thinking its less of a joke when Jungkook stares back at him with a completely straight face, no humour evident upon it at all. “Please tell me you’re joking.”
“I’m not joking, Tae.”
“I don’t know if you haven’t realised, but I am a boy, Jungkook. An actual man, penis and everything.”
“I know… but I heard rumours about male omegas being able to carry children, I think that’s why your kind is so special and rare! You have weird cravings, you’re vomiting, you’re tired and lightheaded, they’re all symptoms of pregnancy.”
“This isn’t funny.”
“It’s not meant to be.” Jungkook frowns, not understanding why Taehyung was so quick to deny this whole thing.
“I’ve overworked myself, there’s nothing more to it so stop with the ridiculous theories.” Taehyung sighs loudly before standing from the sofa. “I’m going to take a shower and then head to bed, goodnight.”
Jungkook runs his hand through his hair with a loud sigh as soon as he hears the bathroom door close, a little too aggressively for him to be confident that Taehyung wasn’t mad at him. Sure his theory was a little out there, but was it really? They were werewolves, after all, they were already defying the laws of nature so a male pregnancy really shouldn’t be seen as impossible.
That night when Jungkook slips into bed beside Taehyung after his night run, the elder doesn’t hug him. Instead, he shifts further away, an action that breaks Jungkook’s heart.
Days pass and the theory doesn’t leave Jungkook’s mind. If anything it only grows stronger when Taehyung starts fully resting and still feeling all the same symptoms he was feeling before. He doesn’t mention it, however, not wanting to push Taehyung away more made him keep his mouth closed about the whole thing. Hopefully, in time, the elder will come to terms with everything that’s happened. But for now, it was best to stay quiet.
“My publisher was drinking some apple juice and it was all I could smell throughout the entire meeting, who even likes apple juice?” Taehyung groans as he throws himself onto the sofa, instantly throwing his legs over Jungkook’s lap.
“Well, I like apples, so I guess drinking the juice wouldn’t be much different.”
“If you ever bring apple juice into this house I am leaving. The smell made me so close to throwing up all of my lunch over the table.”
Jungkook hums, he wants to say something but he doesn’t want to end up having yet another mini argument with Taehyung.
“You’re still thinking I’m pregnant, aren’t you?” Taehyung asks, sensing there are things unsaid between the two of them.
“You’re still showing all the signs… but if you say you’re not then fine, I understand.”
“Well yeah, it’s a scary thought knowing you’re carrying a child. If you need some time to accept it then I get it.” Jungkook shrugs.
“I don’t need to accept it because I’m not fucking pregnant.” Taehyung hisses, clearly irritated by the conversation even though he was the one who brought the subject up.
“How can you be sure?”
“Because I’m a man!”
“You’re also a male omega, a very rare and unexplored species.”
Taehyung huffs, staying quiet when he thinks of how to argue back to that. But he can’t find anything because ultimately he knows Jungkook is right, there’s so much he doesn’t know about what he’s become and how exactly his body has changed. That doesn’t mean he accepts the claim, in his mind there’s no way he can be pregnant.
“Fine, you know what?” Taehyung announces as he clambers off of the sofa and heads back towards the door. “I’m going to go into town and buy a pregnancy test.”
“Some stick you pee on which tells girls if they’re pregnant or not, keyword being GIRLS. Once that shows up as negative we can stop all this.”
Jungkook flinches as the door slams, feeling the weight of yet another argument fall upon him. He can’t stand being this way with Taehyung, he misses the smiles and the cuddles, the stolen kisses every minute that passed. The happiness seemed to be drained from their home, and he can only hope that it comes back soon.
Taehyung doesn’t say a word when he comes back from town, only storming towards the bathroom and slamming the door behind him. He couldn’t believe he was having to do this, never in his life did he think he would be buying a pregnancy test let alone taking it himself. Everything about the situation felt surreal, he seriously couldn’t believe this is the turn his life has taken. He takes two tests to be sure, to show Jungkook that they’re both negative so he’s certain that he’ll drop the entire situation once and for all. He couldn’t wait to be done with all of this.
He exits the bathroom with both of the tests in hand, throwing them down on the coffee table in the living room to wait for the results to be shown.
“How does this work?” Jungkook asks, confused as he picks one of the tests up to examine.
“You wait for the line to show. One line it’s negative, two lines its positive. Clearly, we’re only going to see one.”
Jungkook nods, squinting his eyes when he sees the faint lines start to show. “Uh- Tae…”
“Is this my apology? Because I will love to hear it.”
“Two lines is positive right?”
“What?!” Taehyung yells, leaning forward to snatch the test from Jungkook’s hand. “No. This is wrong, there’s no way.”
“Check the other one…” Jungkook mumbles, his head spinning now everything he thought has been confirmed.
Taehyung quickly grabs the second test from the table, freezing when he sees the same two lines displayed on it. He couldn’t believe what he was seeing, it really was unbelievable. “I can’t be… no- I just…”
“Tae,” Jungkook softly says shifting forward to gently touch him.
“Don’t touch me.” Taehyung snaps, instantly shifting as far away as he possibly could. “First I become a werewolf and now this? My life is ruined, everything is ruined.”
Jungkook feels his heart shatter from the words, he thought Taehyung would be excited that they were going to have a baby together so to hear him say his life is ruined was a slap in the face. “Your life isn’t ruined…”
“Isn’t ruined? I’m a pregnant man, Jungkook! I can’t go out once this bump starts to show, people will send me away for testing. Plus, we’re too young for children, I have my entire life planned out and children don’t come into my plan for at least another four years.”
“We can work this out, Tae. You’re not alone, remember?”
“‘Work this out’. Theres no way to work this out.” Taehyung buries his head in his hands, attempting to ease the pounding in his head. “I should’ve never brought a wild wolf into my home, why the fuck did I think that was a good idea?”
If Jungkook’s heart didn’t break before, it was definitely broken now. The words crashing down upon him, burying him alive so he feels like he couldn’t breathe anymore. It was all his fault, he knew it before but hearing Taehyung say he wish he never helped him that day just confirmed all of his fears. He couldn’t stay in the room any longer, every second he stayed was a second he felt as if he was ruining things more.
“I’m so sorry,” Jungkook says quietly before quickly leaving, something he knows he should’ve done a long time ago.
Taehyung stays in silence, the ringing in his ears making him feel as if he had gone deaf. He couldn’t believe what was happening to him, one minute he was just a normal human being moving to the forest in order to have some peace and quiet to write, and now he’s a pregnant werewolf. Everything was too much to take it, but he knows he shouldn’t be taking anything out on Jungkook. He knows his words were harsh, he doesn’t mean them at all, he doesn’t even know why he said them but with all the thoughts spinning around in his head they seemed to have just slipped out. He raises his head to quickly apologise to Jungkook only to see he’s not there, his heart dropping instantly.
“Kookoo?” He calls out, praying he was still somewhere in the cabin. He stands up to search when he doesn’t receive a reply, the guilt drowning him when he sees a pile of clothes carelessly thrown by the backdoor which is a clear sign that he’s run off somewhere. His throat feels as if it was closing up when he makes his way back to the sofa, not having the energy to stand up any longer. He hates himself, he should’ve never said those words, in shock or not he should’ve never taken it out on Jungkook. He can only hope he comes back as he curls into a ball, crying his heart out until he finally falls asleep.
The pain in his head and the ache in his heart are the first things Taehyung feels when he wakes the next day. Jungkook still hadn’t come back and every minute that passes where Taehyung can’t apologise for everything he did is another minute he feels as if he can’t breathe. He knows he should get up and make himself some breakfast, he shouldn’t be punishing the baby just because he’s a complete and utter screw up after all. So that's exactly what he does, rolls himself off of the sofa and pads towards the kitchen, groaning at how much every one of his limbs aches.
He doesn’t make himself anything exciting, thinking a plate of bacon would be enough to satisfy his morning meat craving. It’s hard to keep the food down, the mixture of morning sickness with the sickness he already felt from guilt and regret eating away at him making it almost impossible to even eat let alone keep from throwing it back up. He finds himself back on the sofa after he’s eaten, staring up at the ceiling as he lets his thoughts consume him.
After a while, his eyes fall on the pregnancy tests still laying on the table beside him. He finds himself picking one up, staring at the two lines as if he was trying to work out if yesterday really happened. It was still difficult for him to accept, but as he starts to think about a little baby looking just like him and Jungkook he can’t help but smile. His hand drops down to rest over his stomach, tears welling in his eyes at the thought of Jungkook never coming back to him and being there to see their baby.
“I really messed up, little one.” Taehyung sighs. “Your daddy was just trying to help and all I did was throw everything back in his face…”
Taehyung shakes his head when he realises he’s resulted in talking to his unborn child for a little bit of comfort. He needs to find Jungkook, he can’t spend another second waiting around for him to come back to him. With that thought in mind, he heads for the back door, wondering whether or not it’s safe to shift when he was pregnant which, in the end, he decides against. Searching as a human was a little more complicated, but at least he doesn’t risk hurting the baby.
The sun begins setting when Taehyung finally slumps down on his regular tree stump in defeat. He had looked everywhere that he and Jungkook usually went and hadn’t found him anywhere, he was truly starting to believe he had really left him. He pulls his knees up to his chest as he starts crying again. If he really has lost Jungkook he doesn’t know how he’s going to cope with everything. Jungkook was his everything, he needs him in order to keep sane through all of this. The thoughts only make him cry harder, his chest heaving as he hugs his knees tighter.
There’s no telling how long he’s been crying for, but when he feels something nudging at him and he finally looks up he’s surprised to see it’s already dark. He cautiously looks to the side, scared to see what was touching him only to feel his heart leap out of his chest when he meets eyes with the very black wolf he’s been wishing to see this whole time. His body moves on its own as he lunges forward to hug him, sobbing into his fur as he mumbles a string of what he hopes are coherent apologies.
“I’m so sorry, Kookoo. I didn’t mean it, y-you’re the best thing that’s e-ever happened to me, I would never regret saving you that day. I w-was scared, and I know I shouldn’t have taken it o-out on you, I’ll never f-forgive myself for speaking to you like t-that.” Taehyung continues to cry, his hands fisted in Jungkook’s fur as if he’s scared of the wolf running away again. “I love you more than anything,” he mumbles, finally smiling when he feels the younger nuzzling him.
It takes a while for Taehyung to feel grounded enough to pull away from Jungkook, when he does the younger licks him on the cheek which makes him laugh shakily. Jungkook motions towards the cabin clearly telling him that they should head back home, it was dark and cold out in the forest after all. The walk is silent, the only thing heard being Taehyung’s quiet sniffles. It’s a relief when they get back home, Jungkook shifting as soon as they walked back in and Taehyung throwing himself into his arms, not even taking a second to care that he was naked.
“I’m sorry I left.” Jungkook sighs, holding Taehyung close to him.
“No, don’t you dare apologise. I was an absolute ass, you didn’t deserve a single word that I said. I pushed you away, you had every right to leave.”
“You were scared, Tae. Hell, I’m scared too, I don’t know the first thing about being a dad.”
“But you didn’t show it, you handled it way better than me.” Taehyung mumbles, refusing to detach himself from the younger.
“Well I’m not the one actually carrying the baby.” Jungkook laughs, soothingly rubbing his hand across Taehyung’s back.
“I’m happy, now I’ve had time to come to terms with everything that is.”
“Yeah, this baby sharing both of our DNA, it’s a blessing.” Taehyung smiles brightly as he pulls back enough to look at Jungkook, showing him he truly meant it.
“It really is.” Jungkook agrees, matching the smile before leaning forward to capture Taehyung’s lips.
“I meant it in the forest when I told you I love you more than anything, you know that, right?”
Jungkook nods, happy that everything wasn’t destroyed. “I love you more than anything as well.”
Sure, they definitely were not ready to bring a baby into their lives, but that doesn’t mean they won’t love them with every fibre of their beings. The baby truly was a blessing, and now the shock had worn off they can only feel excitement for what was to come.
