Man's Best Friend | Taekook

☾ 24 ☾

Growing up Taehyung always knew he wanted a family, a warm and happiness filled house surrounded by nothing but love is something he craved, something that filled the stories he used to write during his early teenage years. Now that he’s living it he has to pinch himself to make sure he’s not dreaming, it’s everything he had ever wanted and more.

Taehyung and Jungkook were natural parents, the nerves and worries of taking care of their newborn twins completely vanished when they were finally with them. It was strange how they knew exactly what to do, slipping into a new routine as if they weren’t first-time parents at all. It gave them a new sense of love and worth, and when Jungkook’s mother, Namjoon and Jin had to leave to return to their pack, the couple had no doubts in their minds that they would be okay by themselves.

The calmness was down to the twins being the easiest babies possible in existence. They were sleeping through the night once they hit one month old, never fussing when they were being changed or dressed, always smiling when they went for their nighttime baths, they really were the most perfect little angels ever to grace the Earth.

Even when they hit 5 months old and begun teething they were still not even close to as bad as Taehyung was expecting them to be, having the odd cry and whine whenever the pain was too much for them but often chewing on the teething toys that were bought for them. When the twins hit 6 months old they couldn’t imagine a time without them, nothing mattering apart from the little family they had formed inside their cosy cabin in the woods.

Taehyung woke up one night feeling strangely cold, he felt around the bed in his half-asleep daze but couldn’t feel anything but empty, cold sheets beside him. His eyes opened in panic, shooting up in bed as he tries desperately to figure out where Jungkook had gone in the middle of the night. He calmed down when he started to wake up more, sniffling slightly as he slipped out of bed and padded in the direction that he could smell his mates' scent. He smiled when he found him sitting in the nursery with Mia in his arms, slightly rocking the little baby whilst he softly sang to her. Jungkook’s voice has always been one of Taehyung’s favourite things about him, the angelic singing voice that could soothe him and the babies in seconds making it hard not to fall completely in love with.

“You should’ve woke me, I didn’t even hear her crying.” Taehyung yawns as he leans against the door frame.

“You were sound asleep as if I would ever disturb you. Besides, I handled it. She has a new tooth coming through, almost woke Jungwoo up with the amount of screaming she was doing,” Jungkook laughs quietly.

“Poor little angel,” Taehyung sighs, making his way towards Jungkook so he could carefully run a hand over Mia’s head.

“She seems fine now, I’ll put her back to bed and meet you back in our own bed in a second.”

“Promise you won’t be long?” Taehyung says, not liking it one bit when he’s not able to snuggle against the younger. His inner wolf hates being apart from his mate, only if he is just in the next room.

“Promise, pup.”

Taehyung nods, satisfied with the answer as he bends over to give Mia a quick kiss and then leaves the room to head back to bed. He shuffles back under the covers, his eyes trained on the door as he waits for Jungkook to return. True to his word, the younger doesn’t take long and is appearing in the doorway before Taehyung knows it.

“You were seriously staring at the door waiting for me?” Jungkook teases as he crosses the room, not even being able to fully position himself back into bed before he’s getting an armful of Taehyung.

“You know how needy I am, especially after giving birth.”

“You gave birth six months ago…”

“And? I’m a mother now, that makes me needy.”

"As if you weren't already needy before the babies," Jungkook laughs at the elder, repositioning the both of them so that he was comfortable enough to fall back to sleep. “Get some sleep, it’s not long before we have to be up again.”

Taehyung hums as he buries his face further into the younger’s chest, inhaling his scent and sighing in content. “I love you, Kookoo.”

“I love you too, pup.”

The next afternoon throws a shade of grey onto their bright, happy family portrait. The twins were taking their afternoon nap, Taehyung and Jungkook laying on the sofa as they enjoy some alone time when Jungkook suddenly catches a smell which he hoped he would never smell again. He finds himself growling, the rumbling sound causing Taehyung to jump in his arms.

“Why are you growling? What’s wrong?” Taehyung asks, spinning around in Jungkook’s arms so he could properly look at him.

“Your so-called ‘best friend’, that’s what’s wrong.”

“What?”

Jungkook gets up off of the sofa, his eyes growing darker as he makes his way towards the door. Taehyung scrambles after him, grabbing his arm to stop him from doing anything stupid. He was still confused about what was going on, but if Jimin really was there he obviously didn’t want Jungkook attacking him.

“Kookoo, Chim hasn’t visited in almost a year so why would he be here now?” Taehyung asks, ignoring the fact he now could smell a usual scent as well which he assumes belongs to Jimin.

“I don’t know, but I’m not going to let him hurt our family,” Jungkook says in a growl, his eyes flashing red as the scent grows closer.

Taehyung freezes up when he remembers the babies, how the hell was he going to explain them to Jimin without telling him all the crazy things that have happened to him over the last year? Would he even understand it all if he did or would he just think he’s more insane than he did before?

“You need to calm down, if you go out there with red eyes whilst growling at him you’re just going to make everything worse.”

“All he does when he comes here is make you miserable, you just want me to allow that to happen? I don’t want him anywhere near you or the twins.”

With a sigh, Taehyung pulls Jungkook towards him by the grip he had on his arm. Surprisingly Jungkook complies to the action, allowing himself to be dragged closer to the elder as he tries to calm himself down. “Do you trust me?”

“Of course I do, you know I do. More than anything.” Jungkook says, finally without the growl lacing his tone.

“Then go and sit with Mia and Jungwoo, I’ll find out what Jimin is here for.”

“But-“

“You said you trusted me, yeah? So let me do this.”

Jungkook takes a deep breath before agreeing, every instinct within him screaming at him not to leave the room. “Just know I can hear everything that’s going on, alpha hearing and all. The first sign of him saying something I don’t like and I’m intervening.”

“Yeah, yeah. Just try and keep the babies quiet, you know what happens when I hear them crying.”

“That just makes me more reluctant to leave you alone with him.”

“Just hush it and go.” Taehyung pushes Jungkook towards the nursery, and with one last warning glare, he disappears down the hall.

When the knock sounds on the door Taehyung couldn’t believe this was actually happening. With a groan he makes his way back towards the front door, putting on his best fake smile before opening it up and coming face to face with someone he had no idea how he was meant to feel about anymore after their last encounter.

“Taetae!” Jimin squeals with a wide smile. “I was so scared you didn’t live here anymore, but your mom said you called her last month for a catch-up and apparently you didn’t mention a move so I knew I just had to come for a visit!”

“Seriously?” Taehyung finds himself saying, still not moving to the side to invite the other inside.

“I know why we haven’t spoken in so long, but I miss you a lot. I’m so annoyed with myself about how I treated you with my first two visits, I should’ve gone about it in a better way than just outright accusing you of being insane. I also know that I should’ve said all this earlier, but I’ve been so scared that you despise me so I didn’t want to just drop by.”

“Yet you’re just dropping by now?”

“Well, I didn’t have any other way of contacting you! But I saw your new book made it onto the yearly best seller list and I felt so proud that you managed to achieve such an amazing thing for the second time in your career and then I couldn’t stop thinking about how much I missed you. I re-read your book in an attempt to feel closer to you but it didn’t work…”

“You know how I managed to write such a good book? With the support from Jungkook. You know, the guy you called ‘weird’ during your last amazing visit.” Taehyung says, the frustration finally getting to him.

Jimin sadly sighs, “I only said that because I was worried. I actually think he seemed like an okay guy, he really did seem to make you happy.”

“He still does.”

“And I’m happy for you, I really am.” Jimin looks down at the floor awkwardly once he sees Taehyung still guarding the door, not showing any signs of buying his apology. “Tae, I love you. We’ve been besties for so long, all I want is for us to be like we were before you moved here.”

“You’re not going to say I’m crazy? Convince me to speak to your uncle? Insult my living conditions?”

“I swear. No judgment, I just want a good old catch up.”

Taehyung thinks for a second before stepping aside to allow Jimin to enter, still a little apprehensive but genuinely seeing that the other was trying to make peace. There's a happy little squeal as he enters, allowing himself to head straight to the living area to sit down on the sofa.

“So, a brief recap of my year, I was promoted at work, I’m now the head of my department! And Yoongi proposed to me at Christmas, I swear I’ve never sobbed so hard in my life. I tried calling you hoping that you would answer but you didn’t… but I’m telling you now, so I’m still happy.” Jimin smiles at Taehyung, watching him as he awkwardly sits down in the chair across from him.

“That’s amazing, Chim. I’m glad you’re happy.” Taehyung tightly smiles back.

“What’s been happening with you? I mean, apart from releasing your second, absolutely amazing book.”

“Uh- nothing really, same old you know.”

“Same old? You’re telling me that nothing has been happening with you?”

Taehyung shrugs, not wanting to actually let on about everything that has happened to him. Silence fills the room, neither of the men knowing what to say to each other. It’s not until Taehyung awkwardly scratches the back of his neck that Jimin breaks the silence, the movement shifting the hoodie he was wearing and exposing the still prominent scar in the crook of his neck.

“Is that a bite mark?” Jimin voices out, his eyes narrowing as he tries to get a better look.

“No, of course not.” Taehyung quickly answers, readjusting his clothing to cover the mark back over.

“Then what is it?”

“I thought this was meant to be a ‘catch up’, not a grilling.”

Jimin instantly quietens himself, not wanting this visit to go exactly like the others although he was still suspicious about the scar. “You’re wearing a ring?” He says instead, putting his attention onto the gold band around Taehyung’s finger. “Are you and Jungkook engaged?”

“Married, kind of. Not legally, but in our minds we are.” Taehyung attempts to explain, leaving out the part where he and Jungkook can never truly be legally married.

“You weren’t going to tell me something as huge as that?”

“It’s personal, I haven’t even told my own parents about it.”

“But I’m your best friend… I still am, right?” Jimin says in a small voice, the sadness within him only growing by the second. He knows the answer when Taehyung looks at him, he almost doesn’t want to hear it when the other opens his mouth to speak.

But before Taehyung could actually speak he’s interrupted by the small sound of a baby crying in the other room. Jimin jumps at the sound, his eyes confusedly flicking around the room in some attempt to work out what was happening before he finds them meeting Taehyung’s again. When he does, he’s shocked a what he sees. Taehyung’s eyes were shining blue back at him, and with an awkward cough, he quickly looks away.

“Your eyes…”

“What about them?” Taehyung tries to play dumb, desperately trying to block out the sound of one of his babies crying to push away his omega instincts. But he already knows he’s messed up, Jimin had already clearly seen.

“They were blue… and is that a baby crying? You have a baby?”

“I uh- well you see that, uh- It’s not what it looks like.” Taehyung stumbles around his words, not knowing what he could possibly say to make any of this better. He shouldn’t have invited Jimin in, that fact is clearer than day right now.

“Jimin, hi.” Jungkook’s voice finally sounds through the room, the younger male strutting into the space practically oozing confidence with Jungwoo babbling sweetly in his arms. The whole thing should ease Taehyung, but instead, it only makes him panic more because he knows under that smile Jungkook is a boiling pot full of anger.

Jimin looks up, his mouth hanging open in confusion as he stares at Jungkook sitting on the opposite end of the sofa. “That’s a baby, how the hell do you have a baby?”

“Jungkook was in another relationship before we got together, you know how accidents happen. The mother didn’t want the babies so we said we’d take them in, they’re his blood after all.” Taehyung fakes a smile as he quickly makes up his story, the lie feeling like acid inside his stomach. He hated pretending that he wasn’t the one who brought them into this world, but for the protection of his family, he’s willing to pretend.

“Them?”

“Uh- yeah. We had twins- I mean, the other woman had twins.”

Jimin furrows his brows as he nods, but he can’t help but smile when Jungwoo reaches out to him in search of some attention.“Well, that explains the baby, but that doesn’t tell me when your eyes went blue when you heard him crying.”

“It’s the lighting in here, makes you see things. The other day I could’ve sworn I saw three babies instead of two, right Kookoo?”

“Yeah, we’re forever seeing things in here.” Jungkook backs up the story, but Jimin was less than convinced.

“You’re lying to me, Tae.” Jimin goes back to frowning. “Where’s the wolf anyway? Don’t tell me you allow it around the babies.”

“Is it really any of your business if we do?” Jungkook hisses at him, the anger finally spilling over.

There's an awkward, angry glaring match between Jungkook and Jimin which Taehyung has no idea how to stop. Thankfully he doesn’t have to and Mia starts crying instead, causing Jimin to instantly focus his gaze back onto Taehyung.

“See! Your eyes are blue, I’m not seeing things!” Jimin points accusingly, and Taehyung knows there's no way out of this now. “What the hell kind of voodoo shit have you got going on in here?!”

“Please don’t swear around our son, he’s at the age where he’ll start speaking any day and I really don’t want his first word being a nasty one,” Taehyung sighs.

“I’m sorry. But you better start explaining before I seriously freak out.”

“Can you go and calm Mia, please?” Taehyung says to Jungkook, who simply gives him a disbelieving look back.

“As if I’m leaving you alone.”

“She needs you more than I do right now, please Kookoo.”

Jungkook tenses his jaw, he knows Taehyung is right but that doesn’t mean he wants to leave him alone with Jimin. With a sigh, he stands, handing Jungwoo over to the elder before leaving the room, but not without throwing Jimin yet another threatening glare.

“This is Jungwoo,” Taehyung starts with, bouncing the little boy on his leg as his eyes meet Jimin’s. “He’s mine and Jungkook’s baby, as is Mia.”

“Yeah, Jungkook knocked up some girl and you both took them in, we’ve established this.”

“That was a lie. They’re our babies, as in biologically ours, I’m the one who carried and gave birth to them.”

“If you’re trying to be funny then It’s not working,” Jimin scowls, although his expressions changes to one of pure confusion and disbelief when he sees that there was in no way that Taehyung was joking. “How? Like- seriously, how? You’re a man… right?”

Taehyung sighs deeply, knowing he was going to have to start giving all the answers that he didn't want to tell anyone else. “Jungkook is not human, neither am I anymore. That wolf I nursed back to health and continued living with even after he was better? That’s Jungkook.”

“Jungkook’s a wolf?”

“Werewolf. Half man, half wolf, able to shift between the two as he pleases.”

“And now you’re telling me that you’re that too?”

“Yeah. Jungkook and I are mates, this bite that you saw earlier is proof that we’ve sealed our bond.” Taehyung pulls the collar of his hoodie to the side to once again reveal the scar. “We didn’t know it would change me, but when the full moon hit I ended up turning into a werewolf as well.”

“So you can change into a wolf too?” Jimin asks, his head spinning with the amount of crazy information he was being loaded up with.

“Well, yeah. I don’t do it that much anymore, but as soon as the twins can shift as well I’ll start spending more time in my wolf form.”

Jimin nods, not really knowing why he was nodding but doing the action anyway. He was in a state of disbelief, completely and utterly not expecting any of the words that have ended up being spoken to him. Jungkook walks back into the room when he hears nothing but silence, clearly panicked about what might be happening.

“I just, I can’t believe any of this… please say sike or something.”

“I’m sure Jungkook wouldn’t mind shifting if you wanted proof.”

“Really, Tae?” Jungkook says with a sigh, he’s annoyed enough that they have to reveal their secret to Jimin let alone actually have to prove it to him.

“You want to protect us, right? Don’t you always say that you can do that better in wolf form?”

Jungkook rolls his eyes, standing up once again before placing Mia down on the floor to play around with her toys. He leaves the room with a huff, Taehyung fondly smiling at him as he goes, completely forgetting about the other shocked person in the room.

“Does that mean if I do anything bad he’ll kill me?” Jimin says, total fear lacing his tone.

“Well, I’ve never thought of Kookoo being a killer, but I’m sure if you did anything to threaten his family then he wouldn’t be too kind about it. But, you wouldn’t do that, would you?” Taehyung answers back, smiling at Jimin as he places Jungwoo next to his sister on the floor.

Jimin observes the two babies, finding himself giggling softly whilst he watches them gurgling happily as they play around with toys around them. “They’re adorable,” he says, completely ignoring Taehyung’s earlier question.

“They are. I think they both look way more like Jungkook than they look like me, that probably adds to the cuteness.”

“They both have your nose, and Mia already has the same smile as you.”

“You think?” Taehyung smiles, Jungkook has always said the exact same to him but he just thought he was trying to be encouraging. Hearing it confirmed by another person makes him feel warm inside, even if he couldn’t see the resemblance he’s happy that others do.

“Yeah,” Jimin smiles back.

The atmosphere was nice for a second, that was until a large black wolf enters the room and completely flips the mood around. Jimin almost jumps out of his skin from the sight, definitely still threatened by the sight of him, it’s not every day you come face to face with such a large, scary looking animal. Jungkook settles next to the armchair that Taehyung was seated in, sitting down beside the elder’s feet. He stares at Jimin with an intense gaze, still trying to threaten him.

“That’s Jungkook?” Jimin asks, feeling stupid once the words leave his mouth.

“Yep, this is my Kookoo.” Taehyung grins, fondly scratching behind the wolf’s ears to stop him from purposely scaring Jimin. It always works, Jungkook’s tail never failing to wag happily when Taehyung shows him any kind of affection.

“Aren’t you worried that the babies will be scared of him? I was scared when I first saw him- hell, I still am terrified.”

“Well-“ Taehyung cuts himself off, seeing he didn’t have to answer as both of the babies crawl across the floor to be closer to their parents.

Jungkook lays down as they approach, placing his head on his front paws as Mia and Jungwoo pat him and play around with his fur. The sight never fails to make Taehyung want to sob with happiness, the amount of affection shown was enough to make anyone want to.

“They know it’s their dad, must be smell or natural instincts but they’ve always known. I was a little annoyed when he first showed his wolf form to them a couple of weeks ago, although I knew they would have to see him like this sooner or later. But all they did was giggle and did what they’re doing now, they adore him whether he’s a wolf or a human just like I do.” Taehyung explains.

“This is all so strange. Cute seeing him and the babies like this, but still strange.”

“You can’t tell anyone, Chim. Not even Yoongi. If word gets out about what we are people won’t understand, we won’t be able to live normally.”

There’s yet more silence as Jimin thinks about things, his eyes flicking down to watch the twins with Jungkook on the floor before he looks back up to his best friend’s pleading expression. All he’s ever wanted was the best for Taehyung, to know he’s safe and happy when he’s out here and they’re not able to contact each other constantly. Now he knows what’s really happening he has no doubt in his mind that he is more safe and happy than he would’ve ever wanted for him, and that is something he would never ruin.

“I won’t tell anyone. But on one condition.”

“Anything, literally anything.”

“You start calling me at least twice a week, and I’m allowed to visit to see the twins at least once a month.”

Taehyung laughs, nodding frantically as he agrees to the conditions. “Thank you, Chim.”

“Oh, and never show me your wolf form, I don’t think I’ll be able to handle knowing that my best friend is an animal.”

“Half animal.”

“Still, it’s weird.”

“Deal then,” Taehyung smiles widely, complete relief taking over him. He’s happy he’s still able to put his trust into Jimin even after all they’ve been through over the past year. He can only hope that he stays true to his word, this secret is something that could threaten their entire lives and there’s no telling what would happen if it was to get out.
