Man's Best Friend | Taekook

☾ 26 ☾

The week following Jimin’s visit has Taehyung doing nothing but thinking. Thinking about his old life, how much he missed spending time with his parents and grandparents, how much talking over the phone with people just wasn’t the same as actually being able to speak to them face to face. It was amazing to finally have contact with his best friend again, but that didn’t ease the ache in his heart that he had from missing the rest of his family so much.

As much as he tries to hide what he’s feeling he knows that Jungkook is picking up on the fact that something was bothering him, he never could get away with hiding anything from the younger. It’s not that Taehyung didn’t want to be honest with him, but he knows that talking about the situation won’t help him at all. If anything, he thinks discussing the topic will only make him sadder.

That doesn’t stop Jungkook from asking him what's on his mind. Seeing the elder not being his normal, cheerful self was finally getting too much for him and he couldn’t help but want to find out what was wrong. “Are you going to tell me why you’ve been so sad or am I just going to have to guess?” The younger asks one night after they’ve put the twins to bed, the two of them snuggled up in their own bed ready to fall asleep.

“I’m not sad, why would you think that?” Taehyung tries to sound confused, but he knows that he cannot fool Jungkook.

Jungkook doesn’t reply, thinking the question answers itself. They lie there in silence for a while before Taehyung finally decides to just tell Jungkook what was bothering him since he knows the situation isn’t going to be dropped so easily. “Okay fine, I’ve just been thinking about something Jimin said during his visit last week…”

“What did he say? Do I need to prepare to attack him next time he comes over?”

“No, it’s nothing bad. He just asked if I ever thought about bringing the twins to meet my parents, and its obvious that we can’t but it just makes me sad to think about them never knowing my side of the family.” Taehyung sighs.

“Would a short visit really be that bad, though?” Jungkook questions, making Taehyung shuffle away from him in order to give him a look of disbelief.

“Are you crazy? We couldn’t even keep the whole werewolf thing away from Jimin for ten minutes before I had to spill the whole story to him!”

“That’s only because we weren’t prepared for him to visit, he caught us off guard so we didn’t have time to try and hide all the strange signs. When he first visited he didn’t know there was anything non-human about me.”

“Are you forgetting the fact he said you were ‘weird’?” Taehyung raises an eyebrow.

“That’s only because of how protective and passive aggressive I was being, and I was only like that because he brought round that other dick to steal you away from me.” Jungkook frowns at the memories causing the elder to laugh lightly at him, finally returning back to his previous position of being snuggled up.

“What about my eyes? That’s the thing that exposed us to Jimin, I can’t have them just randomly changing to blue in front of my parents.”

Jungkook hums, taking a while to think about everything. Sure, it was a risk, but it was a risk he was willing to take if that meant that Taehyung would be truly happy again. “The twins hardly cry anymore, we just have to make sure they’re not stealing toys from each other and we’ll be fine. Plus if you’re in the room with them you can tell if they’re going to start crying so you can hide your eyes, right?”

“It’s too risky, Kookoo. One wrong move and that’s another two people we have to put our faith into. I know my parents love me but that doesn’t mean they’ll understand all of this, it’s too big of a chance to take for only a small bit of happiness.” Taehyung mumbles as he plays with the hem of Jungkook’s shirt, trying to convince himself of his own words.

“But it’s not only a small bit of happiness for you, I can tell it means much more than that.”

Taehyung laughs, “I really can’t hide anything from you, huh?”

“Nope,” Jungkook smiles triumphantly. “How about this, you call your parents and explain how you fell in love with the most amazing guy you’ve ever met and since we knew it was love right away we decided to get married and adopt some amazing babies. See how they react to you telling them all that, and if it’s positive then we’ll go round for dinner one night.”

“Fine, I’ll tell them.” Taehyung agrees as he yawns, fatigue finally taking over him. He snuggles more into Jungkook’s side before sleepily mumbling, “‘most amazing guy I’ve ever met’, maybe I’ll leave that part out.”

“Then you’ll be leaving out some of the truth.”

“Will I? Someone’s getting a little cocky.”

Taehyung can tell Jungkook was pouting without even being able to see his face making him let out a tired laugh. “I was kidding, I don’t think the universe could’ve found me a more perfect match if it tried.” He gives the younger a small, affectionate pat on the chest before allowing himself to slip into sleep.

“Me too,” Jungkook whispers, knowing full well that Taehyung couldn’t hear him. But by seeing the small smile that makes its way onto the elder’s face, he thinks that maybe he could.

After lunch the next day Taehyung decides to go to his ‘signal spot’ and call his mom, leaving Jungkook back at home to look after the twins. He was nervous, rightfully so, he knows his parents will be disappointed that he didn’t tell him about such a massive part of his life sooner. But he knew there was no way he could’ve told them about Jungkook without them begging to meet him, and with everything that happened so quickly after they met and sealed their bond, there was definitely no safe way of doing that.

When he dials the number and brings his phone to his ear he can tell his hands are shaking, his stomach churning with nerves as he listens to the dialling tone drag on. His heart stops when his mom finally picks up, his mouth going dry as he forgets that he actually has to reply to her.

“Tae, sweetie? Are you there?”

“Uh- yeah- h-hi, mom…” Taehyung answers, the fear clear in his tone.

“Are you okay? You sound scared, do I need to call the police for help?” His mother panics and Taehyung can tell she’s frantically moving around on the other end of the line.

“No, mom. I’m fine, no need to call the police.” Taehyung shakily laughs, taking a deep breath to compose himself before continuing. “I need to tell you something, and I know you’re going to be sad that I’ve been keeping it from you but you have to understand why I did…”

“Oh my, you’re not sick are you? Please do not tell me you’re dying.”

“I’m not dying, you can relax, it’s nothing like that. I’m just… married...”

“You’re married?”

“I, uh- yeah, kind of? I met a guy when I moved here, his name is Jungkook. I never knew I could love someone so much until I met him, so I knew that it was the right thing for me.” Taehyung tries to explain, the eery silence through the phone only making him more nervous to hear his mother’s reply.

“You got married without your father and I being there? I can understand if you didn’t want a big ceremony, but you didn’t even tell us that you met someone…”

“I know I didn’t, and I really am sorry for hiding all of this. I was just scared that you would tell me I’m taking everything too fast, but he really is my soulmate and that’s why it happened so quickly.”

Taehyung’s mother clearly didn’t know just how true those words were, but it seems to be enough to convince her to not give her son a lecture about the importance of waiting before making such a big decision. “I understand, I just wish you would’ve told me.”

“I am now though,” Taehyung says, hoping it was enough to lighten the mood.

“I suppose. So, now that you have can we meet him?”

“Uh- there’s a little bit more I need to tell you before that happens…”

“More? Taehyung, seriously-“

“Just hear me out, okay? You know how much I’ve always dreamed of having a family, and Jungkook and I thought, why wait? So…”

“You have a child?!”

Taehyung winces at the noise, bringing the phone away from his ear before his mother really did destroy his eardrum. “Well we saw that two babies needed a home, and we couldn’t resist adopting them.”

“Two?! Oh my goodness, Taehyung. Are you trying to give me a heart attack?!”

“I know it’s a lot, and if you need a couple of days to process everything then I can stop calling-“

“No, no don’t do that. It’s a lot, yes, but if you’re happy then that’s all I care about.”

“So you’re not disappointed that I kept all this from you?”

His mother sighs, “I’m dissapointed, yes. But as I said, as long as you’re happy then I can get over it. I still want to meet Jungkook, and my newly found grandchildren if you’re willing to come and pay your parents a visit after all this time.”

“I’ll have to talk to Jungkook, but I do want to come and visit you both.”

“Well just call me when you have and we’ll arrange something.” His mother says before falling into silence, both of them not knowing how to finish the call after all that was revealed. “I miss you, Tae. But I’m happy you’re not all alone out there, that thought can finally help me sleep better at night.”

Taehyung smiles, the weight on his shoulders finally feeling lighter. “I miss you too, mom. I promise I’ll come and visit soon.”

They say their goodbyes after that, and Taehyung can’t help but feel relieved after it’s over. The nerves about actually visiting his parents are still there, but now he feels a hint of excitement about showing off his family. If Jungkook thinks it will all be okay then he has faith as well. After all, what’s the worst that could possibly happen?
