Man's Best Friend | Taekook

☾ 30 ☾

When Taehyung wakes up the next morning he hopes he’ll find out that everything was just a nightmare, that he’ll open his eyes and be snuggled up in bed tucked warmly beside Jungkook. But, he knows that was too much to ask.

Taehyung opens his eyes, feeling a bit disorientated since he’s never woken up in wolf form before. His head still felt heavy, his eyes sore from the constant crying he did the day before. A sense of fear grows within him, the fear that he might turn to his side and find Jungkook had died whilst he had been asleep. The pit of emptiness inside his heart didn’t help reduce the fear, only made him more reluctant to check on his mate laying beside him.

Thankfully, before Taehyung can even turn he feels the soft rise and fall of Jungkook’s side against his own which tells him he’s still alive. He thanks the universe what he thinks is close to a million times before shifting around to face the younger, a small exhale of air leaving his nose as he does. Jungkook’s eyes were still closed, body unmoving still in the same position Taehyung found him in the day before. It wasn’t ideal, but as long as he was still breathing Taehyung was grateful.

“Ah, you’re awake!” Jimin’s voice rings through the living area causing Taehyung to quickly snap his head around to face him. “I just got the twins dressed, they’re asking for you and Jungkook... I didn’t tell them anything, and I don’t know if you want me to bring them some breakfast-”

Jimin stops speaking as soon as he sees Taehyung stand, his body still as he watches the wolf make his way towards him. Taehyung lightly nudges his hip as he walks past to get to his bedroom, a little action to say thank you that he hopes that Jimin can read.

The matter of what he’s going to tell the twins is all Taehyung can think about as he shifts and dresses into some comfy clothes. What could he possibly tell them that will make them understand? Being a writer he always thinks he should be good with words, that’s why it always astonished him that Jungkook was always much better with them than he was. He always knows what to say, how to make the twins and even Taehyung himself calm down in an instant. Another thing that Taehyung won’t be able to live without if he was to lose him.

Mia and Jungwoo squeal happily when they see Taehyung enter their room, both of them clumsily getting into a standing position and stumbling over to him for a hug. It makes Taehyung feel better for a second until Jungwoo pulls away and asks him the question he had been dreading answering.

“Where daddy?”

“Daddy is... uh-” Taehyung chews his lip in thought, feeling sick as he thinks back to everything that happened yesterday. “Daddy’s hurt, but he’ll be okay. He’s strong, right?”

“Wan’ see daddy,” Mia whines, her bottom lip trembling as she looks up to Taehyung.

“You can see him as soon as he’s awake, okay? I’m sure he’ll want a lot of snuggles once he comes back to us.” Taehyung smiles the brightest smile he could possibly show, a small weight lifting from his shoulders when the twins return it. “Uncle Jiminie will bring you some food soon, what do you want to eat?”

“Bacon!” Mia and Jungwoo both shout in unison causing Taehyung to laugh softly at them.

With a kiss to both of their foreheads, Taehyung leaves the room, ready to cook breakfast for his children when he’s met with the smell of delicious food. Surprisingly there was already food on the table, a smiling Jimin neatly plating as he hums.

“Oh, you’re human again... thank God for that,” Jimin whispers the last part, hoping Taehyung doesn’t hear. “I figured you shouldn’t be the one cooking so I did it for you, I hope that’s okay.”

Taehyung smiles as he gives Jimin a tight side hug, squeezing his best friend so hard he starts whining from the pain of it. “Of course it’s okay, Chim. You’re the best, I don’t know what I’d do without you here.”

“Well if you keep squeezing me I might have to rethink my decision to help you,” Jimin jokes, although he adds a quick ‘only kidding’ to the end when he sees a pout form on Taehyung’s face. “Did you tell the twins anything?”

“I just told them that Jungkook is hurt, they’re too young to understand anything else. They keep asking to see him though which is killing me inside, I can’t let them see him like this yet I hate keeping them from him.” Taehyung sighs and he kneels down on the carpet beside Jungkook, his hand subconsciously reaching over him to run his fingers through the fur of his mane.

“You can’t keep them locked in that room forever though, Tae. It’s not good for them.”

“They’re safer in there, at least until we know where the hell Jaehyun is. Kookoo will wake up soon anyway, I know he will. He’s too stubborn to let this be the end of him.”

Both of them fall into silence, the sound of the bacon sizzling in the pan beside Jimin was the only noise that filled the room. Taehyung focuses his attention on Jungkook, his fingers slowing down as he sadly looks at his mate’s unconscious face. “Besides, he promised he would be with me until the end,” he whispers, the words feeling thick on his tongue.

As much as he wants to believe the words, he can’t help the feeling of doubt that pounds through his entire body. But he needs to stay hopeful. Hope really is the only thing keeping him going right now, he can’t afford to let that go.

It’s late that night, although time really did mean nothing to Taehyung anymore. The moon was illuminating the dark room, a silence so heavy it felt almost crushing as Jimin was away putting the twins to bed. Taehyung had barely moved all day, only to change to bandages around his mates wound and to say a quick goodnight to the twins before darting back to where Jungkook laid. All of his pleas for Jungkook to wake up seemed to go unanswered, but that did not mean that Taehyung was giving up begging the universe for him to come back.

Taehyung looks towards the window, the site of the full moon sitting high in the sky catching his attention. The light falling from it was almost blinding, but still, he could not take his gaze off of its beauty. Then he remembers, his mind recalling the night in which he became a werewolf. Jungkook had told him how powerful the full moon was to them, how werewolves felt stronger when it was looming over them. And maybe, just maybe it was the silver lining he needed.

Closing his eyes, Taehyung takes in a deep breath. He felt stupid for making a wish on the moon, but for Jungkook he didn’t mind feeling stupid at all, not even for a second. So he pleads some more, wishing for his mate to come back to him. He needs him to survive, and he hopes that somehow the moon has the power to notice that.

“Tae?” Jimin’s voice snaps him out of his trance, startling the younger slightly. “Sorry, I didn’t mean to scare you.”

“No, it’s fine. I was just uh-” Taehyung stops talking as he gaze falls back onto Jungkook, a soft sigh escaping his lips when he sees no change in his state. “Never mind,” he finishes, the feeling of defeat clear within his tone.

“Are you gonna wolf it up again tonight, or?”

“Please don’t refer to shifting as ‘wolf it up’,” Taehyung laughs lightly. “But yes I am, I don’t think I’ll be able to sleep if I’m not beside him.”

Jimin nods, motioning for Taehyung to leave the room and do whatever he had to. Taehyung shoots him a weak smile before shakily rising to his feet and padding out of the room, little to no energy left within him.

He should’ve known it was stupid to rely on the moon to bring Jungkook back to him. The last ray of hope he has seems to be slipping from him, and he doesn’t know how much longer he’ll be able to hold onto it.

Waking up as a wolf is something that Taehyung doesn’t think he’ll ever be able to get used to, but regardless it was the least of his worries at the moment. He blows a puff of air through his nose, his eyes still closed as he shifts closer to Jungkook’s warmth beside him. That’s when it happens, a feeling of a slight jolt and a soft hiss ringing through his mind.

At first, he thinks he might’ve imagined it, maybe his desperation really has gotten to the point where he’s begun imagining things. So he ignores it, relaxing his head into his front paws as he tries to get a couple more moments of peace before he faces the world.

“Morning, Kookoo,” he softly says in his mind, hoping that Jungkook is able to hear it even in his unconscious state.

“Morning, pup,” a weak voice replies.

Taehyung’s eyes shoot open, there’s no way he imagined that. “Kookoo?!”

The feeling of complete relief that runs through his body when Jungkook’s eyes squint open to look up at him is a feeling he’ll never forget, it was definitely up there with his top moments of bonding with Jungkook and holding his babies for the first time. Jungkook simply groans in response, but it was enough for Taehyung to be completely happy.

“You came back to me,” Taehyung shakily says before softly licking Jungkook’s cheek, giving him one of his famous ‘wolf kisses’.

“Of course I did, I promised.”

And just like that, Taehyung’s whole world finally felt restored. Maybe relying on the moon for help wasn’t so useless after all.
