Man's Best Friend | Taekook

Jungkook’s voice always sounded like heaven to Taehyung, but it never sounded more heavenly than it did at this moment. His heart was completely filled with joy as soon as he heard those words ring through his mind, and now that he has him back there was not a chance he was going to allow something like this to ever happen again.

“I thought I was going to lose you, I was so scared. Oh my God, I can’t believe you’re actually talking to me... Am I dreaming? I’m not, right?” Taehyung speaks frantically, only stopping to quickly bite at his leg to confirm that he wasn’t in fact dreaming. “Okay I’m not dreaming, that definitely hurt.”

“Calm down, pup,” Jungkook roughly laughs, his eyes falling back shut for a minute before opening them again to look up at his mate.

“You’re telling me to calm down? This is one of the happiest moments of my life! I get to hear you again, see your cute wolf eyes looking up at me... God, I can’t believe this is real. You’re really back,” Taehyung squeals happily.

“Did you doubt I would come back? As if I’d let that dickhead defeat me.”

“Jaehyun.” Taehyung pauses as if he just remembered the reason as to why this whole situation happened in the first place. “Where is he? I haven’t even left the house to look, I’m too scared he’ll be waiting out there just waiting for his chance to do the same to me and take our babies-”

“He’s gone,” Jungkook breathes out.

“We can’t be sure of that, Kookoo. Now he knows what we are he’ll definitely come back, I doubt you’ve scared him off.” Taehyung sighs, his happy mood slowly decreasing now that reality is finally setting in.

Jungkook winces as he struggles to roll onto his stomach, ignoring Taehyung’s protests of him to stay laying on his side. He motions for Taehyung to lay down beside him, nuzzling into his mane as soon as he complied. “Trust me, pup, he’s not coming back.”

“The way you said that scares me...” Taehyung cocks his head as he turns to the younger. “What happened out there?”

“He kept saying all these disgusting things that he was going to do to hurt you, it was driving my alpha instincts crazy. Then he said that he was going to make Mia and Jungwoo ‘nothing but lab rats’ and I just snapped, I saw red and in my wolf form I couldn’t stop myself from attacking him.”

“What did you do to him?” Taehyung asks although he wasn’t certain that he really wanted to know the answer.

“I can’t really remember, but you wouldn’t want to know the details even if I did remember it all. All I know is that he couldn’t have survived it, there’s no way.” Jungkook feels Taehyung tense up when he goes to nuzzle him again causing him to pull away in confusion. “What’s wrong?”

“You just told me you killed my best friends cousin and you really have to ask what’s wrong?”

“He was going to kill us both, I had to do it to protect our family.”

Taehyung sighs, feeling a mixture of emotions rushing through his body. “I know, but- It’s murder, Kookoo... what if someone finds out? His family is going to know he’s missing, and what if he told anyone he was coming here before he left? What if he had people on his side? They’ll take you away from me, and I’ve only just got you back-”

“Tae, nothing is going to happen. You won’t lose me, I won’t let that happen.”

“His body must be out there though, what if someone finds it?”

“Stop worrying. I felt how stressed you were even when I was out of it, and now I’m awake I can finally tell you to calm down,” Jungkook jokes, nudging the elder with his nose.

Taehyung hums before leaning his head against Jungkook’s, enjoying the warmth he can feel radiating off of his mate. He finally felt at peace, even though the lingering thought of Jaehyun’s body still being out in the woods was playing on his mind. But he couldn’t say he was sad to hear that he was gone, he was more relieved to hear it if anything. That might make him a bad person, but it’s not something he’s going to allow himself to dwell on.

“Jungkook, you’re awake!” Jimin’s voice breaks through the calm silence of the room, both of the wolves instantly looking towards him.

“Jimin’s here?”

“Hmm, yeah. I panicked called him after I stitched you all up, he’s been my salvation since then.”

Jungkook looks back towards Jimin, his eyes softening as he weakly places his head to rest on his front paws. “Tell him I say thanks, I appreciate him helping you and our babies out.”

“I’m sure he’ll love to hear that,” Taehyung laughs lightly.

“Are you two talking to each other? You better not be saying mean things about me,” Jimin dramatically pouts as he sits down on the sofa.

Taehyung shakes his head in amusement at his best friend before turning to lick Jungkook’s cheek. “I’ll go shift, and then I have to change your bandages.”

“Yay, how fun.”

“Oh, how I’ve missed your bratty attitude.”

“I’m not bratty!”

“Sure,” Taehyung laughs as he stands up, quickly padding his way to the bedroom to shift. He had a bounce in his step, all the weight that has built up being lifted straight off of his shoulders.

Of course, they’ll have to deal with the reality of things later. But for now, Taehyung plans to just enjoy having the love of his life back with him.

“Okay, my little munchkins. You can go and see daddy, but you have to promise to not be rough with him OR touch his bandages. He’s still sore, okay?” Taehyung whispers to the twins as he leads them out of their bedroom, one of their little hands in each of his.

“Okie mommy,” Mia says brightly.

Jungwoo was silent, apart from the little excited noises he was making as he tries his hardest to make Taehyung walk to the living area faster. As soon as he gets a sight of his father, the excited noises only grow louder, now with the added delight of Mia joining in.

“Daddy!” The twins squeal, stumbling over to the wolf as soon as Taehyung releases their hands.

Jungkook gives Mia and Jungwoo a small lick on the cheek, something Taehyung let’s slide given the situation. Instead, his heart swells at the sight, seeing how much the twins missed their father was truly heartwarming to him. Having his family back together was the best feeling in the world, and he wouldn’t change it for the world.

With a smile sat proudly on his face, Taehyung heads over to the kitchen area to grab the twins a drink from the fridge. “Glad to have him back?” He startles when Jimin’s voice suddenly sounds behind him, too much in his own little world to acknowledge the sound of his footsteps approaching him.

“More than glad. Something tells me they are too,” Taehyung motions towards the twins. They were both giggling happily as they gently placed kisses on Jungkook’s head, the whole scene like something out of Taehyung’s most beautiful fantasies. “He says thanks, by the way, you know for keeping me sane through all of this.”

“Jungkook thanking me? Today really is one for the history books,” Jimin laughs.

“He respects true friendship when he sees it,” Taehyung laughs as he playfully nudges the other.

“Well, I am honoured.” Jimin places his hand other his heart, slowly breathing in as he looks into the distance in order to stress his point. The sight only makes Taehyung laugh harder, so happy he’s actually able to laugh again.

Once the laughter has died down, the question that Taehyung had dreaded answering is finally brought up. “Did you ask about Jaehyun?” Jimin cautiously says, noting the change in Taehyung’s demeanour after he does.

“Uh... he’s-” Taehyung bites his lip, his eyes dropping to look at his feet instead of his best friend. “He’s dead, Chim.”

“What? How can he be when he injured Jungkook so bad?”

“I guess he did it as a last gush of strength? I don’t know, I wasn’t given the details but Kookoo said there’s no way he would’ve survived whatever he did to him,” Taehyung says in a whisper, making sure the twins couldn’t overhear the conversation.

“But- you said Jungkook wasn’t a killer, you said he was too soft for that!” Jimin hisses quietly.

Taehyung was shocked by the change in Jimin’s mood, sure he wasn’t expecting a positive reaction but he definitely was not expecting this either. “He threatened his family. Our babies were in serious danger, Chim. He’s an alpha, those instincts overtook him and all he could think of was protecting the ones he loves.”

“He murdered my cousin, Tae. How can you defend that?”

“Your cousin was an ass! He was going to kill us both and take our children in to become test subjects!”

“He was all talk, you know that,” Jimin sighs as he buries his head in his hands.

“No, I don’t. He showed up to our home with a weapon, he almost killed my husband!” Taehyung says through gritted teeth, not for a second willing to defend such a vile human. “Why are you so pressed about this? You never even liked him.”

“He’s still family! How the hell am I going to explain this to his parents? I love my Aunt and Uncle, they don’t deserve this.”

“And MY family didn’t deserve to be the target of his psychopathic breakdown. MY children didn’t deserve to be frightened, MY mate didn’t deserve to almost be killed. The only person who got what they deserved was Jaehyun.”

The space between them instantly goes silent, the words strong enough to shut down any sort of argument they were having. Jimin couldn’t deny that what Taehyung said was true, but that didn’t mean he wasn’t affected by the death of his cousin.

“I’m sorry. You’re right, you didn’t deserve this.” Jimin sighs sadly, his face looking worn out as he makes eye contact with Taehyung. “I’m going to go home tonight, but I’ll drop by tomorrow to see how things are if that’s okay.”

“Yeah... thanks, Chim.” Taehyung offers a small smile, trying his best to move on from the conversation beforehand. “I’m sorry too... I know he was family to you, but I can’t-”

“I know, he was a shitty person. I’ll figure out a coverup story, I won’t let anyone know what really happened.”

“You sure?”

“Mm, it’ll be better if it comes from me.” Jimin returns the small smile, stepping forward to hug Taehyung quickly goodbye. “I didn’t mean to get angry with you, it was just the shock of it. But when it comes down to it, I’m glad it was him and not Jungkook.”

Those words meant the world to Taehyung, more than he thinks Jimin will ever know.

Taehyung still shifts that night, the thought of not sleeping beside Jungkook making him feel too sick to even consider it. Even though Jungkook told him he shouldn’t be sleeping on the floor and that the bed was much cosier, Taehyung knew the cosiest place for him was tucked into his mate’s side.

“I heard your little argument with Jimin earlier,” Jungkook quietly says as Taehyung’s carefully making himself comfortable against him.

“Ugh, you and that stupid alpha hearing.”

Jungkook laughs, playfully rolling his eyes since he knows Taehyung can’t slap him for it. “I honestly didn’t think I’d ever be a murderer, I understand if he hates me for it.”

“Chim will never hate you for what you did and don’t you ever think of yourself as a murderer. You’re a hero, you did what you had to do to keep your family safe.” Taehyung tries his best to assure his mate as he nuzzles his nose into his fur, softly inhaling the scent he adores so much. “Nothing you did was bad, Kookoo. You’re still here, you’re still with me and that’s all that matters.”

“I love you, pup, there’s no way I’m ever leaving you.”

“And I love you too, more than anything. Expect our babies, of course, you have to share the same love level as them.”

“That’s something I definitely do not mind doing,” Jungkook chuckles, a wave of happiness running through him once Taehyung’s laughter fills his mind.

The whole situation wasn’t conventional, it wasn’t anything that Taehyung could’ve even dreamed his life shaping up to be. But in the end, he’s glad that he still has the ones who mean the most to him right by his side throughout it all.
