Merry Christmas, Finn

Rachel's Gold Star

Rachel Berry pinned the certificate for her star named Finn Hudson on her bulletin board next to her favorite picture of Barbra. She sat on the edge of her bed as she recalled the conversation she and Finn had had when he gave it too her.

"What's this?" she said taking the paper from him.

"It's your own star," he said beaming.

"You named a star after me?" she asked looking up at him.

"No, I thought about that but then I named it Finn Hudson..." he said quietly, "because there's already a star named Rachel Berry and she's right here on Earth and she's brighter than any of those stars up there. So, I wanted to make sure that whenever she feels lonely, she can look up at the sky and no matter where I am, she can know that I'm looking down on her," Finn said sweetly. Rachel wiped away a tear as she rose from the bed headed toward the door. She screamed when she opened the door because standing there was Finn Hudson.

"Finn! You scared me," she said putting her hand on her chest.

"I'm sorry. I was about to knock when you opened the door," he said with a warm smile.

"Oh, well what are you doing here?" Rachel asked allowing him in her bedroom.

"We're returning that stuff right?"

"Yeah but I thought were were going to meet at the Lima Bean."

"Ok, well we were but I forgot to give you something at school," he said.

"Ok but I don't need anything else. I've got Barbra the pig and my Finn star," she said grabbing his hands. "I'm good," she said looking into his soulful brown eyes.

"Yeah but it's just one more thing," Finn said with a crooked smile. "So you remember earlier I told you that there was already a bright star on Earth named Rachel Berry?"

"I remember."

"Well, here," he said pulling something out of his coat pocket. She was still looking in his eyes when a gold glint caught her eye. Rachel reached out and took the large gold star out of his hand.

"It's..." she began.

"It's you," he said smiling.

"I don't understand."

"Gold stars are you."

"They're my signature," Rachel said smiling.

"Not just that, Rach. Gold stars were made for you," he said. "They didn't mean anything until you started putting them after your name. Until you had every word to every Barbra song ever committed to memory. They didn't mean anything until you decided that being a part of something special makes you special." Rachel just looked down at the shiny gold star tree topper. It looked exactly like the ones she put after her signature.

"What's this for, though?"

"I gave you that Finn Hudson star so that no matter where I am, you'll know I'm looking down on you," Finn said pulling her into his arms. She nodded. "Well, this is the...what's the word? When it's something that represents something but you can actually hold it?"

"Tangible," she answered her head on his chest. She took comfort in the sound of the beating of his heart, since it always beat in time with hers.

"Right. This is the tangible version of the Finn star."

"But why do I need this? I've got the other one," Rachel asked craned her neck to look at him.

"Flip it over," he said smiling brightly. She grinned at him and flipped her the star over in her hand and engraved on the other side of the star was his name. She beamed up at him.

"See, you can only see the other Finn at night. This way, you can take it with you wherever you go and when you feel lonely, or nervous or happy even, you can take this..." Finn said holding the gold star tree topper up. "and you can hold it, right here," he said placing it against her chest. Right next to her heart. "You can tell it all of your feelings and you'll know that no matter where I am, what I'm doing. I'm here for you. Looking out for you. Helping you shine," Finn said as he leaned down and kissed her lips gently. "This star may have my name on it but it's Rachel Berry. The biggest, brightest, most beautiful star out there."

"Thank you," Rachel whispered with a small smile. She brushed her tears away and stood on her tiptoes and kissed him again. "I'm ready to go, now. We can take the iPod and earrings back now," she said stepping away from him and grabbing her coat.

"Wait, promise me something," he said grabbing her hands and interlocking their fingers.

"Promise me that after you get the lead role in your first Broadway show, and you show the world how amazing you are, you'll bring this on stage for the curtain call," he said.

"I promise but why?" she asked.

"So that we share in your defining moment together," he said with a boyish smile.

"But you're gonna be there," she said smiling back.

"Maybe but when you take this star on stage and you'll know that no matter what, no matter where I am, I'm there with you. Shining for you, cheering for you," he said. "I mean what I said. There's already a star on Earth named Rachel Berry and she shines brighter than any those of stars up there but now forever and always, you'll have me to help you prove that it's a fact." She couldn't control the tears anymore. She wrapped her arms around him tightly.

"I love you so much, Finn," she said quietly. "Thank you."

"I love you too," he said holding her close. "You don't have to thank me, Rach. You're the star, the Finn star is just a reminder of how awesome you are."

They stood there like that for a long moment before releasing each other. Finn kissed her lips softly, grabbed her hand and led her from her bedroom.
