When Alec Met Magnus

Chapter Five: Shadowhunters and Museums

So um...its been like four months….haha….oops...Sorry everyone! School started and then play yeah…..I promise there will be malec fluff in this one! And I’ll try and keep the Jace angst to a minimum. No promises though.

Alec answered the phone, brushing a strand of black hair out of his face. “Hello?”

He jumped and held the phone away from his face. Magnus raised an eyebrow, this would be interesting. “What? What are you talking about Iz?”

The famous Izzy. “Its not my fault! stop yelling at me!” Alec’s face was heating up and he looked slightly panicked.

“Because! Its not fair! She barely knows him! I’ve known him 10 years!” Alec shouted into the phone.

Oh. OH! Magnus’s eyes widened with the sudden realization. There was somebody else. Somebody who it could never happen with. Thats why he had been so distracted during dinner. So there was someone one else, he could deal with that. Besides, it wasn’t like they were even on a date! Still he couldn’t shake the feeling that he dearly would like to punch that someone else in the face. Suddenly he heard something slam and jolted out of thought. “What’s wrong?” He asked.

Alec groaned and dropped his head into his hands. Sympathetically, Magnus leaned over and put a hand on the younger man’s shoulder. “I have to go,” Alec said, standing up suddenly.

“Okay, let me drive you home.” He said, standing up also, startled.

Alec shook his head, and Magnus noticed his nose was getting red and there were tears in his eyes. “No. I can find my way home.” and with that he hurried out of the restaurant.

Alec slammed his phone down on the table and dropped his head into his hands. Arrrghh. Why was this happening! Out of all the- Suddenly he felt a hand on his shoulder and his heart started beating faster. Ohmygod oh my god hes touching me why is he touching oh my god. Why was he freaking out so much? “I have to go.” He said, standing up and ignoring Magnus’s protests.

Once outside he began walking to the nearest subway station. His arm was still tingling from where Magnus had touched it. Argh why are you smiling! He thought, trying to stop. Suddenly his phone buzzed and he looked down.

~Finding your way home alright?~

Then another one.

~Tonight was great. We should do it again sometime~

Alec smiled fully now. He want’s to do it again! He laughed and stepped onto the subway.

Why was he so happy? He thought the moment he woke up. Then he remembered and grabbed his phone from beside his bed. There were 3 missed calls from Izzy, 4 from Clary and one text from Jace. He sighed in disappointment and rolled out of bed to go get ready for the day.

Around 9 o’clock while he was making breakfast his phone buzzed again and he grabbed it immediately. It was from Magnus.

~Good morning again! Did you make it home okay last night, or did the vicious subway people get you xD~

-Yeah I got home fine.-

~Good. You seemed a little upset yesterday, better today?~

-Yeah. Good, are you going to keep asking me if I’m okay?-

~Somebodies grumpy. Fine I’ll change the subject. What are you having for breakfast?~

This went on for two hours until Alec suddenly realized he was supposed to be at work 5 minutes ago. “Crap!” He shouted, jumping off the couch and running downstairs.

Second time this week crap crap crap! He thought as he raced into the museum. “Alec where have you been! The next tour starts in 5 minutes!” Grace, on of the other tour guides hissed as he rushed into the employee changing room.

“I know! Just….stall them for me!” He shouted slamming the door behind him.

“Taylor! Make sure everythings read to be shipped out tomorrow, and find Gwen! She still hasn’t shown me the prototype for the Abernathy wedding!” Magnus showed the girl away and glanced down at his phone again.

“Why do you keep doing that?” Camille asked, fixing him with an accusatory glare.

“Doing what?”

“That!” She said as he glanced at his phone again. “You’re checking your phone like a high schooler waiting for their crush to text.”

Magnus blushed slightly and tried to look offended. “I’m waiting for a very important text if you must know.”

She raised her eyebrows and smirked. “Oh? From who?”

“Um…..a museum.”

“A museum?”

“Yes….I’m...they….its a museum of clothing.”

“Yes, now if you don’t mind Miss Nosey, I’m going to go into my office and work on paperwork.” He snapped, stalking away.

Once inside his office he sank down into his chair and leaned back. Why hadn’t he texted back? Camille was right. He was acting like a stupid high schooler. (A/N: No offense to high schoolers meant...I happen to be a stupid high schooler.) And now he was going to have to think up some reason why he would be in contact with a clothing museum. Was there even a clothing museum in New York?? “Museum!” He shouted suddenly, sitting up and knocking a pile of papers over.

Alec probably had to go to work. He smiled suddenly, getting an idea.

“Camille darling could you do me a favor?” He called from his office.

A few seconds later Camille entered, glaring. “What? Is there an emergency at the clothing museum?” She asked, clearly still annoyed about earlier.

Magnus smiled and shook his head. “Could you grab my coat for me, I’m going out.”

“I’m not your butler!”

“Yes but I have a show coming up in Paris and I might need help…..” He trailed off, letting her figure out the rest.

“Yes right away.” She smiled and ducked out of his office.

He reached the museum around noon and walked up to old woman sitting at the front desk. “Excuse me, I was wondering if Alec Lightwood was here by chance?”

She looked up and smiled. “Alec? Let me check one moment please.”

He nodded and stood back, drumming his fingers against the countertop. “It looks like hes on his break right now, so he might be in the break room, but Alec likes to go up to the shadowhunter exhibit during his break, you might find him there!” The woman said, smiling.

“Right...and...where would that be?”

“Oh yes! Heres a map of the museum and right theres the shadowhunter exhibit.” She said pulling out a large purple marker and circling a room on the third floor.

“Thank you.” Magnus said, smiling and heading of towards the stairs.

There weren’t very many people on the third floor, and there was absolutely no one in the shadowhunter room expect a messy haired man sitting on a bench staring at an exhibit of weapons. Magnus smiled and leaned against the doorway. Alec had his head tilted to the side, with a notebook in his lap and a pen taping in his hand and a little smile. “Hey stranger.”

Alec jumped, causing the notebook to fall out his lap as he looked around “M-Magnus? What are you doing here?” He blushed slightly.

Magnus laughed and walked over, sitting down on the bench beside him. “I was on a break and thought I’d stop by to see if you were working. and bring you this.” He said, producing a thermos from his bag.

Alec raised his eyebrows and took it hesitantly. “What is it?”

“Its boiled cabbage juice.”

Alec pulled a face and Magnus chuckled. “Its coffee you idiot. Black.”

“Oh…” He blushed again and took a sip. “Thanks.”

“No problem.” He replied softly.

While Alec drank his coffee Magnus began to look around the room. It was very minimalistic with a large case of weapons taking up an entire wall. Along the other three walls were various old pages and drawings of runes and on the opposite wall was a display showing three objects, a cup, a mirror and a sword. (A/N: I know the mirror isn’t actually a mirror but its easier this way.) “What are those?” He asked, pointing to the objects.

“Those are the Mortal Instruments. The mortal cup, the mortal sword and the mortal mirror.”

“What do they do?”

“The cup was supposed to turn mundane people into shadowhunters, the sword was supposed to make them tell the truth and the mirror was the entrance to their city, Idris.”

They sat in silence for a few moments until Magnus looked over and laughed. “I have a confession to make.”

Alec looked at him quizzically. “I didn’t come all the way down here to just bring you coffee. I was wondering….if you….well...might want to come over on halloween and...I don’t know...watch Carrie or something.”

Alec, who had been taking another sip of coffee spluttered and coughed. “W-what?”

Magnus laughed again, damn he was adorable. “Watch Carrie...you and me….like friends….”

“Oh um….don’t you have some big party to go to...I mean..with you being a celebrity and all.”

He shrugged. “I usually go to my friend Ragnor’s party, but its the same every year and honestly I was just going to stay home this year. Its rather boring, so I thought, you might like to join me. Unless you have plans..”
“No! I mean….um….no, I don’t have plans. And that would be great.” He said, smiling shyly.

“Fabulous! Well...I better get back unless I want to find the studio in a wreck when I get back. Honestly sometimes I don’t think its possible for them to function without me. “ He said chuckling. “I’ll call you later.”
