The smell of blueberries fills the small cafe as the muffins in the oven bake.
This kind of sensation gives you a sense of peace and serenity that you can’t get anywhere else. Plus, you’re very social. That’s why you love your job.
As the sweet smell in the air thickens, you take that as a sign that they are ready.
Once they are, you open the display door, set them inside and walk to the door to change the sign to open.
Expecting Mr. Shin, your favorite customer, you prepare a caramel macchiato for him along with a warm muffin at his usual spot. Almost knowing his exact time, you see Mr. Shin walk up to the door.
“Ah, Mr. Shin. My favorite customer.” You beam at the man as he sits down.
“Hi! Oh, I see you’ve prepared for my arrival.” He replies.
“When have I not? A caramel macchiato is the first thing I make in the morning.”
“Good girl!” He says giving a small pat on your small head.
You give him a smile before the bells attached to the door ring.
“Y/N!” The girl entering the store beams.
“Kyung-Soon! What can I get you? I would have prepared, but you always change it up.”
“Give me a Mr. Shin usual.” She smiles.
“Coming right up!” You say smiling at Kyung-Soon.
While making another caramel macchiato, the bell rings again.
“One moment please!” You yell softly from the back room.
“I don’t have a moment.” The cold voice snaps, and you immediately knows who it is.
Once you finish making the coffee, you bring it over to Kyung-Soon and walk over to the cold customer.
“Hello Mother.” You say changing your demeanor to ice cold.
“Can I get anything for you? Or are you here to tell me what you always tell me?” You snap at your cold mother.
“Watch your attitude. And yes, I would like a black coffee.”
“Yes Mother.” You say in between your teeth, insides boiling in anger.
After getting her coffee, you walk over to her table and give her the coffee. You to walk away, but your mother grabs your hand.
“I still want to talk about it.” She snaps.
“And I don’t. If you don’t mind, I have a job to attend to.”
“I set you a date with Min-Jun.”
“You what?” You yell at her.
“Did you not hear what I just said?”
“I heard you. No matter how much you want me to marry that egotistical maniac, I’m not going to. I have to work. In case you haven’t noticed, I have a job.” You snap, pulling your hand away from your mother’s grip.
“It’s to get married to a wealthy business man!” Her mother yells after you as you walks away.
“It’s not an option!”
“I’m twenty-four! I can make whatever decisions I want.”
“Go home Mother.”
“Why are you-”
“STOP. Leave now, please.” You speak calmly trying not to lose your temper.
With that, your mother stands, takes her purse and heads out of the door.
“I’m sorry about that.” You say giving an apologetic smile to Mr. Shin and Kyung-Soon.
The frustrated look on your face disappears when she hears the tea pot on the stove start to steam.
“Time for my tea.” Your voice comes out soft, almost forgetting what happened moments earlier.
You take the hot tea pot of the stove and set it on a cloth before getting a small cup.
Taking a moment to rest after pouring a cup, you starts to consider the date. Your thoughts are interrupted when Kyung-Soon approaches the counter.
“Don’t tell me you are considering the date with that money sack. Are you?” She asks genuinely curious and worried.
“Yes? Maybe? I don’t know at this point. I’ve never really met him, but people at his work are scared of him. I mean I wouldn’t be, but he’s definitely not my type.” You retort, mumbling the last few words.
“Your type is unrealistic. It’s Prince Charming on a horse coming to save the day.”
“It is not.” You snap.
“Anyway, here is money for my meal, and I will be on my way. Please. Try to have a good day. Don’t consider the date.”
“Bye Kyung-Soon.” You playfully roll your eyes at your best friend.
“Think about it. Bye.” She says walking out the door.
Mr. Shin sits quietly in his usual spot and calls you over.
“What do you think?” You ask taking a seat and holding the hot tea in between your cold hands.
“It doesn’t matter what I think. If you haven’t met him, give him a chance. He could turn out to love you. I know I do. You’re hard not to love and consider family.”
“Thank you. I mean, I guess I could give the guy a chance.” You mutter softly.
“He could be the one. Sounds ridiculous, but it’s how I felt about my Soo-Min.”
“I remember her. She was a wonderful person. I’m so sorry.”
“I’ll see her again. Anyway, take the chance with that guy. What was his name again Kang Jinsoo or something?”
“Min-Jun.” You groan.
After Mr. Shin leaves, you place your hands on the counter, head in between and groan in frustration.
I mean, I don’t have to marry him. Right?
