Chapter 8: Let it Burn
I couldn't stop running; I couldn't exactly go back after turning their road into a river of lava. I had no idea what kind of a distance I had covered, but I lost sight of Arendelle a while ago. "Just keep moving, you can't go back." I said as I kept running, my emotions pushing me along.
I have to bring him back, but I need Kristoff and Anna to do it. I know I shouldn't be disrupting their sleep, but this was incredibly important. I ran through the hallways wanting to get to their room as fast as possible.
I arrived at their door a few minutes later. I considered knocking, but I figured they would forgive me for it once I told them what this was about. I opened the doors and stepped outside, "Anna!" I shouted as I stepped inside. Neither of them stirred, for such an energetic person Anna sure was a heavy sleeper. A wave of frosty magic woke them up in an instant.
Anna sat up quickly and saw me in the doorway, "Elsa? What is it? Do you know what time it is?"
"Yes I know its late." I said, "But this is too important for it to wait until morning."
Kristoff got up a little groggy, "Why don't you talk to Zander?"
I sighed in frustration, "Because this is about Zander. He ran away" That sure got their attention.
I stopped for a rest. Who long have I been running? And for how long? I looked back; there was a trail of fire and ash where my feet hit the ground. That wasn't good. Swearing I punch the tree I was leaning against and it immediately went up in flames. I jumped back, and then face palming for forgetting I was immune to fire, "I have to keep moving." I looked to where I was headed. The exit of the forest I was running through was just ahead.
I exited the forest to see that there was a large valley in front of me. In the center of the valley was a village, about a hundred yards away. It wasn't that far from the end of the valley, and the base of a large black mountain. Maybe I could find something useful there.
I willed by fire under control the best I could, I could go walking into a village with every step I take leaving the ground in flames. My presence attracted a view stares from the villigars around me, what they were doing at this time of night was beyond me. I assumed they had jobs that worked late into the night. I found an inn, if I'm going to learn anything. An inn is a great place to start.
"Good evening, how can I help you." A young dark-brown haired girl around my age said as I walked to the counter. I don't know why she's working so late into the night.
"Well you can start by answering one question." I said. I gave her a smile, "What's a girl like you working at this hour?" She blushed and her smile became shy.
"W-w-well, I have to make money and all they could offer me was the night shift." I nodded in understanding, and then I felt someone tap me on the shoulder. I turned around to see a man a year or two older than me. He expression showed that he wasn't happy with me here.
"Can I help you?" I asked my flaming gaze making him a little nervous.
"Yeah," he said, "Why don't you explain why you're flirting with my girl." I rolled my eyes, great just what I need.
"Your girl?" I questioned, I looked back at her. The way she was looking at the man showed that she didn't want anything to do with him, "Because the last time I checked, no man could own a girl. So I don't think you have the right to call her your girl." He glared at me, "I don't have time for this." I said walking past him purposely bumping him with my shoulder. "Oh sorry about that." I said sarcasm dripping from my voice. He responded my shoving me, thrown off balance I tripped over a table and falling to the floor.
He stomped over to me and easily lifted me up and slammed me on the table, "You're going to regret doing that." I looked up and saw the girl looked scared.
"If my reason for doing it is for her." I said, "I'm sure I won't." I pushed myself off the table with a great about of force before turning around and punching his face. He let go of me in order to cover his now bleeding nose, it was probably broken.
"Oh now you're going to pay." He growled.
"Gladly, would you like silver." I held up on fist, "Or gold?" I finished as I held up my other fist. He snarled and charged me, his rage flooded my mind. The flood of emotion caught me off guard and he slammed his fist into the side of my face. I fell to the ground, I rubbed the side of my face, either my power doesn't let me get hurt as easily, or he throws a pathetic punch.
"Chris, stop." The girl said as she tried to stop him from hurting me more, so Chris was his name.
"Veronica stay out of this." Chris said pushing her away, she fell to the ground. My rage escalated. I knew what was going to happen now.
I was fighting to hold it back, "Veronica, get out of here." I said she looked ready to protest. "Get out of here! Things are going to get dangerous and I don't want you getting hurt." She saw the look in my eyes, then she nodded and left the inn right when my vision went red.
I just finished explain what had happened. "Whoa," Kristoff said, "That's quite a story."
Anna looked determined, "Well we can't just stand here, we need to go out there and find him."
"I agree, but how are we going to find him." I asked, Kristoff walked over to the window.
"Maybe we can just follow the fire and destruction." Kristoff said, Anna and I walked toward the window and Saw a line of fair and smoke leading through the forest.
"Okay, let's get ready and find my brother-in-law." Anna said.
I blushed, "Will you stop that." Anna only giggled and Kristoff gave a silent laugh.
It took a while, but they got ready and we got Olaf and Sven to come with us too, we were almost ready to leave, "Wait," Kristoff said, "If we're going after Zander, we should bring Ithilagar." Kristoff didn't wait for a response, he just ran off toward Zander's room.
A few minutes later he came back with Ithilagar hot on his tail. "So why do we need him?" Olaf asked voicing my thoughts
"Other than Elsa, Ithilagar is the only one I know that can talk some sense into Zander." Kristoff explained; which caused me to raise an eyebrow. Does Zander do some sort of voice for Ithilagar like how Kristoff does a voice for Sven? Shaking the thought off I went outside to finish cooling the melted road.
Kristoff hooked up Sven to his sled and everyone climbed in, "Just a warning," Kristoff said, "We like to go fast." he whipped the reins and Sven ran in the direction of the flaming path Zander accidently left for us.
"Don't worry Elsa," Anna said, "We'll bring him back." I gave her a slight smile. I felt Ithilagar nudge me and a scratched the top of his head. I really hope Zander is okay.
When I came to, I was underneath a burning beam in what I assumed was what was left of the village. I arched my back to lift the beam and I crawled out, the flames wouldn't hurt me, but I still don't like that literal weight on my shoulders. When the beam connected with the ground a flurry of embers flew into the air. I stood up and dusted the ashes and cinders of my clothes and looked around.
The village was in ruins, snow was starting to collect itself on the floors and the tops of what used to be buildings. I walked out of the burnt ruin and got a full view of the area around. Seeing the damage I sighed and closed my eyes before sensing the heat of the area around me.
No one was here except for me was here… no one alive at least. I raised my hand and the flames escalated, there was no point in trying to put him out. All I could do was… let it burn.
(Cue 'Let it Go' soundtrack… oh yes I did)
I lowered my hand as I looked around. I began to walk toward the mountain. The words coming to my mouth, Elsa said singing helped her, maybe it would help me.
The flames glow red on the ground tonight,
Not a soul here that's living.
A kingdom of incineration,
And it looks like I'm the king.
I looked around at the fire eating at the remains of the village, I turned around refusing to look at them. I closed my eyes trying not to think about the death they caused.
These flames are roaring like this furnace deep inside,
Tried to hold it back, it just intensified.
My eyes shot open and I kept walking forward clenching my fists as I repeated the words my parents told me.
Don't get too close and don't forget,
You're a curse that people will neglect.
I was shaking, what my father told me that day echoed in my head.
I did just that, I let them learn.
I looked down at my gloves; one was leather, the other altered by my fire. I glared at the gloves, and I took them off and casting them aside as I sang the next line.
Now that they've learned!
Let it burn, let it burn.
They're no longer my concern.
I sang as I released the fire I was holding back; starting with small flames before turning them into infernos. Deciding to be a little creative, I gather some of the flames into the shape of a bird. The bird of flame took flight and soared through the air. I shot flames into the air mixing embers with the current snowfall.
Let it burn, let it burn,
Time to show them it's my turn.
I felt proud of the bird of fire. I wonder? I wave my hand and the flames dissipated to reveal an actual bird who let loose a song-filled cry. I shot my flames around me as I continued the song.
I was born
And was cursed this way.
Let the flames rage on.
I set my hand on fire and held it dangerously close to my face.
The heat never bothered me anyway.
I walked forward an evident fire in my eyes as I looked at the fire around me. I couldn't explain it, but I was looking at the fire in a different way than before. I almost laughed as I sang the next verse.
It's funny how my fire,
Makes everything seem bright.
I turned around and was now walking backwards as I looked at the trail I had left.
And the rage that just controlled me,
Set everything a light.
I turned around and my speed picked up as I ran toward a boulder barricade blocking my path towards the mountain, I smirked.
It's time to see what I can do.
To push my limits and burn through.
I walked forward and put my hand against the stone, which immediately began to melt.
No wrong, no right, I'm not just me.
The stone started to melt as I intensified the fire. Then I just shot both my hands forward and the stone turned into lava, I ran forward melting more stone that formed into a bridge over the rocky quarry.
Let it burn, let it burn,
I am one with the ash and flame.
Let it burn, let it burn.
The bridged came to an end and I jumped down to find myself at the base of the large black mountain.
I'll never be the same.
Here I stand, and here I'll stay.
I slammed my fist into the ground the ground beneath me glowing with the symbol of a Pheonix taking flight before beginning to melt.
Let the flames rage on.
I lifted my hands with a little strain as if was lifting an actual weight, the lava and melted ground beneath me began to rise. If this was where I am going to stay, I think it should look more like a worth place for someone like me. Walls began to form, it grew taller adding a couple floors. When I felt that it was at the top of the building I slammed my foot immediately stopping the lava and removing the heat for the lava turning it solid.
My power surges through the air and burns the ground.
I shot the heat around me and extended the walls and started to form the roof.
My rage is melting stone like molten magma all around.
No more holding back now it's time to stand up tall.
I reached for the necklace Elsa gave me and took it off. I looked down at it as I sang the next few lines.
I'm never going back,
I'm a danger to them all!
I closed my fist around the necklace and threw it out the window. I looked down at my leather attire. I think it's time for a change of fashion. I focused my flames at the leather and my clothes began to change.
Let it burn, let it burn.
And I'll glow like the setting sun.
Let it burn, let it burn.
I finished the outfit by building the flames in my shoulders and extending a cape of flames flowing down my back and I started to walk towards the wall forming a balcony as I went.
And it's only just begun.
Here I stand, as the light of day.
Let the flames rage on!
I folded my arms with a triumphant smile on my face. The bird I created landed on my shoulder.
The heat never bothered me anyway.
I unfolded my arms and placed them on the railing of the balcony, looking at the area around my new home. "Not bad Zander," I told myself, "Not bad at all." The bird cawed and landed on the railing. I stroked her black and crimson colored feathers. I admired the bird.
She stood proudly and had a cunning and dangerous look in her flaming eyes. Her feathers were sleek and were black with crimson red trim. Her hooked beak was orange in color, and her red scaly feet had deadly long and hooked talons.
"This is just the beginning," I told her, she cooed in response, "I think I'll call you… Ashara." She screeched a happy response. I smiled before turning around and walking into my new home, the walls shined with the luster of obsidian. I could clearly see my reflection in the walls. I rubbed my face, "I think it's time for not just a change in clothing."
I thought I saw an increase of fire in the direction that we were going in, but it was probably just a tree collapsing, "Hey Elsa, are you alright?" Anna asked. "You keep looking like you're deep in thought."
I sighed, "No, I don't know what to think about Zander." I subconsciously rubbed the arm that he burned, "He's just… confusing." Anna turned towards Kristoff.
"Kristoff, maybe we should stop and take a rest." Kristoff nodded and pulled Sven to a halt.
About half an hour later we were all sitting in a camp around a fire, well everyone except for Olaf, he was staying a good distance away from the fire. Ithilagar seemed to be the closest to the fire, close enough that any second his fur would catch on fire. "Ithilagar you shouldn't be so close to the fire." Anna said finally getting his name right, "You might get burnt."
Kristoff laughed, "Don't worry, Ithilagar isn't like other wolves."
Anna looked at him, "Is there something beyond his strange coloring."
"Ithilagar, come here please." Ithilagar stood up and walked towards Kristoff, "Sit," he did so, "Lie down, roll over." Ithilagar was looking annoyed, but he did as he was told.
"So he can do tricks," I said, "So what?" Kristoff held a finger to his lips.
"Ithilagar, speak." He said. I almost laughed, but that changed when Ithilagar spoke.
"What do you take me for, some kind of pet?" Ithilagar saw the shocked looks, "Yes I can talk, and let me say I have wanted to say so many things in my moment of silence. You have no idea how it is to stay silent in this group." Anna giggled at his behavior.
Kristoff laughed as well, "Well now that we've gotten that out of the way, I think we should get some sleep." Everyone agreed and people one by one fell asleep, well except for me.
Time passed and I couldn't go to sleep. I had too much on my mind. I rubbed the burn on my arm thinking of the person who gave it to me, "Can't sleep?" I jumped and turned to see Ithilagar padding towards me.
"Yeah," I said, it was weird talking to a wolf, even though he could talk.
Ithilagar sat beside me, "You know, Zander does care about you." I looked at him, "I have been with Zander for a few years, and I can tell that you made a pretty large impression on him." he paused before adding with a teasing voice, "He dreams about you y'know." I blushed, "Oh yeah he would say your name a couple times while he was sleeping, I could imagine what his dreams about you were." I pushed Ithilagar and he chuckled a little. He was good company, but Zander was right. He was a troublemaker.
Ithilagar perked up, "What is it?" I asked, he sniffed the air and he got into an aggressive stance.
"Wake the others," Ithilagar said, "Something's coming, and they don't smell friendly."
