Drama / Romance

Prologue

In 2015, war finally took America by storm. Bombs were dropped, cities such as Los Angeles, New York, Atlanta, Pittsburgh and Chicago were reduced to rubble in the space of a few short months. Other cities were completely taken off the face of the Earth, as though they never existed. Las Vegas, Dallas, Seattle, Detroit, Boston- all just distant memories. Washington D.C was left untouched. While the country around it turned to dust, everyone flooded to D.C, the seemingly safe haven.

And then, all at once, the bombers left without a trace. The soldiers sent into the country on foot were picked up and whisked away before anyone could follow or discover their identities. No-one knew who they were, where they came from or why they decided to hit America so badly. But they were gone, so, eventually, people started to go back to where they came from, ready to rebuild their lives. Los Angeles and New York became the places to be for shelter, as they were being thrown back together so fast.

Then, exactly one month after the war ended, the government as it was known then was wiped out.

One plane returned, and before anyone could do anything, Washington D.C was gone.

This left the country in an even bigger state of disarray. Who would lead the country now? How would they recover? Would they recover? There was already talk of other countries invading. Of course, there were many offers from people who thought they could run the broken land, but the only real choice was a group who had long offered advice to the government, and were experts in the field of catastrophe.

They were called the World In Catastrophe Department for a reason.

The country settled back down as much as it could. Work began again on rebuilding the cities, even planning to build new ones. The government dished out money and aid to those who needed it, and eventually, they were in a place where they could begin to work out how to prevent this from happening ever again, and to find out who had done this in the first place.

After much discussion on the matter, in 2020, the new government brought out a law. However, this time, it was only a law for those under the employment of President Paige Sr. The rest of the country would have no idea this law even existed. The law was as follows:

'In order to preserve the values and traditions needed to serve the President of W.C.K.D dutifully, marriages between the children of the most experienced and valued workers would be arranged as a matter of convenience. Regardless of the child's sexuality, race, age, or profession, they will marry the person their parents agreed on before the age of 21. 10 employees with children will be picked each year to participate in this experiment. If a couple works with the President and are both picked, they will be expected to provide two children to the experiment. This will be the highest honour. To refuse this will mean suffering the punishment. We need to keep the country running smoothly. To save everyone from the ever looming threat of war.'

W.C.K.D was good.

We're hope you're happy with our choices and that you understand what an honour it is to be chosen for this experiment. Please contact President Paige directly when you are ready to receive the money set aside for your child's wedding. You should not marry them before they are 17, nor after they are 21- unless you have been given special permission from the President to break any of these rules. We expect each couple to have at least 2 children. This can happen before or after they get married, though we would prefer the child to be born in wedlock.

W.C.K.D is Good.

Best wishes,

President Ava Paige.

When Denise Agnes received her letter, she was overjoyed. Not only had her daughter been picked for the most prestigious experiment out there, she would also be marrying one of the two boys she had grown up with. Teresa was undeniably more comfortable around Newt and Thomas than she was around anyone else. It couldn't be any better.

*

When Jake Cooper received his letter, he was concerned. His only child, his pride and joy, was going to marry the son of an employee he'd hated since his first week working for President Paige. If the child's father was anything to go by, this Gabriel kid would be the undoing of his Rachel. He would always have preferred for her to pick her husband, even if it was a great honour to be chosen for the experiment.

*

When Leonard George received his letter, he was nonchalant. The first thing he did was call his eldest daughter down and tell her straight up what the deal was. She was going to marry this Aris kid, no questions asked. Harriet had known since she was small that there would always be a remote possibility that she would be chosen for this experiment. To them both, duty came first.

*

When Alexander Green received his letter, he was annoyed. Who was this Brenda? He'd never even heard of a 'Watson' within the President's ranks. After discussing it with Thomas, it emerged that the boy knew his future wife through a friend, making him feel slightly more at ease.

*

When Amy Issacs received her letter, she was distraught. Her son was to be used as a pawn in the games of the government, just like she and her husband were. They were the lucky ones, she knew this, because they fell in love long before the marriage was arranged. While both Newt and Amy love Teresa to pieces, both of them knew that the love they held for her wasn't the kind required for a healthy marriage.

*

When Richard Issacs received his letter, he was furious. Both his children were now destined to marry for convenience. If it weren't for the need to support them, and the pressure from his parents, he doubted he would even work for President Paige in the first place. Minho was one of Newt's friends that he met in middle school, and though Richard knows there could be worse people his girl could be paired up with, no-one will ever be good enough for Sonya in his eyes.

*

When James Johnson received his letter, he was ecstatic. His son, his own boy, was going to serve to the highest honour. Although it was true he despised Jake Cooper, he was willing to put aside his petty feuds to assist Gally in any way possible. They were going to succeed in this experiment if it was the last thing they did.

*

When Cheryl Jones received her letter, she was curious. Curious to see how this would all pan out. She'd been quietly observing the experiment's data for years, waiting to see how each year's candidates would do. Now Aris was in the firing line, it would be like witnessing an experiment first hand. Maybe it would end up being a breakthrough.

*

When Kate Roberts received her letter, she was wary. Knowing the Issacs the way she did, she knew that Richard would be ridiculously overprotective of Sonya. Normally, she would say with good reason, but Minho was more than capable of looking after her and himself. It was possible that this experiment could do good, but it was more likely that they would be ripped apart.

*

When Jonathan Watson received his letter, he was prepared. He'd trained Brenda up for this potential moment, and kept himself secluded at the compound so he was practically unknown. All of his energy was focused on his daughter. For the next few hours he repeated the same words over and over, in his head, in writing, out loud.
