Chapter Eleven: Together Forever

A whole week passed. During that time, Cynder’s broken leg healed, and so did her scars. In her opinion, that was a very good thing. She wanted to look her best on the day of her and Spyro’s lifemate ceremony. She did not fret about any of what would be coming after her special day. All she wanted was for it to remain exactly what it was: a special day. Sonic Boom helped her out the most. She was the one who seemed to know what she was doing. Stealth Elf and Hex were not as used to such things as she was. It surprised Cynder that Sonic Boom knew so much.

“How do you know how to do all this?” Cynder asked. “Have you had some sort of experience before?”

“Yes,” Sonic Boom told her. “I’ve helped others out in my home realm. You see, some of the inhabitants in Skylands believe there aren’t that many Griffins left, but in reality, there are a lot of us. It’s just that we don’t appear too much. And that is because some of us have been hunted by the inhabitants themselves. So we’ve waited everything out to see how it will all work out. Anyway, back to your question. I helped a few of my friends with this stuff. It was fun to do there, but it was sad to see them go. I’m happy you won’t be leaving here when this ceremony is over.”

“Why would I leave?” Cynder asked. “I have all my greatest friends right here at the Ruins. And I have Spyro. Why would I want to leave all you guys?”

Sonic Boom smiled. She couldn’t come up with an answer, and that made Cynder happy. She had decided she would never leave the Ruins or the Skylanders ever. Even when she was old, she would remain there at the Ruins and help that generation of Skylanders. She was sure Spyro believed the same exact thing. But then she decided she would keep her mind on the ceremony itself. Cynder wished she could know what Spyro was doing. But then she thought that she didn’t need to know. She knew he was just as excited as she was.

When she saw Sonic Boom coming back over to her, she smiled at her best friend. Then she saw the box Sonic Boom had down at her feet. “What is that?” she asked.

Sonic Boom opened the box, revealing a choker and four bracers that resembled those Cynder already wore. The difference was that these had no spikes. She looked up at Sonic Boom, who was still smiling.

“What are these?” she asked.

“It’s better if you wear these than the ones you wear normally,” Sonic Boom explained. “I asked Sunburn and Hex and Stealth Elf, as well as Trigger Happy and Gill Grunt, and they all agree with me. They think you would look even more beautiful. I mean, I think your level of beauty will never be overcome by anything else, but I agree with them when it comes to the spikes. It fits better when we’re in the field, fighting others. You know what I mean?”

“Yes,” Cynder said. “And I will do just that.” She couldn’t stop smiling. The ceremony would be the next day, in the near-evening. The party would most likely last all night.

At the same time Spyro was going through almost the same exact situation with Sunburn. “I’m a little nervous, Sunburn,” he admitted. “How do I know Cynder will like some of the ideas I have for the ceremony? Do you know what I mean?”

“Trust me, she will,” Sunburn told him honestly. “She understands a lot. I can see that just by looking at her. She seems to know stuff that some of us don’t. And that’s something I like about her. Of course, tonight, you won’t be hanging out with her. You’ll be with me, Trigger Happy, and Gill Grunt. Cynder will be with Sonic Boom, Hex, and Stealth Elf. It might seem like we have a short number of best friends, but I don’t think so. I think it’s better when we have a small number of best friends. Then we don’t have to reveal too many things to a lot of people.” He laughed. “You know what I mean?”

Spyro nodded. He understood very well, as he didn’t want many of the Skylanders to know Cynder’s secret. Not even Sonic Boom and Sunburn knew it. He wondered if he would ever allow them to know.

As the day wore on, Spyro and Cynder found themselves ready for the ceremony the next day. Both found themselves smiling while dining with their respective best friends. While Cynder dined with Sonic Boom, Hex, and Stealth Elf, she saw Whirlwind walking near them. Whirlwind never looked at them. Cynder smiled, not caring. Tomorrow would be the best day of her life, and because of that, she wouldn’t be caring about the things in life that attempted to make her feel bad.

“Hey, Cyn, is something going on?” Sonic Boom asked. The sound of her voice snapped Cynder back to reality. When she looked at her friends, she saw they were all looking at her with concern.

“I’m sorry, what’s going on?” Cynder asked.

“We just wondered if something might be bothering you,” Hex said. “Is everything okay?”

Cynder smiled. “Yes. Everything’s just fine.”

With Spyro it was almost the exact same way. As he talked and laughed with Sunburn, Trigger Happy, and Gill Grunt, he thought of how different it would be when he and Cynder were mates.

“Hey, Spyro, will you guys be going on a honeymoon when the ceremony’s over?” Trigger Happy asked. “And if so, where will you be going?”

“I’m not sure,” Spyro replied. “All I care about right now is being with her. I can’t wait for the ceremony tomorrow. I bet she can’t wait. I just want this night to end so we can be together. I mean, I like being with you guys, but—”

“We understand,” Sunburn told him. “I understand how you wish to be with her more. Truthfully, the secret I’ve kept from some of you is that I want to have my ceremony with Sonic Boom. We love each other enough, and we’ve realized we probably won’t stop loving each other, so…yeah.”

“Well, when that day comes, I’ll be there, and so will Cynder,” Spyro said. “It will be our honor. After all, you’ll be standing with me up at the front when Cynder comes down the aisle, and Sonic Boom will be escorting Cynder down, so it fits well.”

After that, the four of them continued on with their night. Both Spyro and Cynder were tired after their time with their friends came to a close, and when they found themselves near the Core, they each took a deep sigh. When Cynder laid down, she shivered a little, as the air was cool. Spyro got down beside her and hugged her close to him. She smiled.

“So how did your day go?” she asked.

“Good,” he replied. “How about yours? Anything really good happen with Sonic Boom, Hex, and Stealth Elf?”

“We just had a good amount of fun,” she said. “What about you, Sunburn, Trigger Happy, and Gill Grunt?”

“The same as you,” Spyro replied. “It’s amazing to think that tomorrow we have our ceremony. It’s crazy, don’t you think? This is our destiny. And I’m not guessing on that. I think this really is our destiny. What do you think?”

“I agree,” Cynder said. “Good night, Spyro.”

“Good night.”

The next day Spyro and Cynder were with their respective friends all day. The last few things were being put into place. After the whole day was spent to the last preparations, Cynder found herself with Sonic Boom. Sonic Boom put the sapphire necklace Spyro had used to propose to Cynder around Cynder’s neck. Cynder had put the bracers and choker with no spikes on already. She was ready. Sonic Boom led her to the spot where she would wait until it was time for her to walk down the aisle.

Meanwhile Spyro waited with Sunburn underneath an arch. Sunburn looked to Spyro with a huge smile upon his face. Spyro knew he couldn’t stop smiling, and he couldn’t blame him. He himself couldn’t stop smiling, either. He looked to those who had attended. Hex, Trigger Happy, Gill Grunt, and Eon were in the front. In the back row was Cali. Near her was Ghost Roaster, along with Chop Chop. The chief transporter, Flynn, was there, too. So was another friend of Eon and Cali’s. His name was Hugo, and he was Eon’s apprentice.

At the same time, Sonic Boom looked at a clock near her. When she saw the time she whispered to Cynder, “It’s time.”

After hearing this, Cynder smiled. She came out of her hiding place and found herself standing across from Spyro. He stood there with Sunburn. Spyro smiled when he saw her. He couldn’t stop smiling still. He felt the cool air, and that, along with the anticipation, made goosebumps appear on his skin. He saw Cynder’s beautiful sapphire eyes, which were lit up by not only the Electricity in her body, but also the sapphire necklace around her neck. When Cynder made it to where Spyro and Sunburn stood, along with Sonic Boom, Eon stood up and came over to stand in between Spyro and Cynder. He had the vows for this type of ceremony memorized already.

“Friends, we are gathered here today to witness these two young Dragons come together in an act of love,” Eon began. “Spyro, do you take Cynder as your mate, as the love of your life?”

“I do,” Spyro said, tears coming to his eyes.

“Cynder, do you take Spyro as your mate, and as the love of your life?”

“I do,” Cynder said, tears coming to her eyes.

“Do you promise to stay by one another’s side and never leave the other, no matter what happens?”

“Yes,” both Spyro and Cynder said.

“And will you protect your mate as well as you can and prevent them from being taken or injured?”

“I will,” Spyro and Cynder said together again.

“Spyro, Cynder, you are now bound together and have become mates. Spyro, you may now kiss Cynder.”

Spyro and Cynder happily embraced as they kissed one another. Tears streamed down their cheeks. They didn’t want this moment to end.

Their friends stood and clapped for them. Both Sonic Boom and Sunburn were crying.

As time passed, Spyro and Cynder found themselves at their party. Many of the Skylanders present at the party did not trust Cynder, but neither Spyro nor Cynder cared. All that mattered was that they were together.

While taking a break from the party, Spyro and Cynder noticed Eon was walking toward the gate that acted as the exit into the forest surrounding the Ruins. Looking around, Spyro and Cynder found no one was watching them.

“Hello, you two,” he greeted when he saw them. He had on a blue wizard-like hat, and in his left hand was a staff. “I believe you wonder what I am doing.”

“Yes,” Cynder said. “Are you going somewhere?”

“I am,” he answered. “I am going on an adventure. I will travel until I can no longer do so. I will most likely never return here. Before I leave, I must give you my present. As you know, the treehouse I lived in is bigger than all the others. And now that I am leaving, I am giving it to you both. I have already cleaned it for you.” He smiled brightly at them.

“You would really do that for us?” Spyro asked.

“Yes,” Eon replied. “You both are destined for great things. I am happy that I was able to put together what I believe to be the greatest team of Skylanders there will ever be. With you both as their leaders, I am not very surprised.” He remained silent for another moment, still smiling. Then he sighed and said, “I am leaving now. I hope to see you again someday. Now goodbye!”

He exited through the gate, waving. When he was finally out of sight, Spyro turned to Cynder. “I say we stay at this party for another hour or so, and then go to sleep. What do you say?”

“I agree,” she said. They shared a kiss again.

When the party came to an end, Spyro and Cynder went to their treehouse. Sonic Boom and Sunburn smiled at them as they departed.

Once in the treehouse, Spyro and Cynder stood by the balcony, near the bed. “Spyro, I’m so grateful for you,” Cynder said. “Thank you for always believing in me.” She hugged him hard. He returned it.

“I never stopped believing in you, and that was because I love you too much to ever let you go,” Spyro told her.

As they remained there, hugging and kissing, they told themselves and one another how they would never stop loving one another. When that night came to an end, Spyro and Cynder lay there in the bed, Spyro’s paw on top of Cynder’s.
