Chapter 25: Akuma in the Heart

The four of them landed in front of a church. This wasn't the first church they had come to and it wouldn't be their last. They had heard about something that was killing Akuma. It had started a day ago when a flash of green light had shone through the town. Reports of Akuma activity had followed, but the reports included the destruction of said Akuma. The group was sent to find out what was going on. The church was the only place the Akuma had yet to attack.

"We're here," a voice said. The owner of the voice didn't seem to be happy. "Make sure none of you get in my way." He reached up and opened the door. His companions said nothing since that was just the way this guy was. The four entered the church ready to attack or defend themselves if needed.

The church was barely lit. The sound of light snoring could be heard as they neared the pew. Suddenly, someone jumped up, a sword in hand. The boy in front blocked the attack with a sword of his own. With a shove, the attacker was pushed back. The attacker jumped back near his sleeping companion and shook him awake.

"Teme?" a sleepy voice asked.

"We have company," the other answered. The sleepy boy woke up quickly, standing beside his partner. The other turned back to the group of four. "What do you want? Are you here to kill us?"

"If we must," the leader said.

"Wait," a female voice said. A girl stepped forward and removed her hood so they could see her face. "We just want to know whose been killing Akuma."

"Akuma?" the shorter of the two boys asked. "You mean the strange creatures that have been attacking us?"

"So you are the ones killing them," a boy said stepping next to the girl. He too pulled back his hood. Silver hair was revealed.

"Yes," the shorter boy said. He stepped into the light, but stayed a few feet away from the others. But they could see his blond hair, blue eyes, and tanned face. His companion moved to his aide, sword still in hand. His hair was too dark to make out its exact color. His eyes were the same way, but his face was pale.

The red-head and the dark haired boy of the group revealed themselves just as the woman and silver haired boy had. "We are Exorcists," the red-head said. "I am Lavi."

"And I'm Lenalee," the female said.

"Allen," the silver haired man said. They stared at their dark haired friend, but the boy said nothing. "And he's Kanda."

"Naruto," the blond said. "And this is Sasuke." His partner just glared causing Naruto to roll his eyes. "Ao, you are Exorcists? What do you do?"

"We hunt down and destroy Akuma," Allen said. "As Lenalee said, we were sent here to find out who or what was killing Akuma. We thought it was either an Exorcist like us or an Akuma trying to get to the next level. Neither of you are Akuma, so that eliminates that possibility."

"But are they Exorcists?" Lavi asked. "I don't see any Innocence."

Naruto frowned. "I don't know what crime you think I'm guilty of but..."

"Innocence is an Exorcist's weapon," Kanda said interrupting Naruto.

"Oh," Naruto scratched the back of his neck. "I didn't know that."

"Obviously Idiot," Kanda said.

"What was that you Bastard?" Naruto yelled. He was ready to pound Kanda into the ground. Sasuke grabbed Naruto's arm and stopped him.

"Dobe," Sasuke said. "Don't start any unnecessary fights."

"That goes to you too Kanda," Allen said.

"Shut it Bean Sprout," Kanda said.

"Whatever, Girly Man," Allen said. Kanda glared at Allen.

"Ah, such friendship," Lenalee said with a smile.

"Anyway," Lavi said. "How have you been killing Akuma?"

Naruto looked at Sasuke. Sasuke sighed. "Mostly with our swords. They move slower than us, so it is easy to hit them."

"Amazing," Lenalee said. "You should join us and become Exorcists!"

"We can..." Naruto began but an explosion above caused part of the roof to cave in. The six of them dodged the falling debris. "Great. There's more of them." He reached behind himself and pulled out his own sword. He jumped into the air with the aid of Chakra and slashed down with wind slicing forward. Sasuke did the same with his lightning. After the two Akuma were down, the two lowered their swords. The Exorcists looked upon them in amazement.

Suddenly, a dozen Akuma flew into the room and attacked. "Innocence, activate," each Exorcist said. Lenalees's boots strengthened, Lavi's hammer grew, Allen's hand turned into that of a monster's, and Kanda's sword shined with a strange power. The four leapt into action. Naruto and Sasuke paused for a few seconds before they decide to join the fight. The fight lasted only a minute, before things got worse. Akuma after Akuma kept appearing as if they were breeding. The Exorcists began to slow down.

"This is interesting, is it not Tyki?" a voice asked.

"It is," Tyki agreed.

Allen looked up with a glare. "The Millennium Earl and Tyki."

"Allen Walker," Tyki said. "It is good to see you again." He smiled then looked at Sasuke and Naruto. "Who are your new friends?"

"Are you the one that has been attacking us?" Naruto asked.

"The first time was a coincidence," the Millennium Earl said. "But after you killed those first few, I've sent them to kill you." He laughed. "And now, you are going to die!"

"You first," Sasuke said from behind the Earl. He swung his sword down, but the Earl blocked it with his own sword. Sasuke fell to the ground but was able to land on his feet.

"Not bad," the Earl said. "But you'll have to do better than that." Suddenly, several purplish black butterflies came towards Sasuke. Allen jumped between the butterflies and Sasuke.

"Don't let them touch you," Allen said.

"Hn," Sasuke said. He raised his sword and jumped back towards the Earl, only to be met with another Akuma. Allen defeated the butterflies then changed his arm into his sword and faced off with the Earl. The other Exorcists fought off the Akuma.

"Seems like you are having fun," a girl said. She hugged Tyki. "Mind if I join in?"

"The blond or the dark haired boy?" Tyki asked.

"Hm..." She looked at both boys. "I'll go with the dark haired boy."

Tyki sighed. "Guess that means I'll take care of the blond." He jumped down and landed in front of Naruto. Road did the same but in front of Sasuke. Tyki raised his hands. "Lets see what you can do." Several more butterflies appeared.

Naruto grinned. "If you think I'm weaker than Sasuke, you have another thing coming." He raised one hand and a blast of wind ripped through the butterflies.

"Interesting," Tyki said. He collected a few butterflies and made a sword. Then he lunged at Naruto.

Road stared at Sasuke. "So, a human with the power to kill Akuma. Tell me, what is your innocence?"

"I don't have one," Sasuke said.

Road pouted. "Guess I'll just have to find out the hard way." Several candles with pointed ends surrounded Sasuke.

Sasuke just let them come towards him. The moment they were an inch away from him, they exploded.

"Huh?" Road asked. "So that's it. Lightning. A cool power." She smiled. "But my power is better." She stomped her foot and Sasuke suddenly found himself in a child's room. "I control everything in here." A robot charged to Sasuke. Using lightning would be pointless, so he used fire instead. However the fire wasn't hot enough. He dodged the robot's attack. "Fire too? The is amazing! I should turn you into a puppet."

Her words made Sasuke think of Kankuro. He sighed. He was going to have to use the Sharingan. His eyes shifted to red. Road's eyes widened. She was lost in an illusion. Sasuke stabbed his sword through her chest, knocking her back to reality. Sasuke removed his sword and Road fell forward. He stepped back, waiting for Road's world to disappear, but it didn't. Laughter caused Sasuke to turn back to Road.

"That was great," Road said. Her wound healed. "But sadly, you can't kill me." Several robots attacked Sasuke.

Sasuke dodged the attacks, as anger rose in him. He had enough of this girl. His eyes shifted to the Mangekyo. "Amaterasu." Black flames swallowed each of the robots, turning them into nothingness. He then locked eyes with Road. Road knew instantly that she wasn't going to win. Black flames hit her body and she screamed out in pain, her world disappearing. Her scream caused everyone to freeze.

Tyki's eyes widened. "Road!" He ran to her side, but her body was gone before he reached her. He glared at Sasuke. "How dare you." Sasuke was panting. Using the Amaterasu repeatedly took a lot out of him. "Refusal." A black void surrounded Sasuke. Sasuke's breathing began to slow as he felt an increasing pressure on his body.

Naruto charged at Tyki, his only desire being to save Sasuke. Tyki reached up and shoved his hand into Naruto's chest, but Naruto didn't feel any pain. Tyki grinned. "I can chose what to touch and what not to touch. Right now, I have my hand on your heart." He gave his hand a squeeze. Naruto dropped his sword and coughed up some blood. "I'm going to kill you slowly. Tell me, who do you think will die first? You or your friend?"

Naruto suddenly laughed. He looked up, eyes red. "Neither." Red Chakra began to surround him. Tyki was forced to pull back as the Chakra burned his arm. "Will killing you save Sasuke?" He stepped towards Tyki, slowly. Tyki flinched and stepped back.

Road suddenly appeared by his side. She had escaped Sasuke's attack just in time. She put a hand on Tyki's shoulder. "They're not normal." Tyki fully agreed. He glanced at the raven who was still fighting to survive. He gulped. These two had the power to kill them. He knew that from Road's close call and the fact that his wounds were taking much longer to heal. But he didn't want to retreat without causing some damage. He looked at his hand. Such a sacrifice was fine. Grabbing a butterfly, Tyki lunged at Naruto. He shoved his hand into Naruto's body, left the butterfly inside him, then jumped back. Road gagged as she could see Tyki's bones. Tyki and Road then jumped towards the Earl and disappeared with him just as Naruto fell to his knees and let out a scream.

The red Chakra was gone and he was holding his chest. The black force released Sasuke who caught his breath before he made his way to Naruto's side. The Exorcists walked over to them. Their eyes widened as they saw the Akuma marks form on Naruto's body.

"No!" Allen yelled. Sasuke raised an eyebrow. "The poison of an Akuma kills. There is no cure."

Sasuke looked at Naruto. 'He's going to die? No. I can't lose him.' Sasuke pulled Naruto into his arms.

"Be careful," Kanda said. "You don't want to get infected as well do you?"

"Kanda!" Lenalee's eyes widened. "Don't say that."

"It's fine," Sasuke said. All he wanted to do was be by Naruto's side. He hugged Naruto to him.

The blond coughed. "Let go, Teme. I don't want you to die."

Sasuke smiled. "Did you forget Dobe? Yuko said if one of us died, so would the other."

Naruto laughed and coughed. "She lied. You would have died back when Kaname bit me if it was true. I'm only still here because of Kurama."

'Kurama?' Sasuke thought. A light bulb seemed to turn on. 'Kyuubi. Kyuubi can save him.' He pulled Naruto's chin up and his eyes met with his, Sharingan meeting red fox eyes. Seconds later, Sasuke was facing the Kyuubi. "Why aren't you healing him?"

The Kyuubi growled. "You dare question me about the brat? You didn't care about him before."

"Save him," Sasuke ordered.

Kurama looked into Sasuke's eyes. He saw something in them that made him smirk. "I would do it if I could. The bastard put one of those bugs inside Naruto's chest. If it was removed, I could get rid of the poison."

"I'll do it," Sasuke said. He closed his eyes and then opened them. He was back to facing Naruto's dying form. Pulling out a kunai, he cut into Naruto's chest.

"What are you doing?" Allen asked. Kanda grabbed Allen's arm while Lavi stopped Lenalee from interfering.

"We can't," Lavi said. "We don't have the right to stop him." Allen froze. He knew Lavi was right. Lenalee turned and cried in Lavi's arms.

Sasuke wished he had the Byakugan since blood was in the way. It forced him to stop and wipe the blood away using Naruto's shirt. He cut deeper until he saw black. He reminded himself not to touch it. He formed a mini Chidori. The lightning destroyed the butterfly. Suddenly, red Chakra began to eat at the poison. Sasuke relaxed knowing that Naruto was going to be ok. The Exorcists watched as Naruto's body began to heal. It reminded them of the power of Noahs. Soon, Naruto was completely healed. The blood on Sasuke's hands disintegrated. Naruto opened his eyes and reached up. He pulled Sasuke into a hug.

"Thank you " Naruto said. When they separated, Sasuke helped Naruto to his feet. The blond looked around. "It seems we've destroyed the place."

"Don't worry about it," Lavi said. "We've destroyed worse."

Sasuke went over and dug out two backpacks and tossed one to Naruto. They knew they had to get out of there. Lenalee offered to take them to the Black Order. They looked at each other and decided that it was safer than staying there. The six of them made their way to the Black Order. During the journey, Lavi kept wondering how Naruto was able to survive. And he wasn't the only one. Kanda and Allen were wondering the same thing.

"He's still alive," a lonely umbrella said. "I must tell the Earl." He flew to the Earl. "He's alive, the blond kid was able to destroy the poison."

"That boy is the heart?" the Earl asked surprised.

"No," Road said. "Neither of those two belong here. Besides, they weren't normal. Especially the blond. He didn't feel human."

"I agree," Tyki said. "It was as if he had a demon inside of him."

"Something like that could never be the Heart," the Earl said with a frown.

"What do you want to do?" Road asked.

"Leave those two alone," the Earl said. "If you run into either of them, don't fight then alone. It would be best if you didn't fight them at all."

Kamui welcomed them. He asked if it was ok if he checked something. He said it was about the Heart. Sasuke agreed thinking it was about Naruto. He dragged the blond with him to face Hevlaska. She tells them that neither Sasuke nor Naruto have Innocence. "They are not apart of this world," she said. "They do not belong here." At her words, Kamui was forces to make a decision to either welcome them or send them packing. "They only have one day left here," Hevlaska added.

"Then I'll show you to your rooms," Kamui said.

"One room is fine," Sasuke said. He didn't want to be separated from Naruto. Naruto also didn't want to sleep alone tonight. Kamui simply nodded and led them out. With a wave to Hevlaska, Kamui showed them to their room. The two settled down and simply enjoyed the other's presence.

A knock on the door ended their silence. Sasuke opened the door to Lenalee. "Are you guys hungry?" They nodded. "Then lets go to the cafeteria." The two ninjas followed her to a large room in which several people were eating. They got their food then took their seats at Lenalee's table. Between Naruto and Allen, Sasuke was surprised they didn't rum out of food. Lavi, Lenalee, and Kanda were amazed that someone could eat more than Allen. Sasuke knew it was because Naruto had to be healed using Kyuubi's Chakra. When Naruto was done, the two went back to their room. Lavi, Lenalee, Kanda, and Allen watched them go.

"I talked to Bookman," Lavi said. "He told me that no normal human has ever been able to live after being poisoned by an Akuma. Only Exorcists, the Noah, and higher level Akuma can survive the poison. They are none of those."

"Then what are they?" Allen asked.

"I don't know," Lavi said. "Bookman only said they didn't belong here, that they shouldn't exist in this world."

"What does it matter?" Kanda asked. "As long as they don't get in my way, I don't care who they are." Lavi, Lenalee, and Allen smiled at this. Kanda was right. It did not matter who Sasuke and Naruto were. After all, they were already friends.

This was an AU since somethings were different about the characters. Plus, this contains information about certain events, but not in the original order. I tried to not spoil too much of the series without making it seem like a different story. I hope you liked it.
