Chuck vs The Game

Encino, Chuck's childhood home ; the basement

Chuck thought he couldn't be any more surprised after everything that had happened to him in the last few days. He was wrong.

When he entered the basement, he found rows and rows of shelving with neatly organised files. There were workstations around the area and a small conference table in the centre with some chairs. All in all, not your typical basement. It reminded him more of Castle than anything else.

Chuck was so engrossed in what he saw, that he didn't see his father straight away. When he turned around to take in more of the basement, he found his father standing behind him.

"Dad, what's all this? How long has this been here?"

"Charles, we have a lot to talk about so please take a seat and I'll try and explain everything as best as I can." Chuck took one of the chairs at the conference table, while his father took the chair beside him."

'' First things first Charles. I have an idea about the new Intersect that I designed."

"What is it Dad?" Chuck asked curiously.

''Based on the work I've done over the years, I designed this one so that it could be removed easily without any lingering side effects. So whenever you want, you can get rid of the Intersect safely. But to do that, first we have to create a new Intersect cube and the necessary encoded files.

'"Dad that would be awesome! Can I help in anyway?"

"Of course Charles. Okay, we'll began the file encoding in a few days because first, I have to create a new Intersect cube. For that, I'll need three days, four tops."

''Okay Dad, any help at all that I can provide, I will.''

Chuck paused for a minute before continuing.

"Look Dad, while that's great news, I'm pretty sure that's not all you wanted to talk to me about. After all this time, why have you revealed what's in effect a secret spy base underneath our family home after all this time?"

Stephen Bartowski sighed. "You're right Charles, there is something else I need to tell you."

Chuck began to feel nervous. His father's expression had changed and taken on a stricken look.

"It's about your mother Chuck." He paused to gather himself before continuing. "I'm afraid she's dead," he whispered.

"Dead?" responded Chuck in a very small voice. Despite how angry he had been that his mother disappeared from his and Ellie's lives, the first thing he felt was a sense of overwhelming grief. He felt his eyes begin to brim with tears. He didn't try to hold them back.

"How?" he managed to squeeze out.

"Charles, she was murdered."

"What are you talking about Dad?! When was my mother killed? Who did it and why am I only learning this now? How could you keep this from Ellie and me? She was our mother!"

Stephen replied calmly but sadly, "She was also my wife Charles."

Chuck was silent at that. He hadn't stopped to think how hard this must have been for his father; to have kept this from his family all these years.

"You have to know that I didn't want to hurt you or Ellie. But things have changed and I can't keep this to myself any longer. I really need your help."

"What's changed Dad? What do you want from me?" Chuck asked curiously, the anger he felt in abeyance for the moment.

"Charles, this isn't easy for me. I have some things to tell you, but you're not going to like them."

"I'll be the judge of that. Just stop stalling already, will you?!" replied Chuck, the anger from earlier returning.

Stephen sighed again.

"Look, Charles you already know that I was working with the CIA. Your mother was an agent, but she was working for ASIS.

At the mention of ASIS, Chuck flashed.

Stephen noted the flash. "That's right Charles. The Australian Secret Intelligence Service."

"So in addition to my mother being an agent, she was an agent for an overseas agency?"' responded Chuck.

"Yes Charles, this is what I am saying. But there is a lot more to the story."'

"Oh really?! And how are you going to top that last revelation?" replied Chuck sarcastically.

"Your real name isn't Charles Bartowski," he began slowly. "Son, please calm down," he continued when he saw that Chuck was getting angrier and angrier.

"Calm down?! You are saying I should calm down after you tell me my mother didn't just disappear from our lives, but that she was murdered? And that she was a foreign agent? And the name that I've gone by all my life is not my real name? Have I left anything out? And you want me to calm down?!" Chuck shouted.

'"Son, I am going to explain everything to you. I had to do what was necessary and I am not sorry for what I did," replied his father with steel in his voice.

Chuck took a deep breath at his father's tone. His father had always been slow to anger, but Ellie and Chuck never dared argue with their father when he used that tone on them.

"Fine. I'm calm. Perfectly calm here. Couldn't be calmer. So what is my real name anyway?"

Stephen smiled. "Your real name is James Bryan Irving. Ellie's real name is Faye Elizabeth Irving."
