Alyssa in Horrorland

By Natasha Rose

Fantasy / Horror

Prologue

It was a very late night, and Alyssa knew she was doomed to not get any sleep. Thunder growled outside and lightning flashed in the distance. A storm was coming.

"Mummy... can I please sleep in your room tonight?" She would beg for the third time.

Her mother sighed, pausing in her steps at Alyssa's door. "I've already told you, dear, that you're a big girl now. You can't sleep in mommy and daddy's bed anymore."

"Please?"

Alyssa's mother frowned, willing to put up with her daughter's antics no more. "How about I read to you instead?"

Alyssa loved it when her mother read to her! She hopped into her bed excitedly and stared at her mother in anticipation with wide eyes. Her mother took a book from the shelf, smiling softly to herself when her fingers brushed against a certain book.

“I think you’re old enough for this one now.” Alyssa’s mother sat down and began reading.

It wasn’t long before there was a loud thud. Alyssa had long since passed out, and her mother decided it was best to go and find out what it was. She discovered someone had knocked over a bunch of cake trays, and a bottle had tipped over by thankfully not broken.

She was hardly given the chance to gasp when she saw who was responsible. Alyssa's mother was pulled out into the dark night.

Elizabeth Robbins: 4.5 starsAs far as apocalypse stories go, this one took a new direction. I'm glad someone finally addressed the need for a vampire apocalypse! This is sort of a multi-genre festival of delights. With hints of forced societies, vamps, hunters, romance, apocalypse, government conspiracy, and thrill...

Felisa Yoder Osburn: I really enjoyed the story. Civil War stories are some of my favorites and the intertwining of the past with current times was wonderful. I look forward to reading the next stories.

Alice Liu: Whoa! I've been wondering how would the Maurauders react to Harry's life and here we go! YOU ARE THE BEST! All the characters are consistent with their personalities shown in the book! ElNachoWOTC: The grammar is tight and easy too read while packing a great vocabulary and you use a lot of vivid imagery with your words. One of the biggest things I noticed right away is the gritty realism you managed to cram into this book while going into a lot of exotic fantasy material. Including issue...

Deleted User: This is a very clever story in the style of 19th century (and turn of the century) Gothic writing, very reminiscent of Stevenson's The Body Snatchers or even of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (less so of Frankenstein itself, since the author is more minimalist than Shelley's florid, Romantic rhetoric). ...
