Chapter 10

The next day, I am sitting in the living room with Mom talking to Hana. Max is at a meeting with the other council leaders so he isn't home at the time. Hana and Mom are talking about my date with Eric which I wasn't happy about. I'm trying to forget about my date with Eric but they keep on bringing it up.

The front door opens and footsteps could be heard coming towards the room. "Is that you, Max?" Hana asks.

"Maybe."

"Uriah, what are you doing?"

Uriah steps into the living room, a smile on his face. "Hi mom."

"Is there something wrong?"

"No, I was just wondering if the princess would like to accompany us."

I look up at Uriah, an eyebrow raised. This was a first time a son of a council member has asked me to hang out with them. "May I ask why?" I want to know why Uriah wants me to hang out with him.

"Well, originally, Marlene, Lynn, and I were going to the training building to go the Pit but Lynn said she didn't want to be the third wheel again. Marlene then suggested asking you if you wanted to hang out so that Lynn didn't have to feel like she was a third wheel. So, here I am asking you if you want to hang out."

I look at my mom, with a begging look in my eyes. I would rather go and hang out with Uriah and his friends then listen to Mom and Hana talk about last night. Mom stares at me for a while before nodding. "All right, but be back around five. We have your dinner date with your other candidate tonight."

"Ok, thanks mom." I give her a kiss on the cheek then get up from my place on the couch. Uriah looks me over then furrows his eyebrows together. "Maybe you should put something else on; your outfit might get ruined."

I look down at what I'm wearing. I have on a light purple blouse with a matching light purple skirt and flats. "I really don't have anything else with me."

"Maybe Marlene or Lynn can lend her some clothes for the day," suggests Hana. "I know my clothes won't fight her."

"Ok, let's go." Uriah heads out the door and I follow him. I notice that Marlene and Lynn are waiting outside the house and Marlene smiles when she sees me while Lynn just stares. Lynn looks at my outfit before shaking her head. "Your clothes are going to get torn up if you hang out with us."

"Good thing I came prepared," Marlene says, tossing a bag to me. I catch it then raise an eyebrow at her. "Since Uriah was going to ask you if you wanted to come, I figured I would bring an extra set of clothes, just in case." I nod my head in thanks and we start walking towards the training building. Uriah takes out his card and swipes it over the key panel once we get there. We walk in and Marlene points out a bathroom for me to change in. I walk into the stall then take out the clothes that Marlene brought. There is a black tank top, black jeans, and combat boots. I change into the outfit and I feel a little uncomfortable with nothing to cover my shoulders but I'm going to have to get over it. I finish lacing up the boots then put my clothes back in the bag before walking out of the stall. Uriah, Marlene, and Lynn take in my appearance before they say some sort of approval to it.

"Black looks good on you, Tris," says Lynn.

"Tris?" Uriah asks.

"Beatrice sounds too nice but Tris sounds tough; hence the nickname."

"My best friend calls me Tris," I say. "She also said that Beatrice sounded too innocent and that Tris sounded more rebellious."

"That'll be your new name when you are in Dauntless," states Marlene. Suddenly, she walks up to me and takes my hair out of the bun. My hair cascades down my back in small waves as Marlene fixes my hair before she is satisfied by how it looks. "Perfect, now you look Dauntless." I smile at her. We walk towards the Pit and make our way up to the top of the path and enter the tunnel. We walk further into it which leads to a set of stairs climbing all the way to the top. We start climbing the stairs and when we get closer to the top, I can hear people letting out shouts of laughter and screams of joy. "Where are we going?" I ask.

"You'll see in a minute," Uriah answers, giving me a smirk. I then see a light at the end of the tunnel and when we exit, I realize that we are on top of the building. I see Zeke standing by the edge, hooking up a man into a harness and then pushing him off; the man's screams of joy could be heard as he flies down the side of the building.

"There's my kid brother," Zeke exclaims, walking over to us. He then grabs ahold of Uriah and puts him into a headlock, rubbing his knuckles into Uriah's head. Uriah pushes Zeke away then fixes his hair. "I hate it when you do that," Uriah mutters. Zeke laughs then his eyes land on me. He stares at me for a while before his eyes go wide. "Princess Beatrice, what are you doing here?"

"Uriah invited me to come over," I answer.

"Who's that, Zeke?" A young woman asks, walking over to us. I look over Zeke's shoulder and see a woman with shoulder length brown hair and brown eyes standing there. She is wearing a black tank top with pants and boots. "Shauna, this is Princess Beatrice," introduces Zeke. "Princess, this is my fiancé, Shauna."

"Your highness, how did you get here?"

"My idiot brother invited her."

Shauna turns to Uriah and glares at him. "What? Can I not ask the princess if she wants to go out and have fun?"

"Uriah, what happens if the princess gets hurt?"

"I can take care of myself pretty well, thank you," I snap at her. One thing I hate is that I don't like it when people think I can't take care of myself. They believe that just because I'm from Abnegation means that I don't know how to defend myself. "So, what's going on here?" I gesture to the line going down the building.

"That's the zip line," answers Lynn. "It's a lot of fun and it's also a mini-initiation ritual for new members of the training building."

"I want to try."

Everyone stares at me. "Are you sure you want to, princess?" asks Zeke.

I walk towards the edge of the building and grab ahold of the harness. "I want to do this."

Zeke shrugs. "Ok. How do you want to go down?"

"Which way do most people go down?"

"On their stomach, face first," answers Uriah.

I nod. Zeke straps me in with my face gazing towards the ground. My heart is racing with fear and surprisingly excitement. "Don't forget to pull the brake at the bottom," Zeke reminds me, gesturing to a lever from the top of the harness.

"Ok."

Zeke pulls me back before pushing me off the building. I let out a scream as I fly down the building. The wind whips through my hair and after a few minutes, I feel like I'm flying. I stretch my arms out, a smile on my face, as I continue to fly down the line. I pass many different buildings and I am able to get a good view of the palace. Despite all of the other buildings I have seen, the palace has a magnificent black color and it has a majestic feel to it. There are no people at the palace which made it look empty and depressing. Just as soon as I get a good look at the palace, I pass it and continue down the line. I find myself getting closer and closer to the ground that I can see a group of people standing by a wall of a building.

"Pull the brake!" They yell at me. I reach behind me and try to reach the brake dangling in the air. I could hear the yelling getting closer so I knew I'm getting closer to the ground. I'm able to grab hold of the brake and give it a hard yank. The brake presses against the line and a loud screeching sound came from it. I could feel myself starting to slow down until I stop a few inches away from the wall of the building. I look below me and the people start to cheer, raising their fists into the air. I raise my fist and I start yelling back, a smile on my face. In that moment, I feel free and I feel like I can do anything.

I am walking back to Hana's house with Uriah, Marlene, and Lynn beside me. We are talking about the zip line event and I really want to go again but I have to go back to get ready for my date with Four. Uriah came down the zip line after me then Marlene then Lynn. All of them told me that I was very Dauntless in that moment and that I also acted Dauntless. Before we left, I had to change back to the clothes I left the house in and I had to fix my hair so my mom wouldn't scold me.

"Did you have a good time, Tris?" Marlene asks, knocking me out of my thoughts.

I look at her, a smile on my face. "Yes I did. I would love to go back there and go zip lining again."

"Maybe the next time you visit, we can take you around and show you other activities that Dauntless do for fun," suggests Uriah.

"That would be great."

We arrive back at the house and I say goodbye to my friends before entering the house to see my mother and Hana talking on the couch. Did they even move the whole entire time I was gone? Well, at least they weren't talking about Eric anymore for Max is back and he is sitting beside Hana, talking with my mother. From what I'm hearing, it sounds like they are talking about my mom's time in Dauntless.

"Do you miss it?" Hana asks.

Mom thinks about the question before answering, "At times, I do. I miss the many wild pranks I pulled with my friends and zip lining down the training building, but I am happy with Andrew. If I never met him, I know I wouldn't be as happy as I am today. Sometimes, I still feel guilty about what happened to Amar and his family and that the kingdom wouldn't be in this state." Mom pauses before she glances at the doorway and sees me standing there. "Hello Beatrice, when did you get back?"

"Just now," I answer, walking into the room.

"Did you have a fun time?" Hana asks.

I smile. "Yes, I really enjoyed the zip line and-"

"You went on the zip line?"

I slap my hand over my mouth. I didn't want to say anything about it because I didn't want my mom to flip out and tell me how dangerous it was or that I could have died. Instead, when I glance at her, my mom smiles at me. "I'm glad you had a good time, sweetie."

"You're not mad at me?"

"Beatrice, I know you were listening a few moments ago so I know you heard me say that I went on the zip line in my younger days." I blush; one rule that I was told was never to listen in on a conversation for it was considered rude. Mom gets up and starts walking towards me. "Plus, I know that you have my excitement for adventure and that you love to try something new and exciting. So I'm all right with you trying the zip line; I was actually hoping you would anyway." I smile at Mom; this was why I have such a great connection with her. She understands me so well and she knows what I want. "Now go get changed and get yourself ready. We'll be leaving in twenty minutes."

"Yes, mom." Before I leave, I give Mom a hug then walk towards the bedroom to change. I take out my off the shoulder, violet dress and change into it. The dress hugs my figure and gives my body curves that I don't normally have. I take my hair out of the bun and brush it out, for it was wild from going down the zip line. I smooth it down then put it back up in a bun. I grab my shawl that's lying on the chair and put it on so that it covers my shoulders then place on the white flats. I walk out of the room and into the living room, taking a seat next to my mom. I listen as Mom and Hana converse with one another until it is time to leave.

Mom knocks on the door then waits for someone to answer it. We only wait a few moments before the door opens and a woman with straight, black hair and black eyes stands at the entrance. She is wearing a black tank top with a knee-length skirt and black one inch heels. The woman smiles at us before giving us a slight bow. "Hello, your majesties; please come in." The woman steps aside and we walk into house. "My name is Tori. My husband is in the kitchen finishing dinner for me." She leads us into the kitchen and I notice a tattoo of a hawk on the back of her neck. I want to ask why she got a tattoo of the hawk but decide to hold my tongue. We walk into the kitchen and see a man with thinning black hair and brown eyes placing the food on the table. He is wearing a black dress shirt with black pants and boots. The man smiles when he notices us. "Hello. I'm Bud, your majesties." He bows before us. "Four should be down in a little bit."

"I'm here," Four says, walking into the kitchen. He is wearing a nice black T-shirt with black jeans and black sneakers. I then notice that Four looks nothing like Tori or Bud which makes me wonder if he was adopted. That explains why he looked hurt when I asked him about his parents, I thought to myself. We then sit down in our seats and start placing food on our plates. I see on the table that there is fries, buns, and meat patties. I place a hand full of fries on my plate then grab the patty and place it on a bun.

"Have you never seen a hamburger before?" Tori asks.

"No I've seen one, I've just never eaten one," I answer.

"Here, put this on it," Four says, handing me a bowl of red sauce. I pour the sauce onto the patty then take a bite out of it. I was amazed by how great the hamburger tasted and I took another big bite of it.

"I'm guessing you like it?" asks Bud.

I just nod, continuing to eat the hamburger.

"So Four, what do you like to do for fun?" Mom asks.

He shrugs. "Not much, I mostly like to keep to myself."

"Do you even go outside?" I ask.

"Yeah. I hang out with Zeke in the Pit a few times."

"You know Zeke?"

He nods. "He's a very close friend of mine and understands when I don't want to talk about something."

"I know his little brother, Uriah."

"Yes, we are staying at Hana's while we are here," says Mom.

"Do you have any hobbies or anything like that?" I ask.

"I do like to draw some ideas for tattoos."

"Yes, it really helps me out in the tattoo parlor," states Tori. "A lot of people really like his drawings and want to get that tattoo image."

"Is that ok if I can take a look at them?" I ask.

"Sure."

"You can do that after we finish dinner," says Mom.

I nod then continue to eat. We converse as we eat and soon, we have finished dinner and thankfully, we have no outbursts or problems with each other. Four then takes me upstairs to his room while my mom and his parents stay downstairs. We walk into his room and I take a look around. The walls are a simple dark gray color and his sheets are a nice dark blue, almost black, color. There isn't much decoration around the room which I like for I feel like when you have too much of something, then that means you have an obsession over it. Four walks over to one of his drawers and takes out a notebook. He hands me the notebook and I start looking through it. I see many different designs of flames or symbols of flames. The one that caught my attention is a circle with the flame inside of it. "I like this one," I say, showing him the design I'm talking about.

"I think that this symbol represents our kingdom," states Four.

"I think it fits well with the kingdom. Fire is very free and it can move on its own. The same goes with the people of Dauntless. They are free and I admire them for that."

"Do you want to be free?"

"Yes. I went zip lining with Uriah earlier and I felt so free when I was going down. I felt like I was a bird soaring through the wind, with no limitations whatsoever. I would love to have that feeling again."

Four takes a step closer to me, a smile on his face. "If you want, I can show you some places in Dauntless where I feel free."

I smile at him. "I would like that."

"Beatrice, it's time to go!" I hear my mother call from downstairs.

"I have to go." I start to walk away but Four grabs my wrist. "Can I see you tomorrow?"

I stare at him, eyes wide. "Um…sure. When?"

"Around noon. I'll come pick you up and I can take you around Dauntless."

"All right, I'll see you tomorrow." Before I'm able to leave, Four leans down and places a kiss on my cheek. "Have a good night, Princess Beatrice." I smile. "You too, Four." I then leave the room, with my face tingling from the kiss and my heart pounding with excitement. If tomorrow goes really well, then Four might be the man I want to marry.
