I wake up on a bed with the words 'Fear God Alone' printed above me. I try to figure out where I am when I hear water running from another room. I look to my side and see Four standing in front of a sink, running his hands under the water, which is turning a slight pinkish-red color. He turns the faucet off and then dries his hands, inspecting them over. He walks out of the bathroom and grabs an ice-pack from the fridge. Four turns around, his gaze catching mine, and walks over to me.
"Your hands," I croak out.
"My hands are none of your concern," Four says, placing the ice-pack underneath my head. I notice a cut on Four's lower lip and I reach my hand out, gently grazing my fingertips over the cut. "Beatrice, I'm all right."
"Tris," I say.
Four stares at me, an eyebrow raised. "What?"
"Tris; that's what my friends call me."
"I like that better than Beatrice; it suits you more." Four sits down on the edge of the bed. "How do you feel?"
"Sore. What happened with the men who tried to kidnap me?"
"I don't know. When I went back to bring them to jail, they weren't there anymore. I'm thinking that they must have gained consciousness when I was bringing you to my place and they ran off. Did you recognize either of them?"
"One of them sounded like Peter from Candor but I don't know how he would be in Dauntless, for he is in jail." I look down at myself and see that I'm not in the same outfit I was in last night. I am now wearing a black sweater and sweatpants. Four must have noticed my confused look for he says, "If you're wondering if I changed your clothes, I didn't; Tori did. She wanted you to sleep in something comfortable so she grabbed some clothes that didn't fit her anymore and changed you into those clothes."
I nod, understanding his story. "Wait, what happened with my mom and Hana? Are they all right?"
"Bud went over to check on them and when he went in, Hana was sitting on a chair with an ice-pack on her head and your mother was standing over an unconscious man. Max and some Dauntless police were in the house as well, arresting the man and asking your mom and Hana questions. Your mother asked if you were all right and Bud told her what happened to you. She came over to check on you to make sure you were ok then she spent the night here."
"Can I see her?"
"Sure, I'll go get her." Four gets up off the bed and walks out of the room. A few minutes pass before Mom comes in, relief on her face when she sees that I'm up. She rushes over to me, wrapping her arms around my gently. "Oh, my girl," Mom says, kissing my head. "How are you feeling? Does anything hurt?"
"I feel sore everywhere but nothing major hurts. How are you feeling, Mom?" I ask.
"I'm fine, sweetheart. The guy that I fought wasn't that experienced in fighting."
"Who was the guy?"
"I have no idea, I didn't recognize him. The Dauntless police are going to take him into Candor to see if they can figure out who his accomplices were."
"I see." I look down, playing with the sheets on the bed.
"Is something wrong, Beatrice?"
"Do I have to go home now?"
"What do you mean?"
"Well, Dad expects us home now but I haven't had my date with Four yet and-"
"Beatrice, it's alright," says Mom. "Your father understands your situation and is allowing you to stay an extra day so you can still have your date with Four."
I smile then jump at Mom, wrapping my arms around her. "Thank you, Mom, thank you."
Mom wraps her arms around me, rubbing my back affectionately. "You're welcome, sweetie. Also, I have a little surprise for you."
I pull back, staring at Mom with an eyebrow raised. "What's that?"
Mom picks up a bag from the floor and hands it to me, a smile on her face. I give her questing look but Mom gestures for me to look in it. I open the bag and peer inside, a smile slowly spreading on my face. "Is this for me?" Mom nods. I pull out a knee-length black dress with a flowery pattern covering one shoulder then goes across the chest and covers part of the other shoulder. It's a nice, simple black dress and there is a pair of black wedges to go with it.
"I figured that you didn't want to wear the same outfit you wore yesterday so I was able to find this black dress for you," explains Mom. "I rented this dress just for today so after your date with Four, we have to return it to the store I rented it from. Just make sure you don't ruin it or anything, all right?"
"Ok, and thanks mom."
She smiles. "Get changed and I'll tell Four that you will go out with him today."
I nod and Mom leaves the room so I can get ready. I change out of the sweatshirt and pants then put on the dress. The straps cover my shoulders so I don't have to worry about wearing a shawl. I comb my fingers through my hair and, once I'm certain my hair is ok, put it into a braid. I slip on the wedges then walk out of the room to see Four standing by the door. His eyes widen when he sees what I'm wearing and blush crepes to my cheeks. "Do I look bad?"
"No, you look…beautiful," Four answers.
I'm pretty sure my face is as red as a tomato. "Thank you."
Four holds his arm out to me. "Shall we go?"
"What do you have in mind?" I ask, taking his arm in mine.
"Just some places that I've been that I want to show you." He leads me out of the house and walks me towards the training building. Four takes out his card and swipes it across the key panel. The door opens and Four holds open for me. "After you, my lady," he says, slightly bowing to me.
I smile. "Why thank you, kind sir." I walk into the building and Four comes in right after me. We walk towards the Pit and Four leads me down towards the bottom and we walk across the floor of the Pit and towards a restaurant called 'The Black Cake Palace.' I give Four a questioning look but he just smiles at me. We walk into the restaurant and a young woman stands behind a counter. "Hello, how many in your party?"
"Just two," answers Four.
The woman grabs two menus then smiles at us. "Please follow me." She leads us over to a table that is in the corner of the room and that has a window with a view of a waterfall flowing into the rushing river. "Here are your menus and someone will be here shortly to take your order," says the woman.
"Thank you," I politely say.
Four pulls out my chair and I sit down on it, with him pushing me in. He then sits down in his own chair and opens his menu to look at the options. I open my menu but I realize that all the food listed is different types of cakes and other delicious desserts. We don't have these kind of restaurants back in Abnegation so this is all new to me.
"This restaurant basically serves desserts for breakfast, lunch, and dinner," starts Four. "Most people come here to get their chocolate cake but I like just about anything on this menu."
"That's interesting," I say.
A woman with long brown hair and brown eyes walks over, more like struts, to our table. She is wearing a black shirt with the restaurant logo on it and pants. I notice that her shirt is pulled down low so it is exposing her chest a little. "Hello, my name is Vanessa. May I take your order?" Vanessa keeps on staring at Four, practically ignoring my presence.
"What do you want to drink?" Four asks me, ignoring Vanessa's attempts to flirt with him.
"I'll just have a water," I answer.
"Two waters," Four tells Vanessa.
"Coming right up," Vanessa answers, writing it down then winking at Four. She struts away from us, swaying her hips a bit.
"What do you plan on getting?" Four asks.
"I don't know yet. There are so many different choices."
"Could I recommend you trying the Dauntless cake? It's the most popular dessert here and it's really good."
"Ok, I'll take your word for it and try that one."
Four smiles then looks at the menu to make his own choice. Vanessa comes back with our waters and again, just stares at Four and completely ignores me. "Are you ready to order?"
Four gestures for me to start so I say, "I'll have the Dauntless Cake." I don't see Vanessa writing this down so I tap her on the arm. She turns and glares at me. "What?"
"You don't need to be all snappy with me but you are not exactly doing your job."
"And who are you to be telling me what to do?"
"Well, I'm Four's date and-"
"You?!" She then starts laughing which makes me confused. Why is this girl laughing? Is it something I said? "Why would Four be with you? I mean, you have no curves whatsoever and you're not exactly pretty. I think Four needs to go out with someone more prettier than you; someone like me for example."
Vanessa's words struck me hard and tears creep into my eyes. I look down and try to not let the tears run down my face. Suddenly, I hear the chair scrape against the floor and footsteps stomp over toward us. When I look up, Four is face to face with Vanessa and he looks pissed off while Vanessa is staring at him with…fear? "Don't you dare say that to her. She's much prettier than all the make-up and hair products you use every day. So if I were you, I would ask her for forgiveness for you just insulted the princess of Abnegation." Vanessa's eyes go wide and she turns to me, slightly bowing her head. "I'm…I'm sorry, your highness. Please forgive me."
I shake my head at her. "Just…leave me alone."
Vanessa nods then practically runs from our table. Four kneels in front of me and gently grabs my chin, forcing me to look at him. "Hey, don't listen to anything that she said."
"It's true though. I'm not very pretty and there are a ton of women out there who are prettier than me. You can practically have whoever you want and-" Four silences me by placing his finger on my lips. "Stop, stop doubting yourself. You are pretty and don't let anyone tell you otherwise." I smile. "Thanks, Four."
Someone clears their throat and we both turn around to see a middle-age man standing there. "I heard what Vanessa said to you and, as the manager of this restaurant, I came to apologize for her behavior. She will be dealt with for her attitude and behavior towards you so as an apology from us, please have a slice of Dauntless Cake. Don't worry about the bill, it's on the house." The manager gives me a container with the slice of cake in it and I'm amazed by how big the slice is. If the slice was on a dinner plate, it would almost be as big as that. "Thank you," I manage to let out. The manager nods. "Again, I'm sorry for the trouble Vanessa caused you. Please, enjoy the rest of your day." The manager walks away.
Four suddenly pulls me up from the chair and leads me out of the restaurant. "Where are we going?" I ask.
"There is one more place I want to show you," he answers. Four leads me up the path and into the third entrance. We walk through the tunnel which leads to a bridge with the waterfall. Four starts climbing down a stone pathway and I follow him, making sure I don't slip on the rocks. We get to the bottom and Four helps me to sit down on one of the rock formations. "What is this place?"
"It's called the Chasm," Four answers. "This is my secret hideout and I sometimes come here when I want to be alone."
"Why would you show me this place then?"
Four stares at me before answering, "Because you're special."
I blush. "You don't have to keep complementing me, Four."
"Do me a favor and don't call me that."
"Then what should I call you?"
I nod. "So, let's see how good this cake is." I open the container and start eating the cake. It tastes amazing and it's very moist and chocolaty. I share my cake with Four and together, we finish the cake. We stay for another twenty minutes, talking with each other, before Four says that he has to take me back. We walk up and out of the Chasm and start walking towards the exit. While we walk, Four's hand finds mine and I smile. I interlock my fingers with his and I continue to hold his hand all the way back to his house.
